[Reel Pizza] update Feb 27 - Mar 5

hi everyone

...nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!  Come see Chris Rock's funny new movie this weekend if you are tired of digging and sliding and shoveling.

It looked like Oscah'Night was a great fun (although I was out of town and missed the festivities for the first time; my fabulous "new" Goodwill dress will have to wait till next year!), and word on the street is that Jen Shepard and Amy Roeder rocked the house.  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler had better watch out for some stiff competition!    Thanks to everyone, especially the library ladies, who made this year's gala event to benefit the Jesup Memorial Library a success!  The Islander listed the winners of the contests and posted some photos here.

This coming Saturday afternoon we have special programming.  Maine Farmland Trust and COA join us in co-sponsoring a free film GROWING LOCAL followed by discussion about the local food movement.  Film starts at 2:30, so doors will open at 2:00, discussion after the film.  Please join us!

I just realized that there was no trailer link for Clint Eastwood's AMERICAN SNIPER on the "schedule" email from last week, but it is included here, as it is our weeklong movie as well as next week's Senior Matinee.  See you soon!

Fri - Thurs    AMERICAN SNIPER (R) 134min   5:30 and 8:15
Fri - Mon    TOP FIVE  (R)  101min  6:00 and 8:30
Tues - Thurs    TRACKS  (PG-13)  110min  6:00 and 8:30

Fri 2/27 - Thurs 3/5
AMERICAN SNIPER (R) 134min   5:30 and 8:15
Director Clint Eastwood returns to the theater of war with his latest film, the story of a soldier who served in Iraq over 1000 days during four tours of duty.  Based on his memoir, Navy Seal Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook) holds the distinction of being the deadliest operative in US history.  More a western style film than a war movie, this apolitical film shows the physical and emotional price paid by those who fight to protect American lives.  Kyle, a true believer in his mission, finds his intensity follows him home to affect this relationship with his wife; he would feel more content in Fallujah, Ramada or Sadr City safekeeping his fellow soldiers, even as a price is put on his head by the enemy.  This film earned six Oscar nominations, for Best Picture, Actor and Adapted Screenplay, plus three for craft.  trailer

Fri 2/27 - Mon 3/2
TOP FIVE  (R)  101min  6:00 and 8:30
Funny man Chris Rock has made a very fun Woody Allen-esque romantic comedy.  Balancing love, comedy and introspection, this innovative day-in-the-life story has laughs which come from sharp observation.  He plays a NYC comedian who doesn't want to be known for funny anymore and, on this day, is opening a serious film, preparing for a reality show wedding, and is being shadowed by a reporter for the NYTimes (Rosario Dawson) which forces him to confront the past he's left behind.  trailer

Tues 3/3 - Thurs 3/5
TRACKS  (PG-13)  110min  6:00 and 8:30
The remarkable true story of an Australian woman, who in 1978 trekked solo across the outback, has been made into a poignant, riveting adventure starring Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre, Alice in Wonderland).  Robyn Davidson, accompanied by only her dog and four unpredictable pack camels, sets off from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean on a life-changing journey, the solitude only broken by few encounters with locals and several intermittent, and annoying, visits by a National Geographic photographer (Adam Driver), the price she has to pay for the organization's financial support.  It's a beautiful, exhilarating and elegant film.  trailer

Sat 2/28  GROWING LOCAL (NR) 2:30pm  FREE Co-sponsored with COA and Maine Farmland Trust we present a new film collaboration between MFT and Seedlight Pictures. The film points to the vibrancy and the growing pains of the local food movement in Maine, and the uncertain fate of the farmers and farmland that keep it alive. The film contains three short vignettes, each focuses on a different challenge hindering the growth of the local food movement, and points toward possible solutions.  The film will be followed by a community discussion. Fri 2/27 - Mon 3/2
TOP FIVE  (R)  101min

Funny man Chris Rock has made a very fun Woody Allen-esque romantic comedy.  Balancing love, comedy and introspection, this innovative day-in-the-life story has laughs which come from sharp observation.  He plays a NYC comedian who doesn't want to be known for funny anymore and, on this day, is opening a serious film, preparing for a reality show wedding, and is being shadowed by a reporter for the NYTimes (Rosario Dawson) which forces him to confront the past he's left behind.  trailer

Tues 3/3 - Thurs 3/5
TRACKS  (PG-13)  110min

The remarkable true story of an Australian woman, who in 1978 trekked solo across the outback, has been made into a poignant, riveting adventure starring Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre, Alice in Wonderland).  Robyn Davidson, accompanied by only her dog and four unpredictable pack camels, sets off from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean on a life-changing journey, the solitude only broken by few encounters with locals and several intermittent, and annoying, visits by a National Geographic photographer (Adam Driver), the price she has to pay for the organization's financial support.  It's a beautiful, exhilarating and elegant film.  trailer

Fri 3/6 - Mon 3/9
MR. TURNER  (R)  149min

The English romantic artist whose work anticipated the Impressionists, JMW Turner (Timothy Spall, winner of Cannes Best Actor prize) was an eccentric but in some ways an ordinary man, who was a master of light.  This fascinating portrait of this tireless artist at the pinnacle of his career is by master filmmaker Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Topsy Turvy) making a rare historical drama.  From his life with his beloved father and the housekeeper who loves him, to the seaside landlady with whom he resides at the end of his life, he is both celebrated and loathed by the public and aristocracy.  This superior historical recreation is an involving and rewarding film.   trailer

Tues 3/10 - Thurs 3/12
ANTARCTICA: A Year on the Ice  (PG)  92min

Stunningly beautiful, this entertaining documentary about the rare folks who overwinter in one of the harshest environments on Earth is from communications engineer turned filmmaker Anthony Powell.  He shot the footage over his ten winters in Antarctica, mostly at McMurdo station but also at others, and has a special affinity for spectacular time-lapse photography which evokes a sense of place.  Isolated from the rest of the world, the close-knit community of scientists, technicians and craftsmen endure both the beauty and brutality of a pristine wilderness most humans will never experience.   trailer

Fri 3/13 - Mon 3/16
BIG EYES  (PG-13)  106min

Director Tim Burton (Ed Wood) explores another kitschy artist with his entertaining, fascinating and funny film of this stranger than fiction true story.  The popular but also wildly reviled art style of waif-like children with extra-large eyes from the 1950s and 1960s made charming artist Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) one of that eras most successful painters, until it eventually came out that in fact the works had all been made by his lonely, cloistered wife Margaret (Amy Adams) and Walter was in fact just a con artist who took credit and gained international fame with his wife's work.   trailer

Tues 3/17 - Thurs 3/19
BLACK OR WHITE  (PG-13)  121min

Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer give excellent performances in this story of a custody battle for an interracial child.  The maternal grandfather, a well-to-do retiree, has been raising this beloved little girl with his wife after the death during childbirth of his daughter.  When his wife suddenly dies and he is left to care for her alone, the girl's paternal grandmother, a successful realtor in an impoverished area, seeks custody to raise her with her father's people, although he has never had a relationship with her.  This provocative, relevant and thoughtful film shows both the frustration and insight into the racial conundrum.  trailer

COMING ON OUR WEEK-LONG SCREEN?

AMERICAN SNIPER (R) 134min

BLACK SEA  (R)  115min

This suspenseful action thriller, well-directed by Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) centers on a laid-off Scottish salvage submarine captain (Jude Law) who pulls together a misfit crew of half Brits, including an excellent Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) as the master diver, and half Russians to go after a sunken Nazi treasure reputed to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea off Crimea.  As greed and desperation take control on their claustrophobic and perhaps unseaworthy vessel, these men turn on each other to fight for their own survival.  trailer

KINGSMAN: The Secret Service  (R)  100min

Colin Firth is quite dapper as a veteran spy in a super-secret organization charged with grooming a replacement for a fallen agent, an unrefined street kid (Taron Egerton).  His job becomes increasingly complicated by a villainous plot threatening the globe by an internet entrepreneur (Samuel L. Jackson).  Based on a graphic novel, this absurd but witty and thrillingly fun action comedy from director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) both spoofs and celebrates the James Bond franchise (also Jason Bourne).  trailer

THE REWRITE  (NR)  106min

Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei headline this enjoyable romantic comedy from director Marc Lawrence (Music and Lyrics) with easy-going charm.  He plays a one-time Oscar-winning screenwriter who has had a string of unsuccessful films.  His agent finds him a job as a guest professor at SUNY Binghamton; desperate for the work, he can't say no, but intends to give minimal effort so he can work on his next screenplay.  He doesn't expect to become involved with his student's lives, including a single mom starting her own new chapter.  Oscar-nominee JK Simmons is funny as the school dean, and Alison Janney is also great as the uptight department chair.   trailer
