12 YEARS A SLAVE  (R)  134min  5:30 and 8:15
This exceptional and powerful film is an unflinching look at slavery in the US South in the mid-1800s.  Based in part on his published memoirs, Soloman Northup (with a masterful portrayal by Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a free, educated Black man in upstate NY who makes a living as a musician.  Lured to Washington DC with a promise of work, he is drugged, kidnapped, and sold as a slave, ending up on several plantations in Louisiana over the next dozen years.  During his saga of survival, he fights to regain his dignity and his identity, determined to return to his family.  Director Steve McQueen and screenwriter John Ridley have made a sobering masterpiece.  This is the WINNER of last night's Golden Globe Award for Best Film Drama.    trailer

ABOUT
TIME  (R)   124min
  6:00 and 8:30
Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) has not ever had any success with girlfriends.  When on his 21 st birthday his dad (Bill Nighy) tells him the family secret, that the men can time travel back in time to fix blunders, his first use of his secret is to go back to the previous New Year’s Eve and kiss his date, instead of shaking her hand as he did the first time.  Although this relationship was not to be, eventually, he meets a nice, beautiful girl (Rachel McAdams) and they fall in love; however, a time travel alterations for a friend changes things so he never meets Mary at all, and he must start over winning her heart, first by finding her.  This sincere and witty romantic comedy about making the most of life is from filmmaker Richard Curtis, acclaimed screenwriter (Bridget Jones Diary, Notting Hill) and director (Love Actually, Pirate Radio). trailer
