Mon Dec 26 - Thurs Dec 29
ARTHUR CHRISTMAS (PG) 97min 5:30 and 7:45
Aardman Animation, the legendary British studio (Wallace and Gromit,
Flushed Away) puts its own unique spin on the family Christmas genre with
this fresh and funny new film. Arthur (James McAvoy) is the black sheep
son of the current Santa (Jim Broadbent) who runs an ultra-high tech
operation out of the North Pole with his other son (Hugh Laurie) to get
all the presents delivered in one night. When things don't go as they
should, it seems up to Arthur to put things right in this clever and
wonderful for the whole family film.

and

TOWER HEIST (PG-13) 105min 6:00 and 8:15
There won't be a Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) version of the Academy Awards,
but we can see his satisfyingly entertaining and funny send-up of the
Bernie Madoff scandal. Alan Alda plays an amazingly successful investment
banker who lives in the luxury penthouse of a ritzy apartment complex
managed by Josh (Ben Stiller). Josh invests the pension fund of all his
employees (including homeless accountant Matthew Broderick, bellhop
Michael Peña, maid Gabourey Sidibe, and concierge Casey Affleck) with his
profitable tenant. When the FBI (agent Tia Leoni) arrests him and it
becomes apparent that the money is *poof* gone just like that, these
losers enlist the help of a local street criminal (Eddie Murphy) to help
them steal it back.

Fri Dec 30 - Thurs Jan 5
THE MUPPETS (PG) 102min 5:30 and 7:45
Gary (Jason Segal), his girlfriend (Amy Adams), and his brother Walter
(Walter the Muppet) take a vacation to Hollywood where Walter can visit
the Muppet Museum (he's a fan). He discovers the Muppet Theater
disheveled, and learns of a nefarious plan by the Tex Richman (Chris
Cooper) to buy the building and raze it so he can drill for oil. This
cannot be! Walter spearheads a fundraising telethon, convincing Kermit
the Frog to reunite his now far-flung buddies, including Miss Piggy,
Fozzie Bear, Animal, Gonzo and others to raise the millions needed to save
the beloved space. True to its roots, this is silly, slapstick, musical,
innocent felted puppet fun.

Fri Dec 30 - Mon Jan 2
J EDGAR (R) 137min 5:45 and 8:30
Leonardo DiCaprio gives a formidable performance as the nation's top
police officer, a former librarian whose career at the top of the FBI
spanned three wars, eight presidential administrations, and over fifty
years, snooping into the private lives of his enemies to keep them in
fear. Director Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black
(Oscar-winner for Milk) ambitiously and with nuance explore the life of
this controversial figure whose private relationships with his domineering
mother (Judi Dench), his fiercely loyal personal secretary (Naomi Watts),
and his deputy and longtime companion Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer) would
have made him a target of his own investigations were he anyone else.
This is an absorbing portrait of a complex man.

Tues Jan 3 - Thurs Jan 5
THE MILL AND THE CROSS (NR) 92min 6:00 and 8:00
This brilliantly complex and fascinatingly multi-layered dreamscape takes
the viewer directly into the Dutch master Pieter Bruegel the Elder's
iconic painting The Way to Calvary. Bruegel set his image of the
crucifixion in 16th century Flanders during the brutal Spanish
Inquisition, with the Spanish soldiers standing in for the Romans, and
Jesus and Mary just two in a crowd of locals. Polish filmmaker Lech
Majewski worked with art historian Michael Francis Gibson in adapting his
book; it is a detailed view of this particular piece, a glimpse into the
everyday life of rural 1564 Flanders, and an examination of this artist's
process, as part of this spectacular film includes Bruegel (Rutger Hauer)
explaining his methods to his financial patron (Michael York). Charlotte
Rampling plays the artist's muse and is the model for Mary.

[Reel Pizza] Dec 26 - Jan19 Schedule

Hi Everyone

Happy Solstice! We have at long last returned from our travels. Utah was
quite fabulous, Cleveland, not so much; Needless to say we are glad to be
home! We have booked a schedule of films to share with you over the next
few weeks, and are getting ready to reopen this coming Monday. Only a few
more days to go. Can't wait to see everyone and get back into the swing.

For those procrastinators who would still like (or need) gift
certificates, I will be around the office all day Thursday 8am-3pm, Friday
morning 9-12ish, and Saturday morning 9-12ish. If you see my Passat wagon
in the parking lot, I am "IN". Come in the side door (Congo Church side)
and up the stairs to find my office; I would be glad to help you out.

We do have a SPECIAL PROGRAM planned for Sunday afternoon January 15th at
1:30pm. As part of the county-wide THE BIG READ 2012, we will host a free
screening the PBS/Ken Burns documentary "Mark Twain." This dynamic and
engaging film fully presents the life and writings of the great American
writer and humorist. The film includes a stunning collection of
photographs and interviews with Hal Holbrook, Arthur Miller, Russell
Banks, and William Styron. A brief discussion will follow the viewing of
the film.

Below is the brief schedule of films, most with times. Following are all
the films' descriptions. We will be booking the last full week Mon for
Fri, so you will get the outstanding title and times in a future email.

Fri Jan 6 - Thurs Jan 12
THE IDES OF MARCH (R) 98min 6:00 and 8:15
This drama of insider politics, with all the backstabbing, betrayals and
intrigue that go along with it, was adapted from the play by Beau
Willimon, who worked on Howard Dean's 2004 campaign. The fourth
directoral effort by George Clooney (Good Night and Good Luck, Confessions
of a Dangerous Mind) is sharp and gripping. Ryan Gosling, in his third
film this year (Drive, Crazy Stupid Love) stars as an ambitious but
idealistic press secretary for a Democratic presidential nominee (Clooney)
in a tight primary race. He gets himself involved in a political scandal
that threatens his candidate's shot at the nomination. Marisa Tomei,
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood co-star.

Fri Jan 6 - Mon Jan 9
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PT1 (PG-13) 117min 5:30 and 8:00
Director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, Dreamgirls) takes the
reins in this visually lush, deeply romantic, occasionally humorous and
finally horrific adaptation of the first half of the final book of
Stephenie Meyers' uber-popular romance series. Human Bella, vampire
Edward and their family must deal with the chain of consequences brought
by their magical wedding, private, tropical honeymoon, and resulting
tumultuous pregnancy, which also brings on unforeseen and shocking
developments for werewolf Jacob.

Tues Jan 10 - Thurs Jan 12
MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE (R) 82min [in French with subtitles] 5:30
and 7:30
In a small French town, Germain (Gerard Depardieu), a nearly illiterate
man considered to be the village idiot by his friends, takes a walk to the
park one day and happens to sit beside Margueritte (Giselle Casadesus) a
little old lady who is feeding his favorite pigeons and reading excerpts
from her novel aloud. Lured by her passion for life and the magic of
literature from which he has always felt excluded, Germain slowly realizes
that he is smarter that he has ever allowed himself to be. Both their
lives are transformed and take off on new journeys. This is a sweet,
small uplifting gem from French director Jean Becker about chance
encounters and how they can unexpectedly change us.

Fri Jan 13 - Mon Jan 16
HUGO (PG) 98min
Martin Scorsese brings his unique vision and winning talents to his first
family film, based on Brian Selznick's Caldecott-winning "The Invention of
Hugo Cabret," sharing with this story a love of and appreciation of the
magic of films at the dawn of moviemaking. Wiley orphan Hugo (Asa
Butterfield) lives in the rafters of a 1930s Paris Metro station, winding
the clocks daily while trying to discover the secrets of a broken machine
left to him by his father. But when he is caught stealing needed parts
from a local toy seller (Ben Kingsley), his quest might be over. Sasha
Baron Cohen, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Lee, and Emily Mortimer co-star.

Tues Jan 17 - Thurs Jan 19
SUMMER PASTURE (NR) 85min [in Tibetan with subtitles]
In the poorest and most remote area of China's Sichuan Province lives a
charming and resilient nomadic family of eastern Tibetan yak herders.
Documentary filmmakers Lynn True, Nelson Walker, and Tsering Perlo have
crafted an accessible and intimate portrait of hardworking Yama, her
illiterate but charming husband Locho, and, following Tibetan Buddhist
tradition, their yet unnamed baby daughter. They continue their
hardscrabble lifestyle while many of their peers have relocated to the
city. This exquisite film chronicles a summer spent in the Zachukha
grasslands while the pressures of modernization create challenges that
threaten to reshape their existence.

Coming on our second screen?

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (PG-13) 128min
Director Guy Richie and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reteam for
another similarly inventive and entertaining foray into Victorian
intrigue. Holmes is in a tizzy because his partner Watson is about to be
married (he cannot imagine why!) Then the Crown Prince of Austria is
found dead; suicide is suspected, but Holmes thinks otherwise, and deduces
that the mastermind is his arch-enemy, the nefarious Professor Moriarty
(Jared Harris). Watson is hijacked from his honeymoon and bedlam ensues.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL (PG-13) 132min
Oscar-winning Pixar director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille)
moves from animation to live-action with this fourth installment in the
high-flying, stunt-filled adventure. Tom Cruise is joined by Simon Pegg
(Shaun of the Dead), Paula Patton (Precious) and Jeremy Renner (Hurt
Locker) as agents for the IMF (Impossible Mission Force). This terrific,
exhilarating thriller unflaggingly sustains amazing visual and dramatic
energy as this team, disenfranchised by the government, works to stop the
Russian bad guy (Michael Nyqvist, original Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) from
blowing up a nuclear bomb on the US and bringing on the apocalypse,
because he can.
