[Reel Pizza] update June 24 - 30

Happy Solstice! Let's all hope there are plenty of gorgeous summer days
just like this one in our near future!

I apologize that I didn't send out an update last week...hope the
schedule's arrival in your inbox was close enough to be useful. Seems
like plenty of folks liked BRIDESMAIDS this weekend, and starting tonight
we have Werner Herzog's new documentary about a recently discovered French
cave with paintings and artifacts that are 32,000 years old in CAVE OF
FORGOTTEN DREAMS at 6:00 and 8:00. X-MEN FIRST CLASS (PG-13) to which
Chris gives high marks, continues at 5:30 and 8:15. These both run
through Thursday night.

Don't forget that we have another installment of IMPROVISION, our
occasional collaboration with the talented folks at ImprovAcadia at 11pm
this Friday night June 24th. Did you see the article by Nan Lincoln about
it in the Islander?

You can sample, among other things, our fabulous MUSSEL BEACH PARTY pizza
at the Wine and Mussel fest and fundraiser for ANGEL FLIGHT this Saturday
1pm - 4pm at Bar Harbor Cellars at Sweet Pea Farm.

Friday we have the opening of the new PIXAR/Disney animation CARS 2, which
runs for two weeks. We also have GREEN LANTERN, which runs through
TUESDAY, irregularly. On Wednesday we open the new TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF
THE MOON just in time for the big Holiday weekend!

Hope to see you soon!
-Lisa

[Reel Pizza] schedule June 17 - July 7

Guess what day today is? It is Reel Pizza's 16th birthday! Can you
believe it? Seems like only yesterday we were drilling a hole in the side
of our (old) building to install the exhaust fan for the pizza oven
instead of starting our first scheduled show of PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE
DESERT. (We did make our second screening however, and someone who came
in from away said we had a great place and had we ever considered
franchising! We laughed!)

Anyhow, we have come a long way since those early days! As you will
notice, this schedule runs from the first day of summer vacation until
after the 4th of July holiday, so don't be surprised or offended to see a
heavier percentage than normal of commercial shows. Booking film is
definitely an art form and the challenge is increased exponentially when
you don't have total control of what's available.

Also, please remember that on MONDAY JULY 4TH we will close up early,
after the early screenings of both scheduled films, in deference to the
fireworks display. If for some reason the fireworks are canceled, we will
remain closed that evening, but will stay open whenever they are
rescheduled. Let's hope they go off without a hitch!

And we have another installment of IMPROVISION Friday June 24th at 11pm.
Prepare with a restorative nap and/or a late cup'o'joe and join us and
ImprovAcadia for some outrageous fun.

The entire schedule is booked, but times for all the new shows are not yet
available, so we haven't finished with the screentimes. They will come
with the appropriate update.

Thank you ALL for a great 16 years, and here's a toast to at least 16 more!

Sincerely
Lisa and Chris

Friday June 17 - Thursday June 23
X-MEN FIRST CLASS (PG-13) 132min 5:30 and 8:15
This James Bondian prequel to the mutant superhero story unveils the
beginning of the relationship between Professor Charles Xavier (James
McAvoy) and Eric Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender, Jane Eyre) who would
eventually become Xavier's rival, Magneto. They, with Xavier's friend
Raven (Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone) jointly work with the CIA and a
group of other young mutants to bring down the evil Sebastian Shaw (Kevin
Bacon) as the cold war heats up. Director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake,
Kick-Ass) bring fresh style and excitement back to this franchise with an
interesting story, nuanced performances and action-packed sequences.

Friday June 17 - Monday June 20
BRIDESMAIDS (R) 125min 6:00 and 8:30
This female-centric adult comedy stars Kristen Wiig (SNL, Knocked Up) as a
woman whose life is on a downward spiral. Her bakery has just fallen
victim to the recession, her boyfriend isn't really very nice, and now her
oldest, best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is engaged to be married. But
she has asked her to be the maid of honor. Even though she is broke and
lovelorn, she does her best to fulfill her obligations, while worrying
that another bridesmaid, Lillian's fiancé's boss's wife, is trying to take
over her place as Lillian's best friend and most important attendant.
Each event escalates the comedy and the conflict as the big day draws
nearer. This is the last screen role for the late Jill Clayburgh. Judd
Apatow produced, and Paul Feig (co-creator of Freaks and Geeks) directs.

Tuesday June 21 - Thursday June 23
CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS (G) 90min 6:00 and 8:00
In 2D. Intrepid and always fascinating filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly
Man, Encounters at the End of the World, Fitzcarraldo) takes part in an
extraordinary and exclusive expedition into a nearly inaccessible and only
recently discovered cave in southern France, home to some of the most
ancient visual art known to have been created by man. This unforgettable,
beautiful documentary provides a unique glimpse of pristine, sophisticated
artwork, made by humans of the creatures of the forest, including bison,
cave-bears and woolly mammoths, over 30,000 years ago; the cave was
blocked by a rockslide some 20,000 years ago.

Friday June 24 - TUESDAY June 28
GREEN LANTERN (PG-13) 114min 6:00 and 8:30
The centuries-old Green Lantern Corps, a small brotherhood of warriors
with magical rings that grant them superpowers, are sworn to keep peace
and order in the universe. Their latest recruit, Hal Jordan (Ryan
Reynolds), is a gifted pilot, but is also human, and humans have never yet
harnessed the infinite power of the ring before. When a new enemy,
Parallax, threatens to upset the intergalactic balance of power, the fate
of the corps and of Earth rest in the ability of Jordan to overcome his
fears and master the ring. Based on the DC comic book series, this highly
anticipated, action-adventure is directed by Martin Campbell (Casino
Royale, Mask of Zorro).

Friday June 24 - Thursday July 7 (2 weeks)
CARS 2 (G) 113min 5:30 and 8:00
Travel the world with Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the
Cable Guy) in this new Pixar animation. The star streetracer and the
trusty tow truck take their friendship to exciting new places when they
head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix to determine the world's
fastest car. Then Mater, who is meant to be helping his buddy in the
race, gets caught up in his own intriguing adventure, international
espionage, which sends him on an action-packed journey in a top-secret spy
mission. He is trailed by his friends across Europe and Asia and watched
by the whole world. Director John Lasseter (Cars, Toy Story) is joined by
co-director Brad Lewis (producer of Ratatouille) making what is sure to be
a wonderful film for the entire family.

Wednesday June 29 - Thursday July 7
TRANSFORMERS 3: DARK OF THE MOON (PG-13) ??min
The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime again take on the evil Decepticons, who
are determined to avenge their defeat (in the last Transformers movie).

[Reel Pizza] update June 10 - 16

Hi All

Here is the program schedule for Reel Pizza from Friday June 10 through
Thursday June 16. The last full week of spring!

We have special programming on Sunday June 12th at 2pm. It is the first
in a series of four films on environmental issues that we will be
screening this summer, sponsored by the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club.
These films have FREE admission and at each will have featured speakers to
present the films and provide moderated discussion afterward.

The first film in the series is the Oscar-nominated film GASLAND (NR)
107min about the effects of natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
Linda and Robert Godfrey from SAVE PASSAMAQUODDY BAY will introduce the
film and take questions after.

Our regular evening film schedule includes the opening of the new JJ
Adams- directed, Steven Spielberg-produced SUPER 8, (finally) the
adaptation of the bestselling novel WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, and Susanna
Biers' Oscar-winning foreign language film from this year, IN A BETTER
WORLD.

Hope to see you soon!

-Lisa

Fri June 10 - Thurs June 16 SUPER 8 (PG-13) 112min 6:00 and 8:30

Fri June 10 - Mon June 13 WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (PG-13) 115min 5:30 and 8:00

Tues June 14 - Thurs June 16 IN A BETTER WORLD (R) 113min [partly in
Swedish and Danish w/ subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00

**************

Fri June 10 - Thurs June 16
SUPER 8 (PG-13) 112min 6:00 and 8:30
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends (Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney,
Gabriel Basso, and Zach Mills) in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic
train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not
an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events
begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy (Ron Eldard), one kid's
father, tries to uncover the truth – and discovers something more
terrifying than any of them could have imagined. Not much else is known
about this mystery sci-fi thriller, directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek,
TV's Alias, and Lost) from his original script, produced by Steven
Spielberg.

Fri June 10 - Mon June 13
WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (PG-13) 115min 5:30 and 8:00
Rob Pattinson (Twilight), Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) and Christoph
Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) star in this brand new adaptation of the
best-selling novel by Sara Gruen, directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am
Legend). The story follows a young veterinary student who, after the
deaths of his parents, takes a job caring for the animals in a travelling
circus full of freaks and misfits, and falls in love with the star
performer of the show through their compassion for a particular elephant,
even though she is married to the charismatic but dangerous animal
trainer.

Tues June 14 - Thurs June 16
IN A BETTER WORLD (R) 113min [partly in Swedish and Danish with
subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00
In this year's Oscar-winning foreign language film, Danish director
Susanne Bier explores the choices people make between revenge and
forgiveness, as both parents and children must deal with the consequences
of circumstance and situation. Anton (Mikael Persbrandt, Everlasting
Moments) works in a war-torn African country as a doctor who must deal
with the atrocities dealt by a vicious war lord. His family remains in
Denmark where his son is bullied at school; the kid just takes the abuse
until one day a new student, whose mom just died from cancer, comes to his
defense in a big way. They form a strong bond, but subsequent events test
their friendship.

**************

Sunday June 12
GASLAND (NR) 107min 2pm Free
Gasland is an Oscar-nominated documentary, directed by Josh Fox. After he
is asked to lease his land for drilling, he journeys across America and
discovers a trail of secrets, lies and contamination about natural gas.
The negative effects of natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing
range from poisoned water sources (picture things that burst into flame)
to unhealthy animals and people. Is natural gas a viable home-grown
alternative to the country's dwindling energy resources, or do the
potential harmful consequences outweigh the positive? Fox's film raises
these and many more probing questions. We will have a moderated
discussion after the film with Linda and Robert Godfrey from SAVE
PASSAMAQUODDY BAY. The Sierra Club offers these films at no charge to get
people focused on the environment.

[Reel Pizza] update June 3 - 9

hey everyone

Summer has started! The local graduations have begun, this weekend at
COA, and soon for the Highschool and 8th graders. CONGRATS to everyone
who has completed this milestone; go out and do great things.

And I am working on the schedule that runs past July 4th!

This Friday at 11pm we welcome the first installment of the fourth year of
IMPROVISION, our occasional late-night collaboration with the talented and
fun folks at ImprovAcadia, who make up the soundtrack, dialogue and
effects to a cheesy old movie (with the sound off) that they have never
seen before. They can and do make anything funny! It is a new show every
time; take a restorative nap or have a coffee after dinner and come check
it out.

Films for this week are:

Fri June 3 - Thurs June 9 KUNG FU PANDA 2 (PG) 91min 5:30 and 7:45

Fri June 3 LATE NIGHT: IMPROVISION (NR) 11pm

Fri June 3 - Mon June 6 FAST FIVE (PG-13) 130min 6:00 and 8:30

Tues June 7 - Thurs June 9 KORKORO (NR) 111min [in French and Romani
with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:15

see you soon
-Lisa

*************************

Fri June 3 - Thurs June 9
KUNG FU PANDA 2 (PG) 91min 5:30 and 7:45
Po the Panda (Jack Black) is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior,
protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu
masters, The Furious Five (Mantis, Tiger, Monkey, Snake and Crane). But
Po's new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a
formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to
conquer China and destroy kung fu. Po must look to his past and uncover
the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock
the strength he needs to succeed.

Fri June 3 - Mon June 6
FAST FIVE (PG-13) 130min 6:00 and 8:30
High-octane energy and scenic, Brazilian locales propel this popcorn flick
with audacious stunts and a fun, exciting heist-caper plot. Vin Diesel,
Paul Walker, and Jordana Brewster and many supporting actors from previous
sequels are joined by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who goes up against Diesel
bicep to bicep. Johnson plays a federal agent assigned to bring down
unlikely partners ex-con Dom (Diesel) and ex-cop Brian (Walker) who have
gotten themselves cornered in a high stakes race, and have to pull one
last job to gain their freedom.

Tues June 7 - Thurs June 9
KORKORO (NR) 111min [in French and Romani with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:15
This passionate and lovely new movie from Romani filmmaker Tony Gatlif
(Latcho Drom, Gadjo Dilo) presents the plight of the gypsy people in
France during WW2, when both the Nazis and the French government were
working against them, through a single family's story. When the French
outlawed nomads, these migrant workers found their way of life illegal.
As they struggle to adapt to their new static situation, some try to help
them, including a provincial veterinarian and a young school teacher, but
most French look on them as common thieves. One (played by Charlie
Chaplin's grandson James Thiérrée) takes in an orphaned French child who
finds a loving home with these misunderstood people, and although he has
other options, he chooses their fate. The film's title means "freedom" in
Romani, the images show their compelling customs, and the soundtrack
features their exquisitely spirited music.
