[Reel Pizza] Schedule Dec 26 - Jan 20

Holiday Greeting to Everyone!

We have been back from a lovely time on St. John in the US Virgin Islands for about a week, and are still relaxed and nearly ready to begin showing films to you once more.  If you are interested, we would be more than happy to tell you about our trip.

Some notes:
We will begin our winter program of Thursday afternoon Senior Matinees the first week of January 2011.  Island Connections (288-4457) can arrange a ride if you qualify for that kind of assistance.  On Jan 6th we will screen THE SOCIAL NETWORK at 1:30.

Gift Certificates are still available for all you procrastinators out there, ...like me!  They never expire, and your recipient will be glad to use it.  Reply to this email, or call 288-3828 during school hours (leave a message after hours- I will return your call if you'd like), or send a check with a note of what you want (PO Box 625 Bar Harbor 04609), and I will fulfill your request.  OR, Please feel free to stop in during the day...come in the side door by the church (which will be unlocked when we are here) and up the stairs; I will be glad to help you out.

Please remember that many of the films with *Oscar Buzz* are in very limited release this time of year; we will certainly play them as soon as we can, once their distribution has been widened enough to include Bar Harbor.  We thank you for your patience.

Also, we are not a 3D equipped cinema.  You won't miss it!   ALL our films are shown in bright, clear 2D.

Below is the schedule of films for the next month or so.  It will be lovely to see you all again, when you get a chance to come in.  Happy Solstice, and don't worry about any post-Holiday doldrums...we will bring back the (projector) light very soon!

With great appreciation

-Lisa and Chris

Fri Dec 31 - Thurs Jan 6
THE SOCIAL NETWORK (PG-13)  120min    6:00 and 8:30
Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac) teams up with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) making a critically acclaimed, resonant and mesmerizing dramatization about the beginnings of the internet phenomenon known as Facebook, and the legal and personal repercussions that grew along with the businesss popularity and profitability.  The story begins with geeky Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg, Adventureland) reeling from a date with his girlfriend where she calls him not-so-nice names and breaks up with him.  His revengeful reaction to this rejection leads him to create an imaginary world where anyone can have the illusion of a relationship, even someone with no social skills.  He is financially assisted by his only friend (Andrew Garfield) only to leave him behind for the advice of Napsters creator (Justin Timberlake) as the venture thrives.

Friday Dec 31 - Mon Jan 3
MEGAMIND  (PG)  96min  [in 2D]   5:30 and 7:45
This delightful, smart and funny animated film from Madagascar director Tom McGrath turns the superhero story on its head.  Bulbous blue-headed Megamind (Will Ferrell), a brilliantly evil super-villain, wants to conquer Metro City, yet he always is defeated by his virtuous, do-gooder nemesis (who has much better hair) Metro Man (Brad Pitt).  That is, until the one day when Megamind prevails, Metroman disappears in a poof of smoke, and he is left without an adversary.  Dreadfully bored now, he uses his powers to create another opponent named Titan/Tighten (Jonah Hill), but unfortunately for him, the new superhero is not a hero at all but a worse villain than Megamind who wreaks havoc on Metro City, plus they are fighting over the same girl (Tina Fey).  Will Megamind have to become a good guy and save the day?

Tues Jan 4 - Thurs Jan 6
THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST  (R)  148min  [in SWEDISH with subtitles]    5:15 and 8:15
This rewarding final installment of the thrilling, thought-provoking and best-selling trilogy by Stieg Larsson picks up right where the The Girl Who Played With Fire ended.  In this fast-moving conspiracy story Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist reprise their roles as brooding, punk cyber-hacker Lisbeth Salander and her unlikely defender, investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist.  She is confined to hospital bed with three bullets lodged in her thanks to her estranged father, while facing attempted murder charges.  He is trying to sort out who is behind the plot to eliminate her while his sister lawyer prepares her defense and Lisbeth prepares her revenge.

MORNING GLORY  (PG-13)  102min
Director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Venus) sets his smartly and enjoyably funny new romantic comedy with an excellent cast in the world of national morning television programming.  The lowest ranked show has just hired a young producer (Rachel McAdams) whose career is on the line.   She immediately decides to bring on a legendary but bygone news anchor (Harrison Ford) to co-anchor with the longtime host and former beauty queen (Diane Keaton) while he fills out the end of his contract, but his reluctance and grumpiness test her, even as his co-host is game for anything.  Meanwhile, her travails with her new job are taking their toll on her budding relationship with another producer (Patrick Wilson), and soon she finds herself struggling to save everything in her life.

Tues Jan 11 - Thurs Jan 13
NOWHERE BOY  (R)  97min
John Lennons formative years, before the Beatles, are explored in this biography of the great songwriter, based on a knowledgeable book by his half-sister Julia Baird and directed with insight by Sam Taylor-Wood.  Played by Aaron Johnson, young Lennon is a troubled teen in lower-middle class Liverpool, chafing from life with his strict aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) who has raised him since her flakey sister (Ann Marie Duff) gave him up when he was a young child.  Learning when he is a young man that his birth mother lives nearby gave rise to a new-found relationship, and she taught him to play banjo.  His bond with his mother and his discovery of rock-n-roll are formative experiences for him;  the effects are soon be found in his lyrics, as by the end of the film, he has formed a band, the Quarrymen, with some school mates including George Harrison and Paul McCartney.

Fri Jan 14 - Mon Jan 17
UNSTOPPABLE  (PG-13)  98min
This classic runaway train story breathlessly hurtles towards its destination after an inept engineer accidently sends an unmanned train carrying toxic waste southbound on a northbound track towards a small Pennsylvania city.   Denzel Washington and Chris Pine (Star Trek) star as the two conductors, one a seasoned veteran, the other an arrogant rookie, who are charged with intervention before this out-of-control locomotive derails on a curve, using the help of a smart dispatcher (Rosario Dawson).  Director Tony Scott uses real stunts featuring actual trains on real tracks in making this genuinely thrilling and superbly crafted cinematic experience.

Tues Jan 18 - Thurs Jan 20
WAITING FOR SUPERMAN  (PG)  102min
On the short list for Best Documentary Oscar, director Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) has made a provocative, discussion-inducing film about education in America.  He puts a personal face on the crisis facing our national educational system, as more money has not been able to stem the tide in the decline of students abilities over the past few decades.  He follows several students from 4 US cities desperate to secure through lottery a rare place in a charter school rather than linger in their local school more likely to produce a dropout than a graduate.  Exploring the reality of public education for many, he gives voice to innovative solutions hopeful to bring reform and success to our children.

THE FIGHTER  (R)  114min
Based on a true story from 1990s Lowell Mass., David O. Russells gripping film with excellent performances all around explores family and commitment through an underdog boxing story.   Mark Wahlberg plays Mickey, a young boxer who hopes to repeat the success in the ring of his idol, trainer and older half-brother Dickey (Christian Bale), who once showed promise, but now is a criminal and crack addict who milks his past glory.  But he isnt winning fights.  When Dickey lands in jail, Mickey and his girlfriend Charlene (Amy Adams) think his career might be better served with a paid trainer, but this doesnt go over well with the mens formidable, manipulative mom (Melissa Leo), who manages Mickeys career yet clearly prefers Dickey.  When do poisonous family dynamics become so toxic that they must be abandoned?
