[Reel Pizza] update April 25 - May 1

hi everyone

We are looking forward to this weekend! It will be a busy Sunday at Reel Pizza.  In the afternoon we are hosting the first of this year's SIERRA CLUB FREE MATINEE SERIES screenings; in honor of Earth Day and co-sponsored by COA, we will present the film DAMNATION at 2pm about dam removal efforts in Maine and in Washington State and Oregon.  COA faculty Ken Cline will lead a discussion after the film.  Then this Sunday evening, we are delighted to welcome Bar Harbor residents Gita Pullapilly and Aron Gaudet, directors of the brand new film BENEATH THE HARVEST SKY that they filmed in Aroostook County.  Their new film is opening this Friday across Maine, including at Reel Pizza, before it opens in New York!  They will attend both Sunday screenings and will talk about their film and take audience questions.  Dustin Hamman, the musician who wrote the score, will also play live before both Sunday shows.

And I want to put out the word that our entire family watched this mid-week's film, the "you've-never-heard-of-it" JOURNEY TO THE WEST last night and must report that all of us thought it was a total hoot, lots of fun, and is highly recommended.  Plays tonight and tomorrow at 6:00 and 8:30.

See you soon!

BRAND NEW!  The narrative feature debut of Bar Harbor residents Gita Pullapilly and Aron Gaudet (The Way We Get By), recently honored by Variety as one of “Ten Directors to Watch” is getting a special early release in Maine.  Filmed in Van Buren, this gripping, coming-of-age thriller follows fiercely loyal friends Caspar and Dominic, both desperate to find a way out of Aroostook County.  They make a pact to pool their earnings to buy a car that will take them away, but life forces adult choices that push their friendship to the brink.  The film has been lauded for its authentic portrait of small town life.  The directors, will attend the Sunday screenings for Q&A, accompanied by the musician who wrote the score who will perform before both screenings.  Trailer

MR PEABODY AND SHERMAN  (PG)  92min 5:30 and 7:30
Visually delightful, fast-paced and witty, this entertaining update of the Rocky and Bullwinkle segment “Peabody’s Improbably History” is a total success.  Brainy Mr Peabody, a pun-loving dog too smart to be a pet, is the adopted father to nerdy Sherman.  Sherman’s nemesis at school is a girl named Penny, and when he tries to impress her with a spin in Peabody’s WABAC time travel machine, a tear in the fabric of the universe leads to havoc on all kinds as they visit Renaissance Florence, both ancient Troy and ancient Egypt, revolutionary France, and the American colonies.  Director Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, The Lion King) has made a film that is fun for all ages. Tues Apr 29 - Thurs May 1
PARTICLE FEVER  (NR)  99min 5:30 and 7:45
This crowd-pleasing and fully inspiring documentary about the Large Hadron Collider, the largest machine ever built (in Switzerland) whose objective is to detect sub-atomic (Higgs bosun) particles by replicating the Big Bang in miniature, is accessible to all ages, anyone curious about the world.  Directed by physicist turned filmmaker Mark Levinson, and fluidly edited by 2X Oscar-winner Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient), this film follows six scientists who seek to uncover the mysteries of the structure of the universe, over seven years as this epic machine is launched.  They are able to discuss in laymen’s terms about their significant search and the challenges facing their innovation. DAMNATION  (NR)  87min   FREE  2:00pm matinee
This special Earth Day edition of our annual Sierra Club film series is co-sponsored by College of the Atlantic.  Dam removal both in Maine and across the country is becoming mainstream.  This film explores the change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to a growing awareness that our future is inextricably tied to the life and health of our nation’s rivers.  Using majestic cinematography and unexpected discoveries, this film highlights dam removal projects in Maine, Oregon and Washington State.  COA professor Ken Cline will lead discussion after the film.
