Here we go, it is the last schedule until Christmas...
We have new, gorgeous Lobby Art by local resident Elizabeth Somers. There
will be two special programs coming up, one a fundraiser for the high
school Gay Straight Alliances of Northern Maine with presentations by
local students as well as a film; the other is a screening of a story of
reconciliation and a moving tribute to veterans (of WW2) in honor of the
upcoming Veteran's Day holiday, presented by Masanobu Ikemiya and several
local Peace organizations. Please join us if you can.
Of course, we encourage you to get Reel Pizza gift certificates or Big
Tickets to give to your friends and family over the holidays. It is
something that they will enjoy, will help them through the long dark

Finally, our closing night is Monday November 7th. Chris and I are
leaving town for a couple of weeks to recharge (southern Utah via
Cleveland), but will be returning in early December (Colin will be holding
down the fort while we are away) and we plan to reopen on Monday December
26th at 4:30, like usual "for the season". We thank you one and all for
your support, patronage, suggestions, and kind words over this year, and
we look forward to returning refreshed and ready to spend another winter
here at home with our friends and neighbors, presenting a wide variety of
films both obscure and highly popular, special programming, fundraisers,
Senior matinees and other fun things. We couldn't do this without you!

Art in the Lobby ELIZABETH SOMERS Bar Harbor
Delight in the beauty found in everyday objects drives the selection of
subjects for my paintings. Celebrating the prismatic complexity of color
found in the illuminated surface of a handful of fruit, finding whimsy and
personality in a piece of antique furniture, these are discoveries that
fill me with surprise and inspiration. Oil pastels, by virtue of their
creamy consistency and rich depth of color lend themselves to layering of
colors beautifully, re-working with a brush and solvent or scratching away
color to achieve a sgraffito effect. This combination of techniques allows
me to create images that can glow, vibrate and, hopefully bring the viewer
a feast for the eyes.

FUNDRAISER MATINEE: OUT IN THE SILENCE (NR)
When you marry, you put an announcement in your hometown paper but if you
are gay, it's not quite so simple. Film makers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer
returned to Joe's small hometown to investigate the hate their wedding
announcement generated. One individual who welcomed them was the mother of
a gay teenager who had to leave the local public school to escape bullying
after he came out. There is conflict and confrontation, but also, in its
way, resolution in this thoughtful film. This showing is a fundraiser to
support high school Gay Straight Alliances in Northern Maine sponsored by
the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network and includes student voice
presentations, an art show by MDI High students, and a live short play by
Sumner students. Come out and support GLSEN in creating a safer community
for all! There will also be a raffle of copies of the movie. $10 for
adults and $2 for students.

SPECIAL SCREENING: THE RAILROAD OF LOVE (NR) [in Japanese w/ subtitles]
Highlighting veteran's struggles after war, this wonderful documentary
tells the story of an Australian Catholic priest who led reconciliation
efforts between Australians and Japanese after WWII. Father Tony Glynn
showed unflagging generosity toward those stricken by poverty after the
war and, in the spirit of reconciliation and friendship, supported
Australia-Japan civilian associations towards that end. In depicting
Father Glynn's attempt to reconcile and re-create friendship between
former foes, including various historical footage from the period, this
documentary is a moving account of the history of Father Tony Glynn's work
with the friendship associations from both countries. Masanabu Ikemiya
will introduce the film. There will be representatives from Veterans for
Peace, Pax Christi, and the Peace and Justice Center in Bangor to lead
discussion afterward.

This new film, directed by Bennett Miller (Capote) is based on a
best-selling true story by Michael Lewis. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane,
the general manager of the Oakland A's baseball team in the late 1990's
and the guy who assembles the team. He is forced to reinvent his team on
a tight budget and forms an unlikely partnership with Ivy League grad
Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), creating a specialized analytical computer
program to choose bargain players that the scouts call flawed, but all of
whom have an ability to get on base, score runs, and hopefully will win
games. It is a revolution that challenges old school traditions and puts
Beane in the crosshairs of those who say he is tearing out the heart and
soul of the game. Also starring are Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin
Wright.

This touching family film is based on an amazing true story. Winter the
dolphin stars as herself in this adaptation of her remarkable and unlikely
life. She is discovered wounded and stranded on a Florida beach one
morning by a lonely, troubled pre-teen. Rescued, she is taken to the
marine aquarium's hospital, but despite their best efforts, her tail
flukes must be amputated. The boy devotes himself to her recovery, which
helps him deal with the injuries suffered by his beloved cousin in the
war. With the help of a prosthetic tail, it is hoped she will learn to
swim again. Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, Harry Connick, jr., and
Morgan Freeman lend their acting talents to this inspirational film.

Written, directed and produced by René Féret, this lush historical drama
imagines the teenaged years of Nannerl Mozart, the older sister by five
years of young prodigy Wolfgang, and a gifted musician in her own right.
On the road in 1763, their parents are taking the children touring the
European royal courts, showcasing their talents. With Nannerl approaching
the marriageable age, her father is increasingly discouraging her in her
musical ambitions, succumbing to the gender mores of the times. A
friendship with the children of French monarch Louis XV gives an
opportunity to challenge the social order.

Sedaris) trying to save his town. It's a hilarious and courageous
adventure of an unlikely hero, and the true story of a notorious fighter,
lover and outlaw, in boots.

Starring actress Vera Farmiga (Up In the Air) makes an assured directing
debut with this thoughtful, non-judgmental and believable story of a woman
questioning her faith. Inspired by Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark
World, the story spans twenty years in the life of Corinne, from the
development of her belief in the church as a young girl, through its
reinforcement as a young mother and wife living in a conservative
Christian commune, to her struggles with the doubt she faces in middle age
as she aches for a tangible connection to her God, all the while fearing
that in losing her faith she could lose her entire community of friends
and family.

DANCING AT THE MILL (NR) 63min 6:00 and 7:45
Made in collaboration with the Mount Desert Island Historical Society to
celebrate this year's 250th anniversary of European settlement on MDI,
this locally made film depicts life on Mount Desert Island from the
mid-1700s through the late 1940s. It begins with Abraham Somes' founding
of the earliest colonial settlement on the island and blossoms into a
presentation of island history, culture, and community. A unique feature
of the film is footage shot by island native Charles Savage from 1927 to
1930. In addition, many early scenes were recreated through digital
technology. You might even recognize some friends and neighbors! The film
was written by Gunnar Hansen, who wrote Mount Desert: An Informal History
and produced by Jeff Dobbs and Bing Miller of Dobbs Productions. A
portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the Mount Desert Island
Historical Society to support its further work.

Inspired by the personal experiences of screenwriter Will Reiser (Da Ali G
Show) , this is an original story about friendship, love, survival and
finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph Gordon-Leavitt (Inception, (500)
Days of Summer) is Adam, a clean-living, twenty something public radio
producer who is diagnosed with a rare bone cancer one day after
complaining to his doc about a sore back. Seth Rogan plays his best
friend who stays true through all the indignities, including radiation,
chemo, hairloss, surgery and more. In real life Rogan is Reiser's best
friend and took the same role. Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) is the
therapist trainee who isn't quite sure how to help her new client.
Angelica Huston is his hovering mom. This film is unorthodox, observant,
honestly poignant, uplifting and very funny, all at the same time.
