[Reel Pizza] Schedule May 2 - May 22

Hi everyone!

It is trying so hard (although rather ineffectively, I'd say) to be spring.  This schedule runs right up to Memorial Day weekend, so let's hope for some gorgeous days to enjoy before we are inundated with bugs!  Maybe they all froze this winter?

This coming Sunday at 1pm we will be hosting a screening of the film A PLACE AT THE TABLE for the benefit of the Bar Harbor Food Pantry.  Admission is by suggested donation of $5 or an equivalent in non-perishable food item  (which is not what the printed schedule says..... /:-| my bad....) Afterwards there will be discussion on local food security resources and how people can help.  And following the screening, another fundraiser for the Food Pantry, the 6th Annual Chef's Fiesta!, will take place at Amigo del Diablo.  Please support their good work of the Food Pantry in our community however you can.

With graduation season and the end of the school year upon us (at least getting closer!), we remind you that Reel Pizza Gift Certificates and Big Ticket passes are appreciated by all and make a great gift.  Available every evening at the box office or through the mail (PO Box 625 Bar Harbor 04609) or by calling the theater 288-3828.

And for those who are waiting (like me too), we WILL play GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, but it is still not available for a week-long booking.  We keep asking and will screen as soon as we can; thanks for your patience.

Stay warm!  (we are still heated until the need is gone!)

THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2    (PG-13)    142 min    5:15 & 8:15
Brand New!  Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone reprise their roles from the first Amazing Spiderman film.  For Peter Parker there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers and hanging with his girl Gwen, but that comes with a price, as only Spiderman can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city, including Electro (Jamie Foxx).  His friend Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaan) returns home, but he soon realizes that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.  Director Marc Webb has injected spectacular action, humor and an interesting story into this exciting new superhero film. Trailer

Fri May 2 - Mon May 5

NOAH    (PG-13)    139 min    5:30 & 8:30

Director Darren Aronofsky (The Black Swan, The Wrestler) takes on the Genesis story of Noah and the Big Flood in this visually spectacular and riveting entertainment.  Russell Crowe stars with Jennifer Connelly as his wife, Anthony Hopkins as his grandfather, Emma Watson as his adopted daughter, Logan Lerman as one of his sons, and Ray Winstone as his adversary.  From the first book of the Bible, Noah, the last descendent of Adam’s third son, Seth, lives with his wife and children in harmony with nature, while the descendants of first man Adam’s second son Cain (who murdered his older brother Abel), are corrupt, wicked and poison the earth. This film is both an epic bible story and in intimate family drama that showcases the world’s wonders.  Trailer

Tues May 6 - Thurs May 8
BAD WORDS    (R)    89 min    5:30 & 8:00

Jason Bateman (Identity Thief) stars in and makes his feature directing debut with this sly black comedy about a 40 year-old misanthrope who exploits a loophole to compete in an elementary school-aged spelling bee.  Sponsored by a curious journalist (Kathryn Hahn) who attempts to discover his true motivation, he forges an unlikely alliance with a polite and cheerful youngster who is unfazed at his unhinged sarcasm, even as he attempts to hijack the competition. Philip Baker Hall and Allison Janney are the contest officials outraged at his behavior.  It’s irreverence versus innocence in this Bad Santa meets Spellbound.  Trailer

Curious about the lack of reaction from her husband, Ila puts a little note in the following day’s lunchbox, in the hopes of getting to the bottom of the mystery.  This begins a series of lunchbox notes between them, and the mere comfort of communicating with a stranger anonymously soon evolves into an unexpected friendship. Still strangers physically, Ila and Saajan become lost in a virtual relationship that could jeopardize both their realities. Trailer

Trailer

FINDING VIVIAN MAIER    (NR)    84 min

In 2007, an amateur Chicago historian, John Maloof, purchased a box at auction full of undeveloped film and negatives.  When he looked at what he’d bought, he discovered a fantastic trove of thousands of photographs of Chicago’s people and neighborhoods from the 1950s into the 1990s, taken by a woman named Vivian Maier.  Intrigued, he started to investigate this unknown artist, whose work is now compared to Diane Arbus, Weegee, and Dorothea Lange.  He learned she was a reclusive nanny to wealthy Chicagoans, including Phil Donahue, and rarely even printed her work.  Maloof and Charlie Siskel have made a striking documentary on discovering this mysterious woman’s strange and riveting life and art.  Trailer

COMING SOON ON OUR SECOND SCREEN?

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
  (R)  99min

This irresistibly charming and funny adventure caper is set in a fictional European alpine country between the two World Wars, and recounts the tale of a lowly lobby boy Zero (Tony Revolori) and his escapades with his trusted friend and mentor, legendary concierge Gustave H (Ralph Feinnes).  These include the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune.  With his trademark idiosyncratic style, inventive and whimsical director Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom, The Fantastic Mr. Fox) has made another original film full of humor and thoughtfulness. Trailer

DRAFT DAY  (PG-13)  110min

Kevin Costner plays Sonny Weaver, the fictional, beleaguered general manager of the Cleveland Browns on the day of the NFL Draft as his personal and professional worlds collide.  His day starts with a revelation, that his secret lover and employee (Jennifer Garner) is pregnant.  He also must decide whom to pick out of this year’s pool of recruits including a hotshot QB, an ace defensive linebacker and a star running back whose dad used to play for the team; his choice is unclear and fraught with suspense, especially as his job depends on it.  His head coach (Denis Leary) and the team’s owner (Frank Langella) both have their opinions on what should happen, and even his mom (Ellen Burstyn) is bugging him.  This is an enjoyable, funny comedy from director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters, Stripes, No Strings Attached).
