[Reel Pizza] Schedule Sept 7 - 27

Happy September!  Here is the next full schedule for Reel Pizza that runs Sept 7 - 27, 2012.

In addition to the MIFF By-the-Sea films this weekend, of which you have received previous notice, we also have an edition of IMPROVISION with the talented crew of ImprovAcadia Friday night at 11pm.

Next weekend is the ACADIA NIGHT SKY FESTIVAL.  Let's hope for clear skies!  We are involved with three film events happening over the course of the weekend.  On Friday, Sept 14 at 7pm there is a free, family-friendly (rated G) outdoor movie on the Village Green that Chris will be screening (your favorite puppet Frog and his well-dressed Porcine sweetheart rescue their friend who has been kidnapped to space).  I believe that in the case of inclement weather, the screening is moved into the Congregational Church next door.

On Saturday afternoon 9/15 at 3pm, we will host a matinee screening of the film CONTACT HAS BEGUN, the story of James Gilliland who claims to have regular UFO activity over his Washington State home.  The producer will introduce the film.  There is a $3 admission.

On Sunday afternoon 9/16, we will host another segment of the SIERRA CLUB SUMMER ENVIRONMENTAL FILM SERIES, sponsored by the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club, with a free matinee screening of the film THE CITY DARK at 2pm.  This well-reviewed  film takes viewers on a quest to understand how light pollution affects both people and the planet.  Brandi Smith, working with the National Park Service and writing her thesis on nighttime visitor resources and the nighttime visitor experience, will speak.

Starting Tuesday we will be returning MOONRISE KINGDOM.  Please be aware that it will play for a full week,  continuing through the next weekend and ending Monday.  Also, many of you have been asking for SLEEPWALK WITH ME; there are still limited prints (no matter what Ira Glass says!) but we expect it later in September or early October.

ok here we go!  Hope to see you this weekend.

MOONRISE KINGDOM  (PG-13)  94min

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!  In director Wes Anderson’s (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore, Royal Tennenbaums) consistently delightful new film, co-written with Roman Coppola, two twelve year-olds – one an orphan at Scout Camp, the other a lonely local girl – fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness.  Set on a New England coastal island in the summer of 1965, the peaceful island community is turned upside-down as the authorities, including the sheriff (Bruce Willis), the Scout Master (Ed Norton), the girl’s parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) and a Social Services representative (Tilda Swinton) try to hunt them down before a hurricane arrives.

HYSTERIA (R)  95min

This discreet and lighthearted romantic comedy from director Tanya Wexler features an accomplished cast set in the highly costumed Victorian-era and is based on a true story.  Dr. Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce) has a popular and established practice, exclusively treating a number of women’s maladies with a technique of intimate manual pelvic manipulation, and can’t keep up with the number of afflicted patients seeking treatment.  He also has two daughters of marriageable age, one prim and proper (Felicity Jones) who seeks a husband, the other a rebellious suffragette (Maggie Gyllenhaal).  He hires a progressive and dashing young physician, Dr. Granville (Hugh Dancy) to help in his office, but soon his new hire suffers from what we would know is carpal tunnel syndrome.  This is the sweet and funny story of how he solves his predicament with the help of a friend (Rupert Everett) who dabbles in the new world of electricity.

THE CAMPAIGN  (R)  85min

This equal-opportunity skewering of the political process by director Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) is less concerned with politics than belly laughs, but still has a satirical bite.  Long-term NC congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) makes a stinging public gaffe before an election, and two wealthy corporate titans (John Lithgow and Dan Akroyd) fund an opposing candidate to take him on, naïve and unlikely Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), local tourist center director.  With the help of a cutthroat campaign director (Dylan McDermott) Huggins soon becomes a contender and as the election nears the two are locked in a dead heat…to the bottom.

THE WELL-DIGGER’S DAUGHTER  (NR)  105min  [in FRENCH with subtitles]

This year's MIFF Audience Award Winner!  Daniel Auteuil (Caché, The Valet), who came to prominence in the adaptations of Marcel Pagnol’s 1980’s art house hits Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring, returns to the work of the writer in his directing debut.  In this remake of the 1940 classic story of fall and redemption, he stars as Pascale, a poor widower in the gorgeous Provence countryside trying to raise his many daughters.  The oldest (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) has just returned from school in Paris to help, and her father dreams of marrying her to his faithful assistant Felipe (Kad Merad).  But she falls for the son of the local shopkeepers, a wealthy pilot, who woos her and then abandons her for the frontlines of WWI.

THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN  (PG)  100min

This timeless, magical fairy tale comes from screenwriter (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and About a Boy) and director (Dan in Real Life, Pieces of April) Peter Hedges from a story by Ahmet (son of Frank) Zappa.  Joey Edgerton and Jennifer Garner star as a happily married couple in the small town of Stanleyville, but frustrated by their inability to have a child.  One night they put down all their wishes for a child on a sheet of paper and bury it in the backyard.  After a wild storm, an unexpected knock on their door is ten year old Timothy, who says he belongs to them.  Their lives and those of their community are upended.

5 BROKEN CAMERAS  (NR)  90min  [in HEBREW and ARABIC with subtitles]

This Sundance winner is a deeply personal, first-hand account of non-violent resistance in Bil'in, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching Israeli settlements. Shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, the footage was later given to Israeli co-director Guy Davidi to edit.   Structured around the violent destruction of each one of Burnat's cameras, the filmmakers' collaboration follows one family's evolution over five years of village turmoil. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify, and lives are lost.

HOPE SPRINGS  (PG-13)  100min

Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones are excellent as a long-time married Mid-western couple at a stalemate.  Chatty Kay wants to spice up their life and buys a self-help book by a famous couples’ therapist (playing it straight, Steve Carell) for advice, and then buys plane tickets to visit his practice in coastal Maine.  First issue is to get her skeptical, taciturn husband merely on the plane.  This honest and observant drama from director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) and TV writer Vanessa Taylor is at times funny, awkward, surprising, thoughtful and altogether enjoyable.

RUBY SPARKS  (R)  103min

Zoe Kazan has written and stars in this delightfully original and mesmerizing story about a young writer (Paul Dano) who hasn’t been able to come up with a second novel after his first phenomenal success as a teen a decade ago.  His shrink (Elliot Gould) gives him a homework assignment and he writes some pages about the girl of his dreams.  When he wakes up one morning to find her in the flesh and blood in his kitchen he wonders if he is hallucinating.  His brother can see her too, so she must be real.  Directed by the husband and wife team of Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton (Little Miss Sunshine) this is an engaging movie with an intriguing, surprising premise.

IMPROVISION (NR)
Check out our occasional, wacky collaboration with the talented ImprovAcadia crew!  With the sound turned off, this ever changing group of up-and-coming young comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound effects to a cheesy, grade-B movie, THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.  Their talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they were ever anticipated.  It's a totally new show every time.  Don't miss out on all the fun!

CONTACT HAS BEGUN  (NR)  86min

This film explores the story of James Gilliland, who claims to have regular UFO activity over his Trout Lake Property nestled in the foothills of Mount Adams in Washington State. This film details his experiences with off worlders, while also exploring near death experiences, ORBs and global Earth changes. See real UFO footage and find out where they came from and why they are here. Introduction from film producer. $3/adults, children under 16 free.

THE CITY DARK (NR) 83min

Filmmaker Ian Cheney moves to New York City from Maine and discovers an urban sky almost completely devoid of stars. The film leads viewers on a quest to understand how light pollution affects people and the planet. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, philosophers, historians, and lighting designers, this is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars. Brandi Smith, working with the National Park Service, whose thesis research is on nighttime resources and the night visitor experience, will speak.  Sponsored by the Maine Chapter of Sierra Club to get people focused on the environment.
