[Reel Pizza] Schedule Feb 28 - Mar 20

E-Greetings Everyone~

This next schedule runs thru the First Day of SPRING.  Time to start thinking about starting seeds and tapping trees.  That sounds like good news to me!

We have two special programs coming up during this time that I will remind you of, and another just as the next schedule begins to tell you about.

This is a fully booked schedule, so there are showtimes for all the titles listed.

Please be aware that on Oscar Sunday, we will only have 1pm matinees of our two films scheduled for that day.  We encourage you to stop at the Jesup Library and pick up tickets to the evening's Gala.  The library ladies have been concocting a bunch of fun ideas to spice up the festivities; it is sure to be a grand time.

The next weekend, on Sunday Mar 9 at 1:30pm, the Acadia Family Center will be presenting a free screening of the documentary THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE, with a brief discussion to follow.  We hope you can join us to learn more about how our community can help and accept people in recovery from addiction.

Coming up on the afternoon of Sunday March 23, we will be hosting the Conners-Emerson school's class of 2014 as they have a fundraiser to help cover the costs of their 8th grade graduation activities.  Details are still being confirmed, but we expect them to have a Fabulous (Family-friendly) movie, Fabulous Live Music, and a Fabulous Silent Auction.  I will let you know more soon!

See you Soon!

OSCAH'NIGHT is Sunday Mar 2nd! This year the organizer and beneficiary is the Jesup Memorial Library.  The library ladies are busy coming up with lots of interesting activities for the pre-show time.  There will be prizes for costumes and dress-up, and correct balloting.  Delicious hors d'oeuvres, complimentary glass of champagne, red carpet will all be returning. Tickets ($15 each, couple for $25) are available at the Library desk during their regular hours, and any tickets still available will be for sale at the Box office on that Sunday afternoon.  Remember that we will only have 1pm matinees of our regular films on Oscar Sunday.

Sunday March 9th at 1:30pm we will be screening THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE (NR) 88min, presented by The Acadia Family Center.  The film is free and open to the public.  This powerful documentary features real stories about the 23.5 million Americans living in long-term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.  Deeply entrenched social stigma and discrimination have kept recovery voices silent and faces hidden for decades, and fostered a feeling of hopelessness around this treatable disease.  The Anonymous People tells the story of successful, long-term recovery through the faces and voices of real people including award-winning actress Kristen Johnston, former NBA star Chris Herren; Tara Conner, Miss USA 2006; former congressman Patrick Kennedy; veteran news anchor Laurie Dohue and many others.  This film aims at transforming public discourse around addiction recovery in order to spark widespread change.  Produced and directed by Greg Williams, the film is presented FREE by the Acadia Family Center, which offers resources for recovery to our community.  A brief discussion will follow the film.  trailer

Fri Mar 7 - Thurs Mar 13

WOLF OF WALL STREET  (R)  180min  5:00 and  8:30

Oscar nominee Martin Scorsese returns with another sensationally entertaining study in bad behavior.  In this provocative, inventive, and sharply funny film, he directs an electrifying Leonardo DiCaprio as notorious stockbroker Jordan Belfort who, in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, defrauded his investors and used their money to fund a life of insane debauchery.  Jonah Hill is terrific as his even more immoral sidekick, as well as Matt McCanaughey as his early mentor, Jean Dujardin as his Swiss Banker, and Rob Reiner as his outspoken father.  DiCaprio and Hill both received Best Actor nominations, Screenwriter Terence Winter is nominated for adapting Belfort’s audacious memoir, and the film is up for Best Picture.

Fri Mar 7 - Mon Mar 10

THE INVISIBLE WOMAN  (R)  111min  5:30 and 8:00

Nelly (Felicity Jones), a happily married mother and schoolteacher is haunted by her past.  Her memories, provoked by remorse and guilt, keep returning to her long-time and unknown relationship with famous author and playwright Charles Dickens (Ralph Feinnes), a controlling and emotionally isolated man despite his success.  At a young age and with the blessing of her mother (Kirsten Scott Thomas), she becomes his secret muse and mistress, and her life, until his death thirteen years later, becomes invisible.  This is the second film from actor Feinnes (Coriolanus) adapted from the Dicken’s biography by Claire Tomalin.

Tues Mar 11 - Thurs Mar 13

MAIDENTRIP  (NR)  82min  [partly in Dutch with subtitles]   5:30 and 7:30

This uplifting coming-of-age documentary tells the true story of 14-year-old Dutch teen Laura Dekker who, over the course of two years, fulfills a dream to sail solo around the world.  You might remember the legal battle that erupted in her home country when it came out that her father was going to allow her to take this journey.  Filmmaker Jillian Schlesinger used footage taken at sea by Laura and cameras mounted on her boat “Guppy”, as well as filming at all of her landings, including the Canary Island, the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, Australia and South Africa, presenting a portrait of a growing young woman exploring the world in search of freedom and adventure.

Fri Mar 14 - Thurs Mar 20

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY  (R)  130min   5:45 and  8:30

Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts both earned Oscar-nominations and headline this adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play by the playwright Tracy Letts.  Directed by John Wells (The Company Men, TVs ER), the divergent lives of the strong-willed women (Roberts, Juliette Lewis, and Julianne Nicholson) of the Weston family who have come together after a family crisis, and all find themselves at their Midwestern childhood home with their caustic and vitriolic mother (Streep).  This story of a dysfunctional family is dark, witty and finally touching.

Fri Mar 14 - Mon Mar 17
LEGO MOVIE  (PG)  101min  5:30 and 8:00

An outstanding and entertaining animation for kids and adults both, this latest film from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street) explores the difference between following the directions and departing the text, in life and in Lego.  The imaginative story follows ordinary mini-figure Emmet, an obscure conformist thrust into the lime-light when he is mistaken for the most extraordinary person, the key to saving the world from an evil tyrant’s quest, a task to which he is woefully unprepared.

Tues Mar 18 - Thurs Mar 20

THE ROCKET  (NR)  96min   5:30 and 8:00

This delightful small film is the feature debut of Australian documentary filmmaker Kim Mordaunt.  His film, inspired after making a documentary about Laotian children involved in bomb disposal, tells the story of a Laotian boy who, at birth, is believed by his elders to bring bad luck.  But he lives and as a teen his family is dislocated from their home because of the building of a dam.  After a calamity-filled journey through a land scarred by war, the boy sets out to prove he is not cursed by entering the most lucrative but dangerous competition in his country meant to bring on the drought-ending rains – the rocket festival.
