[Reel Pizza] update June 24 - July 2

hi everyone

Sorry you didn't get an update last week.  Life's a whirl!  Here is the rest of this week, plus next week.  And shortly I will be sending out the next three week schedule that takes us a good way through July.

Please remember that we have many more people in town at this time of year, so  - especially on rainy days - if you want seats to the "popular" films you must be here at 4:30 to get tickets to both the early or late shows.   We can only serve so many, and we do the best we can, but occasionally some people end up being disappointed, which is sad for everyone, and certainly not our intention.  Thanks in advance for understanding our conundrum, and knowing we try our absolute best to do everything we can to provide a quality experience.

Happy Summer!
-Lisa

BRAND NEW!  The most recent film from venerable Pixar Studios tackles the emotions of growing up.  Riley is a mess when she has to move with her family from her comfortable Midwest home to a new life in San Francisco.  And the emotions that guide and advise her – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hadar), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith), who all live in the control center of her mind - are also in turmoil, conflicting on how best to navigate a new town, home and school. Early word is this Pete Doctor-written and directed animation (Up) is one of Pixar's very best, inventive, magical, touching and very funny.  trailer

Aspiring, but not yet successful young writer Brian (Anton Yelchin, Star Trek) has a chance encounter on the streets of Manhattan with a glamorous French woman (Bérénice Marlohe, Skyfall) and falls into a passionate love affair.  It is complicated by the fact that she is married, but her marital relationship is such (apparently it's the French way) that she is available for trysts only between the hours of five and seven in the afternoon.  Soon he becomes involved with the entire family, along with the mistress of the husband.  But he yearns for more than just two hours a day with the woman of his dreams.  This witty romantic comedy is the debut feature of veteran TV director Victor Levin (Mad Men).  trailer

SPY  (R)  120min    6:00 & 8:30
Melissa McCarthy plays an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst who is the unsung hero behind the agency's most dangerous missions.  But when her partner (Jude Law) is felled and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer (Rose Byrne), avenge her partner's death, and prevent global disaster.  Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) has made another outrageously funny, totally entertaining comedy.   trailer

[Reel Pizza] update June 12 - June 18

Ooh yeah, gotta love this summertime weather!  Tonight we start the 8th season of IMPROVISION, our occasional series combining Chris's B movie collection, and the talented comedians of ImprovAcadia.  It's a new show every time, and always lots of late night fun.  Will you get to spin the genre wheel?  You won't if you aren't here at 11pm, tonight.  See you then!

And a reminder about our films for this week, if you missed MAD MAX FURY ROAD when we played it last month or can't wait to see it again, you have another chance this weekend.  It is way more fun that you'd ever expect in a movie, and Charlize Theron rocks it!  Or perhaps if a romance is more up your alley, we have a beautiful new adaptation of Thomas Hardy's FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD starring Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, and Matthias Schoenaert directed by Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg.  And coming for the midweek, a fascinating recreation of a bizarre true story of two liars and the search for the truth in TRUE STORY starring James Franco and Jonah Hill.

Fri June 12  IMPROVISION (NR)  11pm
Fri June 12 - Thurs June 18    FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD  (PG-13)  119min  5:30 & 8:00
Fri June 12 - Mon June 15    MAD MAX: Fury Road  (R)  120min   6:00 & 8:30
Tues June 16 - Thurs June 18    TRUE STORY  (R)  100min  6:00 & 8:15

******************

Fri June 12 - Thurs June 18
FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD  (PG-13)  119min  5:30 & 8:00
This timeless Thomas Hardy story is adapted excellently by Danish filmmaker and Dogme style co-founder Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration, The Hunt).  The outstanding cast includes Carey Mulligan (An Education) as the intelligent, beautiful and headstrong young woman Bathsheba Everdene who attracts three very different suitors, including a gentle sheep farmer (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone), a reckless Sergeant (Tom Sturridge, Pirate Radio) and her older and prosperous but awkward bachelor neighbor (Michael Sheen, Frost/Nixon).  As her fortunes change, so do her choices in love, which has repercussions far more than she anticipated.  This is a beautiful and crowd-pleasing film.  trailer

Fri June 12 - Mon June 15
MAD MAX: Fury Road  (R)  120min   6:00 & 8:30
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!  Director George Miller, the originator of the post-apocalyptic genre and mastermind behind the legendary Mad Max franchise, returns to the world of the Road Warrior, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy, Dark Knight Rises).  Haunted by his turbulent past he believes the best way to survive is to wander alone.  Nevertheless he becomes swept up with a rebel group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by a mysterious woman, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron).  They are escaping from a Warlord from whom something irreplaceable has been taken; he has mobilized all his gangs to pursue the rebels ruthlessly while she is trying to cross the desert to return to her childhood home.    trailer

Tues June 16 - Thurs June 18
TRUE STORY  (R)  100min  6:00 & 8:15
Based on real events as told in the memoir of disgraced former NYTimes columnist Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill), True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa, this film tells a bizarre story that starts with his being fired for fabricating an article.  He is unable to find further employment and his life is a mess, which only gets weirder when he receives a phone call asking for his opinion, as a man (James Franco) just arrested in Mexico, who allegedly murdered his wife and two children, had been using the name and identity of Michael Finkel.  This riveting, unsettling character-driven drama is about two liars, and Finkel's relentless pursuit of the true story.  trailer

[Reel Pizza] schedule June 12 - July 2

Dear friends

Let's do the time warp! Who remembers this ancient scene?!?  It was twenty years ago TODAY that we opened this crazy space, and we love it even more now than we did in 1995 - because back then it was really rather scary! We're over that now, and so incredibly grateful to everyone who's ever watched a movie or eaten here or in any way helped us out from sending a film suggestion to working for us, for giving two broke COA kids a chance to do something a little different, and thus the opportunity to raise our family in one of the best places anywhere. Thank you all so much for two amazing decades. HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE!!

We start the week with our first ImproVision of the season (our 8th!) on Friday June 12th at 11pm.  If you don't know yet, this is our occasional, wacky collaboration with the talented ImprovAcadia crew! With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group of up and coming comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound effects to a cheesy,  grade B movie, THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE! Their talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they were ever anticipated. It's a totally new show every time.  Don't miss out on all the fun!

We also start another season of our monthly summer collaboration with the Downeast Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club, with our first free Sunday Matinee screening of an environmental themed film including discussion after with a knowledgeable speaker.  This month's film, on June 21st at 2pm, will be TIPPING POINT: The End of Oil, about a Native Canadian community and how it has been affected by tar sands oil extraction.

Don't forget to try out our new online ordering system.  You can download an app for Apple or Android, or access the service from our website or facebook page.  You can order in advance or make a joint order with friends while paying separately.  We are running a limited time promotion that will save you 10% off your first online order.  The service is in operation from 4:30 pm to 9pm daily.  Of course you can still call us, or come in and place an order in person.

xo

Coming the week of June 26th?

ALOHA  (PG-13)  105min

Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) has assembled an excellent cast for this charming romantic comedy.  Bradley Cooper is a spiritually lost man recently returned to Hawaii, where he had his greatest career triumphs as a military contractor, to work for a billionaire (Bill Murray) who is trying to negotiate with the locals for permission to use sacred land for a secret project.  He reconnects with his former girlfriend (Rachel McAdams), who is now married, unhappily, with kids, but he also falls for his USAF chaperone (Emma Stone).  trailer

JURASSIC WORLD  (PG-13)  123min

BRAND NEW!  The Jurassic World Theme park set on an island off Costa Rica has been in operation for over a decade, but now admissions are declining and the corporate overlords demand a new exhibit to spark interest.  However, it backfires horribly and has people running for their lives when a genetically engineered Indominus Rex goes on a rampage.  Early word is that this action packed film is a worthy follow-up to Steven Spielberg's original Jurassic Park.  Stars include Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Omar Sy, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Judy Greer.  trailer

SPY  (R)  120min

Melissa McCarthy plays an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst who is the unsung hero behind the agency's most dangerous missions.  But when her partner (Jude Law) is felled and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer (Rose Byrne), avenge her partner's death, and prevent global disaster.  Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) has made another outrageously funny, totally entertaining comedy.   trailer

In an oil scarce world, sacrifices must be made in the pursuit of energy.  But when a tiny Native community living downstream from Canadian tar sands reached out for help, the world heard.  In this award-winning investigative tour de force, the filmmakers' camera takes a shocking and bewildering journey through the politics of oil in the age of the tar sands.  Tar sands oil is already the biggest source of imported oil for the US, and production is set to triple by 2020.  There will be a speaker and discussion after the film.  This free screening is presented by the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club to get people thinking about the environment.  trailer
