[Reel Pizza] update Sept 13 - 19

Hi Everyone We are just about ready for the fifth edition of our MIFF By-the-Sea Film Festival. The tent is up, the films are here, and in a little over 24 hours, we will welcome you to see some fabulous films from Maine and beyond! Individual tickets ($8) and two choices of discount passes that can be shared between two people are available now, and will be all weekend. So look over the schedule and check online to view trailers (links on our website here) to find something(s) that look interesting to you. Please remember that BIG TICKETS will not work as admission for this weekend's films. On Sat and Sun, the doors will open 1/2 hour before showtime (ie 1:30). And BONUS, there is a ROCK-n-REEL with local musicians playing to two Buster Keaton short films Friday at 6pm and a special IMPROVISION Friday at 11pm. Playing Tuesday thru Thursday, we will be back to our regular ol' selves and will have two different films for you; documentary BLACKFISH looks at the world of marine mammals (here, orca whales) kept in captivity and forced to perform for human entertainment at sea parks, and the risks to their trainers; THE ATTACK is a balanced drama that explores the plight of an Israeli Palestinian surgeon whose life is turned upside down when he discovers his wife of 15 years is a suicide bomber who just caused a horrific attack, and he travels to his West Bank hometown to try to learn why. We look forward to seeing you this weekend, and always... -Lisa, Chris and Colin ****************************** FRI 4:00 - 6:00 CATERED OPENING NIGHT CELEBRATION (tickets $15) Screen one 6:30 - 8:00 TIME AND CHARGES (guest) 8:30 - 9:57 BOTSO 11:00 - 12:25 IMPROVISION Screen two 6:00 - 6:45 SILENT SHORTS - ROCK'N'REEL 7:00 - 8:29 SWEET DREAMS 8:45 - 10:00 GERMANIA SAT Screen one 2:00 - 2:53 BENJAMIN RABIER 3:00 - 4:28 SHORTS FROM AWAY 4:45 - 6:15 TIME AND CHARGES (guest?) 6:45 - 7:56 MAINE MADE SHORTS (guests) 8:30 - 10:00 BLUEBIRD Screen two 2:30 - 4:12 TANTA AGUA 4:30 - 5:50 ENZO AVITABILE 6:15 - 7:48 THE FIFTH SEASON 8:00 - 10:09 FAR FROM AFGHANISTAN (guest?) BLACKFISH  (PG-13)  83min  6:00 and 8:15
Filmmaker Gabriella Cowperthwaite’s new documentary is both riveting and emotionally wrenching.  She starts with the tragic story of the death of a marine mammal trainer at SeaWorld by her performing whale Tilikum, a 32 year-old, 12,000 pound bull orca who had previously killed people, but was also stolen from his family as a calf and has lived in confinement ever since.  Orca experts, and trainers and other workers give striking testimony that questions the existence of an industry that earns high profit from highly intelligent and sentient mammals held captive to perform for human enjoyment.  trailer

THE ATTACK  (R)  99min  5:30 and 8:00
Banned in the Arab world because its Lebanese director Ziad Doueiri filmed, against a long-standing prohibition, in Israel, this balanced fictional film is sympathetic to both sides of the conflict.  Ali Suliman (Paradise Now) stars as a prosperous Palestinian surgeon with a successful career in Tel Aviv and a loving wife (Reymonde Amsellem).  His world is upended when, after a horrific suicide attack, he learns that his wife was the bomber.  Considered a traitor both in his homeland and now in his adopted home, he travels at great risk to the West Bank to try to discover the truth about a woman he thought he knew.  This taut and compelling thriller is based on the novel by Yasmina Khadra.  trailer
