[Reel Pizza] Happy New Year update

Welcome to 2016!

The current Lobby exhibit is entitled ARTWAVES EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED ARTIST MEMBER SHOWThere will be an artists' reception on Sunday Jan 10th from 2 - 4 pm to meet the artists, celebrate their art and learn more about the programs created by this organization.  Please come!  ArtWaves is a member-supported community art center located at 329 Main St, with satellite locations at the Bar Harbor Municipal building and at the YWCA on Mount Desert St., offering classes, workshops, collaborative conversations, art shows, and whatever else the members come up with.  In 2016, Artwaves will also be offering two artistic retreats.  Membership runs from April to April for $52 per year; the proceeds directly support their community art endeavors.  All are welcome, as a patron, teacher, student, or artist, or through sharing a talent by facilitating a class, workshop or discussion group.  For more information: artwavesmdi.com.

The first Senior Matinee of the season will be on Thursday January 7th at 1pm with a screening of CREED.  Doors open at 12:30, and we look forward to seeing our Seniors, outer islanders and others who appreciate the afternoon screening.  We will be showing the films this year with open captions.  Let Chris know what you think after the show!

At each of the six screenings of HE NAMED ME MALALA on Jan 5 - 7, representatives of the YWCA will speak before the show starts about their programs supporting young women on MDI and will have information available in the lobby.

Looking forward to another awesome year with you all!

Fri Jan 1 - Thurs Jan 7
CREED  (PG-13)  133min  5:30 & 8:15
This fresh and poignant film brings a new energy to the Rocky story while staying true to its roots.  The team from Fruitvale Station, writer-director Ryan Coogler, co-writer Aaron Covington, and star Michael B Jordan bring the story into the present as Adonis (Jordan), the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa’s one-time opponent and then closest friend, comes to Philadelphia to get boxing coaching.  Rocky, who is now running a restaurant, initially has no interest, but eventually sees in the boy the strength and determination that his father had.  Sylvester Stallone reprises his character and gives one of his best performances in years.  trailer

Fri Jan 1 - Mon Jan 4
THE GOOD DINOSAUR  (PG)  101min  5:00 & 7:15
Pixar’s latest, written by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and directed by Peter Sohn is a visually delightful animation that starts with the premise that the asteroid that took out the dinosaurs on Earth actually missed the planet, and there were no extinctions.  A fearful Apatosaurus (Brontosaurus for us baby-boomers) dinosaur and a young, feral cave-boy take a road trip across a harsh and mysterious landscape when they are unexpectedly washed downstream far from their home.  Arlo the dinosaur learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.  trailer

Tues Jan 5 - Thurs Jan 7
HE NAMED ME MALALA  (PG-13)  88min  6:00 & 8:00
This inspiring documentary from filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) is a moving portrait of young Malala Yousafzai, the articulate Pakistani teen who at age eleven was blogging (anonymously) for the BBC about her life in the Swat Valley, at age fifteen was shot by the Taliban for speaking out on behalf of girl’s education which sparked an international outrage, and at age seventeen was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.  Now she lives with her family in exile in England, continues to heal from her injuries, is preparing to go to college, and speaks to inspire young women around the globe.  trailer
