[Reel Pizza] update Sept 25 - Oct 1

hi everyone

Thank you to everyone who came out to Reel Pizza this past weekend for MIFF By-the-Sea and to all the filmmakers who came to town to share their work.  It was truly a great weekend of excellent films and speakers, and already we are looking forward to the 8th edition next fall!

We are back into regular films.  This weekend we will be opening the new comedy starring Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway THE INTERN.  And we will present the 18th edition of the MANHATTAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL. This was a great program we screened for the first time last year, in which the audience watches a program of 10 short films, both documentary and fiction (chosen from a record 678 entries) from filmmakers across the globe.  Then you mark a ballot with your choice of best film and best actor, which we tally and send on to headquarters, which is added to the choices from audiences all over the world (it is simultaneously screening in  over 250 countries this weekend); on Oct 5th the winners will be announced.

Here is this coming week's schedule, we look forward to seeing you soon!

This funny new intergenerational comedy is written and directed by Nancy Meyers (The Parent Trap, Something's Gotta Give).  trailer

Tues Sept 29 - Thurs Oct 1
THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT (R) 122min   5:30 & 8:00
Would you rather be a guard or a prisoner? This was the question placed to two dozen Stanford college students in 1971 who had chosen to participate in social psychology professor Dr. Zimbardo's (Billy Crudup) infamous two week experiment recreating the prison environment; he wanted to look at whether people in positions of authority tended to abuse that authority. The experiment had to be truncated after six days because of the increasingly vicious behavior of the guards and growing distress of the traumatized inmates. The issues raised by the events portrayed in this thought-provoking, absorbing and well-acted historical drama from director Kyle Patrick Alvarez are still relevant today.  trailer
