[Reel Pizza] Schedule! Dec 27 - Jan 16

Hi everyone

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back soon and thank you for understanding our need to take a break.  We enjoyed a fabulous trip to Bonaire and enjoyed sights both above and below the surface of the ocean.  Upon our return, we jumped right into installing the new digital projectors that will provide the images on our screens from now on.  These are basically very complicated computers, so we have a bit of a learning curve to master, but for the audience, you should find no change in the Reel Pizza “experience” … except we should never have a scratched print again, and there should be preview trailers for every film!  Happy Winter everyone!  The light is returning!

-C&L

ps Our Senior Winter Matinees will be starting up again on Jan 9th.  I will let you know what we are playing next week.

****************

Fri Dec 27 - Thurs Jan 2

HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE  (PG-13)  146min   5:30 and 8:30

Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) have just returned safely home from winning the 74th Hunger Games, when they have to turn around and go on a victory tour thru all the other districts.  They feel revolution in the air, but are fully aware that the Capitol, run by President Snow (Donald Sutherland), is in total control and preparing for the 75th Games - the Quarter Quell - a competition that could change Panem forever.  trailer

Fri Dec 27 - Mon Dec 30

FROZEN  (PG)  108min   5:00 and 7:30

Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fable The Snow Queen,  Disney’s gorgeous animation celebrates snow and ice in this exuberant musical adventure story of two sisters, a prophesy, and a kingdom trapped in eternal winter.  Princess Anna goes off to find her sister Queen Elsa who flees after she loses control of her magical powers.  With the help of an unemployed ice salesman, his pet reindeer, and a naïve snowman who dreams of summer, Anna and her friends battle the elements to put an end to the icy spell.   In front of the feature is the retro short film GET A HORSE, directed by Lauren MacMullan, the first woman ever to have a solo directing credit on a Disney animation.  trailer

Tues Dec 31 - Thurs Jan 2

THOR  (PG-13)  112min   5:00 and 7:30

The Norse God-Superhero returns to save the Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  Thor embarks on a most perilous journey that will reunite him with the lovely Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to restore order to the cosmos, as vengeful Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) tries to plunge the world into darkness.  Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skarsgård reprise their roles.  Directed by Alan Taylor (Palookaville, TVs Game of Thrones, Mad Men) this is a very funny, action-packed and thoroughly entertaining adventure.  trailer

Fri Jan 3 - Thurs Jan 9

THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG  (PG-13)  161min  5:00 and 8:15

We return to Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth with Hobbit Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and his band of Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) who are on a quest to steal back their rightful treasure and mountain home from the nasty dragon Smaug (voice of Benedict Cumberbach) who stole it.  This is an exciting, fun chapter in the beloved fantasy adventure.  trailer

Fri Jan 3 - Mon Jan 6

LAST VEGAS  (PG-13)  104min   5:30 and 7:45

Four legendary men (Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline) and one phenomenal woman (Mary Steenburgen), Oscar-winners all, join forces in this silly and totally funny story of friendship.  Four childhood pals get together in Las Vegas to celebrate the occasion of the marriage of the group’s sworn bachelor – to a much younger woman, relive their glory days and stop acting their age.  But when they arrive they realize that Sin City isn’t what it used to be, and neither are they.  It still becomes an unforgettable weekend.  trailer

Tues Jan 7 - Thurs Jan 9

WADJDA  (PG)  97min  [in ARABIC with subtitles]  5:30 and 7:45

This totally charming first narrative feature from Saudi Arabia, where movie theaters are outlawed, by a female director, Haifaa al-Mansour, no less, tells the simply subversive tale of a rebellious young girl who wants more than anything to have her own bicycle to ride, so she can race her friend and neighbor, a boy.  Unfortunately for her, girls riding bikes is deemed inappropriate and dangerous to a girl’s virtue in Islamic culture, although she has a plan to raise the money so she can buy the bicycle herself.  Similarly, her mother is chafing at not being allowed to drive, requiring rude chauffeurs to get to and from her job, even though she will not allow her daughter a bike.  And, as she has not produced a male heir, her husband is considering taking a second wife.  trailer

Fri Jan 10 - Mon Jan 13

RUSH  (R) 123min

Ron Howard’s (Frost/Nixon) latest thrillingly recreates the merciless and legendary rivalry between winning Formula 1 racecar drivers, gifted hedonistic British playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) and his disciplined, blunt Austrian opponent Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl, Inglourious Basterds).  This entertaining comic drama from screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Queen) fully captures the exhilaration of the popular circuit’s dramatic 1976 season while being a thought-provoking character study of two very different men both on and off the track.  It recently earned Golden Globe Nominations for Best Drama and Best Supporting Actor (Brühl).   trailer

Tues Jan 14 - Thurs Jan 16

THE SUMMIT  (R)  95min

K-2, the second highest of Earth’s peaks was first conquered in 1954 and is known as Savage Mountain, as one in four climbers does not survive.  On a fateful day in August 2008, nearly two dozen climbers from many countries set out to complete the challenging trek to the summit but one by one, the mountain took half of them.  This complex and absorbing documentary, created by director Nick Ryan and writer Mark Monroe, uses climbers’ first hand footage, seamless reenactments, and after-the-fact interviews to tell the stories of those who returned and those who did not, in particular, the extraordinary Ger McDonnell.  This was the winner of the Best Feature-length Mountain Film at this year’s Banff Film Festival.   trailer

Coming on our second screen:

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS  (PG-13)  134min

Paul Greengrass (Bourne Ultimatum, United 93. Bloody Sunday) gives this taut film, based on true events, an urgency and humanity as he recreates the 2009 hijacking of an American cargo ship off the coast of Somalia using a script written by Billy Ray (Shattered Glass).  Tom Hanks stars as the ship’s captain who is taken hostage after a group of impoverished Somali fishermen (played by first time actors, once Somali refugees now from Minneapolis) manage to board his vessel brandishing automatic weapons.  The relationship of the ship’s Captain to the one English speaking Somali as they engage in an increasingly tense game of cat and mouse is riveting and powerful.  This film, with 4 Golden Globe nominations, is sure to receive some Oscar attention.   trailer

GRAVITY  (PG-13)  91min

Visually amazing and completely entertaining, this breathtaking and thrilling space adventure is masterfully directed by Alfonso Cuarón (HP4, Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien).  Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as astronauts, he is the veteran always with a joke, she is the nervous rookie, working on the Hubble Telescope and what happens after a Russian satellite explodes, sending a stream of debris hurtling their way.  It is amazing cinema.   trailer

[Reel Pizza] update Nov 5th

hi Everyone

Just a quick note to remind everyone that tonight is our annual "eat the
rest of the pizza" closing party. Chris and Colin have assembled some
short films (earlier in the evening are more family friendly, becoming
increasingly bizarre as the night wears on) that will screen on one
side. On the other, video games on the big screen will be happening, as
our kids celebrate their (gulp!) 16th spin around the planet. Food and
drink will flow until all the doughs are gone and kegs are empty.
Festivities start at 6pm and run until Chris and Colin are the only ones
left (way past my bedtime!)

And don't forget to VOTE TODAY.

Hope to see some of you tonight.
-Lisa and Chris
