[Reel Pizza] update

Good Morning Everyone!

First of all, I want to remind everyone that today, Wednesday May 27th, is
the first day of the Bar Harbor Green Market, located in the Reel Pizza
parking lot on Wednesdays from 9am to 1pm. Please stop by and support
Maine-grown farm products. The market will run throughout the summer and
into the fall. Hope to see you!

Also, when you are in town, please check out WEDN, Bar Harbor's newest
radio station at 1630 AM. It is a low power (1/2 Watt) station that has a
range of a 5 mile radius or so from the center of town; the transmitters
are located on the roof of Reel Pizza. It will also be available over the
internet through streaming, but I don't know the details about that yet.
Presently the format is classic mellow rock but over the summer we will be
organizing volunteers who are interested in helping program the station so
if you might be interested, talk to Chris. Sometime soon we will also
have a meet-and-greet to introduce to the community the proprietor of the
station (it isn't us!). Set it as a preset in your car (you can't have
very many AM presets!) and Stay Tuned!

This coming Saturday MAY 30th, we are hosting a benefit for the SPCA of
Hancock County. They will be showing the wonderful family film, BECAUSE
OF WINN DIXIE (PG) at 1:00 (doors open at 12:30) as a fundraiser for the
Trenton shelter. All the ticket proceeds will be used for the care of the
animals in the adoption center. Please come support this worthy cause.

And of course we also have movies. See you soon.
-Lisa and Chris

Now through Thursday May 28th
TERMINATOR SALVATION (PG-13) 6:00 and 8:30
and
SHALL WE KISS? (NR) [in FRENCH with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00

Friday May 29 - Thursday June 4
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN (PG) 105min 5:30 and 7:45
Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, and Steve Coogan reprise their
roles from the first movie and are joined by Amy Adams, Christopher Guest,
Hank Azaria and others as the action moves from NYC's American Museum of
Natural History to Washington DC and the many museums of the Smithsonian
Institution. Larry Daley (Stiller) infiltrates the National Museums in
order to rescue his little friends Jedediah (Wilson) and Octavius (Coogan)
who have been mistakenly shipped to the Smithsonian. Mayhem ensues.

Friday May 29 - Monday June 1
SUNSHINE CLEANING (R) 91min 6:00 and 8:00
A single mom and her slacker sister find an unexpected way to turn their
lives around in this off-beat dramatic comedy. Desperate to get her young
son into a better school, Rose (Amy Adams, Enchantment) convinces her
younger sister (Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada), who still lives at
home with their always scheming Dad (Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine),
into going into business together in the crime scene cleanup business.
This spirited and uplifting film about an average family that finds the
path to its dreams in an unlikely setting, directed by Christine Jeffs
(Sylvia), is heartfelt and totally entertaining.

Tuesday June 2 - Thursday June 4
FADOS (NR) 88 min [Lyrics in PORTUGUESE with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:00
Veteran Spanish director Carlos Saura completes his award-winning musical
trilogy, which includes TANGO and FLAMENCO, with this elegant celebration
of Fado, the haunting, bluesy ballads of the Portuguese working class with
African and Brazilian roots. Saura expands the songs, traditionally only
involving a singer and guitarist, with dance, with other nationalities,
especially former colonies of Portugal, and styles, including hip-hop,
reggae and flamenco. This ravishing, non-purist fusion of cinema, song,
dance and instrument conveys the director's grand vision of music's power
to break down boundaries. This is sadly the final film to be released
from recently closed New Yorker Films, the venerable distributor of
international arthouse films to our cinemas for over 40 years.

[Reel Pizza] update

hi everyone

This update is going to start with some corrections and omissions from the
last email of the full schedule, as well as the schedule of films starting
this week.

First, on Thursday May 21, we will only be showing THE SOLOIST at 6:00.
We will not have a later screening of THE SOLOIST on Thursday; instead at
8:15 we will be showing the brand new TERMINATOR SALVATION (PG-13).
Remember that tickets for any of the evening's shows can be purchased at
the boxoffice when we open at 4:30pm.

Second, I totally forgot to mention that IMPROVISION, our very popular
late night programming that we began last summer is returning! Our first
night of IMPROVISION this year will be Friday June 5th. What is
IMPROVISION you may ask? We have combined forces with the wonderful folks
at IMPROV-ACADIA who bring their talented crew over to Reel Pizza to watch
a wacky movie they know nothing about. After first selecting a random
genre to guide their story, we turn off the sound, start the film, and
they go to work, providing a soundtrack, the dialogue and all the sound
effects for the action, making the film into something much more, and way
funnier than was ever intended originally. We will be featuring
IMPROVISION on June 5th and June 19th to start, and then continue on a
regular basis through July and August and into September. I will get back
to you on the starting time next week. And stay tuned for more late-night
programming coming in the near future.

Third, we will be showing NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN
(PG) starting on Friday May 29th. This is a new booking since we went to
press and was not included on the paper schedule. Feel free to spread the
word!

And finally, next Wednesday May 27th is the opening day of the Bar Harbor
Green Market in the Reel Pizza parking lot. Please check our website
(under special events) for a list of vendors and their wares, and be sure
to join us between 9am and 1pm. See you then!

And, of course, this week's films:

Thursday May 21
EVERLASTING MOMENTS (NR) 5:30 and 8:00
THE SOLOIST (PG-13) 6:00 only
TERMINATOR SALVATION (PG-13) 8:15 only (this showtime for 5/21 only!)

Friday May 22 - Thursday May 28
TERMINATOR SALVATION (PG-13) 115min 6:00 and 8:30
This brand new installment of the popular series stars Christian Bale (The
Dark Knight) as John Connor. Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, he is fated to
lead the surviving human resistance against the final onslaught of the
evil Skynet and its army of Terminators who are trying to destroy mankind.
But the appearance of a stranger, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), whose
last memory is of being on death row, alters his paradigm. Is this
newcomer sent from the future or has he been rescued from the past? As
they infiltrate the heart of Skynet's operations, they uncover a terrible
secret. McG (Charlies Angels) directs.

Friday May 22 - Monday May 25
EARTH (G) 96min 5:30 and 7:45
Combining rare action, unimaginable scale and impossible locations while
capturing the most intimate moments of our planet's wildest and most
elusive creatures, this first film from Disneynature tells the remarkable
stories of three animal families and their amazing journeys across our
planet. The creative team behind the "Planet Earth" series follows polar
bears in the Arctic, elephants in Africa's Kalahari Desert, and humpback
whales in the southern ocean. Additionally the filmmakers encounter other
creatures, caribou, grey wolves, lions, cheetahs, great white sharks,
baboons, and mandarin ducks among others. The spectacular footage
combined with a vital ecological message makes for a provocative,
transfixing film for all.

Tuesday May 26 - Thursday May 28
SHALL WE KISS? (NR) 96min [in FRENCH with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00 Wry,
observant and touching, this discreet French farce in the style of Woody
Allen from director Emmanuel Mouret explores the ramifications from an
innocent kiss. Gabriel and Emilie meet by chance while on a business
trip, and they spend a delightful evening together. Although they both
have significant others at home, they are both attracted to each other.
However at the end of the evening, when Gabriel leans over to give her a
casual kiss goodbye, she declines, saying a kiss always has consequences,
and tells a story of two friends whose one indulgent kiss had significant
and unexpected results.

Starting Friday May 29th - Thursday June 4
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM (PG) show times to be announced.

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend! See you at the movies!

-Lisa and Chris

[Reel Pizza] URGENT update

We have just received some unfortunate news.

Our print of THE SOLOIST is not going to be delivered in time for
tonight's shows, so we are going to have to CANCEL our screenings of the
SOLOIST for tonight (Friday) only.

Instead we will be showing STATE OF PLAY (PG-13) at 6:00 and 8:30.
Tonight's shows of CHE are not affected. Part 1 will start at 5:30 and
Part 2 will start at 8:30. We fully expect to be on screen with THE
SOLOIST tomorrow, Saturday, at 6:00pm and 8:15.

[Reel Pizza] schedule

As promised, here is the new schedule for Reel Pizza. This one runs from
May 22 through June 11th.

First some special notices:

We have lovely new art in our lobby. Come see the paintings of KATRINA
SHAMBARGER. Katrina is a 4 year resident of Southwest Harbor. Previously
living in Ohio, Nebraska, Colorado, France, Wisconsin and Guadeloupe, it
was in Maine that she found her artistic voice. Although she primarily
paints imaginative subjects, the landscape and vivid colors of Maine are
sources of inspiration. Her palette frequently contains teal, the violets
and reds of Maine's granite and shale, as well as the spectrum of color
that exists between the shallow and deep waters of Maine's lakes and
coast. Her grandfather's love and talent for stained glass also inspire
the artist, as many of her works are reminiscent of stained glass windows.
As a jewelry maker, she relishes in the idea of "wearable" art. She
makes pendants with her collages and wire-wrapped sea glass pendants and
earrings with pearls and beads that bobble just like sand and seashells in
the waves on a beach. She can be reached at 207-664-9922 or via her
website kshambarger.etsy.com

And some special programming:
SPCA BENEFIT Saturday May 30
BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE (PG) 106min 1:00pm
As a fundraiser for their Trenton animal shelter, the Hancock County SPCA
is presenting a matinee of this wonderful family-friendly film starring
AnnaSophia Robb, Jeff Daniels, and Cicely Tyson and featuring the music of
Dave Matthews. Based on the award-winning story by Kate DiCamillo this
heartwarming film tells the story of a lonely girl who adopts a stray dog
and how their friendship changes her life. All the ticket proceeds will
be used for the care of the shelter animals and the adoption center. For
more information call 667-8088 or email spca@gwi.net.

And on to films:

Friday May 22 - Thursday May 28
TERMINATOR SALVATION (PG-13) 115min 6:00 and 8:30
Brand new, this new installment of the popular series stars Christian Bale
(The Dark Knight) as John Connor. Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, he is

and tells a story of two friends whose one indulgent kiss had significant

Friday May 29 - Monday June 1
SUNSHINE CLEANING (R) 91min
A single mom and her slacker sister find an unexpected way to turn their
lives around in this off-beat dramatic comedy. Desperate to get her young
son into a better school, Rose (Amy Adams, Enchantment) convinces her
younger sister (Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada), who still lives at

This spirited and uplifting film about an average family that finds the

Tuesday June 2 - Thursday June 4
FADOS (NR) 88min [lyrics in Portuguese with subtitles]
Veteran Spanish director Carlos Saura completes his award-winning musical

to break down boundaries. This is sadly the final film to be released
from recently closed New Yorker Films, the venerable distributor of
international arthouse films to our cinemas for over 40 years.
-------------------

Friday June 5 - Monday June 8
THE WAY WE GET BY (NR) 86min
We are always delighted to show documentary films by Mainers, this one
directed by Old Town native Aron Gaudet, especially one whose subject is
Mainers. Penobscot county residents 86 year old Bill Knight, 75 year old
Joan Gaudet, and 73 year old Jerry Mundy show the best part of our
collective goodness, as this remarkable film shows how their kindness
transforms their lives. These three determined senior citizens have been
honorably and dutifully, no matter the hour, greeting all our troops as
they pass through Bangor International Airport, the last USA stop on their
way to or first stop when returning from serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
But this award-winning movie is also a deeply moving, compassionate and
inspiring story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality that reminds of
the heartbreak and redemption of our elders so often cast aside in our
youth-honoring culture.

Tuesday June 9 - Thursday June 11
TULPAN (NR) 100min [in KAZAKH and RUSSIAN with subtitles]
In this gently absurd, quite funny and gorgeous comedy, a shy young man,
just returned to the vast Kazakh steppe home of his sister from his
military service in the Russian Navy, is trying to woo the only
marriage-age girl for many kilometers with outrageous tales of slaying
giant sea creatures. Only after marrying may he start his own
hardscrabble existence in this desolate land, get his own yurt, and tend
his own flock of sheep. Hiding behind a curtain, the girl says his ears
are too big, but he is undeterred from proving his worth. Cannes winner
of the Prix Un Certain Regard and the first feature from acclaimed
ethnographic documentarian Sergey Dvortsevoy, this crowd-pleasing,
accessible film is full of exquisite nature photography and an observant,
intimate look at a vanishing way of life.
-------------------------

COMING ON OUR SECOND SCREEN:

ANGELS AND DEMONS (PG-13) 138min
Director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks return for this sequel to The
DaVinci Code, based on Dan Brown's novel. Hanks again plays symbologist
Robert Langdon who has been summoned to the Vatican to help solve a murder
mystery at the Vatican with the help of beautiful, enigmatic Italian
scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer). He also discovers the resurgence
of a secret brotherhood with ancient roots, the Illuminati, which will
stop at nothing to advance their goals. These two embark on a non-stop,
action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs and deserted
cathedrals to help the Catholic Church survive.

STAR TREK (PG-13) 126min
There is loads of anticipation for this new film, full of action, comedy
and cosmic peril, in the venerable series. Directed by JJ Adams (Lost,
MI:3), this prequel tells the story of the beginnings of the Starship
Enterprise, the most advanced starship ever created. Thrill-seeking farm
boy, James Kirk, and half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock who was raised in a
world devoid of all emotion are bitter rivals but they must tame their
rivalry, making a powerful partnership to lead their crew through
unimaginable dangers as they fight an evil that threatens all mankind.
Live Long and Prosper!
------------------------

COMING NEXT:

UP (starts Friday June 12th)
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS

[Reel Pizza] update

good morning everyone

These are the films that Reel Pizza will be showing this coming week.
I will be sending out the next schedule shortly; stay tuned! There is
LOTS going on, and more to come!

See you soon
-Lisa and Chris

Friday 5/15 - Thursday 5/21
THE SOLOIST (PG-13) 109min 6:00 and 8:15
This thoughtful and moving film directed by Joe Wright (Atonement) from a
screenplay by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) tells the true story of a
tenuous, unlikely friendship between a newspaper journalist and a
schizophrenic, homeless, street musician. One day, LA Times columnist
Steve Lopez (Robert Downey, jr. Iron Man) discovers Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie
Foxx, Ray) under a statue of Beethoven magnificently playing an old fiddle
with only two strings. When Lopez discovers that this bizarre man was
once a gifted cello student at Julliard whose promising career was
derailed by the voices he hears, he has his story, but their relationship
isn't over. Lopez unsuccessfully tries to set Ayers up in a better living
situation so he can concentrate on music, but Ayers fights this help,
feeling more comfortable on the street.

Friday 5/15 - Monday 5/18
CHE (R) [partly in Spanish with subtitles]
part 1 5:30; part 2 8:30
Steven Soderbergh's absorbing, epic biography stars Benico Del Toro as the
iconic grass-roots, guerrilla revolutionary. Part one, adapted by Peter
Buchman from Che's "Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War," follows
the asthmatic leader and his compatriots including Fidel and Ramon Castro
as they travel to Cuba and successfully overthrow the US-supported Batista
regime. Part two, distilled from Che's Bolivian diaries by Buchman and
Benjamin vander Veen, runs from 1966 to his death in 1967 as Che tries to
repeat his Cuban success in Bolivia but doesn't receive the same reception
from the local people. Separate tickets sold for each part; both parts
will be shown once each evening divided by a ~30min "intermission". You
do not have to watch both parts the same night.

Tuesday 5/19 - Thursday 5/21
EVERLASTING MOMENTS (NR) 131min [in Swedish with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00
This rich, episodic film set a century ago follows the life of a woman
(Maria Heiskanen) who as a young woman wins a camera in a lottery, decides
to keep it, and that decision alters the course of her life. She marries
a dockworker whose alcoholism keeps them poor and makes her life as a
mother to their house full of children difficult. One day she decides to
sell the camera for food money, is persuaded to reconsider by the camera
shop owner, and discovers an artistic outlet she never realized she needed
and a financial independence she never expected. Directed by renowned
Swedish filmmaker Jan Troell (The Emigrant), and based on the life story
of his wife's great aunt, this inspiring film is an extraordinary portrait
of an accidental artist.

[Reel Pizza] update

good morning everyone.

Here is the update of what is happening at Reel Pizza for the week of May
8 - 14. Don't forget about the town-wide yard sale sponsored by the Bar
Harbor Merchant's Association this Saturday morning and we send HAPPY
Mom's day greetings on Sunday to all who qualify. We look forward to
seeing you soon.
-Lisa and Chris

May 8 - 14 STATE OF PLAY (PG-13) 127min 6:00 and 8:30
MAY 8 - 11 HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE (G) 102min 5:30 and 7:45
MAY 12 - 14 SECRET OF THE GRAIN (NR) 151min 5:30 and 8:15

Friday - Thursday
May 8 - 14
STATE OF PLAY (PG-13) 127min
6:00 and 8:30
With an all-star cast, this blistering political thriller from director
Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) finds journalists and
politicians alternately back-scratching and back-stabbing. Ben Affleck is
an up-and-coming Congressman destined to be the party's next presidential
nominee. At least, he is until his assistant, and mistress is murdered.
Robin Wright Penn is his long-suffering wife. Russell Crowe is an
investigative journalist trying to untangle a string of murders. Rachel
McAdams is an ambitious blogger who assisting the investigation, whether
he wants her help or not, and Helen Mirrin is the beleaguered newspaper
editor who needs the story on time and within budget. Written by Tony
Gilroy (Michael Clayton) and Billy Ray (Shattered Glass) based on a BBC
television series, this is an intelligent look into the current state of
print journalism and the power struggle and intrigue of Congress that
doesn't flinch.

Friday - Monday
MAY 8 - 11
HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE (G) 102min
5:30 and 7:45
Miley Cyrus stars as Miley Stewart, a smart, nice, young (brunette)
California teen who leads an alternative life as singing pop-star princess
(blonde) Hannah Montana, like in Disney's TV show. But when Miley begins
to forget her roots and can't seem to shift between her two worlds, her
dad (Miley's real dad Billy Ray Cyrus) sends her home to Tennessee for
some detox. This Beverly Hills girl certainly feels out of place in the
small, home-town, rural community to start, but soon she finds a place to
fit in, with her family, her community, and the cute ranch hand, even as
she must try to avoid a nosy reporter. From director Peter Chelsom
(Funny Bones, Shall We Dance), this is a fun, clean film with some catchy
songs.

Tuesday - Thursday
MAY 12 - 14
SECRET OF THE GRAIN (NR) 151min [in French and Arabic with subtitles]
5:30 and 8:15
This touching and resoundingly humanistic story set in the rustic port of
Sete in southeastern France introduces Slimane who has worked in the same
shipyard job for over 35 years when his growing dissatisfaction prompts
him to try to open his own restaurant. His dream seems unbelievable, but
his contagious conviction and persistence work their way into the hearts
of his loyal but dispersed family; the four children from his first
marriage, his ex-wife, current girlfriend and her bright, outspoken
daughter, Rym (played to great acclaim by the stunning newcomer Hafsia
Herzi). A grand film about ordinary people, this is a deliciously
slow-burning drama about fate, food and family.
