Tina Fey stars as a highly pressured Princeton admissions officer whose life takes some crazy spins and becomes increasingly difficult, in this smart comedy-drama from Paul Weitz (About a Boy).  She is in the midst of experiencing all the wacky extra-curricular skills that highschool students want to show her to convince that they are right for this picky, Ivy League school.  Hoping to replace her soon-to-retire boss, she discovers she has a rival for the job in her office mate.  Things aren’t great with her longtime boyfriend (Michael Sheen).  She heads out on the road on her annual recruiting trip and meets a former classmate, now the principal of an alternative school (Paul Rudd) with a student he really thinks she should consider, even though his grades are terrible; he also makes some unprofessional advances.  A visit with her hard-core feminist mother (Lily Tomlin) reminds her to stay away from all men.  What’s a girl to do?

GIRL RISING (PG-13)  104min  5:30 and 7:45

This energizing and informative documentary is about the lives of girls living in countries where their education is not a priority: Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Haiti, Ethiopia, Peru, Egypt, Nepal, Afghanistan and India.  In each of nine short films, a featured girl from each country who has overcome unthinkable obstacles tells her own story with the help of some of the most recognizable female voices of today, including Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchette, Kerry Washington, Selena Gomez, Alicia Keys and Anne Hathaway.  This film was directed by Richard Robbins and produced by 10x10, a social action organization undertaking a global campaign which seeks educational equality and empowerment for underprivileged girls across the globe in order to help break the cycle of poverty and transform communities.

FROM UP ON POPPY HILL  (PG)  91min

This Studio Ghibli release, adapted from a vintage manga by Hayao Miyazaki, is directed by his son Goro. It is a charming, sensitive, nostalgic and gorgeous film.  Set in a seaside town in postwar Japan, the country is readying for the 1964 Summer Olympics, with its efforts to present a bright modern country.  Umi is a lonely teenaged girl who lives with her grandmother helping with the boarding house.  She is noticed by Shun, a brash and captivating classmate.   Together they work to save the dilapidated mansion where many clubs have offices from demolition and a tentative relationship blossoms.  However, a buried secret from their past casts its shadow on their future.

Tues Apr 23 - Thurs Apr 25

A FIERCE GREEN FIRE  (NR)  101 min

In honor of Earth Day.  This passionate, provocative new film chronicles the history of the environmental movement over the past 50 years, starting at the moment when resource management became preservation, through the emergence of environmental justice, and touching on international efforts as the cause segues into the 21 st century.  Focusing on activism, this powerful film, narrated by Ashley Judd, Meryl Streep, Isabel Allende, Van Jones and Robert Redford, concentrates mainly on four successful, and one current, movements: The Sierra Club’s fight against damming in the Grand Canyon; the struggle by the residents of Love Canal to clean up the toxic waste dump; Greenpeace’s efforts to save the whales and seals; the work of Chico Mendes to save the Amazon Rainforest; finally the current struggle to combat the dangers of climate change.  Based on Philip Shabecoff’s novel, Mark Kitchell directs.

NO  (R)  118min  [in Spanish with subtitles]

In 1988, bowing to international pressure, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet agrees to a national referendum on his rule; simply, a yes vote keeps him in power for another eight years, and as he controlled the media he is unconcerned of the outcome.  He gives the “no” vote side 15minutes a day at midnight to make their case.  Gael Garcia Bernal stars as a young ad executive who convinces his client to audaciously make their case positive.  Based on true events and similar in spirit to Argo, this uplifting and funny Oscar nominated film from Chilean director Pablo Larrain uses archival footage including the original commercials and recorded endorsements by American celebrities including Jane Fonda and Christopher Reeve.

Coming on the Second Screen?

THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE  (PG-13)   100min

Edgy and clever, this refreshingly funny comedy pits rival superstar magicians against each other as they wage a turf war on the Las Vegas Strip.  Steve Carell is Burt, who has been raking in millions with his longtime partner Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi).  His growing ego threatens their friendship, while cutthroat competition from a newcomer, guerilla illusionist Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), has outrageous stunts that make their act look stale.  In supporting roles Alan Arkin plays a retired veteran magician and James Gandolfini is a casino owner.  Don Scardino (30 Rock) directs from an original script by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Horrible Bosses).

THE CROODS  (PG)  98min

This ingenious, creative and visually fantastic new animated film follows a stone-aged family on a road trip.  From a story developed by Python John Cleese and directed by Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon) with Kirk De Micco, this comedy-adventure about the meeting of a Neanderthal and an early Homo Sapien is heavily influenced by early Chuck Jones cartoons out of Warner Brothers.  Set in a transitional time in the history of the Earth, at a time when human society evolved significantly, a close-knit family led by its patriarch (Nicholas Cage) is trying to survive when change happens suddenly.  The daughter (Emma Stone) has defied protocol and met a nomad (Ryan Reynolds) who leads them to safety.

SPRING BREAKERS (R)  94min

Four co-eds and long-time friends (Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine) are broke, bummed to be stuck in their dorm for spring break, and would much rather be in Florida having some fun.  They make some dubious choices, but do get there, only to land in jail; they are rescued by white rapper Alien (James Franco) who posts their bail, but wants their help, which will surely make this the most thrilling vacation ever. Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo) has made an audacious social commentary about hedonistic, nihilistic people who spend their lives in pursuit of the endless party.

THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES  (R)  140min

An excellent cast, including Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Bradley Cooper, and Ray Liotta combine with director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) in his second excellent film.  This original, provocative drama powerfully explores the consequences of stunt motorcycle rider Luke’s (Gosling) fateful decision to use crime to support his son.  This act leads him to be the target of a loser college dropout and rookie cop (Cooper).  Their encounter has a devastating impact on both of their families in the years following.

THE SAPPHIRES   (PG-13)  99min

From Australia, this based on a true story follows a group of talented Aboriginal girl singers in the late 1960s who earn the opportunity to travel to Vietnam to entertain the US troops and learn about love, friendship and war.  Writer Tony Briggs used the story of his mom and three aunts to create the stage play that became this charming and joyous debut film from new director Wayne Blair.  Facing home-grown racism and romantic troubles too, three sisters who’ve been singing together since childhood enter a talent show run by a broken but kind and scruffy piano player (Chris O’Dowd, Bridesmaids).  He becomes these girls’ manager and encourages them to drop their maudlin country-western songs for exuberant soul and helps them find their first taste of stardom.
