High Summer has arrived! Wow! Here is the schedule for July. Lots going
on. New Art in the Lobby, ImproVision, the next in the Sierra Club film
series, the last HARRY POTTER film...can't get much more exciting than
this.
For those who might be interested, we want you to be aware that, while we
WILL have HARRY POTTER on its opening, we WILL NOT be having a midnight
screening...we are just too small to accommodate even a fraction of those
who hope to get a seat (where is Arthur Weasley with his special enlarging
charm when you need him?) Last time was awful with way too many angry
people who didn't get in. But to compensate, we will be screening three
times a day. Tickets go on sale Friday (7/15) afternoon...we will try to
open the box office a little early and will sell tickets for any of that
evenings shows, like usual. Thanks for understanding.
See you soon~ swimming at the lake? Blueberry picking? ice cream
eating? parade watching? on the trail? SFOA? or maybe even at the
movies!!
-Lisa and Chris
ps oops I thought I sent this last week! Sorry...

NEW ART IN THE LOBBY
Jennifer Booher, Bar Harbor
"For the last year I have been obsessed with photographing things I find
while beachcombing. The photos look vaguely scientific, with echos of
pressed botany specimens and Linnean classification diagrams, but the
logic behind these assemblages is my curiosity about their components.
Beachcombing is fundamentally a treasure hunt, an emotional and
old-fashioned form of exploration that depends on serendipity, suspense,
and glee. To make sense of the things I find, I reference marine biology,
glass-making history, geology, chemistry, climate, oceanography, local
settlement and use patterns ... If science is a method of finding answers,
these photos are my way of framing the questions."

SIERRA CLUB SUMMER FILM SERIES
Sunday July 10 2pm FREE
MONUMENTAL: David Brower's Fight For Wild America (NR) 80min
From the moment David Brower first witnessed the extraordinary beauty of
Yosemite Valley, his life was tied to the fight to preserve the American
wilds for future generations. Not since John Muir has an American fought
so hard, or been more successful in protecting our natural heritage. This
beautiful film explores the dramatic allure of the story of Brower's and
his colleagues' unrelenting campaigns -- through lobbying, art, and
hard-hitting advertising -- to protect and establish some of our most
treasured national parks. Ken Cline, Rockefeller Environmental Professor
at COA who has worked with Brower, will speak.
* The Sierra Club offers these films at no charge to get people focused on
the environment. This is the second in a series of four films this
summer.

IMPROVISION Sunday July 17 (oops, on the printed schedule it says Friday)
Its Back! And Better than ever! Check out our occasional, wacky
collaboration with the talented crew of ImprovAcadia. With the sound
turned off, this ever-changing group of up and coming comedians improvise
the dialogue, music tracks, and sound effects to a cheesy grade-B movie
THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE! Their talents make the pictures on the
screen way funnier than they were ever anticipated. It's a totally new
show every time. Don't miss out on all the FUN.

Friday July 8 - Thursday July 14
LARRY CROWNE (PG-13) 99min 5:30 and 7:45
Tom Hanks has written, directs and stars in this sweet dramatic comedy
about a downsized middle-aged man who is unclear on what to do with his
suddenly free days. Unable to find new work, he heads to his local
college to start over and becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts
and misfits all trying to find a better future. Unexpectedly he develops
a crush on his cranky public speaking professor (Julia Roberts, his
co-star in CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR).
Friday July 8 - Monday July 11
THE HANGOVER PART II (R) 102min 6:00 and 8:15
The wolfpack reunites, this time in Thailand, for Stu's wedding to Lauren.
Barely recovered from the last bachelor party, Stu (Ed Helms) decides
that he, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zach Galifianakis), Doug (Justin
Bartha), and Lauren's innocent, studious teenaged brother (Mason Lee, son
of Ang) will celebrate at a safe and sedate beachside picnic. Needless to
say, things don't go as planned, and the next morning they wake up in a
squalid hotel room, and someone is missing. Returning director Todd
Philips keeps his winning formula and most excellent cast, making another
all-out hilarious adult comedy.
Tuesday July 12 - Thursday July 14
CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS (G) 90min 6:00 and 8:00
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND In 2D. Intrepid and always fascinating filmmaker
Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World,
Fitzcarraldo) takes part in an extraordinary and exclusive expedition into
a nearly inaccessible and only recently discovered cave in southern
France, home to some of the most ancient visual art known to have been
created by man. This unforgettable, beautiful documentary provides a
unique glimpse of pristine, sophisticated artwork, made by humans of the
creatures of the forest, including bison, cave-bears and woolly mammoths,
over 30,000 years ago; the cave was blocked by a rockslide some 20,000
years ago.

Friday July 15 - Thursday July 28
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 (PG-13) 118min 5:00, 7:30
and 10:00
in 2D At long last, we have arrived at the final adventure of this
amazing series. Young wizard Harry and his friends including Ron,
Hermione, Neville, Luna, Ginny, Fred and George are fighting the evil
forces of their world led by Lord Voldemort, and it is all out war now.
The stakes have never been higher and Harry Potter himself may be called
on to make the ultimate sacrifice as the climactic showdown with his enemy
approaches. If you don't know how this all ends yet, you really should
hunker down and read the books…
Friday July 15 - Monday July 18
BRIDESMAIDS (R) 125min 5:30 and 8:15
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND This female-centric adult comedy stars Kristen
Wiig (SNL, Knocked Up) as a woman whose life is on a downward spiral. Her
bakery has just fallen victim to the recession, her boyfriend isn't really
very nice, and now her oldest, best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is
engaged to be married. But she has asked her to be the maid of honor.
Even though she is broke and lovelorn, she does her best to fulfill her
obligations, while worrying that another bridesmaid, Lillian's fiancé's
boss's wife, is trying to take over her place as Lillian's best friend and
most important attendant. Each event escalates the comedy and the
conflict as the big day draws nearer. This is the last screen role for
the late Jill Clayburgh. Judd Apatow produced, and Paul Feig (co-creator
of Freaks and Geeks) directs.
Tuesday July 19 - Thursday July 21
WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (PG-13) 115min 5:30 and 8:15
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND Rob Pattinson (Twilight), Reese Witherspoon (Walk
the Line) and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) star in this brand
new adaptation of the best-selling novel by Sara Gruen, directed by
Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend). The story follows a young veterinary
student who, after the deaths of his parents, takes a job caring for the
animals in a travelling circus full of freaks and misfits, and falls in
love with the star performer of the show through their compassion for a
particular elephant, even though she is married to the charismatic but
dangerous animal trainer.

Friday July 22 - Monday July 25
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13) 94min 6:00 and 8:15
The City of Lights in three separate eras is the setting for Woody Allen's
latest literate gem, a charming and engaging romantic comedy that muses on
nostalgia. Owen Wilson stars as Gil, a hack screenwriter who is working
on but unsatisfied with his first novel. He and his irritable fiancée
(Rachel McAdams) have travelled to Paris with her parents for a vacation.
While he revels ins the artistic history surrounding them (he yearns to
have lived in the Jazz Age of the 1920s), she has plans to shop. One
night out for a walk alone, he is invited by a costumed American couple in
a stylish old car to a party and the magic begins.
Tuesday July 26 - Thursday July 28
INCENDIES (R) 130min [in FRENCH & ARABIC with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:15
When a notary sits down with grown twins Jeanne and Simon to read them
their mother's will, they are stunned to each receive an envelope to
deliver. Hers is to the father they thought was dead and his is to a
brother they never knew existed. Thus begins the unraveling of the
secrets of their mother's life. Through a trip to the Middle East, they
piece together the tragic story of a courageous woman. Adapting the hit
play by Lebanese/Canadian Wajdi Mouawad who used his homeland's 1970's
conflict between militant Christians and Muslims as inspiration, Québécois
director Denis Villeneuve has made a deeply moving and poetic testament to
the uncanny power of the will to survive. This film was one of this
year's Oscar nominees for Best Foreign Film.
