[Reel Pizza] Schedule May 27 - June 16

Whew! This takes us right up to the last day of (elementary) school!
Hurrah!! Now this is a day I am looking forward to, perhaps even more than
my kids. Finally, a relaxing morning coffee...

Summer scheduling, if not temperature, is upon us. We have some special
programming, and the return of IMPROVISION, plus a bevy of brand new
Hollywood films and a wide selection of intriguing independent and foreign
fare to keep you entertained thru the lazy, hazy (or foggy and damp, if
this dreary weather doesn't break) days leading up to the real start of
summer. Remember, that any movie that is released in 3D that we show will
be screened in 2D at Reel Pizza.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING: We have again joined with our local Sierra Club to
bring a Summer Matinee Series of documentary films with environmental
themes, each concluding with moderated discussion. The first film of this
series will be GASLAND (NR) 107min at 2pm on Sunday June 12th. See the
film description below. Other films coming are GREENFIRE: ALDO LEOPOLD
AND A LAND ETHIC OF OUR TIME, MONUMENTAL: DAVID BROWER'S FIGHT FOR WILD
AMERICA, and a repeat of last year's overwhelmingly popular THE INCREDIBLE
JOURNEY OF THE BUTTERFLIES. We are still working out the exact schedule,
and I will let you know when it is all set.

LATE NIGHT FUN: IMPROVISION is back for its FOURTH Season! YEA! The
first installment will be Friday June 3 at 11pm. IF you don't know, this
wacky late night event is our occasional collaboration with the talented
crew at ImprovAcadia. With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group
of up-and-coming comedians create, on the spot, the dialog, music tracks
and sound effects to a cheesy Grade-B movie (from Chris's extensive
collection) THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE! (and most likely never heard
of.) Their talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they
were ever anticipated. It is a totally new show every time.

And below is our regular evening film schedule, which is all booked on
both screens so there are times included (except on the last week; still
waiting on one new film's running time)

See you soon!
-Lisa and Chris

Fri May 20 - Thurs June 2
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4: ON STRANGER TIDES (PG-13) 137min 5:15 and 8:15
In 2D The fun and excitement returns in this new, action-packed adventure
comedy Oscar-nominated directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago). Johnny Depp
continues his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, who crosses paths with
the enigmatic Angelica (Penélope Cruz), with whom he shares a mysterious
past. Is he in love, or is she a ruthless con, using him to find the
fabled Fountain of Youth? When she forces him aboard the ship of
legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) Capt. Jack isn't sure who to
fear more.

Fri May 27 - Mon May 30
THE CONSPIRATOR (PG-13) 122min 6:00 and 8:30
Robert Redford (Ordinary People, Quiz Show) directs this riveting and
moving legal drama based on true events nearly 150 years ago. A
confederate woman (Robin Wright) who operated a boarding house where John
Wilkes Booth and his cohorts met is accused of conspiracy against the US
Government in the wake of President Lincoln's assassination. A reluctant,
unwilling young lawyer and northern war hero (James McAvoy) is charged
with defending her and her right to a fair trial in the face of the
government's desire to convict quickly to appease an anxious public. This
absorbing, character-driven period drama that could be about events today
is historically accurate and features powerful performances.

Tues May 31 - Thurs June 2
FOUR TIMES (LE QUATTRO VOLTE) (NR) 88min [in ITALIAN with subtitles]
6:00 and 8:00
This is the antithesis to Hollywood. From Kenneth Turan's (LA Times)
review: "Perched between fiction and documentary, "Le Quattro Volte" is
above all a beautiful and profound evocation of the eternal cycles of life
and nature. (Director Michelangelo) Frammartino has made this evocation
feel all the more powerful by expressing it, not in the familiar explicit
changes of season, but through his discovery of the workings of
Pythagoras' belief (in four-fold transmigration, which holds that the soul
is passed from human to animal to vegetable to mineral) in the course of
everyday life in Caulonia (a remote Italian mountain village) and in its
ancient rituals. (The director) has found a fresh and ravishingly poetic
and beautiful way to explore the relationship between the spirit, man and
nature."

Fri June 3 - Thurs June 9
KUNG FU PANDA 2 (PG) 91min 5:30 and 7:45
Po the Panda (Jack Black) is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior,
protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu
masters, The Furious Five (Mantis, Tiger, Monkey, Snake and Crane). But
Po's new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a
formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to
conquer China and destroy kung fu. Po must look to his past and uncover
the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock
the strength he needs to succeed.

Fri June 3 - Mon June 6
FAST FIVE (PG-13) 130min 6:00 and 8:30
High-octane energy and scenic, Brazilian locales propel this popcorn flick
with audacious stunts and a fun, exciting heist-caper plot. Vin Diesel,
Paul Walker, and Jordana Brewster and many supporting actors from previous
sequels are joined by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who goes up against Diesel
bicep to bicep. Johnson plays a federal agent assigned to bring down
unlikely partners ex-con Dom (Diesel) and ex-cop Brian (Walker) who have
gotten themselves cornered in a high stakes race, and have to pull one
last job to gain their freedom.

Tues June 7 - Thurs June 9
KORKORO (NR) 111min [in French and Romani with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:15
This passionate and lovely new movie from Romani filmmaker Tony Gatlif
(Latcho Drom, Gadjo Dilo) presents the plight of the gypsy people in
France during WW2, when both the Nazis and the French government were
working against them, through a single family's story. When the French
outlawed nomads, these migrant workers found their way of life illegal.
As they struggle to adapt to their new static situation, some try to help
them, including a provincial veterinarian and a young school teacher, but
most French look on them as common thieves. One (played by Charlie
Chaplin's grandson James Thiérrée) takes in an orphaned French child who
finds a loving home with these misunderstood people, and although he has
other options, he chooses their fate. The film's title means "freedom" in
Romani, the images show their compelling customs, and the soundtrack
features their exquisitely spirited music.

Fri June 10 - Thurs June 16
SUPER 8 (PG-13? not yet rated) ??min
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends (Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney,
Gabriel Basso, and Zach Mills) in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic
train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not
an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events
begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy (Ron Eldard), one kid's
father, tries to uncover the truth – and discovers something more
terrifying than any of them could have imagined. Not much else is known
about this mystery sci-fi thriller, directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek,
TV's Alias, and Lost) from his original script, produced by Steven
Spielberg.

Fri June 10 - Mon June 13
WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (PG-13) 115min
Rob Pattinson (Twilight), Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) and Christoph
Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) star in this brand new adaptation of the
best-selling novel by Sara Gruen, directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am
Legend). The story follows a young veterinary student who, after the
deaths of his parents, takes a job caring for the animals in a travelling
circus full of freaks and misfits, and falls in love with the star
performer of the show through their compassion for a particular elephant,
even though she is married to the charismatic but dangerous animal
trainer.

Tues June 14 - Thurs June 16
IN A BETTER WORLD (R) 113min [partly in Swedish and Danish with subtitles]
In this year's Oscar-winning foreign language film, Danish director
Susanne Bier explores the choices people make between revenge and
forgiveness, as both parents and children must deal with the consequences
of circumstance and situation. Anton (Mikael Persbrandt, Everlasting
Moments) works in a war-torn African country as a doctor who must deal
with the atrocities dealt by a vicious war lord. His family remains in
Denmark where his son is bullied at school; the kid just takes the abuse
until one day a new student, whose mom just died from cancer, comes to his
defense in a big way. They form a strong bond, but subsequent events test
their friendship.

Sunday June 12
GASLAND (NR) 107min 2pm Free
Gasland is an Oscar-nominated documentary, directed by Josh Fox. After he
is asked to lease his land for drilling, he journeys across America and
discovers a trail of secrets, lies and contamination about natural gas.
The negative effects of natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing
range from poisoned water sources (picture things that burst into flame)
to unhealthy animals and people. Is natural gas a viable home-grown
alternative to the country's dwindling energy resources, or do the
potential harmful consequences outweigh the positive? Fox's film raises
these and many more probing questions. We hope to have a moderated
discussion after the film. The Sierra Club offers these films at no
charge to get people focused on the environment.

Coming Next Schedule?
Bridesmaids
The Hangover Part 2
Meek's Cutoff
Cars 2
X-Men First Class
Cave of Forgotten Dreams
African Cats
Incendies
