THE HOBBIT(PG-13)169min Director Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth, adapting JRR Tolkien’s prequel to the Lord of the Rings, and making the first remarkable and entrancing part of what will become a trilogy of films.Here we are introduced to a young Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) a sedentary hobbit with no sense of adventure who is cajoled by wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen reprising his LOTR role) and thirteen dwarves to leave his comfortable hobbit hole and participate in a burgling of a vicious dragon who long ago took over the elves’ mountain home and its treasure.On the journey fraught with peril he wins a certain ring from a curious creature he meets, Gollum (Andy Serkis, also reprising).

Richard Gere gives an excellent performance as a hedge-fund manager at a precipice in this taut thriller from first-time writer/director Nicholas Jarecki (brother to directors Eugene and Andrew).Gere’s powerful and über-wealthy Robert Miller is trying to sell his business quickly, as it secretly contains a $400 million hole from a deal gone bad, unbeknownst to his CFO and daughter (Brit Marling), while balancing obligations to his wife (Susan Sarandon) and his increasingly needy mistress.Unexpected tragedy brings an unwelcome investigation by a cynical detective (Tim Roth) and could put everything in jeopardy.

Saturday afternoon we host filmmaker Cecily Pingree at a screening of her film BETTING THE FARM, about Maine's Own Organic (MOO) milk; we will also welcome one of the downeast farmer families who are involved in this venture and also perhaps the CEO of the company; there will be time for discussion after the screening.
And Sunday afternoon, we have our last installment of the Sierra Club's Free Summer Environmental Film Series, screening the beautiful A THIRSTY WORLD; please come celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act and the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. The Executive director of the Maine Chapter Glen Brand and COA faculty member in Environmental Law, Ken Cline, will introduce the film and take questions after. There will be some doorprizes, I hear!
And we also have our regular schedule of films. This week we have departed the text, so to speak, and will be playing TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE. For those of you keeping track, the two films previously listed as coming on our 2nd screen that we haven't gotten to yet (TO ROME WITH LOVE and ROBOT AND FRANK) are booked for the next schedule -- I am working on that now. This new Clint Eastwood-Amy Adams-Justin Timberlake film, set in the world of baseball is offered opposite quirky, charming romantic comedy CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER and a fascinating portrait of the Chinese activist-artist in AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY.
