[Reel Pizza] Schedule July 30 - Aug 19

Summer greetings

Here is a rundown of what is going on at Reel Pizza from July 30 - Aug 19th.  First I have two special programs with special guest speakers to tell you about, and we will be offering another edition of ImproVision, and of course, more summer -time movies.  One note is that all the regular films on this schedule will screen for full weeks (Fri - Thurs) and of the three titles that haven't opened yet, at least two will be brand new when they screen at Reel Pizza.  Hope you find something to entice you in to our air-conditioned comfort.

See you soon!

SPECIAL EVENTS
Saturday August 7th
PLANTING HOPE   25min    1:00 and 3:00pm   $5 donation
Learn how one small Surry, Maine-based non-profit organization, Sustainable Harvest International, is alleviating poverty and deforestation in Central America. Planting Hope is a short-documentary that captures life in rural Honduras from the perspectives of SHI field trainer, Juan Carlos, and participant farmer, Don Cheyo as they talk about sustainable farming. SHI's mission is to provide farming families in Central America with the training and tools to preserve tropical forests while overcoming poverty. In Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Belize, they work one-on-one, hands-on, with individual families and communities for a period of typically five years to teach them how to grow crops in a sustainable and organic way that will allow them to access plenty of vegetables and achieve economic stability through the commercialization of cash crops, like cacao and coffee. Planting Hope highlights their work to implement sustainable land-use practices and a Honduran farmer's achievements after working with them.

SHI Founder/President Florence Reed will give a brief overview of this group's work and answer any questions following the documentary.

A SENSE OF WONDER 55min  2pm   free
Rachel Carson's 1963 warnings about the effects of pesticides and herbicides - especially DDT - sparked a revolution in environmental policy and created a new ecological consciousness.   This American Experience documentary, filmed in Maine on location at Carson's cabin, follows this pioneering activist's last year of life when "Silent Spring" was published and she was attacked by the chemical industry and the government, even as she waged her own war against the cancer in her own body.  Using many of Rachel Carson's own words, both humorous and angry, screenwriter and star Kaiulani Lee embodies this extraordinary woman, her love for the natural world and her fight to defend it.

Miss Lee will introduce the film at the screening and take questions afterwards.   The Sierra Club offers this for no charge to get people focused on the environment.

EVENING FILMS:

Fri July 30 -  Thurs Aug 5

CYRUS  (R)  91min   6:00 and 8:30
With a touching and original story that blends humor and heartbreak, incisive writer/director brothers Mark and Jay Duplass (The Puffy Chair) have entered the mainstream.  Their insightful and funny look at love and family in contemporary LA stars John C. Reilly (Walk Hard) as a divorcee who finally after seven years alone meets the woman of his dreams (Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler).  But when she is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond his house, he discovers she has another man in her life, her sneakily meddlesome 21 year-old son (Jonah Hill, Get Him to the Greek) who is mom's best friend and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone.  Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love - and it appears only one man can be left standing when it's over.

DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS (PG-13)  114min     5:30 and 8:00
Hollywood succeeds well in remaking French director Francis Veber's winning comedy The Dinner Game into a crowd-pleasing hit of its own.  This screwball comedy tells the story of Tim (Judd Apatow regular Paul Rudd), a professional guy on the verge of having it all. The only thing standing between him and total career success is finding the perfect guest to bring to his boss' annual Dinner for Extraordinary People, an event he participates in reluctantly, where the evening's winner brings the most eccentric character. Enter Barry (Steve Carell, Date Night), a loser guy with a passion for dressing mice up in tiny outfits to recreate great works of art. From director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Austin Powers) it is an unforgettable feast about two unlikely friends and one very memorable dinner.

SALT (PG-13)  100min   5:30 and 8:00
This exciting, stylish and presciently timely action-spy thriller directed by Phillip Noyce (The Quiet American, Patriot Games) stars Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt.  Doing her own stunts in professionally crafted action sequences (not computer-generated), she plays a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor and country, but her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian sleeper spy.  Salt goes on the run, chased by a conservative CIA counterintelligence officer (Chjwetel Ejiofor), using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture.  Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives and her supportive boss (Liev Schreiber) becomes slowly convinced he's been had.  The hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who Is Salt?"

and

THE OTHER GUYS  (PG-13)  107min    6:00 and 8:30
NYC Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) is a meticulous forensic accountant who's more interested in and accurate with paperwork than he'd ever be hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) is a tough guy who has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since an unfortunate run-in with NY Yankee Derek Jeter left a sizable black mark on his permanent record. Gamble and Hoitz idolize the city's top cops, confident, stylish and always successful Highsmith and Danson (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson), but when an opportunity arises for Gamble and Hoitz to prove their mettle, things don't quite go as planned.  Directed by Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights) this buddy police comedy is sure to shine.
