[Reel Pizza] update Oct 9 - 15

E-Greetings!
We are departing the text for this coming week's film.  Starting Friday 10/9 thru Thursday 10/15 we will be screening the thrilling adventure film EVEREST (PG-13), playing opposite of THE PROPHET (PG) and JIMMY'S HALL (R).  And if you sometimes get your showtimes from our ad in the Mount Desert Islander (or know someone who does), the times listed here in the email are correct; the times in the newspaper's ad were created with some erroneous information and have changed (I want to say I will never trust the internet again!)  We will be showing WALK IN THE WOODS next week, for those who are waiting, and the next schedule of films will be in your inbox by tomorrow.

Here is this coming Holiday week's schedule.  We look forward to seeing you!

EVEREST  (PG-13)  122mi 6:00 & 8:30

Shot in the Himalayas and in Italy's Dolomite range, this harrowing and thrilling adventure is a loose dramatization of the events of the ill-fated 1996 Mount Everest expedition detailed in the non-fiction Into Thin Air by participant and author Jon Krakaurer (Into the Wild).  Jake Gyllenhaal stars as daredevil American guide Rob Hall and Jason Clarke as serious New Zealander guide Scott Fischer, rivals who are leading separate groups of hikers, including a defiant Texan (Josh Brolin) and a postal worker on his second attempt (John Hawkes).  Written by William Nicholson (Gladiator) and Simon Beaufoy (127 Hours) and costarring Emily Watson, Keira Knightly and Robin Wright this stunning film is directed by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur (The Deep).   trailer

Fri Oct 9 - Mon Oct 12
KAHLIL GIBRAN'S THE PROPHET (PG) 85min  5:30 & 7:45
Enchanting and inspirational, this lovely animated adaptation of the classic volume of poetry by the celebrated Lebanese author features the works of an international group of nine award-winning animators, including Nina Paley (Sita Sings the Blues), 2 time Oscar Nominee Thom Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea), and 2 time Oscar Nominee and cartoonist Bill Plympton (Guard Dog), who bring a selection of the poems to life. Directed by R oger Allers (The Lion King), the animated poems are woven through a story of an exiled poet (Liam Neeson), his housekeeper (Salma Hayek) and her free-spirited daughter (Quvenzhané Wallis), with music by Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, and Yo-Yo Ma.  trailer

Tues Oct 13 - Thurs Oct 15
JIMMY'S HALL (PG-13) 106min  5:30 & 8:00
Socio-realist, British director Ken Loach (The Wind that Shakes the Barley, The Angel's Share) has made a rich, gentle, fact-based period drama about the only Irish man ever deported from Ireland. Based on a play by Donal O'Kelly and written by his long-time collaborator Paul Laverty, this is a portrait of Jimmy Gralton, whose sin was to build a dance hall on a rural crossroads, which became a place where people could come to learn, argue, dream, dance and have fun. But the local priest and politicians deem it a den of communism, a threat to the community, and order it shut.  trailer

[Reel Pizza] update Oct 2 - 8

ok, now it kindof feels like fall!  Maybe with that mercifully not too much rain (poor Searsport!), the leaves will change color and not just shrivel up dried in the next few weeks...  Remember we have A/C when it's hot out and Heat when it's cold &/or rainy!  Might be time to bring back the soups!  Here is the schedule that starts today thru next Thursday.  We continue popular THE INTERN for another week, but at different showtimes than last week.  New films include both the highly acclaimed (with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer) PHOENIX, and (also certified Fresh with 95% on the Tomatometer) DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL.  Hope to see you soon. Happy October!  -Lisa

Seizing and opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion startup, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) who is finding herself more and more in over her head with her increasingly successful business. PHOENIX (PG-13) 98min [in GERMAN with subtitles]  6:00 & 8:15
Acclaimed director Christian Petzold (Barbara, Jerichow) has made a spellbinding, haunting, and beautiful mystery of identity, illusion and deception that unfolds against the turmoil of post-WW2 Germany. Based on a French novel "Return from the Ashes" actress Nina Hoss (A Most Wanted Man) stars as Nelly a disfigured Holocaust survivor and former nightclub singer who reluctantly takes a new identity while searching for her husband after the war who may or may not have betrayed her to the Nazis.  trailer

Tues Oct 6 - Thurs Oct 8
THE DIARY OF A TEEN-AGE GIRL (R) 102min  6:00 & 8:15
Captivating, frank, funny, and bracingly honest, this debut film from director Phoebe Gloekner, using the graphic novel by Marielle Heller and starring Kristen Wiig, Alexander Sarsgaard, and Bel Powley, explores the story of a fifteen year old girl's sexual and artistic awakening, and how she survives the consequences of her reckless decisions. She starts by enticing her largely absent mom's boyfriend into an inappropriate and complex relationship, then feels alternatively excited and self-loathing about herself with each subsequent choice, feelings she shares with her diary and with her artistic muse, groundbreaking feminist comic artist Aline Kominsky (Mrs. R. Crumb). "For the girls when they are grown."  trailer
