[Reel Pizza] schedule

hi everyone

There is nothing like dear friends visiting from out of town to put all
thoughts of office work to the back of my mind. My boss needs to get on
my case!

Here is the schedule of events at Reel Pizza from July 3rd through July
23rd. See you soon!

-Lisa and Chris

**********************
A few reminders: On the evening of July 4th (Saturday), we will not be
showing later screenings of either film, during the fireworks display.
Keep your fingers crossed that this incessant rain stops by then!!

Also, for the high summer months, IMPROVISION, our exciting, hysterical
collaboration with the talented folks at ImprovAcadia has moved to
alternate SUNDAYS starting at 11pm. The next installment is on Sunday
July 5th, followed by July 19th, August 2nd, August 16th, and August 30th.
In the fall they will be moving back to Friday nights. Hope you can make
time to come by and experience all the big-time fun!

Finally, don't forget to support our local farmers. We host a wonderful
farmer's market here in our parking lot on Wednesdays from 9am - 1pm.
Last week there were strawberries that were so delicious, and rumor has
it, that among other things, there may be peas this week (mmmmmm). Plus
LOTS of other delicious, healthy veggies, meats, dairy products, flowers
and prepared foods for you and your family. See you here.

************************

We will feature NEW ART in our lobby from Bar Harbor resident Anthony
Nicholson starting July 3rd.

"Growing up in Sydney Australia my family environment strongly focused on
the visual arts. With a keen appreciation of the great outdoors, be it
in the tiny garden of my mother's inner city house, or in the bush, or at
the beach, I first developed an interest in nature photography. My
professional career in the biological sciences circuitously led me to
living in Maine. The visual riches of rural Maine together with great
advances in digital photography provide me with an irresistible impetus to
follow my muse – the observation and documentation of the intricacies and
patterns of nature. Finding overlooked patterns and rhythms within the
natural environment, especially those associated with water in all its
many forms, is an ongoing pleasure. I hope that looking at our
surroundings in unusual and interesting ways will remind people of their
natural environment and the impact that humans have on it. See
differently, act locally, impact globally..."

**********************************

And of course we have film:

Tues June 30 - Thurs July 2 at 6:00 and 8:15
and Fri July 3 - Mon July 6 at 5:30 and 7:45* no later show on 7/4 UP
(PG) 96min
A cranky, older widower and former balloon salesman (Ed Asner) attempts to
escape his neighborhood's gentrification and fulfill a lifelong dream by
floating his house away for an adventure, alone, to a remote South
American rainforest, only to discover that a young wilderness explorer has
stowed away on his craft and is coming with him. This latest Pixar
animated film, another great one from a venerated studio and
writer/director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc, writer of Wall-E and Toy
Story.) is a hilarious and suspenseful journey to an unexplored world with
an unlikely pair of mates.

Friday July 3 - Thursday July 9
THE HANGOVER (R) 99min 6:00 and 8:15* no later show on 7/4
Director Todd Phillips (Old School) has made an outrageous buddy story and
detective yarn, a profanely raunchy comedy that could be the hit of the
summer. The story follows three groomsmen who take their groom on a
bachelor's overnight to Vegas before the wedding. They wake up the next
morning remembering nothing of the night before but, their groom has gone
missing. Plus there's a baby in the closet, and a snarling tiger in the
bathroom, one of them has a missing tooth, another a hospital bracelet,
and the claim check they give the hotel valet delivers them a police car.
Quickly, with pounding heads they must backtrack and recreate the previous
night's events in hopes of finding their groom in time for the wedding in
Los Angeles. It is twisted, clever, and must see.

Tues July 7 - Thurs July 9
THE BROTHERS BLOOM (PG-13) 113min 5:30 and 8:00
This energetic, touching and quirky screwball comedy, the second film from
director Rian Johnson (Brick) is reminiscent of early Wes Anderson. Mark
Ruffalo (Zodiac), as shady Stephen, and Adrian Brody (Cadillac Records),
as dreamer Bloom, star as orphaned siblings, now grown, who have gotten by
their whole lives by scamming people. When Bloom wants out of the game
for good, Stephen convinces him to join him on one last con, of a
reclusive but adorable millionaire heiress with a lust for adventure
(Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener). Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) is
hysterical in a nearly silent performance as BangBang, the brother's
sidekick.

**************************

Friday July 10 - Thursday July 16
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS (PG) 94min 5:30 and 7:45
Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Dennis Leary reprise their roles as Manny
the mammoth, Sid the sloth, and Diego the saber-toothed tiger in this new
installment of the popular animated show. Diego wonders if he's gone too
soft hanging with his plant-eating friends. Jealous of the impending
birth of Manny and Ellie's baby mammoth, Sid finds and hatches some eggs,
because he wants a family too. But it gets him into trouble, as they have
been stolen from a humongous mama; she steals them back, along with Sid,
and the gang has to rescue him from an underground tropical paradise…that
is full of supposedly extinct animals like dinosaurs and carnivorous
plants that might like to eat them up!

Starting July 10th through at least Tuesday July 14
THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 (R) 121min 6:00 and 8:30
Denzel Washington and John Travolta star in this sleek, fast-paced and
tension-filled remake of the 1974 classic. Travolta is the evil
mastermind who hijacks a NYC subway train and holds 18 passengers hostage
for an enormous ransom. Washington is the recently demoted transit
dispatcher whose ordinary day manning the controls turns to chaos as he
becomes the chief negotiator with the kidnapper who must use his vast
knowledge of the subway system to outwit the psychotic villain and save
the hostages before his hour runs out. This riveting summer entertainment
from director Tony Scott (Crimson Tide) and writer Brian Helgeland (Mystic
River, LA Confidential) also features terrific performances by John
Turturro as the hostage negotiator and James Gandolfini as NYC's mayor in
supporting roles.

*************************

Fri July 17 - Mon July 20
EASY VIRTUE (PG-13) 97min
Adapted from a Noel Coward play by director Stephen Elliot (The Adventures
of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), this whimsical, witty costume comedy
of bad manners is a visual delight. When, in 1929, upper-crust Briton
John (Ben Barnes, Prince Caspian) brings home his new wife Larita (Jessica
Biel), a spunky American race car driver, his prim mother (Kristen Scott
Thomas) is seriously disappointed, but his battle-scarred father (Colin
Firth) seems approvingly amused by the situation; his two sisters aren't
sure what to make of their new sister-in-law. A short visit gets
extended, and scandalous personal details emerge that force everyone to
reconsider themselves. The excellent cast and stylish period details make
this a delightful, crowd-pleasing film.

Tues July 21 - Thurs July 23
RUDO Y CURSI (R) 103min [in Spanish with subtitles]
This charming comedy about two brothers, both buddies and rivals trying to
find a hold onto any opportunity to escape poverty, features Diego Luna
(Milk) and Gael García Bernal (Motorcycle Diaries), reunited for the first
time since their breakout film Y Tu Mama Tambien. Tough Rudo (Luna)
dreams of playing professional soccer. Goofball Cursi (Bernal), despite a
lack of talent, seeks to be a famous singer, but is tapped to join a
big-time soccer team by a talent scout, leaves for the city and becomes
his team's star scorer. Soon, Beto is selected to play for another soccer
team, and poverty seems a thing of the past. But will their personal
rivalries and inner demons threaten their success? This is the directing
debut of screenwriter Carlos Cuarón (Y Tu Mama Tambien)

***************************

COMING ON OUR SECOND SCREEN:

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (PG) 153min
In the sixth installment of the popular fantasy adventure series, the dark
force of Lord Voldemort is gaining strength in both the Muggle and
wizarding worlds, and Harry thinks it may be lurking in Hogwarts castle
too (what is Draco Malfoy up to, anyway?). But Headmaster Dumbledore is
more concerned with teaching Harry all he knows while trying to unlock the
Dark Lord's defenses. This includes learning a crucial memory of
Professor Slughorn, the new Potions teacher. Meanwhile Harry has been
made captain of the Quidditch team, and love is in the air for Harry and
Ron, while Hermione staunchly refuses to reveal her simmering jealousy.

PUBLIC ENEMIES (R) 143min
Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean), Christian Bale (The Dark Knight)
and Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) have joined acclaimed filmmaker
Michael Mann (The Insider, Last of the Mohicans) to tell the true story of
the legendary Depression era outlaw John Dillinger and his team of
gangsters including Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson. Dillinger
(Depp), the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids and audacious
jailbreaks made him the #1 target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and
its top agent Melvin Purvis (Bale), also became a folk hero for much of
the public who distrusted the banks that had plunged the country into
depression.

[Reel Pizza] update

hi friends

We are coming into a period of a few weeks when our film schedule will not
necessarily follow the Fri-Thurs/Fri-Mon/Tues-Thurs format that we
normally use. So please read carefully and know that when Hollywood's
complicating rush of Wednesday film openings has passed, we will get back
to our regular programming.

This month we have one more Friday night IMPROVISION, our wild and crazy
collaboration between the talented folks from ImprovAcadia and Chris's
bizarre B movie collection, on this Friday 6/19. After July 4th, we will
begin having them on alternate Sunday nights through August. All the fun
starts at 11pm, don't miss out!

Brrr it was cold and raw last week for the Farmer's Market, but the
veggies and flowers stayed fresh and the hot food and coffee hit the spot.
Tomorrow, however, looks much more enticing. Hope to see you 9am - 1pm
Wednesday.

see you all reel soon
-Lisa and Chris

UP (PG) 96min at 5:30 and 7:45
A cranky, older widower (Ed Asner) and balloon salesman attempts to escape
his neighborhood's gentrification and fulfill a lifelong dream by floating
his house away for an adventure, alone, to a remote South American
rainforest, only to discover that a young wilderness explorer has stowed

suspenseful journey to an unexplored world with an unlikely pair of mates.

through Thurs 6/18
PARIS 36 (PG-13) 120min [in FRENCH with subtitles] at 6:00 and 8:30
When the local music hall in a blue-collar neighborhood on the outskirts
of Paris is closed by the fascist landlord, three close friends are put
out of work. One, the recently divorced stagehand, loses custody of his
12 year old son, one is a handsome, radical-activist electrician, and the
third, the concessionaire, dreams of stardom using his talent for doing
impressions. One day these three decide to take hold of their destiny,
occupying the theatre hoping they can produce a hit musical which will
allow them to buy the place and change their lives for the better. The
arrival of a mysterious, beautiful singer turns their relationships
upside-down. This old-fashioned, sentimental and charming melodramatic
musical is from Oscar-nominated director Christophe Barratier (The
Chorus).

Friday June 19 - Tuesday June 23
ANGELS AND DEMONS (PG-13) 138min at 5:30 and 8:15
Director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks return for this sequel to The
DaVinci Code, based on Dan Brown's novel. Hanks again plays symbologist
Robert Langdon who has been summonsed by the church to help solve a murder
mystery at the Vatican. With the help of beautiful, enigmatic Italian
scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), he also discovers the resurgence
of a secret brotherhood with ancient roots, the Illuminati, which will
stop at nothing to advance their goals. These two embark on a non-stop,
action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs and deserted
cathedrals to help the Catholic Church survive.

Friday June 19 - Monday June 22
SUGAR (R) 114min [partly in SPANISH with subtitles] at 6:00 and 8:30*
(*I have one time incorrectly listed in the papers. The second show is at
8:30, (not 8:00.) Thanks for passing this on...)
Miguel Santos is a young Dominican pitcher with extraordinary talent,
struggling to pull his family out of poverty. At age 19 he is chosen to
attend spring training and travels to Arizona where in an instant his
exceptional abilities become merely promising, then on to a small Iowa
town to play on a minor league team. In this Midwestern community he
tries to fit in but in his increasingly competitive world he becomes less
certain and more vulnerable and isolated. This beautiful, intelligent and
observant film, full of humor and empathy from the writing-directing team
of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson), wonderfully evokes the
immigrant experience. Roger Ebert: "the R rating is for relatively
inconsequential reasons."

Tuesday June 23 - Thursday June 25
SIN NOMBRE (NR) 96min [in SPANISH with subtitles] at 6:00 and 8:00
This riveting feature debut film from gifted director Cary Joji Fukunaga,
winner of awards for direction and cinematography in drama at Sundance,
weaves together two stories of people from Central America trying to come
to the US. Before they get near our border, however, these immigrants
must make an equally perilous journey through Mexico riding on the tops of
train cars headed north, avoiding the ruthless gangs from southern Mexico
who rob the travelers. One group is a teenaged Honduran girl with her
father and uncle headed to New Jersey where they have safe haven. Another
is a desperate Mexican teen whose gang life isn't turning out as he had
hoped. When their lives intersect, fateful decisions on both parts link
them together as they travel northward in the hope of new lives and
achieving the American dream.

Wednesday June 24 - Thursday July 2
TRANSFORMERS (PG-13) 147min at 5:30 and 8:30
In the highly-anticipated sequel to the crowd-pleasing film Transformers,

against their sworn enemies, the Decepticons. Michael Bay returns to
direct from a screenplay written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (both
writers for Transformers 1 and Star Trek) and Ehren Kruger (The Ring).

miss it!

Tues June 16 - Thursday June 18
PARIS 36 (PG-13) 120min [in FRENCH with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:30

********************

TULPAN: In this gently absurd, quite funny and gorgeous comedy, a shy
young man, just returned to the vast Kazakh steppe home of his sister from
his military service in the Russian Navy, is trying to woo the only
marriage-age girl for many kilometers with outrageous tales of slaying
giant sea creatures. Only after marrying may he start his own
hardscrabble existence in this desolate land, get his own yurt, and tend
his own flock of sheep. Hiding behind a curtain, the girl says his ears
are too big, but he is undeterred from proving his worth. Cannes winner
of the Prix Un Certain Regard and the first feature from acclaimed
ethnographic documentarian Sergey Dvortsevoy, this crowd-pleasing,
accessible film is full of exquisite nature photography and an observant,
intimate look at a vanishing way of life.

LAND OF THE LOST: Sid and Marty Krofft's classic TV series get a
spectacularly madcap update from director Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket)
and always funny star Will Ferrell, who plays has-been scientist Dr. Rick
Marshall. He has been sucked into a space time vortex and ejected into an
alternative universe full of marauding dinosaurs and other fantastic
creatures. Joining him are his smart assistant Holly (Anna Friel) and a
red-neck survivalist Will (Danny McBride, Tropic Thunder). Can they
brainstorm their way home or are they stuck in this hybrid dimension
forever??

UP: A cranky, older widower and balloon salesman (Ed Asner) attempts to
escape his neighborhood's gentrification and fulfill a lifelong dream by
floating his house away for an adventure, alone, to a remote South
American rainforest, only to discover that a young wilderness explorer has
stowed away on his craft and is coming with him. This latest Pixar
animated film, another great one from the venerated studio and
writer/director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc, writer of Wall-E and Toy
Story.) is a hilarious and suspenseful journey to an unexplored world with
an unlikely pair of mates.

STAR TREK: There is loads of anticipation for this new film, full of
action, comedy and cosmic peril, in the venerable series. Directed by JJ
Adams (Lost, MI:3), this prequel tells the story of the beginnings of the
Starship Enterprise, the most advanced starship ever created.
Thrill-seeking farm boy, James Kirk, and half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock
who was raised in a world devoid of all emotion are bitter rivals but they
must tame their rivalry, making a powerful partnership to lead their crew
through unimaginable dangers as they fight an evil that threatens all
mankind. Live Long and Prosper!

PARIS 36: When the local music hall in a blue-collar neighborhood on the
outskirts of Paris is closed by the fascist landlord, three close friends
are put out of work. One, the recently divorced stagehand, loses custody
of his 12 year old son, one is a handsome, radical-activist electrician,

Friday June 26 - Monday June 29
IS ANYBODY THERE? (PG-13) 92min
Not surprisingly, Michael Caine fully and exceptionally embodies the role
of the Amazing Clarence, a traveling magician slowly slipping into
dementia who has just begrudgingly become a resident of Lark Hill rest
home. Inquisitive 10 year old Edward (Bill Milner, Son of Rambow), the
young son of the proprietors, antagonized by having to give up his room
again, spends his days trying to capture on tape the sound of a soul
leaving a body. These two become kindred spirits in this
semi-autobiographical story from screenwriter Peter Harness and director
John Crowley (Intermission). It's an appealing, satisfying and delightful
small gem of a film.

Tuesday June 30 - Thursday July 2
We have not scheduled a movie here yet, but we most certainly will be open
and showing film. We hope to have something NEW in time for the July 4th
weekend. I will let you know what is happening when things are confirmed.

birth of Manny and Ellie's baby mammoth, Sid finds and steals some eggs,
because he wants a family too. But it gets him into trouble and the gang
has to rescue him from an underground tropical paradise…that is full of
dinosaurs and carnivorous plants that might like to eat them up!

THE HANGOVER (R) 99min
Director Todd Phillips (Old School) has made an outrageous buddy story and
detective yarn, a profanely raunchy comedy that could be the hit of the
summer. The story follows three groomsmen who take their groom on a
bachelor overnight to Vegas before the wedding.
It is twisted, clever, and must-see funny.

[Reel Pizza] update

Good Morning everyone

Lots going on here at Reel Pizza.

The FARMERS MARKET continues on Wednesdays 9am to 1pm. Flowers, cheeses,
seasonal veggies, breakfast snacks and hot soups, seedlings, meats and
more, plus lots of great people. See you here!

On Friday night we will begin our summer late night series with the first
installment of IMPRO-VISION, our collaboration with the wonderful folks at
ImprovAcadia. The show starts at 11pm (have a coffee after dinner!) and
prepare to laugh out loud at the direction they decide to take a cheesy B
movie that Chris has selected just for the occasion. We will have
IMPRO-VISION also on Friday June 12th and Friday June 19th. In July and
August we will be doing them on every other Sunday. We will also soon be
scheduling ROCK'n'REEL, silent films with local bands accompanying, and
PROGRAM-O-RAMA, our audience submission nights.

When you are in town, don't forget to check out WEDN at 1630AM, Bar
Harbor's new low-powered radio station transmitting from the roof of Reel
Pizza. It's range is about 5 miles radius from our building. If you are
interested in programming (think starting in the fall), talk to Chris or
send me an email and we will let you know when we will be getting together
with station master Chuck Begin.

Film
Now playing through Thursday June 4th
FADOS (NR) 88 min [Lyrics in PORTUGUESE with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:00 and
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN (PG) 105min 5:30 and 7:45

BRAND NEW starting Friday
Fri June 5 - 11
LAND OF THE LOST (PG-13) 93min 6:00 and 8:00
Sid and Marty Krofft's classic TV series get a spectacularly madcap update
from director Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket) and always funny star Will
Ferrell, who plays has-been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall. He has been
sucked into a space time vortex and ejected into an alternative universe
full of maurauding dinosaurs and other fantastic creatures. Joining him
are his smart assistant Holly (Anna Friel) and a red-neck survivalist Will
(Danny McBride, Tropic Thunder). Can they brainstorm their way home or
are they stuck in this hybrid dimension forever??

Friday June 5 - Monday June 8
THE WAY WE GET BY (NR) 86min 5:30 and 7:30
We are always delighted to show documentary films by Mainers, this one
directed by Old Town native Aron Gaudet, especially one whose subject is
Mainers. Penobscot county residents 86 year old Bill Knight, 75 year old
Joan Gaudet, and 73 year old Jerry Mundy show the best part of our
collective goodness, as this remarkable film shows how their kindness
transforms their lives. These three determined senior citizens, honorably
and dutifully no matter the hour, have been greeting all our troops as
they pass through Bangor International Airport, the last USA stop on their
way to or first stop when returning from serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
But this award-winning movie is also a deeply moving, compassionate and
inspiring story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality that reminds of
the heartbreak and redemption of our elders so often cast aside in our
youth-honoring culture.

Tuesday June 9 - Thursday June 11
TULPAN (NR) 100min [in KAZAKH and RUSSIAN with subtitles] 5:30 and 7:45
In this gently absurd, quite funny and gorgeous comedy, a shy young man,
just returned to the vast Kazakh steppe home of his sister from his
military service in the Russian Navy, is trying to woo the only
marriage-age girl for many kilometers with outrageous tales of slaying
giant sea creatures.

For planning purposes, please note we will be showing UP from June 12 - 18
and STAR TREK from June 12 - 15. The rest of the schedule will be coming
to you shortly.

See you soon
-Lisa and Chris
