[Reel Pizza] Schedule June 15 - July 5

Weekend Greetings!  Here is our next schedule - In full summer swing!  Cheers!  -Lisa

“What is up with this schedule?” you regulars might be wondering.  This is different than what we are used to, certainly.  Each of these brand new titles will be screening for a full week this time around.  Over the past several years we have been sharing new summer releases with a couple of other Downeast cinemas, and this summer many of the studios’ promising titles are jammed into this timeframe; sometimes this is just what happens!   We will be booking our second screen for the week including 4th of July in late June and expect it will be one of the titles below.  Back to normal next time--promise!

NEW ART  CHALESE CARLSON   Wilson, Wyoming
“For this project I used Mount Desert Island as a space to explore ecological functions that are habitually lost amidst the clutter of everyday experience and make them vivid and expressive for my audience. I'm especially trying to pay homage to the notion of the material and the indefinite together by using the aesthetic of landscape as a tool to incite discussion of conservation and ecology, and ultimately what humans enjoy and value in the appearance of landscape. I have re-ordered disparate imagery of the natural world, such as bits and pieces from the land, and spliced it with manual and mechanical imagery, with the intention of creating bodies that blend the different components of a particular space. I hope to have created a visual space that portrays this island on many aesthetic and scientific levels-aligning ecology and design.”

ps PLEASE remember ON WEDNESDAY JULY 4th, Reel Pizza will only have early shows of the scheduled films, which will both be out in time for Bar Harbor’s Independence Day fireworks display at 9:00pm.  Happy 4th!

Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover without attracting attention: a traveling circus, but soon they are being chased down by a psychotic animal control officer (Frances McDormand).  It’s a silly and very fun action adventure that is sure to please the whole family.

Blige co-star in the new film from director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) based on the Broadway show.

She makes a reckless choice that inadvertently unleashes unintended peril and chaos and forces her to spring into action to set things right.  When she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late.

These scientists become stranded on an alien world, and, as they struggle to survive, it becomes clear that the horrors they experience are not just a threat to themselves, but to all of mankind. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.  Starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbinder, Charlize Theron, and Guy Pierce.

COMING ON SCREEN #2 FOR WEEK OF JULY 4TH?

MIB3 (MEN IN BLACK 3) (PG-13) 103min

A crazy alien (Jemaine Clement), put in jail by reticent Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) years ago, has escaped his lunar prison and travels back in time to 1969 to wreck his revenge on both his captor and the Earth.  Agent J (Will Smith) must also travel back in time to save his partner and put things to right.  Josh Brolin is spot on as the younger Agent K, giving a performance that uncannily channels Jones.  Full of self-knowing humor, excellent action set pieces, and an interesting story this is a rare sequel, again directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, which is full of the spirit of the first film, and way better than the first sequel.

BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL  (PG-13) 124min

A group of British retirees (played by Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy and others) decide for various reasons to move their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India, enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel.  Bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, these disparate expats arrive to find the palace, run by young Sonny (Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire), a shell of its former self. This delightful ensemble, based on Deborah Moggach’s novel These Foolish Things, is directed with charm by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love).

SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN  (PG-13)  127min

This brand-new film turns the classic fairytale into an epic action adventures.  Charlize Theron is the evil queen out to destroy the fairest maiden in the land (Kristen Stewart).  But Snow White, rescued by the huntsman (Chris Hensworth) has been training in the arts of war with him.  Sam Claflin plays the prince enchanted by her beauty.
