Robert Redford gives a riveting and tremendous performance as a man alone in a 39-foot sailboat in the middle of the Indian Ocean who must fight for survival after an errant cargo container rips a hole in his boat’s hull. That is only the beginning of his tribulations which he deals with stoically and methodically. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB (R) 117min
Matt McConaughey continues his string of strong, indie performances (Bernie, Magic Mike, Mud) with his fierce and unforgettable portrayal of homophobic, redneck and free-wheeling cowboy Ron Woodruff. His world is turned upside down in 1985 with a diagnosis of AIDS and a one month life-expectancy. Ostracized by his friends and unhelped by the offered treatments, he takes matters into his own hands, tracking down alternatives which he shares with other HIV-positive outcasts. Adapting this true story, Québecois director Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y.) captures the helplessness and fear in the early days of this epidemic and the escapades of an unlikely champion. trailer

COMING ON OUR OTHER SCREEN?
12 YEARS A SLAVE (R) 134min
This exceptional and powerful film is an unflinching look at slavery in the US South in the mid-1800s. Based in part on his published memoirs, Soloman Northup (with a masterful portrayal by Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a free, educated Black man in upstate NY who makes a living as a musician. Lured to Washington DC with a promise of work, he is drugged, kidnapped, and sold as a slave, ending up on several plantations in Louisiana over the next dozen years. During his saga of survival, he fights to regain his dignity and his identity, determined to return to his family. Director Steve McQueen and screenwriter John Ridley have made a sobering masterpiece. This is the Golden Globe frontrunner in the drama category. trailer
SAVING MR BANKS (PG-13) 125min
In 1965, Disney’s now classic film Mary Poppins won 5 Oscars and was nominated for 8 others. But in 1961, Walt still didn’t have the rights to the P.L. Travers book, although he had been trying for two decades to fulfill a promise made to his daughters. This involving and delightful film follows the true story of the two weeks the persistent mogul (Tom Hanks) had to convince a curmudgeonly, uncompromising and reluctant, but also financially strapped writer (Emma Thompson) to allow him adapt her beloved story, when she had absolutely no intention of letting her magical nanny get abused by the Hollywood system. Director John Lee Hancock (The Blindside) has taken a fascinating bit of Hollywood history and created a charming and heartfelt story of family. trailer
AMERICAN HUSTLE (R) 138min
Set during Abscam, the 1970s FBI sting operation that brought down a US Senator and several Congressmen, director David O Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, Fight Club) has created a propulsively funny and sharp screwball entertainment that includes some factual events within a fictional story. Christian Bale and Amy Adams are savvy but low-level cons who get stung by an ambitious FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) who forces them to entrap a passionate political operator (Jeremy Renner) or go to jail. This is the frontrunner for the Golden Globe in the comedy category. trailer
PHILOMENA (PG-13) 98min
Based on a powerful true story, Judi Dench plays an elderly Irish-Catholic woman who decides to try and search for the son the church forced her to give up for adoption as an unwed teen on the occasion of what would be his fiftieth birthday. She meets a BBC investigative reporter (Steve Coogan) who reluctantly agrees to assist her, and they embark on what turns out to be a five year journey that follows an unexpected path. This affecting detective story with phenomenal performances comes from director Stephen Frears (The Queen). trailer
ANCHORMAN 2 (PG-13) 119min
As the 1970s give way to the 1980s, pompous buffoon Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) keeps it classy, returning to the news desk on the first 24-hour all-news cable network. He collects his old team, including brainless weatherman Brick (Steve Carell), stud reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), and racist sports guy Champ (David Koechner). Adam McKay directs another wacky, inspired episode full of slapstick and sheer silliness. trailer
