Thurs June 6
IRON MAN 3  (PG-13)   130min  6:00 and 8:30
Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle return in this exciting third episode of the popular franchise.  Ben Kingsley is a menacing, intelligent baddie, and Guy Pearce is a salesman with an intriguing invention that can metabolize new body parts that he hopes to sell to Stark Industries.  Director/screenwriter Shane Black (his debut was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) keeps things light and stuff blows up real good, including Tony Stark’s bachelor pad, as the best popcorn movies ought.  It is a slick and fun movie all around.  Iron Man 3 Trailer

THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES  (R)  140min   5:30 and 8:15
An excellent cast, including Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Bradley Cooper, and Ray Liotta combine with director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) in his second excellent film.  This original, provocative drama powerfully explores the consequences of stunt motorcycle rider Luke’s (Gosling) fateful decision to use crime to support his son.  This act leads him to be the target of a loser college dropout and rookie cop (Cooper).  Their encounter has a devastating impact on both of their families in the years following.  Place Beyond the Pines Trailer

Tues June 4 -  Thurs June 6
BLANCANIEVES  (PG-13)  105min  [Silent with intertitles]  5:30 and 8:00
This stunningly black and white, passionate melodrama merges the legendary Grimm fairy tale with a story of two generations of bullfighters.  A wounded matador whose wife, a flamenco dancer, died in childbirth sends his infant daughter to live with her grandmother; when she passes, the girl comes to live with her father and his new wife, a gold-digging nurse (Maribel Verdu, Y Tu Mama Tambien), who treats the girl as a slave.  One day she runs away with a troupe of dwarves and becomes a legendary matador herself.  This is a sumptuous, imaginative and engrossing silent film from Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger.  Blancanieves Trailer

[Reel Pizza] Schedule May 24 - June 13

Hi Everyone!

Depending on your perspective, this is either the end of spring, or the beginning of summer, take your pick.  In movie land it is definitely the beginning of summer, and we have started showing some new blockbusters because of it.  Rest assured, we will be mixing it up over the next few months, with the super-popular titles sticking around a bit longer than is usual in the winter.  Over the next few weeks, we will be starting our summer specials.  We have the first of a new season of IMPROVISION
- our wacky fun collaboration with ImprovAcadia - on this schedule, on Friday June 7 at 11pm; later in June the free monthly Sunday matinee film and speaker series sponsored by the Downeast branch of the Maine Sierra Club returns for another season.  More on that in a few weeks.

Some reminders:  If you need auditory assistance, we offer free headsets so that you can turn up the volume, using an infra-red transmitter system set up in each theater - Just ask at the concession counter or ticket booth.   If you are a texter, you can get a message with tonight's schedule of films with showtimes by sending a blank text message to times@reelpizza.net.  And finally, keep even more up-to-date with the comings and goings at Reel Pizza by friending us on Facebook HERE.  Remember that our ticket booth opens at 4:30pm daily, or 1/2 hour before showtime if earlier, and we will sell tickets for any of that evening's shows then.

Congratulations to all the area graduates - grade school, high school and college!  We look forward to watching you go out into the world to do great things.

Below is our program from May 24 through June 13.  See you soon.

Fri June 7 -  Mon June 10
THE SAPPHIRES   (PG-13)  103min

From Australia, this based on a true story follows a group of talented Aboriginal girl singers in the late 1960s who earn the opportunity to travel to Vietnam to entertain the US troops and learn about love, friendship and war.  Writer Tony Briggs used the story of his mom and three aunts to create the stage play that became this charming and joyous debut film from new director Wayne Blair.  Facing home-grown racism and romantic troubles too, three sisters who’ve been singing together since childhood enter a talent show run by a broken but kind and scruffy piano player (Chris O’Dowd, Bridesmaids).  He becomes these girls’ manager and encourages them to drop their maudlin country-western songs for exuberant soul and helps them find their first taste of stardom.  Sapphires Trailer

Tues June 11 -  Thurs June 13
RENOIR  (R)  111min  [in FRENCH with subtitles]

This beautiful film from French director Gilles Bourdos is a sumptuous biography of the celebrated Impressionist painter Pierre August (Michel Bouquet) at the end of his life, his war-injured son and future silent filmmaker (The Grand Illusion) Jean (Vincent Rottiers) and the free-spirited, enchanting young model (Christa Theret) that enters both their lives and becomes an important figure for both.  Set on the French Riviera in 1915, her presence rejuvenates the elder Renoir, inspiring him in his final years to create some of his most famous works, and encourages the younger Renoir to explore his passion for the new medium of film.  Convicted, celebrated forger Guy Ribes recreates the famous artwork in this visually splendid film featuring cinematography by Mark Ping Bing Lee (In the Mood for Love).  Renoir Trailer

42
 (PG-13)  128min

Oscar-winning screenwriter Brian Hegeland (LA Confidential, Mystic River) has written and directed a rousing, old-fashioned crowd-pleaser about the integration of major league baseball in 1947.  Harrison Ford stars as the scrappy Brooklyn Dodgers general manager who decides for many reasons that it is time for a black player to come up through the farm system.  He chooses Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) a man who he feels is strong enough to endure the racism that is bound to, and does, occur from both within his team and throughout the league.  42 Trailer

MUD
  (PG-13)  135min

Matthew McConaughey (Bernie, Magic Mike) continues his string of acclaimed roles in this spellbinding coming-of-age story.  He plays a mysterious fugitive found by two boys who are exploring an island that contains a boat stuck up in a tree from a storm that they think will make a great fort.  Idealistic, romantic teen Ellis (Tye Sheridan) whose parents are divorcing, and his buddy and orphan Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) agree to help him when they discover he is waiting to escape with the love of his life (Reese Witherspoon).  Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) directs this homage to Huckleberry Finn.  Mud Trailer
