[Reel Pizza] update Oct 28 - Nov 3

Hi everyone

This morning I participated in "The Business of Reading" at the Conners
Elementary School in Bar Harbor. Every morning for a week, a business
person visits each classroom and talks about how reading is important to
their work and then reads a story, or a portion thereof, aloud to the
class. Today I read to some great first graders and we talked about the
reading I do to choose movies and about where the ideas for movies come
from.

In this spirit, I want to mention that there are several films opening
this fall that are literary adaptations, so while we are closed, you might
want to visit your local library or bookstore and pick up some reading,
/before/ you see the movie! (I should thank my mother for forwarding me an
email she received from her local bookstore in Clinton, NJ for this list
of titles.)

Including:
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY by John Le Carre
CORIOLANUS by William Shakespeare
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN by Lionel Shriver
THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET by Brian Selznick
THE DESCENDENTS by Kaui Hart Hemmings
THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES by Arthur Conan Doyle (a second film
based on the stories)
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Steig Larsson (the English language
version)
WE BOUGHT A ZOO by Benjamin Mee

This week we have two literary adaptations (although one should be
considered a rather "loose" adaptation!), as well as a special mid-week
film that benefits the MDI Historical Society. See you soon!

[Reel Pizza] Schedule Oct 21 - Nov 7

hello everyone

Here we go, it is the last schedule until Christmas...

We have new, gorgeous Lobby Art by local resident Elizabeth Somers. There
will be two special programs coming up, one a fundraiser for the high
school Gay Straight Alliances of Northern Maine with presentations by
local students as well as a film; the other is a screening of a story of
reconciliation and a moving tribute to veterans (of WW2) in honor of the
upcoming Veteran's Day holiday, presented by Masanobu Ikemiya and several
local Peace organizations. Please join us if you can.

Of course, we encourage you to get Reel Pizza gift certificates or Big
Tickets to give to your friends and family over the holidays. It is
something that they will enjoy, will help them through the long dark
winter, and never expires! Email me at lisa@reelpizza.net, call 288-3828
and leave a message if we aren't here, or send a check with your order to
us at PO Box 625 Bar Harbor ME 04609. We will promptly fulfill your
request with discretion.

Finally, our closing night is Monday November 7th. Chris and I are
leaving town for a couple of weeks to recharge (southern Utah via
Cleveland), but will be returning in early December (Colin will be holding
down the fort while we are away) and we plan to reopen on Monday December
26th at 4:30, like usual "for the season". We thank you one and all for
your support, patronage, suggestions, and kind words over this year, and
we look forward to returning refreshed and ready to spend another winter
here at home with our friends and neighbors, presenting a wide variety of
films both obscure and highly popular, special programming, fundraisers,
Senior matinees and other fun things. We couldn't do this without you!

Fondly,
Lisa and Chris, Pierce and Chloe
Colin, Mark, Liz, Justine, Bob, Bridjit, Jake, Erik, Elizabeth, Rachel,
and Sofia

Art in the Lobby ELIZABETH SOMERS Bar Harbor
Delight in the beauty found in everyday objects drives the selection of
subjects for my paintings. Celebrating the prismatic complexity of color
found in the illuminated surface of a handful of fruit, finding whimsy and
personality in a piece of antique furniture, these are discoveries that
fill me with surprise and inspiration. Oil pastels, by virtue of their
creamy consistency and rich depth of color lend themselves to layering of
colors beautifully, re-working with a brush and solvent or scratching away
color to achieve a sgraffito effect. This combination of techniques allows
me to create images that can glow, vibrate and, hopefully bring the viewer
a feast for the eyes.

Sunday Oct 23 1:00pm
FUNDRAISER MATINEE: OUT IN THE SILENCE (NR)
When you marry, you put an announcement in your hometown paper but if you
are gay, it's not quite so simple. Film makers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer
returned to Joe's small hometown to investigate the hate their wedding
announcement generated. One individual who welcomed them was the mother of
a gay teenager who had to leave the local public school to escape bullying
after he came out. There is conflict and confrontation, but also, in its
way, resolution in this thoughtful film. This showing is a fundraiser to
support high school Gay Straight Alliances in Northern Maine sponsored by
the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network and includes student voice
presentations, an art show by MDI High students, and a live short play by
Sumner students. Come out and support GLSEN in creating a safer community
for all! There will also be a raffle of copies of the movie. $10 for
adults and $2 for students.

Sunday Nov 6 1:30pm free
SPECIAL SCREENING: THE RAILROAD OF LOVE (NR) [in Japanese w/ subtitles]
Highlighting veteran's struggles after war, this wonderful documentary
tells the story of an Australian Catholic priest who led reconciliation
efforts between Australians and Japanese after WWII. Father Tony Glynn
showed unflagging generosity toward those stricken by poverty after the
war and, in the spirit of reconciliation and friendship, supported
Australia-Japan civilian associations towards that end. In depicting
Father Glynn's attempt to reconcile and re-create friendship between
former foes, including various historical footage from the period, this
documentary is a moving account of the history of Father Tony Glynn's work
with the friendship associations from both countries. Masanabu Ikemiya
will introduce the film. There will be representatives from Veterans for
Peace, Pax Christi, and the Peace and Justice Center in Bangor to lead
discussion afterward.

Fri Oct 21 - Thurs Oct 27
MONEYBALL (PG-13) 133min 5:45 and 8:30
This new film, directed by Bennett Miller (Capote) is based on a
best-selling true story by Michael Lewis. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane,
the general manager of the Oakland A's baseball team in the late 1990's
and the guy who assembles the team. He is forced to reinvent his team on
a tight budget and forms an unlikely partnership with Ivy League grad
Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), creating a specialized analytical computer
program to choose bargain players that the scouts call flawed, but all of
whom have an ability to get on base, score runs, and hopefully will win
games. It is a revolution that challenges old school traditions and puts
Beane in the crosshairs of those who say he is tearing out the heart and
soul of the game. Also starring are Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin
Wright.

Fri Oct 21 - Mon Oct 24
DOLPHIN TALE (PG) 113min 5:15 and 7:45
This touching family film is based on an amazing true story. Winter the
dolphin stars as herself in this adaptation of her remarkable and unlikely
life. She is discovered wounded and stranded on a Florida beach one
morning by a lonely, troubled pre-teen. Rescued, she is taken to the
marine aquarium's hospital, but despite their best efforts, her tail
flukes must be amputated. The boy devotes himself to her recovery, which
helps him deal with the injuries suffered by his beloved cousin in the
war. With the help of a prosthetic tail, it is hoped she will learn to
swim again. Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, Harry Connick, jr., and
Morgan Freeman lend their acting talents to this inspirational film.

Tues Oct 25 - Thurs Oct 27
MOZART'S SISTER (NR-PG) 120min [in French with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00
Written, directed and produced by René Féret, this lush historical drama
imagines the teenaged years of Nannerl Mozart, the older sister by five
years of young prodigy Wolfgang, and a gifted musician in her own right.
On the road in 1763, their parents are taking the children touring the
European royal courts, showcasing their talents. With Nannerl approaching
the marriageable age, her father is increasingly discouraging her in her
musical ambitions, succumbing to the gender mores of the times. A
friendship with the children of French monarch Louis XV gives an
opportunity to challenge the social order.

Fri Oct 28 - Mon Nov 7
PUSS IN BOOTS (PG) 90min 5:30 and 7:30
BRAND NEW! Way before Puss (Antonio Banderas) ever met Shrek, our suave
and furry feline friend goes on a swashbuckling ride, as he teams with
mastermind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the tough and
street-savvy Kitty (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose that lays the
Golden Eggs from evil and ugly Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy
Sedaris) trying to save his town. It's a hilarious and courageous
adventure of an unlikely hero, and the true story of a notorious fighter,
lover and outlaw, in boots.

Fri Oct 28 - Mon Oct 31
HIGHER GROUND (R) 109min 6:00 and 8:15
Starring actress Vera Farmiga (Up In the Air) makes an assured directing
debut with this thoughtful, non-judgmental and believable story of a woman
questioning her faith. Inspired by Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark
World, the story spans twenty years in the life of Corinne, from the
development of her belief in the church as a young girl, through its
reinforcement as a young mother and wife living in a conservative
Christian commune, to her struggles with the doubt she faces in middle age
as she aches for a tangible connection to her God, all the while fearing
that in losing her faith she could lose her entire community of friends
and family.

Tues Nov 1 - Thurs Nov 3
DANCING AT THE MILL (NR) 63min 6:00 and 7:45
Made in collaboration with the Mount Desert Island Historical Society to
celebrate this year's 250th anniversary of European settlement on MDI,
this locally made film depicts life on Mount Desert Island from the
mid-1700s through the late 1940s. It begins with Abraham Somes' founding
of the earliest colonial settlement on the island and blossoms into a
presentation of island history, culture, and community. A unique feature
of the film is footage shot by island native Charles Savage from 1927 to
1930. In addition, many early scenes were recreated through digital
technology. You might even recognize some friends and neighbors! The film
was written by Gunnar Hansen, who wrote Mount Desert: An Informal History
and produced by Jeff Dobbs and Bing Miller of Dobbs Productions. A
portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the Mount Desert Island
Historical Society to support its further work.

Fri Nov 4 - Mon Nov 7
PUSS IN BOOTS (PG) 90min 5:30 and 7:30
held over a second weekend

not yet confirmed but expected for
Fri Nov 4 - Mon Nov 7
50/50 (R) 99min 6:00 and 8:15
Inspired by the personal experiences of screenwriter Will Reiser (Da Ali G
Show) , this is an original story about friendship, love, survival and
finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph Gordon-Leavitt (Inception, (500)
Days of Summer) is Adam, a clean-living, twenty something public radio
producer who is diagnosed with a rare bone cancer one day after
complaining to his doc about a sore back. Seth Rogan plays his best
friend who stays true through all the indignities, including radiation,
chemo, hairloss, surgery and more. In real life Rogan is Reiser's best
friend and took the same role. Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) is the
therapist trainee who isn't quite sure how to help her new client.
Angelica Huston is his hovering mom. This film is unorthodox, observant,
honestly poignant, uplifting and very funny, all at the same time.

[Reel Pizza] update Oct 14 - 20

hi everyone

Here is the schedule for the next week at Reel Pizza. It contains the
last episode in 2011 of ImproVision, our wacky collaboration with the
talents of ImprovAcadia on Friday night. They are a very funny crew!
Check it out while you still can.

With last week's frost, we have reached the end of the fresh basil season
(many thanks again to Paul of Happytown Farm) but, sad as this is, it
means the beginning of soup season. Hurrah! Look for some warming
options in the days and weeks ahead.

See you soon!
-Lisa

***************

Fri 10/14 IMPROVISION 11pm
Fri 10/14 - Thurs 10/20 DRIVE (R) 100min 5:30 and 7:45
Fri 10/14 - Mon 10/17 THE FUTURE (R) 92min 6:00 and 8:00
Tues 10/18 - Thurs 10/20 THE NAMES OF LOVE (R) 102min 6:00 and 8:15

****************

Fri Oct 14 - Thurs Oct 20
DRIVE (R) 100min 5:30 and 7:45
Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love) shifts gears again to play Driver, the
main character in this contemporary film noir set on the back streets of
Los Angeles. His days are spent as a stunt man for Hollywood pictures,
while in his evenings he moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals.
His cool is shaken a bit when he meets his pretty new neighbor (Carey
Mulligan) who has a young son and a husband in jail. Albert Brooks and
Ron Perlman are two shades of bad guy that cross Driver's path. This
stylishly suspenseful and entertaining film, based on the pulp novel by
James Sallis, won Nicholas Winding Refn the directing prize at this year's
Cannes Festival.

Fri Oct 14 - Mon Oct 17
THE FUTURE (R) 92min 6:00 and 8:00
Magical, charming and a little strange describes the second film from
performance artist Miranda July (Me, You and Everyone We Know). Blending
whimsy with deep emotion about growing up, she and Hamish Linklater star
as a middle-aged LA couple, Sophie and Jason, somewhat bored with life and
feeling they should add some responsibility. They decide to adopt a stray
cat they find; this cat, Paw-Paw, is ailing and may only have a few months
to live, one of its selling points. When they discover it could live
longer (even though they won't take possession for 30 days) their lives
are thrown into disarray, and they quit their day jobs; she takes on art
projects, he, volunteer activism and their lives change. This is a movie
that will stay with you long after you leave the cinema.

Tues Oct 18 - Thurs Oct 20
NAMES OF LOVE (R) [in FRENCH with subtitles] 102min 6:00 and 8:15
Energetic, young star Sara Forestier won the actress César this year for
her performance in this multi-cultural, star-crossed love story. She
plays free-spirit Baya Benmahmoud, an extroverted liberal who lives by the
old adage, "make love not war" to convert conservative right-wing men to
her left-leaning causes by sleeping with them. Then she meets Arthur
Martin, a middle aged biologist who specializes in avian diseases, but he
is not so easily seduced; this only encourages her further. Michel
Leclerc directs this clever and witty romantic comedy.

**************

Fri Oct 7 - Thurs Oct 13
CONTAGION (PG-13) 106min 5:30 and 8:00
Director Stephen Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich) has made an
engrossing, harrowing medical thriller with a top shelf cast. Gwyneth
Paltrow is Patient Zero, the first to die from an easily spread virus that
starts off innocently with slight cold symptoms that within days morphs
into convulsions and death. Matt Damon is her husband, apparently immune.
Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard. Elliot Gould, and
Jennifer Ehle work on the medical side, trying to figure out what is
happening and how to stop an apparent pandemic. Jude Law is a blogger
selling a homeopathic remedy whose writing does not calm the masses. This
is a intelligent, entertaining disaster movie that might make you a
believer in antibacterial soap.

Fri Oct 7 - Mon Oct 10
MY IDIOT BROTHER (R) 95min 6:00 and 8:15
This big-hearted comedy that is true to life stars Paul Rudd as a too
trusting and generous organic farmer whose best intentions with everyone
always seem to lead to chaos. His main goal in life is to be reunited
with his beloved pet dog, lost in a custody battle with his former
girlfriend. When they break up, he also loses his place to live, so heads
to mom's (Shirley Knight), then to each of his sister's (Zooey Deschanel,
Emily Mortimer, and Elizabeth Banks) each of whom have secrets. As he
causes disarray in one household, he moves on to the next. Director Jesse
Peretz (The Chateau) has made a smart and charming film from an honest and
funny script by his sister Eugenia Peretz.

Tues Oct 11 - Thurs Oct 13
SARAH'S KEY (PG-13) 111min [partly in FRENCH with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:30
In Paris, July 1942, ten-year-old Sarah and her family are targeted by the
occupying Nazis and rounded up and imprisoned by the French police.
Before they are taken away, she locks her little brother in a secret
closet, promising to return to free him. In present-day Paris, American
journalist Julia Jarmond (an excellent Kirsten Scott Thomas) has been
commissioned to write an article about the notorious Velodrome d'Hiver
roundup of French Jews by their countrymen. She soon realizes she and her
husband live in an apartment that his family has owned since that summer
in 1942, one once owned by these deported people. Based on the
best-selling detective story by Tatiana de Rosnay, director Gilles
Paquet-Brenner has made a powerful and absorbing film.
