Happy Memorial Day weekend, last weeks of school and Graduation, and Summer, if only at the movies!

This is a complete schedule, so there are dates and showtimes for all the films listed. The schedule is in brief to start (after all the miscellaneous info) and then in full with descriptions and trailer links after.

SOMETHING NEW! We are now able to receive orders for takeout (only) thru a new online service. Link thru our facebook webpage or the Reel Pizza website. Complimentary Android and Apple Apps for your device will be coming soon! (I will let you know when that happens.) Options include ordering in advance, and ordering with friends but paying separately! Pickup will be quick and easy because the order is already paid for. And remember that it will always remain a choice to call us with your order, or to order directly at the counter, especially after 9pm when the service turns off. "I see art all around us.  I'm fascinated by the infinite beauty in nature – its patterns and unique playful asymmetric expressions.  In my photography I strive to find the light that will shine through and illuminate a part of nature you might not see.  I've worn many hats over the years and lived in many places.  I am a mom, grandma, partner and friend – the family and people in my life truly inspire me and are precious lights in my life.  I've lived in over 30 places I could count as home, starting out in New Jersey and growing up in Israel, with strong ties to New York, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, settling down now in beautiful Brooksville, Maine.  Somewhere along the way my passion to learn emerged, and I have degrees in all different fields from New York University, Pace University, Auburn University and National Defense University.  I love to take care of people and am a nurse with specialties in hospice, critical care, trauma, and military flight nursing.  Recently retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service and a three-time cancer survivor, I currently am a Professor at University of Colorado College of Nursing developing a new clinical specialty of Veteran and Military Health Care.  My dream is to someday have a working studio and fully indulge my artistic endeavors in photography, metalsmithing, stone-setting, dichroic glass, and three-dimensional beadwork to create more beauty and reflection in this world."

With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group of up and coming comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound effects to a cheesy, grade B movie, THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE! Their talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they were ever anticipated. It's a totally new show every time. Don't miss out on all the fun.

Seems like only yesterday, but it was actually 20 years ago, on Friday June 9th, 1995, that we showed our first film and served our first pizza. A LOT has changed over the past two decades, but not our commitment to providing a (nearly) year-round cozy space for meeting and eating. We are deeply grateful to our friends, neighbors and seasonal guests who have supported us through thick and thin, allowing us to do something we truly enjoy so that we could raise our family in one of the best places anywhere. We do our best to return that, and look forward to the future with enthusiasm and excitement. Cheers!

Celebrated photojournalist Sebastião Salgado, who over the past 40 years has borne witness with his indelible, large-format black and white images to some of the major, horrific events of recent history, bringing attention to remote corners of the earth that needed noticing, is the subject of this Oscar-nominated documentary.  Directors Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club, Pina) and Salgado's son Juliano directed this thought-provoking testament to the career of a man who has found humanity in scenes of despair, and is now embarking on a huge project to document pristine places as a tribute to the planet's beauty.  trailer

[Reel Pizza] Update May 15 - 21

Hi everyone

I apologize that it may appear I am neglecting you.  Once again, the movie schedule week overwhelms, as it always does.  Today we hosted the MDIHS Senior Class for their Social Responsibility Day, a once a year activity we love and have been doing for many years, but upends the routine.  Plus we have just installed a new online-takeout ordering system that you can access from our website or our facebook page which will be detailed in the next email that you receive (the one with the next schedule, coming shortly!)  So lots of  fun and exciting "STUFF" happening that makes me forget what I am supposed to be doing!  perhaps I can blame an aging brain???

This weekend we are opening a brand new movie!  It must be close to summer!  The highly anticipated MAD MAX: FURY ROAD will start tomorrow and play for two weeks.  It stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy and is getting awesome early reviews.  And if that is not your cup of tea (and that is fine!), we have WOMEN IN GOLD, a remarkable historical drama starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds about a elderly woman trying to be reunited with a beloved painting stolen from her family by the Nazis during WW2, and a terrific documentary, THE WRECKING CREW, about the fabulous band who played behind most of the popular top 40 acts of the 1960s and 1970s that came out of Los Angeles, including Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, the Beach Boys and many others.

of the Austrian government while forcing her to confront her

You may not be surprised to learn that the music played on recordings by
The Monkees, Sonny and Cher or Captain and Tenille were studio
musicians, but you might be more astonished to learn that group also
included The Byrds, The Beach Boys, all the bands that made up Phil
Spector's Wall of Sound, Elvis, Simon and Garfunkle, and more. Behind
nearly every hit in the heyday of Top Forty music out of Los Angeles in
the 1960s and 1970s, as well as many well-known TV theme songs - 
Bonanza, Mission Impossible, Pink Panther - was this same group of jazz
musicians who played without credit even though they were the best in
the business. Few escaped anonymity, so be prepared to discover the
talents of Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Carol Kaye, Plas Johnson, and Tommy
Tedesco, whose son Daniel made this documentary that took ten years to
get the rights to all the songs. trailer

Hi everyone

The Senior Matinees are history till next winter, the tulips in the planter boxes are getting ready to bloom and time is marching towards the start of summer, as this schedule takes us right up to the start of Memorial Day weekend. Whoo Hoo!  Can we start thinking about swimming yet??  OK, I realize Ice Out was just... yesterday? ...but a girl's gotta have hope.  :)

We do have open positions in the front/counter starting now, so if you are interested in part- or full-time, thru the summer, into the fall, or year-round, in a fun, fast-paced environment, come by weekday (M - Th) afternoons/evenings, or by appt, and talk to Chris.

We will be bringing the new AVENGERS movie likely during the next schedule as well as the start of another season of ImproVision and our Sierra Club Summer Film Series, but in the meanwhile there are many different choices of films to choose from in the next few weeks. In this deadpan comedy, Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) plays a quiet lonely office worker whose job is to serve tea to her boss.  She becomes obsessed with the Coen brother's movie Fargo, and because it says in the film's opening credits "this is a true story," she believes it to be so.  She sets off from Tokyo on a quixotic search to North Dakota in winter to recover the buried suitcase of cash, which takes her on an increasingly dangerous adventure.  This strangely touching, alternately whimsical and heartbreaking story is from Texas independent filmmaking brothers David and Nathan Zellner.  trailer

Happy Earth Day everyone!  And with that, a reminder that we have a free screening in honor of Earth Day at 2pm on Saturday afternoon (4/25) of the movie WRENCHED (NR) that looks at the history and continuing struggle to keep America's wilderness areas wild, with discussion afterward led by a COA senior who has worked on a project to protect Utah's Red Rocks Wilderness, an area near and dear to our hearts.  Thank you to COA and the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club for bringing this film to all of us.  Doors open at 1:30.

Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, this satirically comedic, illuminating and thought-provoking documentary explores the deceptive tactics used by large corporations to undermine public policy and sway public opinion by discrediting peer-reviewed, scientific studies with pundits-for-hire who present themselves as experts but are really just obfuscators.  Filmmaker Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) starts with big tobacco which for 50 years manipulated prevented regulation on smoking, moving into toxic chemicals from big pharma, and now these spin-meisters work to fight against climate change.  trailer

As part of COA's Earth Day celebration and co-sponsored by both COA and the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club, we present this fascinating documentary that captures the passing of the monkey wrench from the pioneers of eco-activism to the new generation which will carry Edward Abbey's legacy into the 21st century as the fight continues to sustain the last bastion of the American wilderness - the spirit of the West.  Chris Phillips, a senior at COA, recently worked with the Utah Wilderness Coalition to lobby congressmen for co-sponsorship on the America's Red Rock Wilderness Act Bill, which aims to safeguard 9.3 million acres of federal public land in Utah with the highest level of protection possible. After the film he will discuss his experience, Ed Abbey, and current issues facing Utah public lands.  trailer

[Reel Pizza] update April 17 - 23

Big Smile!  I do not see any snow from my second floor perch (as long as you don't count the top of Cadillac Mountain or what is lurking around the corner!)  We have certainly earned this fabulous weather. 

With the departure of winter, this Thursday will be the final Senior Matinee of the season.  Cinderella will screen at 1pm.  We will start back up again when the snow flies -- but, really, let's not think about that right now, ok?

Have you seen the new ART up on our lobby walls? Please join us this coming Saturday, April 18, from 2 to 4 pm for the opening of "Work{er}s in Progress", an exhibit of recent works by students at Mount Desert Island High School.  Artist Meghan McDunnah blends traditional and digital techniques  to produce unique works reflecting her response to  film and television. Joni Mangarella and Emma Fernald show life drawings from work they have done with Artwaves. Molly Brown, Mary Paola, Ellie McGee, Cala Coffman, Dana Clarito and Izzy Iannuzzi show works that include cyanotypes and illustrations inspired by the work of Wes Anderson and Shakespeare. Music will be provided by jazz musicians from Mount Desert Island High School.

The second installment in the Divergent young adult film series based on Veronica Roth's books, follows the resourceful heroine Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) who are now fugitives and hunted by the leader of the elite Erudites (Kate Winslet).  They are searching for answers to why Tris's family sacrificed their lives and why the Erudites want them stopped.  It is a satisfying, action-heavy science fiction.  Returning co-stars include Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Ansel Elgort (Fault in our Stars); new cast members include Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts.  trailer

The West African nation of Mauritania earned its first Oscar nomination for this visually and musically stunning, humorous as well as horrifying story about the absurdities of religiously fundamental jihadists who are now in control and enforcing Sharia Law upon the citizens of a previously peaceful and content multi-ethnic desert town, and they are powerless and suffering.  Kidane is a proud cattle herder living outside of town with his wife, daughter and young farm hand and are largely immune to the chaos in town, until an abrupt event changes everything.  trailer
