[Reel Pizza] update April 3 - 9

Before I forget, let me mention that there will be NO SENIOR MATINEE on this coming Thursday April 2.  Among many reasons, Chris is out of town.  We will resume the following week into April though.  Stay tuned for what is next.

Here is next week's schedule.  Happy Easter everyone!  Hope the Easter Bunny is still wearing his warm white coat this year.

4/3 - 4/9    FOCUS  (R)  105min   6:00 and 8:30
4/3 - 4/6    MCFARLAND, USA  (PG)  129min   5:30 and 8:00
4/7 - 4/9    RED ARMY  (PG)  85min   5:30 and 7:30

Fri Apr 3 - Thurs Apr 9
FOCUS  (R)  105min   6:00 and 8:30
Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned con artist who becomes romantically involved with beautiful novice Jess (Margot Robbie, Wolf of Wall Street). As he's teaching her the tricks of the trade, she becomes an unwanted distraction and gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame--now an accomplished femme fatale--shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky's latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop...and the consummate con man off his game.  Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love) have made an enjoyable, breezy escapist fun rom-com-con between two people who can never trust each other.  trailer

Fri Apr 3 - Mon Apr 6
MCFARLAND, USA  (PG)  129min   5:30 and 8:00
This fully entertaining and heartwarming film about the unexpected success of an immigrant community's high school sports team rises well above expectation with straightforward direction by Niki Caro (Whale Rider); this film isn't sappy or filled with cliché and earns its payoff.  Kevin Costner is great as a disgraced coach who finds himself moving his family to California's central valley, to a poor town of Mexican immigrants where kids work the fields both before and after school.  Based on a true story, he tries to convince them to run cross country instead of failing at football, while the locals wonder about their new, non-Latino neighbors.  trailer

Tues Apr 7 - Thurs Apr 9
RED ARMY  (PG)  85min   5:30 and 7:30
This fascinating documentary, both humorous and enlightening, explores the geopolitical consequences of cold war politics and national pride on the Russian ice hockey dynasty.  Fully entertaining for both fans and non-fans of sports, filmmaker Gabe Polsky explores the history of this incredibly talented and successful team and its members, especially team captain Slava Fetisov, as these athletes' lives cross some of the most earth-shattering political events of the past century and they are transformed from national heroes to political enemies.  trailer

[Reel Pizza] Reminders & Update Mar 13 - 19

Hi
Drip, drip, drip... a sound so lovely to my ears!  Time to tap, if you can get to your trees!

Two reminders for the remainder of this week.
1.)  Tonight Wednesday, there is NO early show of KINGSMAN due to the special Pecha Kucha event at 5:30.  There will be a later show of KINGSMAN at 8:30.
2.)  Tomorrow Thursday, despite whatever else you may have seen, read or heard, the Senior Matinee is ANTARCTICA: A Year on Ice at 1pm.

No special events here at Reel Pizza this weekend for the first time in a long while;  Good luck to our HS Jazz bands going to play at the State Competition in South Portland this weekend!

See you soon.

Here is the upcoming week's schedule:
3/13 - 3/19    BLACK SEA  (R)  115min  6:00 and 8:30
3/13 - 3/16    BIG EYES  (PG-13)  106min  5:30 and 8:00
3/17 - 3/19    BLACK OR WHITE  (PG-13)  121min  5:30 and 8:00

Fri 3/13 - Thurs 3/19
BLACK SEA  (R)  115min  6:00 and 8:30
This suspenseful action thriller, well-directed by Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) centers on a laid-off Scottish salvage submarine captain (Jude Law) who pulls together a misfit crew of half Brits, including an excellent Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) as the master diver, and half Russians to go after a sunken Nazi treasure reputed to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea off Crimea.  As greed and desperation take control on their claustrophobic and perhaps unseaworthy vessel, these men turn on each other to fight for their own survival.  trailer

Fri 3/13 - Mon 3/16
BIG EYES  (PG-13)  106min  5:30 and 8:00
Director Tim Burton (Ed Wood) explores another kitschy artist with his entertaining, fascinating and funny film of this stranger than fiction true story.  The popular but also wildly reviled art style of waif-like children with extra-large eyes from the 1950s and 1960s made charming artist Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) one of that eras most successful painters, until it eventually came out that in fact the works had all been made by his lonely, cloistered wife Margaret (Amy Adams) and Walter was in fact just a con artist who took credit and gained international fame with his wife's work.   trailer

Tues 3/17 - Thurs 3/19
BLACK OR WHITE  (PG-13)  121min  5:30 and 8:00
Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer give excellent performances in this story of a custody battle for an interracial child.  The maternal grandfather, a well-to-do retiree, has been raising this beloved little girl with his wife after the death during childbirth of his daughter.  When his wife suddenly dies and he is left to care for her alone, the girl's paternal grandmother, a successful realtor in an impoverished area, seeks custody to raise her with her father's people, although he has never had a relationship with her.  This provocative, relevant and thoughtful film shows both the frustration and insight into the racial conundrum.  trailer

Fri 3/6 - Thurs 3/12
KINGSMAN: The Secret Service  (R)  100min   6:00* (not Wed) and 8:30
Colin Firth is quite dapper as a veteran spy in a super-secret organization charged with grooming a replacement for a fallen agent, an unrefined street kid (Taron Egerton).  His job becomes increasingly complicated by a villainous plot threatening the globe by an internet entrepreneur (Samuel L. Jackson).  Based on a graphic novel, this absurd but witty and thrillingly fun action comedy from director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) both spoofs and celebrates the James Bond franchise (also Jason Bourne).  trailer

Fri 3/6 - Mon 3/9
MR. TURNER  (R)  149min   5:15 and 8:15
The English romantic artist whose work anticipated the Impressionists, JMW Turner (Timothy Spall, winner of Cannes Best Actor prize) was an eccentric but in some ways an ordinary man, who was a master of light.  This fascinating portrait of this tireless artist at the pinnacle of his career is by master filmmaker Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Topsy Turvy) making a rare historical drama.  From his life with his beloved father and the housekeeper who loves him, to the seaside landlady with whom he resides at the end of his life, he is both celebrated and loathed by the public and aristocracy.  This superior historical recreation is an involving and rewarding film.   trailer

Tues 3/10 - Thurs 3/12
ANTARCTICA: A Year on the Ice  (PG)  92min   5:30 and 7:45
Stunningly beautiful, this entertaining documentary about the rare folks who overwinter in one of the harshest environments on Earth is from communications engineer turned filmmaker Anthony Powell.  He shot the footage over his ten winters in Antarctica, mostly at McMurdo station but also at others, and has a special affinity for spectacular time-lapse photography which evokes a sense of place.  Isolated from the rest of the world, the close-knit community of scientists, technicians and craftsmen endure both the beauty and brutality of a pristine wilderness most humans will never experience.   trailer
