[Reel Pizza] update June 28 -July 4

Hi everyone!

We are "departing the text" this week...couldn't get any of the films we put on the schedule as hopefuls for this weekend, but were able to secure a print of the brand new WORLD WAR Z starring Brad Pitt.  It will play Friday thru Tuesday July 2.  On Wednesday July 3 we will start another brand new movie, Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in THE LONE RANGER.  Disney-Pixar's MONSTERS UNIVERSITY continues for another week; its last night is Thursday. 

Don't forget that we do not have late shows on Thursday July 4th, and both early shows will be out in plenty of time to get to the fireworks. 

The next schedule is nearly done and will be on its way to you later this week.

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.  Starring Brad Pitt, directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace, Monster's Ball).  "May be the most entertaining and accomplished zombie thriller since George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Turns the prospect of the end of our world into something tumultuous and horrifying and, at the same time, exciting. It's scary good fun. [Reel Pizza] SCHEDULE June 14 - July 4

Hi Friends

Here is the next schedule...it is a little confusing because this time of year, as we play more first run films, the film studios start messing around, creating complications like Wednesday start dates and such.  AND we are still adjusting to the difficulties in booking due to the availability of a very low number of 35mm film prints as we enter the twilight of celluloid (sadly the sun has already set on film).   Doing the best we can, and don't hesitate to check the website, call, or email if you don't understand when something is playing! 

We have an open hole at the end of June from the Fri June 28th through Tuesday July 3.  We hope that we will be playing one of the films listed under COMING ON OUR SECOND SCREEN.  The end date of MONSTERS U depends on what comes next; the earliest last day of MONSTERS is Tues July 2; the latest last day is Thurs July 4.  You will be updated with this info when we have it figured out!

Also, PLEASE DON'T FORGET that on Thursday July 4, we will only have early shows of whatever is playing, both of which will be out in plenty of time for the evening's celebration...NO Later Shows during the fireworks, and nothing afterward either. 

Finally please notice the special programming.  On Sunday June 23 we will have the first installment of our Fourth Annual Sunday Summer Matinee Film Series sponsored by the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club.  The Sierra Club presents these films with speakers for free in order to get the public more engaged in topics of environmental importance. 

I just realized that this past Sunday was Reel Pizza's 18th birthday...Whoo Hoo!

Director Zach Snyder (Watchman, 300) gives this DC comic super hero a complete reboot in this BRAND NEW science fiction adventure story.  Henry Cavill plays the alien man Kal-El who was sent from Krypton to Earth by his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe) as a child and raised as Clark by humans Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane).  As a young man he learns of his extraordinary abilities and journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do, attracting the attention of the US Military and intrepid reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams).  When Earth is invaded by evil Kryptonite forces, he must summon his strength to save his world from annihilation.  trailer

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!   An excellent cast, including Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Bradley Cooper, and Ray Liotta combine with director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) in his second excellent film.  This original, provocative drama powerfully explores the consequences of stunt motorcycle rider Luke’s (Gosling) fateful decision to use crime to support his son.  This act leads him to be the target of a loser college dropout and rookie cop (Cooper).  Their encounter has a devastating impact on both of their families in the years following.  trailer

WAR WITCH  (NR)  90min  [in FRENCH and LINGALA with subtitles]  5:30 and 7:30

This Oscar-nominee and Best Canadian film winner from Montreal-based filmmaker Kim Nguyen is inspired by a story out of Burma but was filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  With discreet and rich observations he tells a story of a girl, with many others, kidnapped by rebels to become a child soldier. Pregnant fourteen year-old Komona (wonderfully played by former street child Rachel Mwanza) narrates, telling of her two year ordeal to her unborn child.  Poignant and harrowing but with light moments too, this unforgettable, impossible love story is filled with magic and picturesque images.  trailer

COMING ON OUR SECOND SCREEN?
FAST AND FURIOUS 6  (PG-13)  130min

This summer’s ultimate popcorn flick (at least so far)!  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris Bridges, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriquez return for another installment of this blockbuster franchise, where cars go very, very fast, the stunts and set pieces are beyond believable, and the story is secondary.  Luke Evans plays the bad guy the six friends are out to catch, so that they can be pardoned for previous crimes committed.  Director Justin Lin makes his fourth entry of the series, keeping things light and entertaining.  trailer

Matthew McConaughey (Bernie, Magic Mike) continues his string of acclaimed roles in this spellbinding coming-of-age story.  He plays a mysterious fugitive found by two boys who are exploring an island that contains a boat stuck up in a tree from a storm that they think will make a great fort.  Idealistic, romantic teen Ellis (Tye Sheridan) whose parents are divorcing, and his buddy and orphan Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) agree to help him when they discover he is waiting to escape with the love of his life (Reese Witherspoon).  Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) directs this homage to Huckleberry Finn.  trailer

Oscar-winning Danish director Susanne Bier (In a Better World), with her writing partner Anders Thomas Jensen, has made a sweet, poignant and authentic romantic dramady. Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm star as the grouchy widowed and estranged father of the groom and the ailing and recently separated mother of the bride whose lives come together at their childrens’ wedding at his country home in Sorrento Italy. The film print of SAPPHIRES continues to be delayed and it appears it
will not make the 8:00 show tonight either.

We will show PLACE BEYOND THE PINES at 5:30 and 8:15 instead. (Which is
a very good film if you missed it last weekend)

Keep your fingers crossed for its arrival for tomorrow's shows. I will
update Saturday when there is news. ...and sorry...

[Reel Pizza] SAPPHIRES cancellation

Bad news....

Our print of THE SAPPHIRES is unfortunately having some transportation
issues. As of right now, it isn't scheduled to be delivered until 6pm
tonight, which is too late for our first show.

So the 5:30 show of SAPPHIRES is CANCELLED!

In its place (for now, just replacing the early show) we will screen
PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (R) at 5:30.

We will re-evaluate what will happen with the later show depending on
the arrival of the SAPPHIRES print. I will send out another email
later this afternoon when we have more news. 42 will be screened at its
advertised times. I will also post this and any further information on
facebook.

Our apologies for all inconvenience. (Blame Andrea??) Back with you later.

E-greetings to all!

I would like to start by enthusiastically congratulating all of this year's MDI graduates, at the elementary, high school and college levels. HURRAH!  Go out into the world and do us proud!  

Time to plan your restorative nap....We have the season's first IMPROVISION on Friday night late!  This is the sixth(?) year of this fabulous collaborative event between the quick and funny folks at ImprovAcadia and Chris's ever expanding B-movie collection.  Come check out all the fun and be prepared to laugh out loud.

From Australia, this based on a true story follows a group of talented Aboriginal girl singers in the late 1960s who earn the opportunity to travel to Vietnam to entertain the US troops and learn about love, friendship and war.  Writer Tony Briggs used the story of his mom and three aunts to create the stage play that became this charming and joyous debut film from new director Wayne Blair.  Facing home-grown racism and romantic troubles too, three sisters who’ve been singing together since childhood enter a talent show run by a broken but kind and scruffy piano player (Chris O’Dowd, Bridesmaids).  He becomes these girls’ manager and encourages them to drop their maudlin country-western songs for exuberant soul and helps them find their first taste of stardom.  Sapphires Trailer

RENOIR  (R)  111min  [in FRENCH with subtitles]
This beautiful film from French director Gilles Bourdos is a sumptuous biography of the celebrated Impressionist painter Pierre August (Michel Bouquet) at the end of his life, his war-injured son and future silent filmmaker (The Grand Illusion) Jean (Vincent Rottiers) and the free-spirited, enchanting young model (Christa Theret) that enters both their lives and becomes an important figure for both.  Set on the French Riviera in 1915, her presence rejuvenates the elder Renoir, inspiring him in his final years to create some of his most famous works, and encourages the younger Renoir to explore his passion for the new medium of film.  Convicted, celebrated forger Guy Ribes recreates the famous artwork in this visually splendid film featuring cinematography by Mark Ping Bing Lee (In the Mood for Love).  Renoir Trailer
