[Reel Pizza] SCHEDULE! June 18 - July 8

Hi Everyone

Summer is here!  And, this schedule features lots of popcorn-fun movies to keep you entertained when your day in the park, at the beach or at work is over!  We did try to book a few more art-y films but there weren't yet prints available, so these will have to wait until next schedule.  In the meanwhile, we will relax with some Hollywood fare.  The days the films play are different than usual, because there are a few Wednesday openings we had to work around, so please read carefully.  And although the films are all confirmed, I can't give you all the times at this point, because some of these films are so new, they are not yet rated or have published running times!  At any rate, you will all know the details once I know them.

Also, this schedule runs over the July 4th holiday weekend.  As usual, on the night of the fireworks (scheduled to be Sunday July 4th) we will only screen early shows, which will both be out in plenty of time to walk to the waterfront to watch the fireworks.  We will not have any further films during or after the fireworks.

We look forward to seeing you, perhaps with your company, soon!

-Lisa and Chris, Pierce and Chloe (and Colin, Mark, Julie, Erika, Dakota, Sarah, Jim, Liz, Kelsey, Justine, Bob, Erik, Jake and Bridjit)

THE KARATE KID  (PG)
Popular 12-year old Dre Parker has just had to move with his mom from Detroit to China, where he quickly becomes the enemy of the class bully, a high ranked kung-fu student.  Help arrives in the form of his apartment building's maintenance man (Jackie Chan) who has a secret.  He is a master martial artist and agrees to teach the young man.  But his lesson that to win he must learn maturity and calm makes Dre realize that facing the bullies will be the fight of his life.  This absorbing remake of the 1984 original is directed by Harold Zwart.

Fri 6/11 - Mon 6/14
GREENBERG  (R)  107min    6:00 and 8:15
Filmmaker Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) directs Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder) in his latest intelligent, incisively observed character examination/ romantic comedy.   Perpetually dissatisfied, Roger Greenberg fled LA years ago to NYC and became a carpenter.  After a recent breakdown, he is back on the west coast to recover, staying at his affluent brother's home while they are on vacation.  He's not doing much, although he promised to build a doghouse, and he does try to make a connection with an old friend and bandmate (Rhys Ifans), as well as his old girlfriend (Jennifer Jason Leigh).  But most of his time is spent with his brother's aimlessyoung house assistant (Greta Gerwig) who he alternately is attracted to and repelled by.  As they get to know each other, they find they know themselves a little better too.

Tues 6/15 - Thur 6/17
EVERYONE ELSE  (NR)  119min  [in GERMAN with subtitles]       6:00 and 8:30
This true-to-life, as opposed to generic Hollywood, romantic drama features a relationship that is not always perfect or happily ever after.  Chris, a quiet architect, and Gitti, an out-spoken publicist, are taking a romantic vacation to Sardinia, staying at his parent's villa.  They seem to be much in love, but little things trigger uncomfortable reactions.  Meeting an older, established couple for dinner, (he works with Chris) the differences in the strength of the relationships are apparent to all, as the more successful couple unintentionally destabilizes the younger's relationship.   But as their fears and insecurities are exposed, Chris and Gitti find a second chance to discover themselves and each other.  This second film from German director Maren Ade is authentic, intimate and sweet, yet also fearless, and all-together fascinating.

[Reel Pizza] Update 6/4 - 6/10

hi everyone

Tonight (Thursday) is the last night for SEX & THE CITY 2, at 5:30 and 8:30, and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, at 5:15 and 8:15.

Tomorrow night (Fri) we start our summer Late Night events with an installment of IMPROVISION, our fun collaboration with ImprovAcadia where we choose a cheesy grade B movie from Chris's extensive collection, and the talented comics make up their own dialogue, sound effects and musical score, sometimes even songs when the situation arises!  They have the amazing ability to make the movie on the screen even funnier than it was originally, and definitely funnier than it was ever intended.  Maybe you will be the one to get to spin the Genre Wheel...will they make it be a film noir, a coming-of-age story, a Western?  Every show is different, and you won't know unless you show up!  The fun all gets started at 11pm; you can get in once the earlier show lets out.

Here is the film schedule for this coming week.  We hope to see you soon!
-Lisa and Chris

Fri 6/4 - Thur 6/10     SHREK FOREVER AFTER  (PG)  93min      5:30 and 7:45
Fri 6/4 - Mon 6/7       CITY OF YOUR FINAL DESTINATION (PG-13)  114min    6:00 and 8:30
Tues 6/8 - Thur 6/10    NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PERSIAN CATS  (NR)  101min  [in Farsi with subtitles]     6:00 and 8:15

Fri 6/4 - Thur 6/10
SHREK FOREVER AFTER  (PG)  93min      5:30 and 7:45
Ogre Shrek (Mike Myers) has become a domesticated family man, much to his dismay.  Now instead of scaring villagers, he has reluctantly been reduced to autographing pitchforks.  While longing for the days when he was a real ogre, he is duped by smooth talking Rumpelstiltskin into signing a pact, and he ends up in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king, and Shrek has never even met Fiona (Cameron Diaz).  He must undo all he has done in hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.  Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas return to voice Donkey and Puss-in-Boots.

+++

Fri 6/4 - Mon 6/7
CITY OF YOUR FINAL DESTINATION (PG-13)  114min    6:00 and 8:30
Director James Ivory (Remains of the Day, Room with a View, Howard's End), in his first film since the death of his producing partner Ishmael Merchant, collaborates with his long-time screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and cinematographer Javier Aquirresarobe (The Sea Inside, Talk to Her).  Like his others, his new film, based on Peter Cameron's 2002 novel, is a charming, sophisticated, intelligent, and gorgeous drama.  Omar is a graduate student whose continuing financial aid depends on him getting published; he lied to his committee that the estate of a Latin American author has agreed to let him write a biography; in fact they rejected him.  His girlfriend urges him to travel to Uruguay, unannounced, to plead his case to the family (played by Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney, and Charlotte Gainsbourgh) hoping to change their minds; once there, he becomes entwined into a web of secrets, complicated relationships and unexpected romance.

Tues 6/8 - Thur 6/10
NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PERSIAN CATS  (NR)  101min  [in Farsi with subtitles]     6:00 and 8:15
Kurdish-Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi (A Time for Drunken Horses) secretly filmed this docudrama about music in Iran, based on a screenplay he wrote with his fiancée, journalist Roxana Saberi (who was recently released after a 5 month stint in an Iranian jail for espionage).  In Iran, rock music is against the law, as is singing in English, as well as any single female singing.  This wonderful small movie tells a story of Negara and Ashkar, two young, bohemian artists who want to sing indie-folk-rock and dream of playing in Europe at a festival, but are unable to make the arrangements legitimately.  They connect with Nader, a fast-talking manager who takes them on a revelatory journey through the actual underground music scene of Tehran.  Making this clandestinely filmed story landed the crew in jail twice, and won the Un Certain Regarde Special Jury Prize at Cannes
