[Reel Pizza] Schedule 5/28 - 6/17

Good afternoon all~

As promised, it's the new schedule for Reel Pizza from May 28th - June 17th.  We are moving right along into full summer mode, with some special late night fun (ImproVision is back!), and new blockbuster films to complement our regular program of smaller, quality films.

This is an unusual schedule for us, in that it is all booked, both screens, for the entire three week period.  Therefore, I have included times for every film, and offer the program in brief first, with the details below.  Never fear, I will also send out weekly updates, as a gentle reminder of what is happening here.    Hope you find something that interests you or your company, as this lineup runs from Memorial Day weekend, through Graduation, and right up to the end of school.

Please notice the irregular lineup on Thursday May 27th, due to the early opening of SEX AND THE CITY 2, and the odd start times for some films due to extreme length and scheduling accommodation.  Remember, tickets go on sale at 4:30pm the day of the show.

See you soon!
-Lisa and Chris

Fri 6/4 - Mon 6/7
CITY OF YOUR FINAL DESTINATION (PG-13)  114min    6:00 and 8:30
Director James Ivory (Remains of the Day, Room with a View, Howard's End), in his first film since the death of his producing partner Ishmael Merchant, collaborates with his long-time screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and cinematographer Javier Aquirresarobe (The Sea Inside, Talk to Her).  Like his others, his new film, based on Peter Cameron's 2002 novel, is a charming, sophisticated, intelligent, and gorgeous drama.  Omar is a graduate student whose continuing financial aid depends on him getting published; he lied to his committee that the estate of a Latin American author has agreed to let him write a biography; in fact they rejected him.  His girlfriend urges him to travel to Uruguay, unannounced, to plead his case to the family (played by Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney, and Charlotte Gainsbourgh) hoping to change their minds; once there, he becomes entwined into a web of secrets, complicated relationships and unexpected romance.

Tues 6/8 - Thur 6/10
NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PERSIAN CATS  (NR)  101min  [in Farsi with subtitles]     6:00 and 8:15
Kurdish-Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi (A Time for Drunken Horses) secretly filmed this docudrama about music in Iran, based on a screenplay he wrote with his fiancĂ©e, journalist Roxana Saberi (who was recently released after a 5 month stint in an Iranian jail for espionage).  In Iran, rock music is against the law, as is singing in English, as well as any single female singing.  This wonderful small movie tells a story of Negara and Ashkar, two young, bohemian artists who want to sing indie-folk-rock and dream of playing in Europe at a festival, but are unable to make the arrangements legitimately.  They connect with Nader, a fast-talking manager who takes them on a revelatory journey through the actual underground music scene of Tehran.  Making this clandestinely filmed story landed the crew in jail twice, and won the Un Certain Regarde Special Jury Prize at Cannes

Fri 6/11 - Thur 6/17
PRINCE OF PERSIA: SANDS OF TIME  (PG-13)  116min    5:30 and 8:00
This new family-friendly epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia, based on the video game, is from the producers of Pirates of the Caribbean (based on a theme park ride).  A rogue prince named Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) was once a street kid but long ago was adopted by the king and raised alongside the blood princes.   Ben Kingsley plays his uncle who trains him in his sword skills.  Wrongly accused in the death of the king, Dastan reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Timea gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.   Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) directs.

Fri 6/11 - Thur 6/14
GREENBERG  (R)  107min    6:00 and 8:15
Filmmaker Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) directs Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder) in his latest intelligent, incisively observed character examination/ romantic comedy.   Perpetually dissatisfied, Roger Greenberg fled LA years ago to NYC and became a carpenter.  After a recent breakdown, he is back on the west coast to recover, staying at his affluent brother's home while they are on vacation.  He's not doing much, although he promised to build a doghouse, and he does try to make a connection with an old friend and bandmate (Rhys Ifans), as well as his old girlfriend (Jennifer Jason Leigh).  But most of his time is spent with his brother's aimlessyoung house assistant (Greta Gerwig) who he alternately is attracted to and repelled by.  As they get to know each other, they find they know themselves a little better too.

Tues 6/15 - Thur 6/17
EVERYONE ELSE  (NR)  119min  [in GERMAN with subtitles]       6:00 and 8:30
This true-to-life, as opposed to generic Hollywood, romantic drama features a relationship that is not always perfect or happily ever after.  Chris, a quiet architect, and Gitti, an out-spoken publicist, are taking a romantic vacation to Sardinia, staying at his parent's villa.  They seem to be much in love, but little things trigger uncomfortable reactions.  Meeting an older, established couple for dinner, (he works with Chris) the differences in the strength of the relationships are apparent to all, as the more successful couple unintentionally destabilizes the younger's relationship.   But as their fears and insecurities are exposed, Chris and Gitti find a second chance to discover themselves and each other.  This second film from German director Maren Ade is authentic, intimate and sweet, yet also fearless, and all-together fascinating.

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE  (R)  93min   5:30 and 7:30
The title says it all!  John Cusack, Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry star in this raunchily funny homage to so-bad-they-are-classic 1980's movies.  They play 40-something buddies who are each having trouble with life.  After a particularly bad episode with one of them, they, with one of their grown nephews in tow, decide to recapture the magic of a glorious day they spent 25 years ago at a now decrepit ski resort.  After many drinks, a mysterious incident sets off a chain of events with the hot tub of the title, and these four are sent back to 1986 and must actually relive the day, which is before the nephew is born.  It's politically incorrect, but spot-on hilarious, quite clever and a whole lot of fun.

[Reel Pizza] update May 14 - 20

hi everyone

Crazy weather!  Reel Pizza will be heated when its freezing, and air-conditioned when its sultry.  I am still cold from watching the middle-school track meet yesterday in Ellsworth.  And they are calling for FROST tonight!

First, the town-wide yard sale "Sale'bration" that was rained out last weekend, has been re-scheduled  for this coming Saturday from 9am to 2pm all around town , including in the Reel Pizza parking lot.  Proceeds from the table rentals are going to ISLAND CONNECTIONS.

Second we have SPECIAL PROGRAMMING on Sunday May 16th starting at 1:00 pm, sponsored by the Lamoine and Bar Harbor Conservation Commissions and the Union River Watershed Coalition.   This will include a free screening of the film TAPPED and followed by a panel discussion on bottled water and its impacts moderated by Ken Cline, Environmental Policy and Law Professor at College of the Atlantic. The other panelists include Daphne Loring (Coordinator at the Maine Fair Trade Campaign), Emily Posner (Coordinator for Defending Water for Life in Maine), Lynne Williams (attorney and Green Independent candidate for Maine State Senate), Willem Brutsaert (Environmental Engineer Professor at the University of Maine and expert in groundwater and surface water hydrology), and Nisha Swinton (Maine Organizer for Food & Water Watch).

Third, a sad announcement,  I would have hoped by now to be telling you of the start of the Wednesday morning Farmer's Market.  But I have heard nothing from the organizers, and there's a rumor around town is that it isn't going to happen this year.  I am definitely feeling as disappointed as some of you are sure to be, but I have had no information about the status, so all I can say is it isn't happening yet, and may well not be at all.  SORRY...

We also have films, listed below.  See you soon!
-Lisa

Fri May 14 - Thurs May 20       DATE NIGHT  (PG-13)  88min  5:30 and 7:30
Fri May 14 - Mon May 17 THE RUNAWAYS  (R)  105min  6:00 and 8:15
Tues May 18 - Thurs May 20      MID-AUGUST LUNCH  (NR)  74 min [in ITALIAN w/ subtitles]  6:00 and 8:00

Fri May 14 - Thurs May 20
DATE NIGHT  (PG-13)  88min   5:30 and 7:30
In New York City, a case of mistaken identity turns a bored married couple's attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous.  Claire and Phil Foster (Tina Fey and Steve Carell) are a typical suburban couple whose lives – including their weekly date nights of dinner and a movie – have become routine. To reignite the marital spark, they visit a trendy Manhattan bistro where a case of mistaken identity turns their evening into the ultimate date night-gone-awry.  But as Claire and Phil take their unexpected walk on the wild side, they begin to remember what made them so special together.  The early word (from Variety) on this new action romantic comedy from director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) is that it is "uncommonly engaging" and "hits a home run."

Fri May 14 - Mon May 17
THE RUNAWAYS  (R)  105min    6:00 and 8:15
Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart nail their roles as Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, two of the founding members of the seventies band The Runaways.  Discovered by their manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) who manipulates their image with drill sergeant precision, he turns these rock-obsessed highschool misfits into successful stars by exploiting their youth and sexuality.  Based on Currie's memoir Neon Angel and the feature debut of music video director Floria Sigismondi, this gritty, spirited story of the rise and fall of these teenaged rock-n-roll rebels, and the unlikely friendship that developed between the two main bandmates is authentic with rich, period details.

Tues May 18 - Thurs May 20
MID-AUGUST LUNCH (NR)  74min  [in ITALIAN with subtitles]    6:00 and 8:00
With delectable scenes of food preparation, this delightful and perfectly executed farce follows a middle-aged man who is forced by financial circumstance to spend the biggest summer holiday weekend entertaining his elderly mother and three other feisty mammas.   Starring Italian screenwriter (of the totally different film Gomorrah) and first time director Gianni di Gregorio, working with several first-time senior citizen actresses who are so good it is hard to be sure they are acting and not in a documentary, this warm-hearted tale of good food and unlikely friendship is a vibrant family drama and charming comedy of manners.

[Reel Pizza] update

These temperatures sure make it seem like summer has already arrived!  Remember we feature air-conditioned comfort in both auditoria (is that right?).  This might be the earliest we have turned it on...Glad we can.

We will be hosting part of the town-wide Sale-bration on Saturday morning.  Come sell or come buy!

Here are the films we will be showing this next week.  We will be opening IRON MAN 2 on Friday night.  We will not be doing a midnight screening on Thursday night/Fri morning.  We also expect to be bringing back IRON MAN 2 on May 21st for another week, so it you want to avoid the opening week crush, it is presently scheduled to return then.  Remember we are not equipped, as Ron Weasley's dad did to his car, to magically increase our seating capacity to accommodate all who might want to come to IRON MAN in the first few nights.  Please be understanding of our limitations, know we will be doing our best, and remember we start to sell tickets at 4:30 the day of the show until we are sold out; then we will try to squeeze in a few more as there are seats available.  Also, please note the odd starting times due to extreme length (both short and long) of the two Oscar-nominated films on the other side.

And Happy Mother's Day on Sunday to all the hard-working women out there who raise children.
See you soon--

-Lisa

Full of striking Celtic artistry, this beautifully hand-drawn, colorful, magical adventure was an obscure Irish Production until it became an unexpected but not undeserved Oscar nominee this past winter.  Set in a medieval age of early Christianity, the delightful story follows a young orphan in the care of his uncle the Abbot of Kells (Brendan Gleeson, Mad-Eye Moody from Harry Potter) who is fortifying his abbey against an anticipated Viking attack.  But when an elderly monk arrives with the news that the enemy is headed their way and carries an unfinished illuminated manuscript, the boy is glad to help even as he must enter the forbidden forest where he will find special berries to make ink.  There he meets mythical creatures that help him on his quest, and his dedication lights his way even as he faces down his deepest fears.

A PROPHET  (NR)  149min  [in FRENCH with subtitles]   5:15 and 8:15
This Oscar-nominated and Cannes Grand Prix winning film combines a haunting prison drama, a gripping gangster saga and a powerful personal portrait into an extraordinary entertainment.  Filmmaker Jacques Audiard (Read My Lips, The Beat that My Heart Skipped) has made a bold film that uses crime as a metaphor for power and life.  New actor Tahar Rahim plays a young French-Arab petty crook who enters prison as a nervous, illiterate, and vulnerable kid, and, using his intelligence and attentiveness, is transformed during his lengthy stay into a savvy master criminal and a mob kingpin.  He is taken under the wing of an older Corsican boss (Niels Arestrup, Bourne Ultimatum) who rules the prison, but only if he will attend to some dirty work, otherwise he is a dead man.  Thus begins his education.
