[Reel Pizza] schedule May 6 - May 26

Spring greetings

The leaves have started coming out, and the flower beds out front are full
of tulips, so it must be time for BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES! Most certainly not
entirely, but be aware that at Reel Pizza we are about to begin the summer
movie season, since this is when Hollywood has deemed it time to start.
We expect to have anticipated first run product for you all regularly well
into August... with the best of independent American and foreign films
filling the other side. And of course, continuing special programming.
Stay tuned for details.

We also have some NEW ART IN THE LOBBY (Hurray!) Photographs courtesy of
David Westphal of Somesville and Eric Perkins of Hancock.

David has shown here previously. A fall visit to Bosque del Apache
National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico to witness the annual arrival of
tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes piqued his interest in migration. He
began fascinated by flight, specifically, the wings themselves. His
images are from the wildlife refuge, the Tempisque River basin in Costa
Rica, and Somesville's own Mill Pond.

Eric has been doing photography for some sixty years, and learned darkroom
work in a little island shed in Taunton Bay. There was no electricity, so
to expose the paper for printing, it was necessary to very quickly open
and close a small window. His photographs lately have as their subject
matter objects that we see every day but don't often really look at.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
with appreciation
-Lisa and Chris

Fri - Mon, May 6 - 9
CEDAR RAPIDS (R) 87min
Insurance agent Tim Lippe (Ed Helms, The Hangover) is beyond naïve.
Though he does have a girlfriend, his former 7th grade teacher (Sigourney
Weaver), he has never been out of his sleepy Wisconsin hometown. Yet now
he's been chosen to represent his company at the regional convention in
the big city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. New experiences, like a plane ride,
car rental, a hotel stay, and meeting a black person, are only part of his
future. His initiation by three convention veterans (Isaiah Whitlock Jr.,
John C. Reilley, and Anna Heche) finds him in an urban jungle he's only
ever seen on DVD. This consistently funny, sweet and charming film with
an excellent ensemble cast is from director Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl).

Tues - Thurs, May 10 - 12
POTICHE (R) 103min [in FRENCH with subtitles]
This playful French farce from director François Ozon (Swimming Pool, 8
Women) reunites iconic stars Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu.
Based on a 1970's play and colorfully and comically updated by the
director, the title means "trophy wife" crossed with "status symbol"
referring to Ms. Deneuve's character, a wife and mother of two grown and
totally different children. She brought to her marriage an umbrella
factory started by her father that is now run by her tyrannical husband
(Fabrice Luchini) who also abuses his secretary/mistress. The workers
tire of his meanness and, during a strike, take him hostage; she takes
over the reins of the business which everyone expects will be an utter
failure, but with the help of an old beau who still has a flame for her,
the communist mayor (Mr. Depardieu), she just might prove herself to be a
competent boss.

Fri - Thurs, May 13 - 19
THOR (PG-13) 130min 5:30 and 8:15
in2D Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is a powerful but arrogant warrior in the
mythical realm of Asgard. When his reckless actions reignite an ancient
conflict, he is banished to present-day Earth and forced to live among
humans. After the most dangerous villain of his home world sends its
darkest forces to invade Earth, Thor learns what it takes to be a true
hero. With dramatic strength and impressive action, director Kenneth
Branagh turns this lesser Marvel comic into a captivating, entertaining
adventure, fabulously starting the summer blockbuster movie season.

Fri - Mon, May 13 - 16
SOURCE CODE (PG-13) 94min 6:00 and 8:00
An Army pilot (Jake Gyllenhaal), who last remembers being in Afghanistan,
wakes up on a Chicago commuter train talking to a woman (Michelle
Monaghan) he does not know, in a body that is not his. A few disorienting
minutes later the train explodes killing everyone aboard. And the man
finds his real self in a cramped pod taking orders from a military
superior (Vera Farmiga) and a scientist (Jeffrey Wright) who directly send
him back to the train to relive those few minutes over in the same body,
again and again until he can discover who is behind the attack, so as to
prevent a subsequent bombing. Except that, with every additional visit,
he starts to fall for the woman. The second feature from director Duncan
Jones (Moon) is a smart, twisty, and suspenseful science fiction thriller
with an excellent cast who create an appealing, credible film.

Tues - Thurs, May 17 - 19
THE CONCERT (PG-13) 120min [in RUSSIAN and FRENCH w/ subtitles] 6:00
and 8:30
Once the renowned conductor of the esteemed Bolshoi Orchestra, Andrei
Filipov (Alekksei Guskov) was abruptly demoted (during a performance) to
janitor by the Communists when he refused to fire his Jewish and Gypsy
musicians. When he intercepts a fax thirty years later asking if the
current orchestra would be able to fill in for a cancellation at a Paris
engagement in two weeks, he decides on subversive revenge, to reunite his
former comrades and pass themselves off as the real deal, and perform his
interrupted piece, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D. He even hopes to
convince young virtuoso violinist Anne-Marie Jacquet (Mélanie Laurent,
Inglourious Basterds) to accompany them. Romanian writer-director Radu
Mihaileanu has made a heartfelt, funny and fast-paced screwball comedy
filled with glorious music.

Fri - Thurs, May 20 - June 2 (two weeks)
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4: ON STRANGER TIDES (PG-13) 141min 5:15 and
8:15 (valid for first week only!)
In 2D The fun and excitement continues in this new, action-packed
adventure comedy Oscar-nominated directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago).
Johnny Depp continues his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, who crosses
paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penélope Cruz), with whom he shares a
mysterious past. Is he in love, or is she a ruthless con, using him to
find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the ship of
legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) Capt. Jack isn't sure who to
fear more.

Fri - Mon, May 20 - 23
WIN WIN (R) 106min 5:45 and 8:00
Tom McCarthy scores again with his third film that explores the depths and
nuances of human relationships (after The Station Agent and The Visitor).
Here his protagonist is a cash-strapped attorney and high school wrestling
coach Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) who takes a risky, questionably
ethical action, taking financial advantage of an aging, wealthy client by
becoming his legal guardian without looking for relatives, as it comes
with a useful monthly stipend. First the man's grandson arrives
unannounced, but is taken in by the Flaherty family, and, bonus, he is
also a star student wrestler who gives a needed boost to the school team.
Then the man's addict daughter shows up looking for a handout, and the
whole plan appears to be on the verge of implosion. This delightful film
deftly balances heartfelt drama and off-beat comedy.

Tues - Thurs, May 24 - 26
OF GODS AND MEN (PG-13) 122min [in French and Arabic w/ subtitles]
5:30 and 8:00
Eight French Cistercian Trappist Monks live peacefully and harmoniously
with their Muslim neighbors in a monastery near an impoverished Algerian
town. They garden, sell honey and provide free basic medical services in
between their devotional duties, as has been the case for many decades
before. When the Algerian civil war breaks out, both the Islamic
fundamentalists and the Algerian army order them to leave. They debate
their place, and their collective decision comes from a different point of
view for each man. There are no easy answers. Based on true events in
the 1990's, this powerfully spiritual and beautiful film from director
Xavier Beauvois was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, and the
French Césars for Best Picture, Cinematography and supporting Actor.

HANNA (PG-13) 111min
This twisty and stylish adventure thriller interwoven with elements of
dark fairy tales stars Saoirse Ronan, reuniting with her Atonement
director Joe Wright. She plays the bright and devoted teen-aged daughter
being raised alone by her ex-CIA father (Eric Bana) in remote Finland.
Her entire education has been geared toward one end, to make her the
perfect assassin. When she gets out in the world, which she has never
experienced, she meets a family and befriends their daughter. But soon
she is detained by career CIA agent Marissa (Cate Blanchette), who has
long been harboring secrets that tie her to both Hanna and her father.

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (PG-13) 115min
Rob Pattinson (Twilight), Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) and Christoph
Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) star in this brand new adaptation of the
best-selling novel by Sara Gruen, directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am
Legend). The story follows a young veterinary student who, after the
deaths of his parents, takes a job caring for the animals in a traveling
circus full of freaks and misfits, and falls in love with the star
performer of the show through their compassion for a particular elephant,

trainer.
