[Reel Pizza] update July 16 - 22

hi everyone

here is what's happening at Reel Pizza Fri July 16 - Thurs July 22.

First, please stop by to see the Skateboard decks on display, part of the DeckedOut on MDI fundraiser for the MDI Skatepark Association.  They are up in many places around town and across the island.  The online Auction runs Aug 1 - 10 at www.mdiskatepark.org and the gala event is in Northeast Harbor on the evening of August 12th.  Without a skate park, our local village greens, town parks, parking lots, sidewalks and streets become skateparks. Help keep everyone safe; Help Build A Park!

IMPROVISION returns on Friday evening 7/16 at 11pm.  We are lookign forward to another installment of our occasional, crazy collaboration with the folks at ImprovAcadia where their talents are used to make up, on the spot, a new and improved and intentionally hilarious story and soundtrack to the images of an obscure, cheesy movie from Chris's extensive collection about which they know nothing.  Maybe you will be the one who gets to spin the Wheel O'Styles to determine in which genre the re-imagined film will be: Coming of Age?  Noir?   Western?  Chick Flick?  Don't miss out on all the fun!

We are excited to be opening the new film INCEPTION on July 16rh with a Midnight Show.  Tickets will go on sale at 9pm Thursday evening, once we are done with the regular evening ticket sales.  Early reviews for director Christopher Nolan's followup to The Dark Knight and Memento are quite positive, even as the storyline of the film has been kept quite secretive.  You can be among the first to see it.  Also, note you will have lots of time for additional viewings.  We will be playing INCEPTION for a full two weeks, through July 29th.

We are planning several special programs that will be coming up in August and September, that I will be telling you about very soon.  One I do want to mention now is we are preparing for our second year of MIFF-BY-THE-SEA, a best-of this year's 13th Maine International Film Festival that is going on right now in Waterville at the Railroad Square Cinema ( www.miff.org ).  Our program will be happening over the weekend of September 17 - 20.  Please be in touch with me or Chris or Colin if you might be interested in sponsoring a film or advertising in our program guide so we can give you the details.

See you soon
-Lisa

One of the most anticipated films of the summer, the new film from Christopher Nolan (Memento, Dark Knight) is cloaked in a veil of secrecy.  However, it is known that this sci-fi thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a dream thief whose forte is stealing secrets from deep within the sub-conscious when the mind is most vulnerable.  His success has made him an international fugitive, but one last job could give him his life back.  He must do the reverse, planting an idea into someones mind.  But the enemy is seemingly able to predict his every move.  Also stars Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine.

Friday July 16 - Mon July 19
THE KARATE KID  (PG)  93min   6:00 and 8:00
Popular 12-year old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) has just had to move with his mom from Detroit to China, where he quickly becomes the enemy of the class bully, a high ranked kung-fu student.  Help arrives in the form of his apartment buildings maintenance man (Jackie Chan) who has a secret.  He is a master martial artist and agrees to teach the young man.  But his lesson that to win he must learn maturity and calm makes Dre realize that facing the bullies will be the fight of his life.  This absorbing remake of the 1984 original is directed by Harold Zwart.

Tues July 20 - Thurs July 22
OCEANS  (G)  74min   6:00 and 8:00
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND
With few words (minimal narration is by actor Pierce Brosnan), symphonic music, and exquisite cinematography using cutting edge underwater photography, filmmakers Jacques Perrin (Winged Migration, Microcosmos) and Jacques Cluzaud present both the bizarre, otherworldly species and common critters that inhabit various niches of the Earths oceans ecosystems for our viewing pleasure.  From the Great Barrier Reef to the Arctic Ocean, to the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, discover a part of the life of a blanket octopus, mobula ray, marine iguana, sea nettle, stonefish, blue whale, walrus, garden eel, spinner dolphin, sea lion, baby sea turtle, penguin, sea urchin larva, horseshoe crab, and much more, all of whose mysterious existences combine to keep life in the balance in the watery realm beneath the waves.  Also included are the unfortunate effects that humans continue to make on this forgiving but fragile habitat.
