[Reel Pizza] schedule

Good afternoon everyone!

We have arrived at one of our annual transition times. This schedule
takes us right up to Memorial Day weekend. Summer movies are already
starting up and many of our winter movie watchers are getting busy with
their warm weather activities away from and/or because of the hustle and
bustle of Vacationland in Bar Harbor. See you in the fall! We have fully
enjoyed sharing the dark months with everyone, including the senior
matinees and all the benefit screenings. We have more special events in
store for you over this summer, so stay tuned! Thanks for all your
support during this "locals time". We really enjoy hosting our friends
and neighbors whenever you can come and are glad to be able to provide a
relaxed community gathering spot for young and old alike when so much of
town is cold and dark. Be sure to put Reel Pizza on your "to-do" list
when company comes this summer; we will enjoy seeing a familiar face in
the crowd!

Here are the films for the Reel Pizza schedule which runs May 1 - 21.
Please notice that the first week is complete with times. See you soon!
-Lisa and Chris

*****************************

Friday May 1 - Thursday May 7
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE (PG-13) 107min 5:30 and 8:00
BRAND NEW! Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a movie superstar
– as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers,
retractable claws and a primal fury. A prequel to X-MEN, this new film
tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his
complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program.
Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new,
including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.
The summer movie season has begun!

Friday May 1 - Monday May 4
THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD (PG) 90min 6:00 and 8:15
Buck Howard (always fascinating John Malkovich) was once a famous,
flamboyant mentalist, an impressive hypnotist and somewhat corny
vaudeville entertainer, who now seems just eccentric. But he plays small
town venues with the same zeal he used to shower on Las Vegas and his many
Tonight Show appearances years ago. Troy (Colin Hanks) is a charming law
school dropout who, to the dismay of his father (Tom Hanks), becomes
Buck's assistant for the comeback tour believing it is his foot in the
showbiz door. Valerie (Emily Blunt, Sunshine Cleaning) is an aggressive
publicist hired to promote his return. Jon Stewart, Martha Stewart, Conan
O'Brien, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa all have cameos as themselves as
Buck warms their show's couches. This nostalgic, charming and funny
story, based on real events in the life of director and screenwriter Sean
McGinly, is sure to enchant.

Tues May 5 - Thursday May 7
ABSURDISTAN (NR) 88min [in Russian with subtitles] 6:00 and 8:15 This
whimsical, infectiously funny fairytale tells a story of a water shortage
and the resulting battle between the sexes. In a small, high desert
village (filmed in Azerbaijan) a rickety, ancient irrigation pipe finally
gives out, and the men are too lazy to fix it. So the women of the town
go on strike, withholding sex until the pipe is fixed. This is untimely
for young couple and childhood sweethearts Aya and Temelko, who have been
waiting for years for the astrologically chosen date of their marriage and
it is now only a few days off. But she believes her fiancée can prove his
love by solving the problem. Reminiscent of the silent films of Buster
Keaton, German filmmaker Veit Helmer (Tuvalu) has made an irresistible,
nearly dialogue free, and truly wonderful film.

*******************

Friday May 8 - Monday May 11
HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE (G) 102min
Miley Cyrus stars as Miley Stewart, a smart, nice, young (brunette)
California teen who leads an alternative life as singing pop-star princess
(blonde) Hannah Montana, like in Disney's TV show. But when Miley begins
to forget her roots and can't seem to shift between her two worlds, her
dad (Miley's real dad Billy Ray Cyrus) sends her home to Tennessee for
some detox. This Beverly Hills girl certainly feels out of place in the
small, home-town, rural community to start, but soon she finds a place to
fit in, with her family, her community, and the cute ranch hand, even as
she must try to avoid a nosy reporter. From director Peter Chelsom
(Funny Bones, Shall We Dance), this is a fun, clean film with some catchy
songs.

Tuesday May 12 - Thursday May 14
THE SECRET OF THE GRAIN (NR) 151min [in French and Arabic with subtitles]
This touching and resoundingly humanistic story set in the rustic port of
Sete in southeastern France introduces Slimane who has worked in the same
shipyard job for over 35 years when his growing dissatisfaction prompts
him to try to open his own restaurant. His dream seems unbelievable, but
his contagious conviction and persistence work their way into the hearts
of his loyal but dispersed family; the four children from his first
marriage, his ex-wife, current girlfriend and her bright, outspoken
daughter, Rym (played to great acclaim by the stunning newcomer Hafsia
Herzi). A grand film about ordinary people, this is a deliciously
slow-burning drama about fate, food and family.

*************************

Friday May 15 - Monday May 18
CHE (R) pt 1: 129min; pt 2: 128min [partly in Spanish with subtitles]
Steven Soderbergh's absorbing, epic biography stars Benico Del Toro as the
iconic grass-roots, guerilla revolutionary. Part one, adapted by Peter
Buchman from Che's "Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War," follows
the asthmatic leader and his compatriots including Fidel and Ramon Castro
as they travel to Cuba and successfully overthrow the US-supported Batista
regime. Part two, distilled from Che's Bolivian diaries by Buchman and
Benjamin vander Veen, runs from 1966 to his death in 1967 as Che tries to
repeat his Cuban success in Bolivia but doesn't receive the same reception
from the local people. Separate tickets sold for each part; both parts
will be shown once each evening divided by a 30min "intermission". You do
not have to watch both parts the same night.

Tuesday May 19 - Thursday May 21
EVERLASTING MOMENTS (NR) 131min [in Swedish with subtitles]
This rich, episodic film set a century ago follow the life of a woman
(Maria Heiskanen) who as a young woman wins a camera in a lottery, decides
to keep it, and that decision alters the course of her life. She marries
a dockworker whose alcoholism keeps them poor and makes her life as a
mother to their house full of children difficult. One day she decides to
sell the camera for food money, is persuaded to reconsider by the camera
shop owner, and discovers an artistic outlet she never realized she needed
and a financial independence she never expected. Directed by renowned
Swedish filmmaker Jan Troell (The Emigrant), and based on the life story
of his wife's great aunt, this inspiring film is an extraordinary portrait
of an accidental artist.

********************

COMING SOON ON OUR SECOND SCREEN?

STAR TREK (PG-13) 126min
There is loads of anticipation for this new film, full of action, comedy
and cosmic peril, in the venerable series. Directed by JJ Adams (Lost,
MI:3), this prequel tells the story of the beginnings of the Starship
Enterprise, the most advanced starship ever created. Thrill-seeking farm
boy, James Kirk, and half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock who was raised in a
world devoid of all emotion are bitter rivals but they must tame their
rivalry, making a powerful partnership to lead their crew through
unimaginable dangers as they fight an evil that threatens all mankind.
Live Long and Prosper!

STATE OF PLAY (PG-13) 127min
With an all-star cast, this blistering political thriller from director
Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) finds journalists and
politicians alternately back-scratching and back-stabbing. Ben Affleck is
an up-and-coming Congressman destined to be the party's next presidential
nominee. At least, he is until his assistant, and mistress is murdered.
Robin Wright Penn is his long-suffering wife. Russell Crowe is an
investigative journalist trying to untangle a string of murders. Rachel
McAdams is an ambitious blogger who assisting the investigation, whether
he wants her help or not, and Helen Mirrin is the beleaguered newspaper
editor who needs the story on time and within budget. Written by Tony
Gilroy (Michael Clayton) and Billy Ray (Shattered Glass) based on a BBC
television series, this is an intelligent look into the current state of
print journalism and the power struggle and intrigue of Congress that
doesn't flinch.

SUNSHINE CLEANING (R) 91min
A single mom and her slacker sister find an unexpected way to turn their
lives around in this off-beat dramatic comedy. Desperate to get her young
son into a better school, Rose (Amy Adams, Enchantment) convinces her
younger sister (Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada), who still lives at
home with their always scheming Dad (Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine),
into going into business together in the crime scene cleanup business.
This spirited and uplifting film about an average family that finds the
path to its dreams in an unlikely setting, directed by Christine Jeffs
(Sylvia), is heartfelt and totally entertaining.

EARTH (G)
Combining rare action, unimaginable scale and impossible locations while
capturing the most intimate moments of our planet's wildest and most
elusive creatures, this first film from Disneynature tells the remarkable
stories of three animal families and their amazing journeys across our
planet. The creative team behind the "Planet Earth" series follows polar
bears in the Arctic, elephants in Africa's Kalahari Desert, and humpback
whales in the southern ocean. Additionally the filmmakers encounter other
creatures, caribou, grey wolves, lions, cheetahs, great white sharks,
baboons, and mandarin ducks among others. The spectacular footage
combined with a vital ecological message makes for a provocative,
transfixing film for all.

We have special programming at Reel Pizza this coming weekend. On Sunday
April 26th at 2pm, the Bar Harbor Conservation Commission is sponsoring a
screening of ADDICTED TO PLASTIC, with ticket proceeds being donated to
Allied Whale at College of the Atlantic. This is a smart, funny and
illuminating documentary exploring plastic pollution around the world over
its 100 year existence. It also offers a wealth of expert, cutting edge
solutions to recycling, toxicity, and biodegradability, ending with a
hopeful perspective and many fun and simple solutions to combat this
invasive problem. Following the film will be a discussion. Help and
celebrate our planet, at the same time. See you then!

and our regular films for this weekend are...

Friday April 24 - Thursday April 30
ADVENTURELAND (R) 107min 6:00 and 8:15
It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg, The Squid and
the Whale), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his
dream tour of Europe. But when his parents announce they can no longer
subsidize his trip, James unenthusiastically takes a lowly job at a local
amusement park. His summer will now be populated by belligerent dads,
stuffed pandas, and screaming kids high on cotton candy. Luckily, what
should have been his worst summer ever turns into quite an adventure as he
discovers love in the most unlikely place with his captivating co-worker
(Kristen Stewart, Twilight), and learns to loosen up. This new film was
written and directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad) based on his own
experiences.

Friday April 24 - Monday April 27
RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN (PG) 98min 5:30 and 7:45
Fun and engaging, this latest live-action Disney release is a
science-fiction adventure that only loosely resembles the original 1975
film. Dwayne Johnson (Game Plan) is a Las Vegas cabbie with a shady past
who picks up two teens (AnnaSophia Robb, Bridge to Terebithia, and
Alexander Ludwig) who are actually aliens from another world with
extraordinary superpowers. Chased by a variety of villains both human and
extraterrestrial, they team up with a discredited physicist (Carla Gugino)
who tries to help the kids return to their home and maybe also save the
Earth at the same time.

Tuesday April 28 - Thursday April 30
THE CAKE EATERS (NR) 95min 5:30 and 7:45
Actress Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes) makes her feature
directorial debut with a quirky and textured small town drama that
explores the lives of two interconnected families as they confront old
ghosts and discover love in the face of devastating loss. This
intricately woven and powerfully poignant film features a standout
performance by Kristen Stewart (Twilight) as a teenager who finds love
with a shy young man named Beagle, while her grandmother continues a
long-time romance with Beagle's father (Bruce Dern) after his wife dies.
This rewarding independent film with its excellent ensemble cast is full
of delightful small moments that elevate it into the sweet, intelligent
film that it is.

Friday April 17 - Thursday April 23
MONSTERS VS. ALIENS (PG) 94min 5:30 and 7:30
When a California girl (Reese Witherspoon) is unwittingly clobbered by a
meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows
to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is captured and secreted away to a covert
government compound where she is renamed Ginormica and placed in
confinement with a ragtag group of other monsters. Their confinement is
cut short, however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and
begins storming the country, and the President is persuaded to enlist
these motley monsters to combat it to save the world from imminent
destruction. With an all-star vocal cast, including Steve Colbert,
Keifer Sutherland, Will Arnett, Seth Rogan and Rainn Wilson, this family
friendly animated film is very witty and visually delightful.

Friday April 17 - Monday April 20
TAKEN (PG-13) 91min 6:00 and 8:00
Liam Neeson (Kinsey) stars in this riveting, entertaining revenge thriller
from screenwriter Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Transporter) and
cinematographer turned director Pierre Morel (District B-13). Neeson is
unexpectedly great as a former CIA secret agent and divorced dad who
retired into doing special security jobs so he could spend more time with
his teenaged daughter. She finagles an unsupervised trip to Europe with
her girlfriend, but upon their arrival in Paris, they are promptly
abducted. Dad's particular skills are essential to finding them before
they are sold into an Albanian sex-slave ring and lost forever. It's a
briskly-paced, adrenaline-fueled action adventure and a perfectly mindless
popcorn flick.

Tuesday April 21 - Thursday April 23
CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC (PG) 104min 6:00 and 8:15
Director PJ Hogan (Muriel's Wedding, My Best Friend's Wedding) has turned
the two best-selling novels by Sophia Kinsella into an infectious,
screwball fantasy-romantic comedy. Comic actress Isla Fisher (Wedding
Crashers) is Rebecca, a charming young woman who loves buying designer
clothes, but isn't exactly paying for them out of cash flow. She dreams
of a job writing for a fashion magazine, but instead lands a column at a
struggling financial magazine dispensing financial advice, which turns her
into an instant celebrity despite her lack of appropriate skills. She
begins to fall for her boss (Hugh Dancy), but her compulsive habits could
ruin her career and her new romance.

more terrific French film continues through Thursday with THE CLASS, which
plays Tues - Thurs at 5:30 and 8:00. And if French film isn't your thing,
you might enjoy I LOVE YOU MAN through Thursday at 6:00 and 8:15.
Starting on Friday we will offer an entirely new slate of films. We hope
you find something you like.

See you soon
-Lisa

Friday 4/10 - Thursday 4/16
DUPLICITY (PG-13) 125min 5:30 and 8:00
Screenwriter (of the Bourne series) and director Tony Gilroy follows up
his multi-Oscar-nominated directing debut, Michael Clayton, with a smart,
lighthearted and funny spies-in-love romantic thriller. His sharp,
articulate dialog is excellently presented by Julia Roberts and Clive Owen
(both in Closer). They play former government operatives with a shared
history, now working for competing pharmaceutical companies; one CEO
highly covets a super-secret personal care formula developed by the other.
Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson are both hilarious as the rival corporate
tycoons. When these two loners find themselves embroiled in a high-stakes
espionage game, they discover the toughest part of the job is deciding how
much to trust the one you love.

Friday 4/10 - Monday 4/13
REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (R) 119min 6:00 and 8:30
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio stars as husband and wife in this
powerful story of 1950's suburban dysfunction, directed by her husband Sam
Mendes (American Beauty). Based on the celebrated 1961 novel by Richard
Yates, this young urban couple meets at a party, fall in love, get
married, move to Connecticut and start a family. On the outside, they
seem to have the perfect house, family and marriage, and their realtor
(Kathy Bates) introduces them to her mentally unstable son (Michael
Shannon) as an example of normalcy. But underneath, he hates his
meaningless desk job and she feels trapped as a mother and housewife.
Then she comes up with a plan to give it all up and move the family to
Paris. This is a riveting film with remarkable performances whose meaning
still has resonance today.

Tuesday 4/14 - Thursday 4/16
TWO LOVERS (R) 108min 6:00 and 8:15
Set in an insular Brooklyn neighborhood, this classic romantic drama,
directed by James Grey (Little Odessa) is elegant and genuine. Joaquin
Phoenix (Walk the Line), reportedly in his final acting role, gives a raw
and vulnerable performance as a charismatic but troubled young man who has
moved back home following a recent heartbreak. While recovering under his
parent's watchful eyes (Isabella Rossellini and Moni Monoshov), Leonard
soon meets two women: a mysterious and beautiful neighbor (Gwyneth
Paltrow) who is exotic and out-of-place in Leonard's staid world, and the
lovely and caring daughter of a businessman who is buying out his family's
dry-cleaning business (Vinessa Shaw). Leonard struggles with his
impossible decision – between the impetuousness of desire and the comfort
of love without falling back into the darkness that nearly killed him.

This gripping action-thriller of global proportions follows a professor
(Nicholas Cage) who stumbles on terrifying predictions about the
future—and sets out to prevent them from coming true. He makes the

capsule predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and
coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As he further
unravels the document's chilling secrets, he realizes the document
foretells three additional events—the last of which hints at destruction
on a global scale and seems to somehow involve himself and his son. After
attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he undertakes a heart
pounding race to try to prevent more destruction from taking place.

[Reel Pizza] update

hi everyone,

here is the schedule of films at Reel Pizza from Friday April 3 - Thursday
April 9. I am using a different email program at present and can't figure
out how to BOLD items like the titles and times, so just read carefully;
there is lots of information associated with the weekend's French film
festival. The new schedule will be coming to you in just the amount of
time it takes me to type it in (without losing it in the process). Wish
me luck, and hope to see you soon.

-Lisa

of disastrous man-dates before he unexpectedly meets his complete opposite
(Segel), a slacker with a man-cave. They form an unlikely bond over a
shared love of fish tacos and the band Rush, and all is well until the
bride-to-be gets a little jealous.

Tues 4/7 - Thurs 4/9
THE CLASS (PG-13) 128min [in FRENCH with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00
Skillfully blending documentary and dramatic fiction, French director
Laurent Cantet (Time Out) has made an honest, alive and totally engrossing
film. Based on the autobiographical book "Between The Walls" by
schoolteacher François Bégaudeau this 2008 Palme d'Or winner at Cannes and
Oscar-nominee follows a charismatic teacher (played by Bégaudeau) at a
multi-cultural junior high school in a lower income Parisian neighborhood
over the course of a year. This ethnically diverse group of poor, mainly
immigrant teens has a hard time understanding the benefit of learning the
fine points of French grammar he tries to teach them, and although he is
on their side, these students challenge him, and the teacher does not
always win.
