INHERENT VICE  (R)  148min

Reclusive author Thomas Pynchon adapts his own novel for director PT Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master).  Like a cross between Altman's THE LONG GOODBYE and the Coen brother's THE BIG LEBOWSKI, this detective caper comedy is convoluted, indulgent, and funny.  A shaggy Joachin Phoenix stars as a stoner private investigator who is pulled into a world of trouble that includes two missing men, a heroin addict, a corrupt dentist, and a schooner called the Golden Fang, after an unexpected visit from his ex.  The supporting cast includes Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro, Jena Malone, and Maya Rudolph.  trailer

STILL ALICE  (PG-13)  109min

Julianne Moore was this year's Best Actress Oscar winner for her mesmerizing performance in this moving and powerful exploration of the devastating consequences of the living nightmare that is Alzheimer's.  She plays a renowned linguistics professor who begins to forget words; her diagnosis and struggle to stay connected as her mind dims causes the bonds in her family to be tested, including with her husband (Alec Baldwin) and youngest, rebellious daughter (Kristen Stewart).  This is the latest film from the filmmaking team of Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (Quinceañera).  trailer

LEVIATHAN  (R)  140min  [in Russian with subtitles]

One of this year's Oscar-nominated foreign films, this Russian drama from director Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return) tells a story of corruption and loss, and one ordinary man's fight against the system as a metaphor for the problems of an entire nation.  Kolya is an auto repairman who lives with his teenaged son and his second, younger wife in a seaside home on the Barents Sea that has been in his family for generations.  But the corrupt mayor covets this land and intends to take it for himself using eminent domain.  Kolya calls in an old army buddy, now a hotshot Moscow lawyer to help him fight, with unintended consequences.  trailer

Fri Apr 3 - Mon Apr 6

MCFARLAND, USA  (PG)  129min

This fully entertaining and heartwarming film about the unexpected success of an immigrant community's high school sports team rises well above expectation with straightforward direction by Niki Caro (Whale Rider); this film isn't sappy or filled with cliché and earns its payoff.  Kevin Costner is great as a disgraced coach who finds himself moving his family to California's central valley, to a poor town of Mexican immigrants where kids work the fields both before and after school.  Based on a true story, he tries to convince them to run cross country instead of failing at football, while the locals wonder about their new, non-Latino neighbors.  trailer

Tues Apr 7 - Thurs Apr 9

RED ARMY  (PG)  85min

This fascinating documentary, both humorous and enlightening, explores the geopolitical consequences of cold war politics and national pride on the Russian ice hockey dynasty.  Fully entertaining for both fans and non-fans of sports, filmmaker Gabe Polsky explores the history of this incredibly talented and successful team and its members, especially team captain Slava Fetisov, as these athletes' lives cross some of the most earth-shattering political events of the past century and they are transformed from national heroes to political enemies.  trailer

Coming on our Second Screen?

SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL  (PG)  122min

In the sequel to the popular 2011 comedy, co-managers Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith) and Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) dream of expansion while Sonny also plans for his wedding.  As the big day nears, family and guests alike find themselves swept up in the irresistible intoxication of an Indian wedding. In this spirited film with endearing characters again directed by John Madden, co-stars Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie return, joining new cast members Richard Gere and David Straitharn.  trailer

CINDERELLA  (PG)  113min

Director Kenneth Branagh and screenwriter Chris Weitz bring this charming and lovely live action version of the revered fairy tale to the screen.  The fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) deteriorate when her father unexpectedly passes away and she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new step-mother (Cate Blanchette) and sisters. Relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, she is determined to honor her mother's dying words to "have courage and be kind."  And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. As in all good fairy tales, a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham-Carter) steps forward to help and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella's life forever.  trailer

FOCUS  (R)  105min

Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned con artist who becomes romantically involved with beautiful novice Jess (Margot Robbie, Wolf of Wall Street). As he's teaching her the tricks of the trade, she becomes an unwanted distraction and gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame--now an accomplished femme fatale--shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky's latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop...and the consummate con man off his game.  Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love) have made an enjoyable, breezy escapist fun rom-com-con between two people who can never trust each other.  trailer

CHAPPIE  (R)  120min

In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. When programmer Deon (Dev Patel) steals a broken police robot and gives it new programming, Chappie (Sharlto Copley) becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself, but he is stolen by criminals and taught to be a gangster.  Deon's rival (Hugh Jackman) has also programmed a robot but has made it all brawn and no brain, who becomes Chappie's rival.  This action-packed, thoughtful and fun science-fiction film is the latest from South African director Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, District 9).  trailer
