[Reel Pizza] schedule May 4 - May 24

hi all - Happy May Day!  And here's a new schedule of movies for your viewing pleasure.  We have three special programs coming up soon, a weekend matinee fundraiser with the inimitable Underwater Superheroes and their vacation photos, a visiting filmmaker screening, and an inaugural weekend event, a Wildlife Film Festival featuring films from all around the globe; they all look quite wonderful.  And we start booking some first run films, beginning right off with MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS (the early reviews from across the pond are that it is quite fun), starting this Friday for a week, and returning later in the month for a revisit.  It is all laid out below.  Stay in touch and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Presentation and Benefit for Fiji School Children
Free, with donations gratefully accepted. This past winter Diver Ed, Captain Evil and 18 other Underwater Superheroes from MDI went on a mission to explore the Astrolabe Reef, off the island of Kadavu, Fiji. They enjoyed amazing diving, but they really fell in love with the place and the people. While visiting the local school, the group wanted to raise money to help them replace their UNICEF tent with a schoolroom. There will be photos, videos and discussion. Most of all it will be a BLAST!

Monday May 14  7:30
Visiting Filmmaker Presentation: CONSUMING SPIRITS  (NR) 130min
Nearly 15 years in the making, Chris Sullivan's new film is a meticulously constructed tour de force of experimental animation. Shooting frame by frame in 16mm, he seamlessly blends together a range of techniques—cutout animation, pencil drawing, collage, and stop-motion animation—into a distinct, signature visual style. In the process, he constructs a hypnotic, layered narrative, a suspenseful gothic tale that tracks the intertwined lives of three kindred spirits working at a local newspaper in a Midwestern rust belt town.  This film officially premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last week.  Presented by COA.

Fri May 4 - Thurs May 10 (returning May 18 - 25)
MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS  (PG-13)  143min  5:30 and 8:30
This highly anticipated film brings together Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America and friends (including Nick Fury and Black Widow) to save the world from Loki, Thor’s bitter brother who has stolen the Tesseract, a blue cube that gives its bearer unlimited power and a portal to outer-space.  Director/screenwriter Joss Whedon (Thor, Serenity) deftly balances all these superheroes, giving each a time to shine while also having a lot of smart and fast-paced fun with the story.

Fri May 4 - Mon May 7
MIRROR MIRROR
  (PG)  106min  6:00 and 8:15

This fresh and fun retelling of the Snow White fairy tale features Lily Collins as the princess in exile, and Julia Roberts as her evil Queen step-mother who ruthlessly rules the kingdom with the help of her hapless and bungling servant (Nathan Lane). Seven courageous rebel dwarfs join forces with Snow White as she fights to reclaim her birthright and win her Prince (Armie Hammer, Social Network) in this visually beautiful and silly comedy filled with jealousy, romance, betrayal and magnificent costumes.

Tues May 8 - Thurs May 10
THE KID WITH A BIKE (PG-13)  87min  [in French with subtitles]
6:00 and 8:00
This powerful and hopeful film, and last year’s Cannes Grand Jury Prize-winner from Belgian brother-directors Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (Lorna’s Silence, Rosette) is a memorable portrait of a troubled youth and the charity of strangers.  Eleven year old Cyril (Thomas Doret) cannot believe his father (Jérémie Renier) has really abandoned him to the orphanage.  Escaping, he uses his freedom to search for his missing bike, which he believes will lead him to his father.  By total accident, he meets a kind local hairdresser (Cécile de France) who becomes a fairy god-mother to him, determined to help.  But she soon learns Cyril’s unpredictable behavior threatens their relationship.

Fri May 11 - Mon May 14
SALMON FISHING IN YEMEN (PG-13)  112min
Whimsical and offbeat, this smart romantic comedy from director Lasse Hallström (Cider House Rules, Chocolat) tells the story, adopted from Paul Torday’s debut novel by Simon Beaufoy (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire), of a wealthy sheik (Amr Waked) from Yemen who loves to fly fish in Scotland who directs his investment consultant to create an opportunity for people to participate in this activity in his home country.  Ewan McGregor plays the skeptical fisheries biologist drafted to make it happen, after the prime minister’s Press Secretary (Kirstin Scott Thomas) decides this would make a wonderful diversion to all the war news.

Tues May 15 - Thurs May 17
THE SOUND OF NOISE (R)  102min [in Swedish with subtitles]
Part police procedural, part romance, part musical, this absurdist Swedish comedy follows a team of guerrilla percussionists, using unconventional implements as instruments (think Blue Men Group or Triplets of Belleville soundtrack) who commit illegal acts in order to make music.  This ragtag group is investigated by an uptight police officer who, despite being born into a family of famous musicians, is tone deaf, and they don’t let him forget it.  This makes him cranky, as does having to investigate and track down these anarchists.  A work in four movements from co-directors Ola Simonsson and Johannes Stjärne Nilsson, this is silly, crowd-pleasing fun.

Tues May 22 - Thurs May 24
JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI (PG)  81min [in Japanese with subtitles]
6:00 and 8:00
Eighty-five year old Jiro Ono, whose unassuming, 10-seat sushi restaurant, located inauspiciously in a Tokyo subway station yet earned a coveted 3 star Michelin review, is considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef.  This humble man has spent his entire life dedicated to the perfection of his craft, a never-ending quest for simplicity that indicates true purity.   Filmmaker and sushi lover David Gelb’s delightful documentary is not just absolutely beautiful food porn, but it also examines the life of this singular man, a living treasure in Japan, and his effect on his two sons, the younger off running his own restaurant, the elder still apprenticed to his father waiting to take over the family business.

Coming Soon on our other screen?

THREE STOOGES (PG) 91min
The latest from brother directors Bobby and Larry Farrelly (Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary) is a heartfelt and perfectly executed tribute to the mid-20 th century dysfunctional trio of clowns and their convoluted mix of slapstick, punny vaudeville routines, and comic absurdity.  Divided into three episodes, much like their original short films, the stories follow Larry, Curley and Moe, troublemakers from an early age, at their home at the orphanage, and then out into the world when they must raise money to save the only home they have ever known from foreclosure.  Chris Diamantopoulos, Will Sasso and Sean Hayes fully inhabit their roles in this genuinely funny homage to these screen icons.

DARK SHADOWS  (PG-13)  113min
Director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp reteam for another sure-to-be wacky film (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland). Depp stars as Barnabas Collins, arrived in America in 1752 with his parents and settling in Collinsport, Maine.  But this rich, powerful playboy makes the grave mistake of breaking the heard of Angelique Bouchard, a witch, who turns him into a vampire and buries him alive.  He is inadvertently freed from his tomb two centuries later and finds his once grand estate in disrepair and the remnants of his family dysfunctional and harboring secrets of their own. Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller and Chloe Moretz co-star.
