[Reel Pizza] Schedule July 5 - 25

BRRR!  What a difference a day or two makes!   Last update, it was too hot...

In July we have two special programs scheduled, plus we have new ART IN THE LOBBY, from our friend Wayne Bruce aka Bar Harbor Batman; all proceeds from the sale of his fun superhero and pop-culture-themed works, including  repurposed buoys depicting comic characters’ emblems, and canvas paintings, will be donated to the PARK STREET COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND PROJECT.  The Park Street Playground’s mission is to create a safe and accessible outdoor environment that promotes health, imaginative play and developmental learning for the children of Bar Harbor and the neighboring MDI communities while uniting and strengthening our community by utilizing volunteer labor in a Community-Built Process.

Our next episode of IMPROVISION will be Sunday July 14 at 11pm.  This is our wacky, occasional collaboration between Chris' B-movies and the talented folks at ImprovAcadia, where we show a movie with no sound that they have never seen before and, in a randomly chosen genre, they make up the dialogue, songs and sound effects on the spot, creating something much funnier than was ever intended originally.  It is a new show every time and always great fun.  Take a restorative afternoon nap and come check it out!

On Sunday July 21 at 2pm, we will have the second film in our 4th annual Sierra Club Summer Matinee Series.  The Maine Sierra Club presents these films and talks for free to get the public interested in environmental issues.  Every year they choose an environmental leader to showcase; in the past we have shown programs on Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, and David Suzuki.  This year the celebration is for John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club with the screening of JOHN MUIR IN THE NEW WORLD with presenter Ken Cline, a COA Professor and David Rockefeller Family Chair in Ecosystem Management and Protection

Below is the next movie schedule; Happy July, and see you soon, if not at the movies, then at the lake!

So Wrong for all the Right reasons!  Check out our occasional, wacky collaboration with the talented ImprovAcadia crew!  With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group of up and coming comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound effects to a cheesy, grade B movie, THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE!  Their talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they were ever anticipated.  It's a totally new show every time.  Don't miss out on all the fun.

Sun July 21
JOHN MUIR IN THE NEW WORLD  (NR)  85min  2:00 FREE
John Muir is revered as the father of the environmental movement and the founder of the Sierra Club, the oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization in the USA. This documentary delves into Muir's life and influences with reenactments filmed in high definition throughout the majestic landscapes he visited. This film is a timely reminder of America's unique and threatened ecosystems. A lover and champion of the American wilderness, Muir believed that it is our responsibility as citizens to protect our natural surroundings. Through his tireless advocacy and his writings, Muir helped preserve the Yosemite Valley and began the first nationwide battles for the protection of the environment.  Ken Cline, Professor of Environmental Law and Policy at COA will introduce the film. The Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club presents this free summer film series to get people thinking about environmental issues.

Wed July 3 - Thurs July 18  (2 weeks)

THE LONE RANGER   (PG-13)  149min  5:00 and 8:00 *no later show on July 4th.

In this thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, the story of how law man John Reid (Armie Hammer) is transformed into a legend of justice is recounted by Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp).  Full of epic surprises and amusing friction, these two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.  This BRAND NEW film, filmed across the southwest US, is from the producing/directing team behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Fri July 5 - Mon July 8

FAST AND FURIOUS 6  (PG-13)  130min  5:30 and 8:15

This summer’s ultimate popcorn flick (at least so far)!  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris Bridges, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriquez return for another installment of this blockbuster franchise, where cars go very, very fast, the stunts and set pieces are beyond believable, and the story is secondary.  Luke Evans plays the bad guy the six friends are out to catch, so that they can be pardoned for previous crimes committed.  Director Justin Lin makes his fourth entry of the series, keeping things light and entertaining.

Tues July 9 - Thurs July 11

LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED  (R)  110min  [partly in Danish and Italian with subtitles]   5:30 and 8:15

Oscar-winning Danish director Susanne Bier (In a Better World), with her writing partner Anders Thomas Jensen, has made a sweet, poignant and authentic romantic dramady. Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm star as the grouchy widowed and estranged father of the groom and the ailing and recently separated mother of the bride whose lives come together at their childrens’ wedding at his country home in Sorrento Italy. With warmth, affection and confidence this excellent, talented filmmaker has made a charming, believable story of second chances.

Fri July 12 - Thurs July 25 (2 weeks)

PACIFIC RIM (PG-13)  131 min   5:30 and 8:15

This is the brand new science-fiction adventure from director Guillermo del Toro.  When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began. To combat these giants, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are struggling, proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi).  Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Fri July 19 - Mon July 22

BEFORE MIDNIGHT  (R)  108min   6:00 and 8:30

The third part of the acclaimed love story between American slacker Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Parisian beauty Celine (Julie Deply), following Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), finds the two, another nine years later, as unmarried parents of young twin daughters on vacation in Greece with his teenage son by his first marriage.  Director Richard Linklater has made a thought-provoking and memorable portrait of one couple’s relationship in middle age.  With honest acting and intelligent dialogue, these two have embraced their characters with all the unpredictability and bittersweet tension that love creates.

Tues July 23 - Thurs July 25

THE ANGELS’ SHARE  (NR)  106min  [in a thick Scottish Brogue, with subtitles]   6:00 and 8:30

The Jury Prize winner at last year’s Cannes Festival, this surprisingly engaging and delightfully uplifting comedy is from usually bleaker, social realist director Ken Loach (The Wind that Shakes the Barley) working with his longtime writing partner Paul Laverty.  After a violent episode, young, expectant father Robbie is sentenced not to jail but to many hours of community service by a merciful judge.  On days off his supervisor takes him and his cohorts Rhino, Albert and Mo on field trips, one day to a whiskey tasting where Robbie discovers a new talent.  Will he be able to keep his promise to break the cycle of violence in his life and not pass it on to his newborn son?
