Mon Dec 26 - Thurs Dec 29
ARTHUR CHRISTMAS (PG) 97min 5:30 and 7:45
Aardman Animation, the legendary British studio (Wallace and Gromit,
Flushed Away) puts its own unique spin on the family Christmas genre with
this fresh and funny new film. Arthur (James McAvoy) is the black sheep
son of the current Santa (Jim Broadbent) who runs an ultra-high tech
operation out of the North Pole with his other son (Hugh Laurie) to get
all the presents delivered in one night. When things don't go as they
should, it seems up to Arthur to put things right in this clever and
wonderful for the whole family film.

and

TOWER HEIST (PG-13) 105min 6:00 and 8:15
There won't be a Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) version of the Academy Awards,
but we can see his satisfyingly entertaining and funny send-up of the
Bernie Madoff scandal. Alan Alda plays an amazingly successful investment
banker who lives in the luxury penthouse of a ritzy apartment complex
managed by Josh (Ben Stiller). Josh invests the pension fund of all his
employees (including homeless accountant Matthew Broderick, bellhop
Michael Peña, maid Gabourey Sidibe, and concierge Casey Affleck) with his
profitable tenant. When the FBI (agent Tia Leoni) arrests him and it
becomes apparent that the money is *poof* gone just like that, these
losers enlist the help of a local street criminal (Eddie Murphy) to help
them steal it back.

Fri Dec 30 - Thurs Jan 5
THE MUPPETS (PG) 102min 5:30 and 7:45
Gary (Jason Segal), his girlfriend (Amy Adams), and his brother Walter
(Walter the Muppet) take a vacation to Hollywood where Walter can visit
the Muppet Museum (he's a fan). He discovers the Muppet Theater
disheveled, and learns of a nefarious plan by the Tex Richman (Chris
Cooper) to buy the building and raze it so he can drill for oil. This
cannot be! Walter spearheads a fundraising telethon, convincing Kermit
the Frog to reunite his now far-flung buddies, including Miss Piggy,
Fozzie Bear, Animal, Gonzo and others to raise the millions needed to save
the beloved space. True to its roots, this is silly, slapstick, musical,
innocent felted puppet fun.

Fri Dec 30 - Mon Jan 2
J EDGAR (R) 137min 5:45 and 8:30
Leonardo DiCaprio gives a formidable performance as the nation's top
police officer, a former librarian whose career at the top of the FBI
spanned three wars, eight presidential administrations, and over fifty
years, snooping into the private lives of his enemies to keep them in
fear. Director Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black
(Oscar-winner for Milk) ambitiously and with nuance explore the life of
this controversial figure whose private relationships with his domineering
mother (Judi Dench), his fiercely loyal personal secretary (Naomi Watts),
and his deputy and longtime companion Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer) would
have made him a target of his own investigations were he anyone else.
This is an absorbing portrait of a complex man.

Tues Jan 3 - Thurs Jan 5
THE MILL AND THE CROSS (NR) 92min 6:00 and 8:00
This brilliantly complex and fascinatingly multi-layered dreamscape takes
the viewer directly into the Dutch master Pieter Bruegel the Elder's
iconic painting The Way to Calvary. Bruegel set his image of the
crucifixion in 16th century Flanders during the brutal Spanish
Inquisition, with the Spanish soldiers standing in for the Romans, and
Jesus and Mary just two in a crowd of locals. Polish filmmaker Lech
Majewski worked with art historian Michael Francis Gibson in adapting his
book; it is a detailed view of this particular piece, a glimpse into the
everyday life of rural 1564 Flanders, and an examination of this artist's
process, as part of this spectacular film includes Bruegel (Rutger Hauer)
explaining his methods to his financial patron (Michael York). Charlotte
Rampling plays the artist's muse and is the model for Mary.

Fri Jan 6 - Thurs Jan 12
THE IDES OF MARCH (R) 98min 6:00 and 8:15
This drama of insider politics, with all the backstabbing, betrayals and
intrigue that go along with it, was adapted from the play by Beau
Willimon, who worked on Howard Dean's 2004 campaign. The fourth
directoral effort by George Clooney (Good Night and Good Luck, Confessions
of a Dangerous Mind) is sharp and gripping. Ryan Gosling, in his third
film this year (Drive, Crazy Stupid Love) stars as an ambitious but
idealistic press secretary for a Democratic presidential nominee (Clooney)
in a tight primary race. He gets himself involved in a political scandal
that threatens his candidate's shot at the nomination. Marisa Tomei,
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood co-star.

Fri Jan 6 - Mon Jan 9
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PT1 (PG-13) 117min 5:30 and 8:00
Director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, Dreamgirls) takes the
reins in this visually lush, deeply romantic, occasionally humorous and
finally horrific adaptation of the first half of the final book of
Stephenie Meyers' uber-popular romance series. Human Bella, vampire
Edward and their family must deal with the chain of consequences brought
by their magical wedding, private, tropical honeymoon, and resulting
tumultuous pregnancy, which also brings on unforeseen and shocking
developments for werewolf Jacob.

Tues Jan 10 - Thurs Jan 12
MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE (R) 82min [in French with subtitles] 5:30
and 7:30
In a small French town, Germain (Gerard Depardieu), a nearly illiterate
man considered to be the village idiot by his friends, takes a walk to the
park one day and happens to sit beside Margueritte (Giselle Casadesus) a
little old lady who is feeding his favorite pigeons and reading excerpts
from her novel aloud. Lured by her passion for life and the magic of
literature from which he has always felt excluded, Germain slowly realizes
that he is smarter that he has ever allowed himself to be. Both their
lives are transformed and take off on new journeys. This is a sweet,
small uplifting gem from French director Jean Becker about chance
encounters and how they can unexpectedly change us.

Fri Jan 13 - Mon Jan 16
HUGO (PG) 98min
Martin Scorsese brings his unique vision and winning talents to his first
family film, based on Brian Selznick's Caldecott-winning "The Invention of
Hugo Cabret," sharing with this story a love of and appreciation of the
magic of films at the dawn of moviemaking. Wiley orphan Hugo (Asa
Butterfield) lives in the rafters of a 1930s Paris Metro station, winding
the clocks daily while trying to discover the secrets of a broken machine
left to him by his father. But when he is caught stealing needed parts
from a local toy seller (Ben Kingsley), his quest might be over. Sasha
Baron Cohen, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Lee, and Emily Mortimer co-star.

Tues Jan 17 - Thurs Jan 19
SUMMER PASTURE (NR) 85min [in Tibetan with subtitles]
In the poorest and most remote area of China's Sichuan Province lives a
charming and resilient nomadic family of eastern Tibetan yak herders.
Documentary filmmakers Lynn True, Nelson Walker, and Tsering Perlo have
crafted an accessible and intimate portrait of hardworking Yama, her
illiterate but charming husband Locho, and, following Tibetan Buddhist
tradition, their yet unnamed baby daughter. They continue their
hardscrabble lifestyle while many of their peers have relocated to the
city. This exquisite film chronicles a summer spent in the Zachukha
grasslands while the pressures of modernization create challenges that
threaten to reshape their existence.

Coming on our second screen?

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (PG-13) 128min
Director Guy Richie and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reteam for
another similarly inventive and entertaining foray into Victorian
intrigue. Holmes is in a tizzy because his partner Watson is about to be
married (he cannot imagine why!) Then the Crown Prince of Austria is
found dead; suicide is suspected, but Holmes thinks otherwise, and deduces
that the mastermind is his arch-enemy, the nefarious Professor Moriarty
(Jared Harris). Watson is hijacked from his honeymoon and bedlam ensues.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL (PG-13) 132min
Oscar-winning Pixar director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille)
moves from animation to live-action with this fourth installment in the
high-flying, stunt-filled adventure. Tom Cruise is joined by Simon Pegg
(Shaun of the Dead), Paula Patton (Precious) and Jeremy Renner (Hurt
Locker) as agents for the IMF (Impossible Mission Force). This terrific,
exhilarating thriller unflaggingly sustains amazing visual and dramatic
energy as this team, disenfranchised by the government, works to stop the
Russian bad guy (Michael Nyqvist, original Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) from
blowing up a nuclear bomb on the US and bringing on the apocalypse,
because he can.

[Reel Pizza] update Nov 4 - Nov 7

hey everyone,

It has arrived...We are coming up on the last fall weekend for Reel Pizza
in 2011. Our closing night will be Monday Nov 7th. On Tuesday, we will
celebrate Pierce and Chloe's 14th birthday (!!!). Next we give the entire
place a thorough scrubbing and some needed repairs, and then we head off
for a few weeks to see family and recharge. Never fear, we will reopen
"for the season" December 26th, which falls on a Monday this year. Again,
(because we can't say it enough) THANK YOU ALL for supporting us and
allowing us to provide some fun and/or thoughtful entertainment for yet
another year.

Of course, our discount ticket card (THE BIG TICKET), single admission
cards and gift certificates in any amount are for sale as holiday gifts.
Send me an email, call the theatre at 288-3828 (leave a message if there's
no answer and we will get back to you) or mail us a check with your order
to PO Box 625, Bar Harbor ME 04609 and we will set you right up. Colin
will be taking care of business while we are away, so you shouldn't even
notice we are gone!

We have one last special program in this year...Sunday Nov 6th at 1:30 we
will be screening THE RAILROAD OF LOVE in honor of Veteran's Day, in the
spirit of reconciliation with our enemies, and with the cooperation of
several local peace and justice organizations. It is a free screening and
there will be time for discussion after.

Also, don't forget that tonight and tomorrow night we are screening
DANCING AT THE MILL, the Jeff Dobbs Documentary about the history of MDI.
Attending the screenings are participants in the film who will introduce
and take questions about the production, and a portion of the proceeds
will be donated to the MDI HISTORICAL SOCIETY.

Happy Thanksgiving to all; we will be back with you with a new schedule as
an early Christmas gift in mid December!

-Lisa and Chris

and
50/50 (R) 99min 6:00 and 8:15

Sun 11/6 Special Matinee
THE RAILROAD OF LOVE (NR) [in JAPANESE w/ subtitles] 1:30pm

**************

Fri Nov 4 - Mon Nov 7
PUSS IN BOOTS (PG) 90min 5:30 and 7:30
held over a second weekend BRAND NEW! Way before Puss (Antonio Banderas)
ever met Shrek, our suave and furry feline friend goes on a swashbuckling
ride, as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and
the tough and street-savvy Kitty (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose
that lays the Golden Eggs from evil and ugly Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and
Jill (Amy Sedaris) trying to save his town. It's a hilarious and
courageous adventure of an unlikely hero, and the true story of a
notorious fighter, lover and outlaw, in boots.

Fri Nov 4 - Mon Nov 7
50/50 (R) 99min 6:00 and 8:15
Inspired by the personal experiences of screenwriter Will Reiser (Da Ali G
Show) , this is an original story about friendship, love, survival and
finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph Gordon-Leavitt (Inception, (500)
Days of Summer) is Adam, a clean-living, twenty something public radio
producer who is diagnosed with a rare bone cancer one day after
complaining to his doc about a sore back. Seth Rogan plays his best
friend who stays true through all the indignities, including radiation,
chemo, hairloss, surgery and more. In real life Rogan is Reiser's best
friend and took the same role. Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) is the
therapist trainee who isn't quite sure how to help her new client.
Angelica Huston is his hovering mom. This film is unorthodox, observant,
honestly poignant, uplifting and very funny, all at the same time.

Sun 11/6
THE RAILROAD OF LOVE (NR) [in JAPANESE w/ subtitles] 1:30pm
Highlighting veteran's struggles after war, this wonderful documentary
tells the story of an Australian Catholic priest who led reconciliation
efforts between Australians and Japanese after WWII. Father Tony Glynn
showed unflagging generosity toward those stricken by poverty after the
war and, in the spirit of reconciliation and friendship, supported
Australia-Japan civilian associations towards that end. In depicting
Father Glynn's attempt to reconcile and re-create friendship between
former foes, including various historical footage from the period, this
documentary is a moving account of the history of Father Tony Glynn's work
with the friendship associations from both countries. Masanabu Ikemiya
will introduce the film. There will be representatives from Veterans for
Peace, Pax Christi, and the Peace and Justice Center in Bangor to lead
discussion afterward.

[Reel Pizza] update Oct 28 - Nov 3

Hi everyone

This morning I participated in "The Business of Reading" at the Conners
Elementary School in Bar Harbor. Every morning for a week, a business
person visits each classroom and talks about how reading is important to
their work and then reads a story, or a portion thereof, aloud to the
class. Today I read to some great first graders and we talked about the
reading I do to choose movies and about where the ideas for movies come
from.

In this spirit, I want to mention that there are several films opening
this fall that are literary adaptations, so while we are closed, you might
want to visit your local library or bookstore and pick up some reading,
/before/ you see the movie! (I should thank my mother for forwarding me an
email she received from her local bookstore in Clinton, NJ for this list
of titles.)

Including:
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY by John Le Carre
CORIOLANUS by William Shakespeare
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN by Lionel Shriver
THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET by Brian Selznick
THE DESCENDENTS by Kaui Hart Hemmings
THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES by Arthur Conan Doyle (a second film
based on the stories)
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Steig Larsson (the English language
version)
WE BOUGHT A ZOO by Benjamin Mee

This week we have two literary adaptations (although one should be
considered a rather "loose" adaptation!), as well as a special mid-week
film that benefits the MDI Historical Society. See you soon!

-Lisa

upcoming Veteran's Day holiday, presented by Masanobu Ikemiya and several
local Peace organizations. Please join us if you can.

26th at 4:30, like usual "for the season". We thank you one and all for
your support, patronage, suggestions, and kind words over this year, and
we look forward to returning refreshed and ready to spend another winter
here at home with our friends and neighbors, presenting a wide variety of
films both obscure and highly popular, special programming, fundraisers,
Senior matinees and other fun things. We couldn't do this without you!

Art in the Lobby ELIZABETH SOMERS Bar Harbor
Delight in the beauty found in everyday objects drives the selection of
subjects for my paintings. Celebrating the prismatic complexity of color
found in the illuminated surface of a handful of fruit, finding whimsy and
personality in a piece of antique furniture, these are discoveries that
fill me with surprise and inspiration. Oil pastels, by virtue of their
creamy consistency and rich depth of color lend themselves to layering of
colors beautifully, re-working with a brush and solvent or scratching away
color to achieve a sgraffito effect. This combination of techniques allows
me to create images that can glow, vibrate and, hopefully bring the viewer
a feast for the eyes.

Sunday Oct 23 1:00pm
FUNDRAISER MATINEE: OUT IN THE SILENCE (NR)
When you marry, you put an announcement in your hometown paper but if you
are gay, it's not quite so simple. Film makers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer
returned to Joe's small hometown to investigate the hate their wedding
announcement generated. One individual who welcomed them was the mother of
a gay teenager who had to leave the local public school to escape bullying
after he came out. There is conflict and confrontation, but also, in its
way, resolution in this thoughtful film. This showing is a fundraiser to
support high school Gay Straight Alliances in Northern Maine sponsored by
the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network and includes student voice
presentations, an art show by MDI High students, and a live short play by
Sumner students. Come out and support GLSEN in creating a safer community
for all! There will also be a raffle of copies of the movie. $10 for
adults and $2 for students.

Sunday Nov 6 1:30pm free

Fri Oct 21 - Thurs Oct 27
MONEYBALL (PG-13) 133min 5:45 and 8:30
This new film, directed by Bennett Miller (Capote) is based on a
best-selling true story by Michael Lewis. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane,
the general manager of the Oakland A's baseball team in the late 1990's
and the guy who assembles the team. He is forced to reinvent his team on
a tight budget and forms an unlikely partnership with Ivy League grad
Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), creating a specialized analytical computer
program to choose bargain players that the scouts call flawed, but all of
whom have an ability to get on base, score runs, and hopefully will win
games. It is a revolution that challenges old school traditions and puts
Beane in the crosshairs of those who say he is tearing out the heart and
soul of the game. Also starring are Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin
Wright.

Fri Oct 21 - Mon Oct 24
DOLPHIN TALE (PG) 113min 5:15 and 7:45
This touching family film is based on an amazing true story. Winter the
dolphin stars as herself in this adaptation of her remarkable and unlikely
life. She is discovered wounded and stranded on a Florida beach one
morning by a lonely, troubled pre-teen. Rescued, she is taken to the
marine aquarium's hospital, but despite their best efforts, her tail
flukes must be amputated. The boy devotes himself to her recovery, which
helps him deal with the injuries suffered by his beloved cousin in the
war. With the help of a prosthetic tail, it is hoped she will learn to
swim again. Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, Harry Connick, jr., and
Morgan Freeman lend their acting talents to this inspirational film.

Tues Oct 25 - Thurs Oct 27
MOZART'S SISTER (NR-PG) 120min [in French with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00
Written, directed and produced by René Féret, this lush historical drama
imagines the teenaged years of Nannerl Mozart, the older sister by five
years of young prodigy Wolfgang, and a gifted musician in her own right.
On the road in 1763, their parents are taking the children touring the
European royal courts, showcasing their talents. With Nannerl approaching
the marriageable age, her father is increasingly discouraging her in her
musical ambitions, succumbing to the gender mores of the times. A
friendship with the children of French monarch Louis XV gives an
opportunity to challenge the social order.

Fri Oct 28 - Mon Nov 7
PUSS IN BOOTS (PG) 90min 5:30 and 7:30
BRAND NEW! Way before Puss (Antonio Banderas) ever met Shrek, our suave
and furry feline friend goes on a swashbuckling ride, as he teams with
mastermind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the tough and
street-savvy Kitty (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose that lays the
Golden Eggs from evil and ugly Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy
Sedaris) trying to save his town. It's a hilarious and courageous
adventure of an unlikely hero, and the true story of a notorious fighter,
lover and outlaw, in boots.

Fri Oct 28 - Mon Oct 31
HIGHER GROUND (R) 109min 6:00 and 8:15
Starring actress Vera Farmiga (Up In the Air) makes an assured directing
debut with this thoughtful, non-judgmental and believable story of a woman
questioning her faith. Inspired by Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark
World, the story spans twenty years in the life of Corinne, from the
development of her belief in the church as a young girl, through its
reinforcement as a young mother and wife living in a conservative
Christian commune, to her struggles with the doubt she faces in middle age
as she aches for a tangible connection to her God, all the while fearing
that in losing her faith she could lose her entire community of friends
and family.

Tues Nov 1 - Thurs Nov 3
DANCING AT THE MILL (NR) 63min 6:00 and 7:45
Made in collaboration with the Mount Desert Island Historical Society to
celebrate this year's 250th anniversary of European settlement on MDI,
this locally made film depicts life on Mount Desert Island from the
mid-1700s through the late 1940s. It begins with Abraham Somes' founding
of the earliest colonial settlement on the island and blossoms into a
presentation of island history, culture, and community. A unique feature
of the film is footage shot by island native Charles Savage from 1927 to
1930. In addition, many early scenes were recreated through digital
technology. You might even recognize some friends and neighbors! The film
was written by Gunnar Hansen, who wrote Mount Desert: An Informal History
and produced by Jeff Dobbs and Bing Miller of Dobbs Productions. A
portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the Mount Desert Island
Historical Society to support its further work.

Fri Nov 4 - Mon Nov 7
PUSS IN BOOTS (PG) 90min 5:30 and 7:30
held over a second weekend

not yet confirmed but expected for
Fri Nov 4 - Mon Nov 7

[Reel Pizza] update Oct 14 - 20

hi everyone

Here is the schedule for the next week at Reel Pizza. It contains the
last episode in 2011 of ImproVision, our wacky collaboration with the
talents of ImprovAcadia on Friday night. They are a very funny crew!
Check it out while you still can.

With last week's frost, we have reached the end of the fresh basil season
(many thanks again to Paul of Happytown Farm) but, sad as this is, it
means the beginning of soup season. Hurrah! Look for some warming
options in the days and weeks ahead.

See you soon!
-Lisa

Fri 10/14 IMPROVISION 11pm
Fri 10/14 - Thurs 10/20 DRIVE (R) 100min 5:30 and 7:45
Fri 10/14 - Mon 10/17 THE FUTURE (R) 92min 6:00 and 8:00
Tues 10/18 - Thurs 10/20 THE NAMES OF LOVE (R) 102min 6:00 and 8:15

****************

Fri Oct 14 - Thurs Oct 20
DRIVE (R) 100min 5:30 and 7:45
Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love) shifts gears again to play Driver, the
main character in this contemporary film noir set on the back streets of
Los Angeles. His days are spent as a stunt man for Hollywood pictures,
while in his evenings he moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals.
His cool is shaken a bit when he meets his pretty new neighbor (Carey
Mulligan) who has a young son and a husband in jail. Albert Brooks and
Ron Perlman are two shades of bad guy that cross Driver's path. This
stylishly suspenseful and entertaining film, based on the pulp novel by
James Sallis, won Nicholas Winding Refn the directing prize at this year's
Cannes Festival.

Fri Oct 14 - Mon Oct 17
THE FUTURE (R) 92min 6:00 and 8:00
Magical, charming and a little strange describes the second film from
performance artist Miranda July (Me, You and Everyone We Know). Blending
whimsy with deep emotion about growing up, she and Hamish Linklater star
as a middle-aged LA couple, Sophie and Jason, somewhat bored with life and
feeling they should add some responsibility. They decide to adopt a stray
cat they find; this cat, Paw-Paw, is ailing and may only have a few months
to live, one of its selling points. When they discover it could live
longer (even though they won't take possession for 30 days) their lives
are thrown into disarray, and they quit their day jobs; she takes on art
projects, he, volunteer activism and their lives change. This is a movie
that will stay with you long after you leave the cinema.

Tues Oct 18 - Thurs Oct 20
NAMES OF LOVE (R) [in FRENCH with subtitles] 102min 6:00 and 8:15
Energetic, young star Sara Forestier won the actress César this year for
her performance in this multi-cultural, star-crossed love story. She
plays free-spirit Baya Benmahmoud, an extroverted liberal who lives by the
old adage, "make love not war" to convert conservative right-wing men to
her left-leaning causes by sleeping with them. Then she meets Arthur
Martin, a middle aged biologist who specializes in avian diseases, but he
is not so easily seduced; this only encourages her further. Michel
Leclerc directs this clever and witty romantic comedy.

closet, promising to return to free him. In present-day Paris, American
journalist Julia Jarmond (an excellent Kirsten Scott Thomas) has been
commissioned to write an article about the notorious Velodrome d'Hiver
roundup of French Jews by their countrymen. She soon realizes she and her
husband live in an apartment that his family has owned since that summer
in 1942, one once owned by these deported people. Based on the
best-selling detective story by Tatiana de Rosnay, director Gilles
Paquet-Brenner has made a powerful and absorbing film.

[Reel Pizza] Schedule Sept 30 - Oct 20

Hey y'all~

here is the next schedule of films that runs Sept 29 - October 20, 2011.

The final IMPROVISION for this year is coming up October 14th, and BONUS
it is back to Friday night. If you haven't checked out the genius of the
ImprovAcadia troupe, this would be a good opportunity!

Hope you find something that piques your interest on these increasingly
dark autumn days. No times until we know what is playing on our other
screen. Back with you next week and See you soon!

-Lisa and Chris

ps. Would you all be interested in receiving a pdf file of the completed
movie schedule, like what I snail-mail out? I don't want to burden your
inbox, but you might find it helpful....

*******************
*******************

Friday Oct 14 IMPROVISION 11pm LAST EDITION OF THE YEAR!
Come check out our occasional, wacky collaboration with the talented
ImprovAcadia crew. With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group of
up-and-coming comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound
effects to a cheesy grade-B movie THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. Their
talents make the pictures on the screen much funnier than they were ever
anticipated. Its a totally new show every time. Don't miss out on all
the fun!

*******************

Fri Sept 30 - Mon Oct 3
THE GUARD (R) 96min [partly in Gaelic with subtitles]
Brendon Gleeson and Don Cheadle both give excellent performances in this
entertaining and offbeat buddy-cop comedy. Set in County Galway in rural
Ireland, this fun film follows an unorthodox, small town cop (Gleeson) who
inserts himself into a drug investigation and must join forces with a
straight-laced FBI agent (Cheadle) to take on an international smuggling
gang. The direction is by John Michael McDonagh, brother to the director
of the also fun film, In Bruges.

Tues Oct 4 - Thurs Oct 6
MEEK'S CUTOFF (PG) 104min
Three families travel by covered wagon across the Cascades in search of a
new home or even just some water in American independent filmmaker Kelly
Reichardt's (Wendy and Lucy) newest release. Based on the diaries of
Oregon Trail settlers, this poetic and evocative original follows the
arduous journey as these families follow hired guide Stephen Meek to lead
them across the mountains. When they become lost they are faced with a
decision, to continue following Meek who they know is unreliable or
entrust themselves to a Native American, who they always considered a
natural enemy.

Coming during this schedule on our second screen?

CONTAGION (PG-13) 106min
Director Stephen Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich) has made an
engrossing, harrowing medical thriller with a top shelf cast. Gwyneth
Paltrow is Patient Zero, the first to die from an easily spread virus that
starts off innocently with slight cold symptoms that within days morphs

selling a homeopathic remedy whose writing does not calm the masses. This
is a intelligent, entertaining disaster movie that might make you a
believer in antibacterial soap.

THE DEBT (R) 113min
Helen Mirren and Jennifer Chastain (The Help) play Mossad agent Rachel
Singer in two different eras. A 1997 event celebrating the publication of
a story written by her daughter of her heroic efforts on behalf of Israel
thirty years ago makes her uncomfortable. As she reads aloud, the story
of the 1966 capture by Ms. Singer and her ex-husband Steven (Tom Wilkenson
and Marton Csoka) and the mysterious David (Ciarin Hinds and Sam
Worthington) of a fugitive Nazi-era war criminal masquerading as a
gynecologist in Berlin (Jesper Christensen) becomes clearer. This taut,
riveting thriller from director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) is based
on a well-regarded 1997 Israeli film Ha-Hov.

DRIVE (R) 100min
Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love) shifts gears again to play Driver, the
main character in this contemporary film noir set on the back streets of
Los Angeles. His days are spent as a stunt man for Hollywood pictures,
while in his evenings he moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals.

stylishly suspenseful and entertaining film, based on the pulp novel by
James Sallis, won Nicholas Winding Refn the directing prize at this year's
Cannes Festival.

MONEYBALL (PG-13) 133min
Wright.

Coming Next Schedule?

Mozart's Sister
The Three Musketeers
Higher Ground
The Ides of March
The Big Year

[Reel Pizza] update Sept 23 - 29

hi everyone

Starting Friday, by popular demand (an understatment if ever I made one!)
we return THE HELP for another week, hopefully to provide for those of you
who were unable to get tickets last week...Where is Arthur Weasley when
you need him most???

see you soon~
Lisa

Fri Sept 23 - Thursday Sept 29 back by popular demand!
THE HELP (PG-13) 149min 5:30 and 8:30

Fri Sept 23 - Mon Sept 26
TERRI (R)* 105min 6:00 and 8:15
(*Roger Ebert mentions that the R rating on this film is absurd.)

Tues Sept 27 - Thursday Sept 29
POINT BLANK (R) 84min [in FRENCH w. subtitles] 6:00 and 8:00

Fri Sept 23 - Thurs Sept 29
THE HELP (PG-13) 137min 5:30 and 8:30
Based on Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel, this new film explores the
plight of black maids in Civil Rights Era Jackson, Mississippi with both
gravity and affecting humor, raised by excellent performances. Skeeter
(Emma Stone) is just graduated from Ol'Miss and returned to her childhood
home and friends. She has taken a job with the local paper writing a
housekeeping column, and hopes to get assistance from the maids, including
Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, of her friends (whom she is finding
increasingly racist). Soon she decides what she would really like to do
is write a story of the maids' experiences working for these women. But
getting these women to talk to her is a challenge, especially with the
racial unrest.

Fri Sept 23 - Mon Sept 26
TERRI (R) 105min 6:00 and 8:15
This unpredictable and honestly complex coming-of-age comedy stars John C.
Reilly as a slightly outrageous and hapless vice-principal who guides a
group of high-school misfits, including Terri (Jacob Wysocki), an awkward,
gentle and overweight teen who wears pajamas to school because they are
comfortable, Heather, the unattainable, beautiful blonde girl of his
dreams, and Chad, an edgy, odd outcast. Directed by Azazel Jacobs
(Momma's Man) from a series of short stories by screenwriter Patrick
DeWitt, this rich and carefully made film is quite funny. Roger Ebert
mentions (again) that the R rating is absurd.

Tues Sept 27 - Thurs Sept 29
POINT BLANK (R) 84min [in French with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:00
An act of kindness by Samuel, a hospital nurse's aide, toward one of his
patient results first in his being honored as a hero, then in his pregnant
wife being kidnapped by vicious gangsters. In this breakneck-paced,
thrilling chase film that explores all sides of Paris from French director
Fred Cavayé, Samuel becomes a fugitive and must find his wife before she
is killed while evading both the notorious criminals that want his patient
dead, as well as dueling police commanders on his tail.

to be a fun time. For more information on these events you can check out
their website www.AcadiaNightSkyFestival.com. And be sure to check out
this mid-week's film NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT, a documentary that
juxtaposes the searching for life in the Chile's Atacama Desert, both
across the universe at the observatories there, and from the past,
including pre-Columbian mummies and "the disappeared" victims of the
Pinochet regime.

We hope to see you this weekend!
-Lisa, Chris and Colin

and 8:00
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13) 94min 5:30 and 7:30

*****************

Tues Sept 20 – Thurs Sept 22
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13) 94min 5:30 and 7:30
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND - LAST CHANCE! The City of Lights in three
separate eras is the setting for Woody Allen's latest literate gem, a
charming and engaging romantic comedy that muses on nostalgia. Owen
Wilson stars as Gil, a hack screenwriter who is working on but unsatisfied
with his first novel. He and his irritable fiancée (Rachel McAdams) have
traveled to Paris with her parents for a vacation. While he revels in the
artistic history surrounding them (he yearns to have lived in the Jazz Age
of the 1920s), she has plans to shop. One night out for a walk alone, he
is invited by a costumed American couple in a stylish old car to a party
and the magic begins.

Tues Sept 20 – Thurs Sept 22
NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT (NR) 90min [in Spanish with subtitles] 6:00
and 8:00
Master Chilean filmmaker and political documentarian Patricio Guzmán
travels to 10,000 feet above sea level to the Atacama Desert where
astronomers gather from all over the world because the clear, dry air
allows them to see to the edges of the galaxy. This clear, dry air also
preserves human remains, from pre-Columbian mummies and 19th century
explorers to the victims of political persecution in the 1970s after the
US supported military coup of the democratically elected President ushered
in the reign of dictator Augusto Pinochet. Today, while the scientists
examine the boundaries of the universe, women relatives of the more
recently missing still search for the remains of their loved ones. In
this haunting, mesmerizing and gorgeous film, the director posits that
astronomy and archaeology are both variations on a quest for life, one
searching the sky, the other the earth.

[Reel Pizza] schedule Sept 9 - 29

Hi, I apologize for being late, but there has been a lot going on the last
few weeks in my world...Happy September!

AND, as there is also A LOT going on during the next three weeks, I am
going to separate it into two parts. This part will deal with the regular
film schedule and special events. The next part will deal specifically
with the 3rd MIFF By-the-Sea Film Festival that is scheduled for Sept 16 -
19. See you soon!

-Lisa

****************

On Sunday September 11th from 1:30pm to 3pm, we will host an open
community forum to address questions and reflections about 9/11 and the
challenges ahead. A panel of speakers, including Rep. Elsie Flemings,
will also present their thoughts, and the program will be moderated by Ron
Beard. For more information, please contact deacon Jenny Reese at
revdrjmr@gmail.com.

****************

FILM SCHEDULE:

Fri Sept 9 – Thurs Sept 15
THE HELP (PG-13) 137min 5:30 and 8:15
Based on Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel, this new film explores the
plight of black maids in Civil Rights Era Jackson, Mississippi with both
gravity and affecting humor, raised by excellent performances.

Fri Sept 9 – Mon Sept 12
ANOTHER EARTH (PG-13) 92min 6:00 and 8:00
This Sundance-winning film is the feature debut of director Mike Cahill,
co-written with star Brit Marling. She stars as Rhoda, a young
astrophysics student at MIT who aspires to explore the cosmos. Her path
crosses that of modern composer and Yale professor John Burroughs (William
Mapother) at the dawn of the discovery of a parallel Earth within viewing
distance of our own planet. Tragedy strikes and the lives of these two
become irrevocably intertwined. This intriguing, independent drama with
strong acting is imaginative and suspenseful.

Tues Sept 13 - Thurs Sept 15
UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES (NR) 114min [in THAI with
subtitles] 6:00 and 8:30
Winner of last year's Grand Prize at the Cannes Film festival, this
hauntingly beautiful and unconventional fable from acclaimed director
Apichatpong Weerasethakul explores the connection between this life and
the spirit world. A Buddhist farmer suffering from kidney failure spends
his final days in his forest jungle home with his sister-in-law, and a
Laotian assistant, discussing his various incarnation during his past
lives, and the karmic consequences of his youthful participation in
military conflicts against the Communists, and the bugs he has eradicated
on his farm over the years. He also is visited by ghosts, including his
long-dead wife and long-lost son as he prepares for his next journey.

****************

Fri Sept 16 - Mon Sept 19
MIFF by-the-Sea
We are delighted for a third time to bring to Bar Harbor a
"best-of-the-fest" selection from this summer's 13th Maine International
Film Festival. Please look at the separately mailed flyer for the
schedule of films that we will show, from early afternoon to late at
night. Things kick off on Friday at 4pm with a catered opening
celebration ($15). Over the weekend several filmmakers and subjects have
graciously offered to attend to talk about their work. Film descriptions
are available on the website, or if you don't have access, please ask at
the theatre and we will have a printed sheet to give out. Full Program
booklets will be available at Reel Pizza soon. Tickets are now available
for $8.00, in advance at the box office or over the phone with a credit
card (add 50c service); for the festival, no Big Tickets will be honored.
We hope you will join us during this special weekend.

****************

Tues Sept 20 – Thurs Sept 22
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13) 94min 5:30 and 7:30
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND The City of Lights in three separate eras is the
setting for Woody Allen's latest literate gem, a charming and engaging
romantic comedy that muses on nostalgia. Owen Wilson stars as Gil, a hack
screenwriter who is working on but unsatisfied with his first novel. He
and his irritable fiancée (Rachel McAdams) have travelled to Paris with
her parents for a vacation. While he revels in the artistic history
surrounding them (he yearns to have lived in the Jazz Age of the 1920s),
she has plans to shop. One night out for a walk alone, he is invited by a
costumed American couple in a stylish old car to a party and the magic
begins.

****************

Fri Sept 23 - Mon Sept 26
TERRI (R) 105min

POINT BLANK (R) 84min [in French with subtitles]
An act of kindness by Samuel, a hospital nurse's aide, toward one of his
patient results first in his being honored as a hero, then in his pregnant
wife being kidnapped by vicious gangsters. In this breakneck-paced,
thrilling chase film that explores all sides of Paris from French director
Fred Cavayé, Samuel becomes a fugitive and must find his wife before she
is killed while evading both the notorious criminals that want his patient
dead, as well as dueling police commanders on his tail.

****************

COMING ON OUR SECOND SCREEN?
MONEYBALL (not yet rated) 90min
Wright.

COMING NEXT SCHEDULE?
THE GUARD
OUR IDIOT BROTHER
MOZART'S SISTER
THE DEBT
SARAH'S KEY

[Reel Pizza] update Sept 2 - 8

hi everyone

Here is the schedule of films for this coming week, and I am even able to
give you a peek at the next couple of weeks. Hopefully this will answer
some burning questions. I will send the upcoming full schedule early next
week.

The film for this coming week, over Labor Day weekend, will be RISE OF THE
PLANET OF THE APES. The following week (starting Sept 9), we will be
screening THE HELP, and the weekend after that (Sept 16th - 19th) is the
third annual MIFF By-the-Sea Film Festival. You will be getting more
information on the film festival shortly, but if you are interested in
what is playing, as long as you don't mind not knowing exactly when, you
can go our website and read more on the MIFF-Basic Info Tab.

Also I want to give you a heads up on a recently scheduled weekend
afternoon event coming up. We will be hosting a Community Forum on Sunday
afternoon Sept 11th beginning at 1:30pm. All members of the MDI community
are invited to share their personal reflections on the tenth anniversary
of 9/11 and their thoughts on what we have learned, how we have changed,
and the challenge in front of us. A panel of speakers including
Representative Elsie Flemings will also speak to these points. The Forum,
to be moderated by University of Maine Cooperative Extension Professor and
WERU radio show host Ron Beard, is intended to include the voices of
everyone across the whole spectrum of political, religious, and cultural
affiliations. For more information please contact Jenny Reece, deacon at
St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor at revdrjmr@gmail.com

August is going out gloriously. Hope you are out enjoying these last days
of mindless summer freedom. Because when I email you next week, many of
us will be back at school!

-Lisa

****************

ok, here is this week's schedule:

Fri 9/2 - Thu 9/8 RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (PG-13) 105min 5:30 & 8:15
Fri 9/2 - Mon 9/5 A BETTER LIFE (PG-13) 98min 6:00 and 8:30
Tue 9/6 - Thu 9/8 PAGE ONE: Inside the New York Times (R) 88min 6:00 & 8:00

****************

Fri Sept 2 - Thurs Sept 8
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (PG-13) 105min 5:30 & 8:15
This "origins" story from British director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) has
the best reviews of this summer's crop of action films, both for its
reality-based cautionary tale and for the seamless visual effects; plus it
stands on its own as an individual film. Andy Serkis (LOTR, King Kong)
gives a terrific motion-capture performance as Caesar, an orphaned chimp,
raised by genetics scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) trying to work out
a drug to cure Alzheimer's disease, afflicting his father. Defending the
grandfather, Caesar gets himself into trouble and lands in monkey jail
where he causes the other inmates, including orangutans and gorillas to
revolt against Mankind.

Fri Sept 2 - Mon Sept 5
A BETTER LIFE (PG-13) 98min [partly in Spanish with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:30
From director Chris Weitz (About a Boy), this touching and poignant
multi-generational story is about a father's love and the lengths a parent
will go to give his child opportunities he never had. Demián Bichir gives
a masterful performance as Carlos, a struggling illegal day-laborer for a
landscape gardener. His is also raising his son (José Julián) alone,
trying to make ends meet while steering his teen clear of the lure of LA's
gangs and their easy money. It is a powerful and authentic story that
resonates with truth.

Tues Sept 6 - Thurs Sept 8
PAGE ONE: A Year Inside the New York Times (R) 88min 6:00 & 8:00
With unprecedented access to the Gray Lady's newsroom and the inner
workings of her Media Desk, this engrossing and enlightening documentary
is a nuanced portrait of a revered institution at a crossroads,
chronicling the transformation of the media industry at a time of greatest
turmoil. Grappling with challenges such as WikiLeaks, constantly evolving
platforms such as Twitter and tablets, and an increasing expectation that
news should be free, the writers, editors and publishers struggle to stay
vital and solvent. But director Andrew Rossi also shows that rigorous
journalism is vibrant and thriving.

"In the hands of a free spirit, the cinema is a magnificent and
dangerous weapon."-- Luis Buñuel
Can't get enough of Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'? Come catch a double
feature from two of that film's most indelible characters: Luis Buñuel and
Salvador Dalí. Made in 1929 and 1930, these films are a one-two punch of
savage surrealist cinema that continues to inspire filmmakers today. We
are pleased to be presenting these films with live musical accompaniment
by multi-instrumentalist Sean Murphy. This should provide an
electrifying interplay with these two classic films. A rare treat.

Sierra Club who offers these films at no charge to get people focused on

butterflies across North America. NOVA's filmmakers followed monarchs on
the wing throughout their extraordinary 2000 mile odyssey to their
wintering grounds in the mountains of central Mexico. To capture a
butterfly's point of view, camera operators used a helicopter, ultralight,
and hot-air balloon for aerial views along the butterflies'
transcontinental route. Monarch butterfly expert Bill Calvert, featured
in the program, will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward.

Fri Aug 26 - Thurs Sept 1
CRAZY STUPID LOVE (PG-13) 118min 6:00 and 8:30
HELD OVER BY POPULAR DEMAND!
This enchanting comedy of romantic confusion stars Steve Carell as Cal, a
straight-laced father of two with the perfect life who finds his world
crumbling around him when his wife (Julianne Moore) tells him she has
cheated on him and wants a divorce. Now he spends his evenings sulking
alone at the local bar, where handsome Lothario Jacob (Ryan Gosling) takes
this sad sack under his wing and teaches him about the many options
available to meet new women. His makeover provides him with many new
conquests, but his heart still pines for his ex. Meanwhile, his teenager
son has a crush on the babysitter, who is crazy about his "new" dad.
Directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (I Love You Phillip Morris, Bad
Santa) have made a smart, satisfying, and hilariously funny comedy.

Fri Aug 26 - Mon Aug 29
BEGINNERS (R) 104min 5:30 and 8:00
Sweet, touching and funny, this is the second film from graphic artist
Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), a distinctive director with a unique style.
Based on his own personal history, the story follows a man (Ewan
MacGregor) whose 75 year old father informs him, after the death of his
mother following a 45 year-long marriage, that he is and always has been
gay. The son, somewhat mortified with his father's announcement watches
as his father morphs from a distant parent into a lively, happy man who is
in a loving relationship with a much younger man (Goran Visnjic).
Remembering this transformation after his father's death challenges him in
his newly forming relationship with a young woman (Melanie Laurant) with
whom he is interested, but under normal circumstances would flee from at
the first hint of attraction.

Tues Aug 30 - Thurs Sept 1
THE FIRST GRADER (PG-13) 103min 5:30 and 8:00
Based on a true story, this heartfelt film follows the controversial
attempt of an elderly tribal farmer (Oliver Litundo), once a freedom
fighter against the British, in a remote mountaintop village to take
advantage of the Kenyan government's new promise of universal, free
education. Eventually the principal-teacher (Naomi Harris, Pirates of the
Caribbean) risks all, her career, her marriage, her safety, to help the
old man to learn to read. Director Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn
Girl) provides a rich and beautiful portrait of Kenya and her people,
while also exploring its more violent past, in this provocative and
uplifting tale.

[Reel Pizza] schedule Aug 19 - Sept 8

Here is the schedule that takes us beyond Labor Day! We have two special
programs to offer, one late night and one matinee, and new art gracing our
lobby walls, in addition to our regular film program. No times are listed
on this schedule, as we will be returning to booking the week-long screen
on a Monday for Friday basis.

-Lisa and crew

**************************

NEW ART Ethan Pierce, Portland Maine
"It is my personal belief that visual art is a medium like any other-the
purpose of which is to allow the creator of the piece to birth his or her
emotions and beliefs in physical form and thus to insinuate to the viewer
a more concrete image of the abstract feelings and or ideas that the
author wishes to convey. When I draw, paint, act, write, or perform any
other creatively based task, my objective is to create a piece that
reflects what I feel or think at that moment-be it joy, anger,
frustration, peace or any number of elemental emotions. The physical act
of painting helps me to understand things about myself, my thoughts and
values."

THE HELP (PG-13) 137min

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (PG-13) 110min

SIERRA CLUB SUMMER SERIES #3
GREENFIRE (NR) 72min Sunday 8/14 2pm
Aldo Leopold is considered by many to be the father of wildlife management
and the US wilderness system. After a career in the US Forest Service in
the southwest, he transferred to Wisconsin and worked in ecological
restoration on his family farm, while teaching game management at
University of Wisconsin. A collection of his essays examining humanities
relationship to the natural world, A Sand County Almanac, was published
just after his death, and remains one of the most respected books about
the environment ever written. Led by Leopold's biographer Dr. Curt Meine,
this new film provocatively examines the legendary conservationist's
thinking, renewing his idea of a land ethic for a population facing 21 st
century ecological challenges. Using archival documents and photographs
as well as historical and contemporary footage of the landscapes that
influenced him as well as those he influenced, this film traces his
journey toward the key insight that was the culmination of his life's
work, that we are responsible for the health of our natural world.

IMPROVISION Sunday 8/14 11pm
Improvision is our occasional, wacky collaboration with the talented
ImprovAcadia crew. With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group of
up and coming comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound
effects to a cheesy grade-B movie that they have never seen before! Their
talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they were ever
anticipated. It's a totally new show every time.

Fri 8/12 - Thurs 8/18
HORRIBLE BOSSES (R) 98min 6:00 and 8:00
Three horrible bosses (Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer
Aniston)…that is what three friends (Jason Batemen, Charlie Day and Jason
Sudeikis) have and complain about. They can't quit because they know
there are no other jobs out there. What starts off as an imaginary and
far-fetched premise developed over beers at the pub devolves, with the
help and advice from a terrifying ex-con (Jamie Foxx), into unsavory,
doomed-to-fail and absolutely silly pandemonium. TV and Documentary
director Seth Gordon (King of Kong) gets pitch perfect performances from
his cast in a fun film where the wildly outrageous situations spiral into
increasing chaos.

Fri 8/12 - Mon 8/15
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13) 94min 5:30 and 7:45
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
The City of Lights in three separate eras is the setting for Woody Allen's
latest literate gem, a charming and engaging romantic comedy that muses on
nostalgia. Owen Wilson stars as Gil, a hack screenwriter who is working
on but unsatisfied with his first novel. He and his irritable fiancée
(Rachel McAdams) have traveled to Paris with her parents for a vacation.
While he revels ins the artistic history surrounding them (he yearns to
have lived in the Jazz Age of the 1920s), she has plans to shop. One
night out for a walk alone, he is invited by a costumed American couple in
a stylish old car to a party and the magic begins.

Tues 8/16 - Thurs 8/18
BRIDE FLIGHT (R) 130min [partly in Dutch with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:15
Eager to escape the damp and suffocating atmosphere of post-war Holland,
three young Dutch women look to a better life in New Zealand. They meet on
the immigration flight to their new country, where they are to join their
fiancés and marry. During the flight, the three women form a bond of
friendship among themselves, and with Frank, an attractive young man who
wants to set up a winery. On their arrival, all four part ways to start a
new life. Yet their paths continue to cross. An outing that reunites all
four turns into a near. Only 50 years later do they all come together
again, perhaps closer now than ever before. This was a well-received
title in last year's MIFF-by-the-Sea film festival, now in general
release.
