Friday - Thursday
May 8 - 14
STATE OF PLAY (PG-13) 127min
6:00 and 8:30
With an all-star cast, this blistering political thriller from director
Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) finds journalists and
politicians alternately back-scratching and back-stabbing. Ben Affleck is
an up-and-coming Congressman destined to be the party's next presidential
nominee. At least, he is until his assistant, and mistress is murdered.
Robin Wright Penn is his long-suffering wife. Russell Crowe is an
investigative journalist trying to untangle a string of murders. Rachel
McAdams is an ambitious blogger who assisting the investigation, whether
he wants her help or not, and Helen Mirrin is the beleaguered newspaper
editor who needs the story on time and within budget. Written by Tony
Gilroy (Michael Clayton) and Billy Ray (Shattered Glass) based on a BBC
television series, this is an intelligent look into the current state of
print journalism and the power struggle and intrigue of Congress that
doesn't flinch.

Friday - Monday
MAY 8 - 11
HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE (G) 102min
5:30 and 7:45
Miley Cyrus stars as Miley Stewart, a smart, nice, young (brunette)
California teen who leads an alternative life as singing pop-star princess
(blonde) Hannah Montana, like in Disney's TV show. But when Miley begins
to forget her roots and can't seem to shift between her two worlds, her
dad (Miley's real dad Billy Ray Cyrus) sends her home to Tennessee for
some detox. This Beverly Hills girl certainly feels out of place in the
small, home-town, rural community to start, but soon she finds a place to
fit in, with her family, her community, and the cute ranch hand, even as
she must try to avoid a nosy reporter. From director Peter Chelsom
(Funny Bones, Shall We Dance), this is a fun, clean film with some catchy
songs.

Tuesday - Thursday
MAY 12 - 14
SECRET OF THE GRAIN (NR) 151min [in French and Arabic with subtitles]
5:30 and 8:15
This touching and resoundingly humanistic story set in the rustic port of
Sete in southeastern France introduces Slimane who has worked in the same
shipyard job for over 35 years when his growing dissatisfaction prompts
him to try to open his own restaurant. His dream seems unbelievable, but
his contagious conviction and persistence work their way into the hearts
of his loyal but dispersed family; the four children from his first
marriage, his ex-wife, current girlfriend and her bright, outspoken
daughter, Rym (played to great acclaim by the stunning newcomer Hafsia
Herzi). A grand film about ordinary people, this is a deliciously
slow-burning drama about fate, food and family.
