[Reel Pizza] Update Nov 1 - 4

Hey everyone...

We have come to that bittersweet time of year, especially true this year.  Coming up is our final weekend until Christmas.  Chris and I are looking forward to a few weeks in tropical climes over Thanksgiving, and when we return, we will be making the transition from a 35mm film establishment to a fully Digital projection venue.  We will be retaining our 35mm equipment, but it is likely that most every film you see starting in December when we reopen will be 0s and 1s.  Therefore, this weekend will be the final hurrahs for our trusty and long-serving Simplex Projectors  :-( .  We expect this upgrade will allow us to get our choice of film (maybe sooner?) and at least stay in business (the ultimate goal)!  We will reopen "for the season" Friday Dec 27.

Next Tuesday evening (11/5) we will be showing silly films, playing video games, finishing off the food in the kitchen and celebrating another successful year.....starting around 6pm until Chris and Colin get tired (or everyone else leaves!) If you would like to stop by, we would love to see you.

We are selling gift certificates (any even $$ amount), Big Tickets ($55) and One Shot Passes ($6) for holiday giving.  Colin will be staffing the office while we are away, and I will take over upon our return in early Dec.  Email me or <info@reelpizza.net>, or leave a message on the (207) 288-3828 line or mail a check with your order (to PO Box 625 Bar Harbor 04609), and one or the other of us will take care of you.

For another year, we are sponsors of the ABBE Museum's Native American Film Festival, which this year focuses on the changing representation of Native people in film, specifically as Native writers, actors and directors gain more control over telling their own stories.  The next free screening is Thursday Nov 7 at 7pm at the Abbe, of the film THUNDERHEART, based on actual events on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, as an FBI agent with Sioux background comes to the reservation to help with a murder investigation.  On Thursday December 5th at 7pm the film will be MORE THAN FRYBREAD which showcases Native storytelling in a mockumentary style with an all Native cast and crew about the convening of all 22 recognized AZ tribes for the first ever Arizona Frybread Championship.
he Abbe's annual film series will focus on the changing representation of Native people in film, specifically as Native writers, actors, and directors gain more control over telling their own stories. The second film, Thunderheart, does a better job of capturing difficult Native history and stories from the perspective of Native voice. - See more at: http://www.abbemuseum.org/calendar/november.html#sthash.8qMiINOT.dpuf

IN A WORLD…  (R)  93min  6:00 and 8:15
This hilarious comedy is about a struggling female vocal coach (Lake Bell) trying to make it big in the cutthroat world of movie-trailer voiceovers, only to find herself in direct competition with the industry’s reigning king who is about to retire -- her father (Fred Melamed) -- and his male protégé (Ken Marino).  To top it off, her dad has just kicked her out of the house so his new trophy wife can have more room, so she is sleeping on the couch of her sister and brother-in-law.  And her smitten sound engineer will do anything to help her, and only hopes she notices him.  Lake Bell (It’s Complicated) has written, directed, produced and stars in this refreshing, charming and witty film, and has assembled an excellent supporting cast, including Rob Corddry, Michaela Watkins, Demetri Martin, Cameron Diaz and Geena Davis; she is a fresh new voice on the filmmaking scene.   trailer

INEQUALITY FOR ALL  (PG)  85min  6:00 and 8:00
TUES 10/29 EARLY SHOW BONUS!   We welcome a panel discussion by the Maine Center for Economic Policy after the screening.

Last year (2012) the 400 richest people in America owned half the country’s wealth, more than the bottom 150 million people combined.  The big picture behind the recent economic crisis in the US and its devastating effects on the middle class is the subject of this enlightening documentary which features an engaging and persuasive Robert Reich, former Labor Secretary (under Clinton) who also worked in the Ford and Carter administrations, and now is Professor of Public Policy at UC-Berkeley.  Using footage filmed live during lectures in his popular “Wealth and Poverty” class and while on the speaking circuit (you might have seen him on cable news talk shows or heard him on the radio) as well as interviews with ordinary people of both political affiliations who can barely make ends meet, director Jacob Kornbluth has made an insightful, unflinching look at American income disparity that hasn’t been as wide as it is today since 1928, what that means for our economy, and how we might make it better.    trailer

[Reel Pizza] SCHEDULE Oct 18 - Dec 26

Hi everyone~

SORRY, this task (composing this email) hasn't managed to get onto my brain's to do list...I apologize for its serious tardiness (and my associated scattered-ness).  Tonight is the last night for SHORT TERM 12 at 5:30 and 7:45; Chris says its great if you are able to make time tonight to see it.  Otherwise be sure to put it on your netflix queue.

Please take the time to check out the trailer links included in the email or on the website... with the demise of 35mm film, we are not often able to get trailers to screen before the evening's feature anymore.  This shortcoming will be a thing of the past once we make the transition to digital...but for the next couple of weeks, we will likely be trailer-free at the evening screenings.

I don't know yet what we are playing starting on this coming Friday or next weekend yet; will be back with you tomorrow with an update for at least the next week.

Please notice that, upcoming, in conjunction with our screening of INEQUALITY FOR NOW, we will have a panel of experts provided by the Maine Center for Economic Policy at the early show on Tuesday (opening night 10/29) who will facilitate a question and answer session after the screening.  -L

It’s a bittersweet time, our closing weekend.  Most certainly, we will screen two films over the weekend of Nov 1 - 4, but at press time (and even now two weeks later) we are unable to confirm bookings of our choices (hopefully, but not guaranteed, to be from the films listed below)...So, check our website or our local newspaper ads, “like” us on facebook, or sign up for our email updates and you will be informed timely of “the plan.”  After a quick tropical break, we will return, refreshed and almost ready to bring you all another year.  With mixed emotions, we will make the transition to digital cinema during our break.  We plan to reopen, as usual, in late December, happy to bring film/pixels and camaraderie to our wonderful community.  We wish you all the very best over the upcoming holidays and look forward to spending winter here at home among friends.  xoxo Lisa and Chris

THE WORLD’S END  (R)  109min   6:00 and 8:15

Director Edgar Wright with co-stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost complete their self-described “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” that began with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.  This antic, inspired, irreverent ensemble comedy follows a group of now middle-aged high school friends who are trying to complete a 12 pub crawl that they attempted without success twenty years ago.  Insistently led by arrested adolescent Gary (Pegg), the other four, played by Paddy Consadine, Martin Freeman, Eddy Marsen and Frost, are reluctant participants (one has been sober for years).  But once started, they realize that all is not quite right in their hometown and things get totally silly and nutty, while also remaining touching and wise.  But what does it matter, it’s the beer drinking that’s important!  trailer

Fri Oct 18 - Mon Oct 21

SHORT TERM 12  (R)  96min   5:30 and 7:45

Winner of the Audience Award at both the LA Film Fest and SXSW (where it also won the narrative prize), young director Destin Daniel Cretton proves his storytelling ability and skill in inducing expressive, honest and multi-layered performances from his cast in an funny, insightful and inspiring drama about the risks of caring and being cared for, set in a foster home for at-risk teens.  Brie Larson (Don Jon, The Spectacular Now) is Grace, an optimistic, resilient and compassionate woman who has dedicated her life to helping kids who have slipped through the cracks.  Although she has had a troubled past herself, she now has a wonderful, easygoing boyfriend, Mason (John Gallagher, Jr.), who works with her; but their relationship is about to change.  When a new girl comes to the facility because of dangerous behavior Grace sees a bit of herself and a powerful connection is forged between the two.  This is a credible, gritty and intimate film of the best kind.  trailer

Tues Oct 22 - Thurs Oct 24

POPULAIRE  (R)  111min  [in FRENCH with subtitles]   5:30 and 8:00

This breezy, touching and entertaining French romantic comedy with a delightful retro vibe is set in the by-gone world of competitive speed typing.  Young Rose (Déborah François), the shopkeeper’s daughter, longs for a life beyond the drudgery of a rural housewife.  So she travels to a nearby city where she applies for a secretarial position.  Her interview doesn’t go very well, but the insurance agency boss (Romain Duris) discovers her extraordinarily rapid two finger typing skill and believes she could be a winner at the current craze of speed typing.  He hires her on the condition that she wins the competition, and declares himself her trainer, although his best friend thinks he’s nuts.   It is a fun and frothy amusement with the thrilling tension of a sports movie.   trailer

Zany fun reigns in this nutty, quick-witted and technicolored sequel.  Inventor Flint Lockwood (Bill Hadar, SNL), whose water-powered food-making machine previously left his small island community in ruins before it was destroyed, has now been invited by his idol, Chester V (Will Forte, SNL) to work at his hi-tech company in San Franjose creating technology for the betterment of mankind.  But when he discovers his food machine is still making mischief, in the form of creating food-animal hybrids like Hippotatomi, Flamangoes, Watermelophants, Tacodiles and Shrimpanzees, he and his friends must undertake a dangerous mission to save the world again.  trailer

RUSH  (R)  123min

Ron Howard’s (Frost/Nixon) latest thrillingly recreates the merciless and legendary rivalry between winning Formula 1 racecar drivers, gifted hedonistic British playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) and his disciplined, blunt Austrian opponent Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl, Inglourious Basterds).  This entertaining comic drama from screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Queen) fully captures the exhilaration of the popular circuit’s dramatic 1976 season while being a thought-provoking character study of two very different men both on and off the track.  trailer

DON JON  (R)  90min

Joseph Gordon-Leavitt wrote, directed, and stars in this honest, funny, smart and modern romance.  He is Jersey boy Jon Martello, bartender by day who loves his weekly routine:  Pick up a pretty one night stand at the bar, take her home, and then when she falls asleep, turn on the computer for porn to satisfy his own pleasure.  Come Sunday, he confesses at church, does penance while working out, and then goes to dinner at his parents.  On Monday, start again.  Then he meets Barbara (Scarlett Johnasson) a beauty who he really thinks might be “the one” but she has been raised on Hollywood romance, is looking for her Prince Charming and isn’t going to give up her dreams for just anyone.  Can he be that one?  This is an unexpected treat from a new filmmaker to watch.  trailer
