Fri July 30 -  Thurs Aug 5

CYRUS  (R)  91min   6:00 and 8:30
With a touching and original story that blends humor and heartbreak, incisive writer/director brothers Mark and Jay Duplass (The Puffy Chair) have entered the mainstream.  Their insightful and funny look at love and family in contemporary LA stars John C. Reilly (Walk Hard) as a divorcee who finally after seven years alone meets the woman of his dreams (Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler).  But when she is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond his house, he discovers she has another man in her life, her sneakily meddlesome 21 year-old son (Jonah Hill, Get Him to the Greek) who is moms best friend and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone.  Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love - and it appears only one man can be left standing when it's over.

and

DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS (PG-13)  114min     5:30 and 8:00
Hollywood succeeds well in remaking French director Francis Vebers winning comedy The Dinner Game into a crowd-pleasing hit of its own.  This screwball comedy tells the story of Tim (Judd Apatow regular Paul Rudd), a professional guy on the verge of having it all. The only thing standing between him and total career success is finding the perfect guest to bring to his boss' annual Dinner for Extraordinary People, an event he participates in reluctantly, where the evenings winner brings the most eccentric character. Enter Barry (Steve Carell, Date Night), a loser guy with a passion for dressing mice up in tiny outfits to recreate great works of art. From director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Austin Powers) it is an unforgettable feast about two unlikely friends and one very memorable dinner.

[Reel Pizza] Schedule July 30 - Aug 19

Summer greetings

Here is a rundown of what is going on at Reel Pizza from July 30 - Aug 19th.  First I have two special programs with special guest speakers to tell you about, and we will be offering another edition of ImproVision, and of course, more summer -time movies.  One note is that all the regular films on this schedule will screen for full weeks (Fri - Thurs) and of the three titles that haven't opened yet, at least two will be brand new when they screen at Reel Pizza.  Hope you find something to entice you in to our air-conditioned comfort.

See you soon!

SPECIAL EVENTS
Saturday August 7th
PLANTING HOPE   25min    1:00 and 3:00pm   $5 donation
Learn how one small Surry, Maine-based non-profit organization, Sustainable Harvest International, is alleviating poverty and deforestation in Central America. Planting Hope is a short-documentary that captures life in rural Honduras from the perspectives of SHI field trainer, Juan Carlos, and participant farmer, Don Cheyo as they talk about sustainable farming. SHI's mission is to provide farming families in Central America with the training and tools to preserve tropical forests while overcoming poverty. In Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Belize, they work one-on-one, hands-on, with individual families and communities for a period of typically five years to teach them how to grow crops in a sustainable and organic way that will allow them to access plenty of vegetables and achieve economic stability through the commercialization of cash crops, like cacao and coffee. Planting Hope highlights their work to implement sustainable land-use practices and a Honduran farmer's achievements after working with them.

SHI Founder/President Florence Reed will give a brief overview of this group's work and answer any questions following the documentary.

Sunday August 15th
A SENSE OF WONDER 55min  2pm   free
Rachel Carson's 1963 warnings about the effects of pesticides and herbicides - especially DDT - sparked a revolution in environmental policy and created a new ecological consciousness.   This American Experience documentary, filmed in Maine on location at Carson's cabin, follows this pioneering activist's last year of life when "Silent Spring" was published and she was attacked by the chemical industry and the government, even as she waged her own war against the cancer in her own body.  Using many of Rachel Carson's own words, both humorous and angry, screenwriter and star Kaiulani Lee embodies this extraordinary woman, her love for the natural world and her fight to defend it.

Miss Lee will introduce the film at the screening and take questions afterwards.   The Sierra Club offers this for no charge to get people focused on the environment.

LATE NIGHT FUN
Sunday August 15th   IMPROVISION  11pm
ITS BACK! and Better than ever!  Check out our occasional, wacky collaboration with the talented ImprovAcadia crew!  With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group of up-and-coming comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound effects to a cheesy, grade-B movie, THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE!  Their talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they were ever anticipated.  It's a totally new show every time.   If you haven't seen it yet, now's the time.  Don't miss out on all the fun.

Fri Aug 6 - Thurs Aug12

SALT (PG-13)  100min   5:30 and 8:00
This exciting, stylish and presciently timely action-spy thriller directed by Phillip Noyce (The Quiet American, Patriot Games) stars Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt.  Doing her own stunts in professionally crafted action sequences (not computer-generated), she plays a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor and country, but her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian sleeper spy.  Salt goes on the run, chased by a conservative CIA counterintelligence officer (Chjwetel Ejiofor), using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture.  Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives and her supportive boss (Liev Schreiber) becomes slowly convinced he's been had.  The hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who Is Salt?"

and

THE OTHER GUYS  (PG-13)  107min    6:00 and 8:30
NYC Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) is a meticulous forensic accountant who's more interested in and accurate with paperwork than he'd ever be hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) is a tough guy who has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since an unfortunate run-in with NY Yankee Derek Jeter left a sizable black mark on his permanent record. Gamble and Hoitz idolize the city's top cops, confident, stylish and always successful Highsmith and Danson (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson), but when an opportunity arises for Gamble and Hoitz to prove their mettle, things don't quite go as planned.  Directed by Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights) this buddy police comedy is sure to shine.

[Reel Pizza] update July 23 - 29

Hi Everyone~

Friday night 7/23 is DINE-AROUND DAY for the benefit of the Island Connections.  Reel Pizza will be participating, sending a donation for every pizza made that evening.  If you don't want to eat with us, many other fine establishments are involved.  What a good excuse to not have to cook!

Just putting the finishing touches on the next schedule; look for it in your inbox tomorrow.
See you soon.
-Lisa

Here are the films for this week Fri July 23 - 29.
7/23 - 7/29     INCEPTION (PG-13)   142min   5:30 and 8:30
7/23 - 7/26     CITY ISLAND  (PG-13)  100min  6:00 and 8:15
7/27 - 7/29     PLEASE GIVE (R)  91min   6:00 and 8:00

Fri July 23 - Thurs July 29
INCEPTION (PG-13)   142min   5:30 and 8:30
One of the most anticipated films of the summer, the new film from Christopher Nolan (Memento, Dark Knight) is cloaked in a veil of secrecy.  However, it is known that this sci-fi thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a dream thief whose forte is stealing secrets from deep within the sub-conscious when the mind is most vulnerable.  His success has made him an international fugitive, but one last job could give him his life back.  He must do the reverse, planting an idea into someone's mind.  But the enemy is seemingly able to predict his every move.  Also stars Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine.

Friday July 23 - Mon July 26
CITY ISLAND  (PG-13)  100min  6:00 and 8:15
Every member of this proud, loud and quite dysfunctional Bronx family has at least one big secret. The grown daughter, expelled from college, is working as a pole dancer at a strip.  The teenaged son lives in an internet fantasy world where he obsesses over watching fat women eat. Mom (Julianna Margulies) sneaks cigarettes even though she's adamant she's quit, and is sure her hubby is having an affair, so maybe she'll have one too.  Prison guard Dad (Andy Garcia) says he's playing poker with the guys, but is really taking acting classes (Alan Arkin is the teacher).  Then he brings home an ex-con, who no one except him knows is his illegitimate son he's never met.  This eccentric, lovable film from director Raymond de Felitta is a charming and humanity filled comedy.

Tues July 27 - Thurs July 29
PLEASE GIVE (R)  91min   6:00 and 8:00
Nicole Holofcener (Walking and Talking, Lovely and Amazing) continues her string of excellent films featuring credible female characters with flaws and strengths, speaking sophisticated, believable dialog in this hilarious, heartfelt and original comedy of urban manners.  Catherine Keener stars (as she has in all the director's films) as Kate, a middle-aged New Yorker, who with her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) operates a successful vintage furniture store; their inventory comes from inexpensive estate sales.  Kate feels guilty that she is taking advantage of the bereaved for personal gain.  She is also guilty about the increasing materialism of her teenaged daughter.  And they have already bought the adjacent apartment of the bitter, elderly lady (Ann Guilbert), ready to expand their living space as soon as she dies.  More guilt.  To assuage, Kate invites her neighbor and her two grown granddaughters who take care of her (Amanda Peet and Rebecca Hall) to dinner, with disastrous consequences.

[Reel Pizza] ERROR! thus CHANGE!

hi everyone

I obviously read some erroneous information at some point in the recent past about the running time of THE KARATE KID.  It is not 93min but instead is actually 140min, a significant difference.  We must shift the start time of the second show from 8:00pm to 8:45pm to respond to this discrepancy.  The early show will remain at 6:00.  Again, KARATE KID will screen Fri - Mon at 6:00 and 8:45.  I truly apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  Excuse me while I go do my penance.

[Reel Pizza] update July 16 - 22

hi everyone

here is what's happening at Reel Pizza Fri July 16 - Thurs July 22.

First, please stop by to see the Skateboard decks on display, part of the DeckedOut on MDI fundraiser for the MDI Skatepark Association.  They are up in many places around town and across the island.  The online Auction runs Aug 1 - 10 at www.mdiskatepark.org and the gala event is in Northeast Harbor on the evening of August 12th.  Without a skate park, our local village greens, town parks, parking lots, sidewalks and streets become skateparks. Help keep everyone safe; Help Build A Park!

IMPROVISION returns on Friday evening 7/16 at 11pm.  We are lookign forward to another installment of our occasional, crazy collaboration with the folks at ImprovAcadia where their talents are used to make up, on the spot, a new and improved and intentionally hilarious story and soundtrack to the images of an obscure, cheesy movie from Chris's extensive collection about which they know nothing.  Maybe you will be the one who gets to spin the Wheel O'Styles to determine in which genre the re-imagined film will be: Coming of Age?  Noir?   Western?  Chick Flick?  Don't miss out on all the fun!

We are excited to be opening the new film INCEPTION on July 16rh with a Midnight Show.  Tickets will go on sale at 9pm Thursday evening, once we are done with the regular evening ticket sales.  Early reviews for director Christopher Nolan's followup to The Dark Knight and Memento are quite positive, even as the storyline of the film has been kept quite secretive.  You can be among the first to see it.  Also, note you will have lots of time for additional viewings.  We will be playing INCEPTION for a full two weeks, through July 29th.

We are planning several special programs that will be coming up in August and September, that I will be telling you about very soon.  One I do want to mention now is we are preparing for our second year of MIFF-BY-THE-SEA, a best-of this year's 13th Maine International Film Festival that is going on right now in Waterville at the Railroad Square Cinema ( www.miff.org ).  Our program will be happening over the weekend of September 17 - 20.  Please be in touch with me or Chris or Colin if you might be interested in sponsoring a film or advertising in our program guide so we can give you the details.

See you soon
-Lisa

-Lisa and Chris

Fri 7/9 - Thu 7/15      TOY STORY 3 (G)  103min 5:30 and 8:00
Fri 7/9 - Mon 7/12      GET HIM TO THE GREEK  (R)  109min    6:00 and 8:30
Tue 7/13 - Thu 7/15     THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES  (R)  127min  [in Spanish with subtitles}    6:00 and 8:30

Fri July 9 - Thurs July 15
TOY STORY 3 (G)  103min 5:30 and 8:00
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND
Pixar's debut film, the first Toy Story, brought their excellent animation and storytelling skills to the attention of the public.  Its sequel was even better, and the intervening decade has only improved the reputation of this venerable studio, now a division of Disney.  This new episode in the amazing adventures of Woody, Buzz and the gang is sure to be consistently funny, exciting and moving, as the departure of once young Andy, now off to college, leaves the fate of our favorite toys uncertain.  Directed by Lee Ulrich (co-director of Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2) from a screenplay by Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine), stars Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz), Joan Cusack (Jessie), and Don Rickles (Mr. Potato Head) reprise their voicework.

Fri July 9 - Mon July 12
GET HIM TO THE GREEK  (R)  109min    6:00 and 8:30
Jonah Hill and Russell Brand reunite with their Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller in this crassly funny and fully entertaining comedy about an ambitious assistant to a record company president (Sean Combs nearly steals the show).  The star struck young man has just been granted a dream job to escort a has-been rock legend from London, through New York, to Los Angeles for a concert kicking off a comeback tour.  If only it were that easy…especially as both are getting over broken relationships.  This year's Judd Apatow produced comedy is smart and funny, with likable characters well acted.

Tues July 13 - Thurs July 15
THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES  (R)  127min  [in Spanish with subtitles}    6:00 and 8:30
This year's surprising Oscar Winner from Argentinan director Juan José Campanella, bested a selection of quality films, but it is no less worthy.  This taut thriller, substantially exploring the power of memory to shape and influence both the present and the future, is about an unsolved murder that still, a quarter century later, haunts the original investigator (Ricardo Darin, Nine Queens).  He is trying for closure by writing it as a story.  He takes a draft to his long ago boss (Soledad Villamil), and the story of their unrequited relationship adds romance.  His alcoholic work partner (Argentine comic Guillermo Francella) brings a comic element to this winning film.
