[Reel Pizza] update April 2 - 8

hi everyone

I want you all to know about a new tweak to our website that we made recently.  Often we are frustrated by being unable to get preview trailers on 35mm film for every movie we plan to show, for many different reasons (like with this coming midweek show THAT EVENING SUN...the distributor didn't make any preview trailers at all.)  This limits our ability to promote them to you, especially as we often show films that are not heavily advertised on TV, and many you've never heard of.  Now you can watch trailers for all our coming films from links at our website.  On each individual film's page (reached by selecting the film title) you will notice another link at the bottom of the information "watch the trailer."  Click there to do just that and please spread the word.

Our final Senior Matinee for the winter season will be this coming Thursday April 1st (no fooling!).  We'll be showing THE LAST STATION at 1:30.  We had a great time this year and look forward to having all our seniors back next winter.

Here are the films coming to Reel Pizza Fri April 2 - Thurs April 8.  Happy Easter!

-Lisa and Chris

Tues April 6 - Thurs April 8
THAT EVENING SUN  (R)  105min   6:00 and 8:30

Fri March 26 - Thurs April 1
THE LAST STATION (R)  112min   6:00 and 8:30
Rich, funny and emotional, this historical drama follows two romances a century ago.  First is the nearly 50 year union between iconic Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy (Oscar Nominee Christopher Plummer) and his devoted wife Countess Sofya (Oscar Nominee Helen Mirren).  In the name of a new religion championed by Tolstoy's trusted disciple Chertkov (Paul Giamatti) that espouses poverty, vegetarianism, communal living and celibacy, the cunning acolyte has convinced the old man to change his will giving his estate not to his family, but to the Russian people.  This has ejected some conflict into the long-standing relationship. Tolstoy's worshipful new assistant Bulgakov (James McAvoy) is used by both sides of the property rights battle for information, even as his beliefs are overwhelmed by his feelings for another Tolstoyan (Kerry Condon).  Director Michael Hoffman has made a complex, dynamic, totally entertaining and unmissable film.

Fri March 26 - Mon March 29
PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: The Lightning Thief  (PG)  120min   5:30 and 8:00
Director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter 1 & 2, Mrs. Doubtfire) brings thrilling excitement to this adaptation of the first of Rick Riordans popular mythology-based adventure series, which predates H. Potter by several years.  When dyslexic teen Percy (Logan Lerman) learns his dad is the Greek God Poseidon, and he is a demi-god, he also discovers that Zeus (Sean Bean) has accused him of stealing his lightning bolt.  He is taken to a special school for safety where he learns about his new superpowers.  When Hades (Steve Coogan) kidnaps his mom (Catherine Keener) to the underworld, he and his friends must rescue her and clear his name.

Tues March 30 - Thurs April 1
FISH TANK  (NR)  123min  5:30 and 8:00
Winner of a 2003 Oscar for Short Film, young British director Andrea Arnold has made an excellently crafted and overall superb second feature (following Red Road), that like its predecessor won the Cannes Jury Prize.  Her story of 15 year old Mia (terrific new actress Katie Jarvis), a rough, troubled, and angry girl living in the projects with her hard-partying single mom and her bratty younger sister is realistic yet poetic.  Mia is heading down a bad path, already kicked out of school and spending her time alone practicing dance moves, when Mom brings home a new, handsome boyfriend (Michael Fassbender, Inglourious Basterds) who both unnerves and interests her.  Both the director and her young actress deserve attention.

SPECIAL EVENT Saturday March 20  BENEFIT for Emily Bracale
UNDER OUR SKIN
  (NR)  104min  1:30pm
This dramatic exposé and gripping tale addresses one of the most serious epidemics of our times.  This eye-opening film investigates the untold story of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS.  Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, told that their symptoms are "all in their head." This award-winning documentary is unrated, but serious in content.  It is being shared to raise community awareness about Lyme disease and as a benefit for single Bar Harbor mom Emily Bracale who has been ill with Lyme for several years.  Suggested donation is $10 per person, but no one will be turned away for not contributing.  Also try to stop by COA's Blum Museum to see Emily's associated Art Show before the end of the month.

*********************************************

Fri March 19 - Thurs March 25
SHUTTER ISLAND  (R)  138min    5:30 and 8:15
Martin Scorsese (The Departed) returns with his fourth collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio, a mesmerizing thriller based on Dennis Lehane's (Mystic River) novel.  The story follows two US Marshalls (DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) ho are summoned to a mental hospital for the criminally insane located on a forbidding and remote island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a woman murderer (Emily Mortimer) from her fortress-like cell.  Also part of the excellent cast, Ben Kingsley plays the medical director, with Max von Sydow and Patricia Clarkson playing members of his staff.  Be on the lookout for footage of Acadia's Otter Cliffs, filmed here two years ago.

Fri March 19 - Mon March 22
CREATION (PG-13)    108min   6:00 and 8:30
Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany), world-renowned scientist and dedicated family man, is struggling to accept the death of his young daughter (Martha West) from scarlet fever.  Caught in a battle between faith and reason, he is torn between his love for his deeply religious wife (Jennifer Connelly) and his own growing belief in a world where God has no place.  Based on the biography Annie's Box by Darwin's great-great grandson from compiled letters and diaries, this intelligent, thoughtful and absorbing period drama from director Jon Amiel explores the conflict Darwin finds in his marriage as he continues his writing on The Origin of Species as therapy for his devastation after Annie dies; his challenge continues as he must decide whether or not to publish his surely controversial work.

Tues March 23 - Thurs March 25
NORTH FACE  (NR)  126min  [in German with subtitles]    6:00 and 8:30
Inspired by a true story, this is a slow-burning, fully gripping adventure drama about a Nazi-sponsored competition to climb the then unconquered and infamously dangerous northern face of Switzerland's Eiger Mountain.  Heart-stopping action sequences are interspersed with scenes full of period details.  Two childhood friends Tony and Audi are apathetically serving in the German Army when they are offered this challenging opportunity.  They arrive at the base only to discover an Austrian team prepared to race them to the top.  Berlin's biggest newspaper publisher (Ulrich Tuker, Seraphine) and his editor Luise (Johanna Wokalek), an old friend of the climbers, arrive to chronicle the event, illuminating the dichotomy between the conditions the climbers face versus that of the media in the luxury motel.  Then the promising summer weather turns ugly.

[Reel Pizza] update Mar 12 - 18

hi everyone

We had quite a busy weekend despite the glorious weather, with our successful Acadia Fire Soccer Club benefit screening on Saturday (which I was unable to attend) and our Oscar Night Gala benefiting the Bar Harbor Food Pantry on Sunday.

We had a great time Sunday.  The food, both savory and sweet, was divine, and those who came in costume made the whole event a lot of fun.  CORALINE, UP, JULIE AND JULIA, and THE ROAD were represented in the character costumes (there may be some pictures in this week's MDIslander), and the glamorous fashions on the red carpet were also quite sensational.  Doug McMinimy and Frank Bachman were terrific MC's, even better than Steve and Alec in Hollywood!  After drawing one name from a hat after a three way tie, our grand prize winner was English Jen Galliart with 17 correct answers.  We can fully attest that she does see many, many movies.  And best of all we raised over $1000 for the Food Pantry.  Well Done!

Next weekend, on  Saturday March 20th, we will be hosting a 1:30pm benefit screening of UNDER OUR SKIN.  I hope many of you all will plan come out for that, learn about Lyme's disease, and help out Emily Bracale.

The Senior Matinee on Thursday 3/11 will be VALENTINE'S DAY at 1:30.

Films starting Friday are:
3/12 - 3/18     CRAZY HEART  (R) 6:00 and 8:30   WINNER OF 2 OSCARS for song and lead actor
3/12 - 3/15     THE LOVELY BONES (PG-13)    5:30 and 8:15
3/16 - 3/18     THE MESSENGER  (R)  5:30 and 8:00

See you soon!
-Lisa and Chris

*********************************************

Fri March 12 - Thurs March 18
CRAZY HEART  (R)  111min    6:00 and 8:30
Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) gives the performance of his career as the richly comic, semi-tragic, romantic anti-hero Bad Blake, a broken down, hard-living country singer-songwriter who is shamed by becoming second fiddle to his one time protégé, now a superstar (Colin Farrell).   Blake reaches for salvation through his relationship with an aspiring journalist and single mom (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who discovers the real man behind the boozed out musician, but he might not be strong enough.  First time writer-director Scott Cooper delivers a simple but authentic gem, based on the novel by Thomas Cobb and featuring terrific music mostly by T-Bone Burnett and the late Stephen Bruton.  *THREE OSCAR NOMS: Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Music-Original Song.

Fri March 12 - Mon March 15
THE LOVELY BONES (PG-13)  135min    5:30 and 8:15
Based on Alice Sebold's critically acclaimed and best-selling novel, filmmaker Peter Jackson (LOTR) has made a fantastically beautiful, intelligently complex and memorably suspenseful film.  Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) stars as a teenaged girl in 1973 suburban Philadelphia, murdered by her unsuspected neighbor (Stanley Tucci), who remains in purgatory to watch over her family and try to help them heal their grief from the afterlife, even as her disappearance goes unsolved and her spirit guides advise her to let go.  *ONE OSCAR NOM: Best Supporting Actor.

Tues March 16 - Thurs March 18
THE MESSENGER  (R)  105min    5:30 and 8:00
Screenwriter Oren Moverman (I'm Not There, Married Life) moves into the director's chair in his powerful and tender story about a war hero making his first tentative steps toward a normal life.  Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma) stars as a wounded young veteran whose final three months of duty find him assigned to the Army's Casualty Notification Office, his job to personally notify the next of kin of a loved one's death.  Paired with career officer Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) who is trying to stay on the wagon, Will is challenged by his girlfriend's pending marriage to another, and by the emotion of his work, especially when he is drawn to a war widow (Samantha Morton) whose subdued reaction to the news of her husband's death surprises and fascinates him.  This film is fully textured with humor, anguish and hope.   *TWO OSCAR NOMS: Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay.

[Reel Pizza] update Mar 5 - 11

e-greetings!

Wow, we have a busy first week of March ahead of us with lots going on at Reel Pizza.  Is this what they mean by coming in like a lion?  ROAR!

The Senior matinee on Thursday 3/4 will be THE YOUNG VICTORIA at 1:30pm.

On Saturday 3/6 we will be screening the film VICTORY (PG)  116min  at 2pm as a benefit for the scholarship program of the ACADIA FIRE SOCCER CLUB.  Suggested donation is $5, and the doors will open at 1:30.   Michael Caine, Max von Sydow, Sylvester Stallone and soccer stars Pele and Bobby Moore star in director John Huston's rousing 1981 film about a soccer match between Allied prisoners of war and their German captors.  The Germans plan to use the match as a staged propaganda event, while the prisoners hope to escape during half time.

Sunday 3/7 please be aware our schedule is rearranged because of the Academy Awards.  There will be no regularly scheduled evening shows;  instead we will show our regular films at 2pm matinees only on Sunday afternoon.

At 6:30pm we will open the doors for all the fun of our 8th annual OSCAR NIGHT GALA CELEBRATION, this year benefiting the BAR HARBOR FOOD PANTRY.  Fabulous hors d'oeuvres presented by Sassafrass Catering, Cas Ole and other local chefs, delectable cake from the pastry chef at Poor Boys, complimentary champagne (thanks to Gaylen's Galley), door prizes donated by local businesses, especially for the best costumes both movie character-related and formal wear are all part of the fun.  Mark a ballot of your picks of who should receive awards to be entered to win a Grand Prize... We have screened many of the nominated films this year, so you could be well-informed!   Join hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin and all the Hollywood stars at the Kodak Theatre and Frank Bachman live in person MCing the Ceremony on both screens.  Tickets this year are just $15 per person, and are now available at the Reel Pizza box office or from Food Pantry board members.  They will also be available at the door the night of the event.  This is always a great time and supports a great local cause.  We hope to see many of you here.

And then of course is our regular film program:

Fri March 5 - Thurs March 11
VALENTINE'S DAY  (PG-13)  125min   5:30 and 8:00;  **2pm ONLY on Sunday
This pleasing and light romantic comedy follows the intertwining storylines of a diverse group of Los Angelinos as they navigate their way through love and heartbreak over the course of one Valentine's Day.  Couples and singles experience the pinnacles and pitfalls of finding, keeping or ending relationships in a day in the life of love.  Directed by director Garry Marshall (Princess Diaries) the appealing all-star cast runs the gamut from veteran Shirley MacLaine to singer-songwriter Taylor Swift in her film debut, including also her real life boyfriend Taylor Lautner, both Jessicas Alba and Biel, Kathy Bates, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Julia Roberts and her niece Emma, Queen Latifa, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, George Lopez, Patrick Dempsey and Anne Hathaway.

Fri March 5 - Mon March 8
A SINGLE MAN  (R)  99min   6:00 and 8:15;  **2pm ONLY on Sunday
Colin Firth (Mamma Mia!, Easy Virtue) gives an impressive performance as a closeted gay, British ex-pat, literature professor in 1962 Los Angeles.  He has decided that today will be his last; he can no longer contain the grief over the death in a car crash of his long-time lover (Matthew Goode) many months earlier.  His unremarkable day follows its usual pattern, teach class, run some errands, talk to a neighbor, visit an old friend (Julianna Moore), meet up with a promising student (Nicholas Hoult).  At the day's end, he intends to kill himself.  Based on the landmark Charles Isherwood novel, this first film from fashion designer Tom Ford is thoughtfully restrained, stunningly beautiful and powerful.  *ONE OSCAR NOM: Best Lead Actor.

THE MAID (NR)  94min  [in Spanish with subtitles]   6:00 and 8:15
This comic, humanist drama from young Chilean director Sebastian Silva won two jury prizes at Sundance, for world drama and for the performance of star Catalina Saavedra.  She plays Raquel, a housekeeper who has worked for the Valdez family for the past 23 years, and they consider her a part of their family, even though the relationships are complex.  She is also increasingly plagued by migraines, so Mrs. Valdez hires another domestic to help ease her load over her maid's strenuous objections.  Psychological warfare ensues as she struggles to maintain a hold on the only job she's ever done, and the only family she has.
