Next IMPROVISION is Sunday August 11 at 11pm.  This is our wacky, occasional collaboration between Chris' B-movies and the talented folks at ImprovAcadia, where we show a movie with no sound that they have never seen before and, in a randomly chosen genre, they make up the dialogue, songs and sound effects on the spot, creating something much funnier than was ever intended originally.  It is a new show every time and always great fun.

Pre-plan for the next SIERRA CLUB SUNDAY MATINEE on Sunday Aug 18th, the show at 2pm will be PLANET OCEAN, a documentary by French director and aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand which will be introduced by staff of COA's marine mammal research group ALLIED WHALE.

Friday July 26 - Thursday August 1

THIS IS THE END (R)  119min  6:00 and  8:30

This audacious, inspired and very funny comedy-adventure is the feature debut from the screenwriting team of Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg (Superbad).  It follows six friends at a party who become trapped in a house after the apocalypse devastates Los Angeles. As the outside world implodes, dwindling supplies and stress threaten to tear apart friendships inside.  Using his own friends as the cast - mostly alums from Judd Apatow’s canon - including Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson and Jay Baruchel, and many cameos, each actor parodies an offbeat version of himself with hilarious results.  Many say it is the funniest movie of the summer…

Friday July 26 - Monday July 29

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY  (G)  102min  5:15 and  7:45

Back by Popular Demand!  Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprise their roles as inseparable monster friends Michael Wazowski and James P. Sullivan from the 2001 Pixar hit film.  They were not always the best of friends, and this prequel tells the story of how these mismatched collegiate monsters, studious Mike and slacker Sully, went from initially not being able to stand each other as freshmen to overcoming their differences, joining forces to save their school and becoming the best of friends.

Tuesday July 30 - Thursday August 1

KON-TIKI  (PG-13)  101min  5:30 and  8:00

An Academy Award nominee for best foreign language film from Norway, this film was also simultaneously shot in English and is the version we’re showing.  This grand, old-fashioned adventure epic recreates the daring, legendary 1947 expedition led by Thor Heyerdahl, a fearless leader who set out to prove his belief that Polynesia was populated by Peruvians traveling west from South America, not by Asians.  Despite being unable to swim, and without sufficient funds or the support of the scientific community, Heyerdahl built a raft using the Inca’s traditional techniques and materials and with six comrades voyaged nearly 5000 miles across the Pacific.

Friday August 2 - Thursday August 8

MUD  (PG-13)  135min   5:30 and  8:15

Matthew McConaughey (Bernie, Magic Mike) continues his string of acclaimed roles in this spellbinding coming-of-age story.  He plays a mysterious fugitive found by two boys who are exploring an island that contains a boat stuck up in a tree from a storm that they think will make a great fort.  Idealistic, romantic teen Ellis (Tye Sheridan) whose parents are divorcing, and his buddy and orphan Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) agree to help him when they discover he is waiting to escape with the love of his life (Reese Witherspoon).  Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) directs this homage to Huckleberry Finn.

Friday August 2 - Monday August 5

WORLD WAR Z  (PG-13)  115min   6:00 and  8:30

Back by Popular Demand!  Brad Pitt stars as a stay-at-home dad and retired UN crisis specialist who is called back when a zombie plague overtakes the world and he is charged with searching for a cure for the infection that is causing them in exchange for the safety of his wife and children.  Traveling from USA to South Korea to Israel to Wales, he desperately tries to overcome one obstacle after another in order to return to his family.  This smart, explosive, and actual pulse-quickening nystery thriller is directed by Marc Forster (The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace).

Tuesday August 6 - Thursday August 8

FRANCES HA  (R)  86min   6:00 and  8:00

In this very smart and funny character study co-written with his leading lady, independent director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot and the Wedding) has made a modern comic fable that explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure and redemption.  Frances (Greta Gerwig, Greenberg, Damsels in Distress) is a dance company apprentice, but at age 27, is unlikely to get permanent employment there.  Her boyfriend is a placeholder, and she’d rather be hanging with her best friend and roommate Sophie (Mickey Sumner).  But when Sophie unexpectedly decides to get an apartment with someone else, Frances’ life becomes a series of diversions to keep from facing her new reality.

Friday August 9 - Thursday August 15

DESPICABLE ME 2  (PG)  98min   5:30 and  7:45

In this BRAND NEW sequel to the popular 2010 hit, again directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, villainous mastermind Gru (Steve Carrell) has become a family man, taking care of his three adopted daughters Margo, Edith, and Agnes, and planning birthday parties and other paternal activities.  His neighbor is also scheming, attempting some matchmaking.  But when his idyllic life is upset by mysterious events, he recognizes the hand of another super-villain to which he must respond, with the help of his minions.

Friday August 9 - Monday August 12

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING  (PG-13)  109min   6:00 and  8:30

Director Joss Whedon followed up his worldwide blockbuster The Avengers with this refreshing adaptation of the classic Shakespeare comedy.  Shot over two weeks with a cast of friends from his TV work (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angels, Firefly) and given a contemporary setting of a weekend party in an affluent LA suburb (he filmed in his own home) the romantic and comical events of the original story remain intact.  Using the Bard’s words, Beatrice and Benedick are sparring lovers in a story where all’s well that ends well.

Tuesday August 13 - Thursday August 15

THE KINGS OF SUMMER  (R)   95min   6:00 and  8:15

This original and whimsical coming-of-age comedy is the feature debut of director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and screenwriter Chris Galletta.  Three teenaged friends decide to spend their summer building and then living in a house in the nearby woods, like men, and far from the reach of their parents.  Their idyllic summer quickly becomes a test of friendship.  Part Stand By Me, part Napolean Dynamite, it is a charming and captivating new film.

COMING SOON:

THE HEAT (R)   117min

Funny women Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock join comedic forces using their goofy chemistry in this impressive buddy-cop comedy.  In director Paul Feig’s follow-up to his hit Bridesmaids, these two women star as socially inept agents, one prim and proper, the other a battering ram, who are forced to work together to catch a ruthless drug lord.  The jokes are brash, coarse, and very funny.  Mayhem ensues.
