[Reel Pizza] schedule

As promised, here is the new schedule for Reel Pizza. This one runs from
May 22 through June 11th.

First some special notices:

We have lovely new art in our lobby. Come see the paintings of KATRINA
SHAMBARGER. Katrina is a 4 year resident of Southwest Harbor. Previously
living in Ohio, Nebraska, Colorado, France, Wisconsin and Guadeloupe, it
was in Maine that she found her artistic voice. Although she primarily
paints imaginative subjects, the landscape and vivid colors of Maine are
sources of inspiration. Her palette frequently contains teal, the violets
and reds of Maine's granite and shale, as well as the spectrum of color
that exists between the shallow and deep waters of Maine's lakes and
coast. Her grandfather's love and talent for stained glass also inspire
the artist, as many of her works are reminiscent of stained glass windows.
As a jewelry maker, she relishes in the idea of "wearable" art. She
makes pendants with her collages and wire-wrapped sea glass pendants and
earrings with pearls and beads that bobble just like sand and seashells in
the waves on a beach. She can be reached at 207-664-9922 or via her
website kshambarger.etsy.com

And some special programming:
SPCA BENEFIT Saturday May 30
BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE (PG) 106min 1:00pm
As a fundraiser for their Trenton animal shelter, the Hancock County SPCA
is presenting a matinee of this wonderful family-friendly film starring
AnnaSophia Robb, Jeff Daniels, and Cicely Tyson and featuring the music of
Dave Matthews. Based on the award-winning story by Kate DiCamillo this
heartwarming film tells the story of a lonely girl who adopts a stray dog
and how their friendship changes her life. All the ticket proceeds will
be used for the care of the shelter animals and the adoption center. For
more information call 667-8088 or email spca@gwi.net.

And on to films:

Friday May 22 - Thursday May 28
TERMINATOR SALVATION (PG-13) 115min 6:00 and 8:30
Brand new, this new installment of the popular series stars Christian Bale
(The Dark Knight) as John Connor. Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, he is
fated to lead the surviving human resistance against the final onslaught
of the evil Skynet and its army of Terminators who are trying to destroy
mankind. But the appearance of a stranger, Marcus Wright (Sam
Worthington), whose last memory is of being on death row, alters his
paradigm. Is this newcomer sent from the future or has he been rescued
from the past? As they infiltrate the heart of Skynet's operations, they
uncover a terrible secret. McG (Charlies Angels) directs.

Friday May 22 - Monday May 25
EARTH (G) 96min 5:30 and 7:45
Combining rare action, unimaginable scale and impossible locations while
capturing the most intimate moments of our planet's wildest and most
elusive creatures, this first film from Disneynature tells the remarkable
stories of three animal families and their amazing journeys across our
planet. The creative team behind the "Planet Earth" series follows polar
bears in the Arctic, elephants in Africa's Kalahari Desert, and humpback
whales in the southern ocean. Additionally the filmmakers encounter other
creatures, caribou, grey wolves, lions, cheetahs, great white sharks,
baboons, and mandarin ducks among others. The spectacular footage
combined with a vital ecological message makes for a provocative,
transfixing film for all.

Tuesday May 26 - Thursday May 28
SHALL WE KISS? (NR) 96min [in FRENCH with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:00
Wry, observant and touching, this discreet French farce in the style of
Woody Allen from director Emmanuel Mouret explores the ramifications from
an innocent kiss. Gabriel and Emilie meet by chance while on a business
trip, and they spend a delightful evening together. Although they both
have significant others at home, they are both attracted to each other.
However at the end of the evening, when Gabriel leans over to give her a
casual kiss goodbye, she declines, saying a kiss always has consequences,
and tells a story of two friends whose one indulgent kiss had significant
and unexpected results.

Friday May 29 - Monday June 1
SUNSHINE CLEANING (R) 91min
A single mom and her slacker sister find an unexpected way to turn their
lives around in this off-beat dramatic comedy. Desperate to get her young
son into a better school, Rose (Amy Adams, Enchantment) convinces her
younger sister (Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada), who still lives at
home with their always scheming Dad (Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine),
into going into business together in the crime scene cleanup business.
This spirited and uplifting film about an average family that finds the
path to its dreams in an unlikely setting, directed by Christine Jeffs
(Sylvia), is heartfelt and totally entertaining.

Tuesday June 2 - Thursday June 4
FADOS (NR) 88min [lyrics in Portuguese with subtitles]
Veteran Spanish director Carlos Saura completes his award-winning musical
trilogy, which includes TANGO and FLAMENCO, with this elegant celebration
of Fado, the haunting, bluesy ballads of the Portuguese working class with
African and Brazilian roots. Saura expands the songs, traditionally only
involving a singer and guitarist, with dance, with other nationalities,
especially former colonies of Portugal, and styles, including hip-hop,
reggae and flamenco. This ravishing, non-purist fusion of cinema, song,
dance and instrument conveys the director's grand vision of music's power
to break down boundaries. This is sadly the final film to be released
from recently closed New Yorker Films, the venerable distributor of
international arthouse films to our cinemas for over 40 years.

Friday June 5 - Monday June 8
THE WAY WE GET BY (NR) 86min
We are always delighted to show documentary films by Mainers, this one
directed by Old Town native Aron Gaudet, especially one whose subject is
Mainers. Penobscot county residents 86 year old Bill Knight, 75 year old
Joan Gaudet, and 73 year old Jerry Mundy show the best part of our
collective goodness, as this remarkable film shows how their kindness
transforms their lives. These three determined senior citizens have been
honorably and dutifully, no matter the hour, greeting all our troops as
they pass through Bangor International Airport, the last USA stop on their
way to or first stop when returning from serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
But this award-winning movie is also a deeply moving, compassionate and
inspiring story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality that reminds of
the heartbreak and redemption of our elders so often cast aside in our
youth-honoring culture.

Tuesday June 9 - Thursday June 11
TULPAN (NR) 100min [in KAZAKH and RUSSIAN with subtitles]
In this gently absurd, quite funny and gorgeous comedy, a shy young man,
just returned to the vast Kazakh steppe home of his sister from his
military service in the Russian Navy, is trying to woo the only
marriage-age girl for many kilometers with outrageous tales of slaying
giant sea creatures. Only after marrying may he start his own
hardscrabble existence in this desolate land, get his own yurt, and tend
his own flock of sheep. Hiding behind a curtain, the girl says his ears
are too big, but he is undeterred from proving his worth. Cannes winner
of the Prix Un Certain Regard and the first feature from acclaimed
ethnographic documentarian Sergey Dvortsevoy, this crowd-pleasing,
accessible film is full of exquisite nature photography and an observant,
intimate look at a vanishing way of life.

COMING ON OUR SECOND SCREEN:

ANGELS AND DEMONS (PG-13) 138min
Director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks return for this sequel to The
DaVinci Code, based on Dan Brown's novel. Hanks again plays symbologist
Robert Langdon who has been summoned to the Vatican to help solve a murder
mystery at the Vatican with the help of beautiful, enigmatic Italian
scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer). He also discovers the resurgence
of a secret brotherhood with ancient roots, the Illuminati, which will
stop at nothing to advance their goals. These two embark on a non-stop,
action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs and deserted
cathedrals to help the Catholic Church survive.

STAR TREK (PG-13) 126min
There is loads of anticipation for this new film, full of action, comedy
and cosmic peril, in the venerable series. Directed by JJ Adams (Lost,
MI:3), this prequel tells the story of the beginnings of the Starship
Enterprise, the most advanced starship ever created. Thrill-seeking farm
boy, James Kirk, and half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock who was raised in a
world devoid of all emotion are bitter rivals but they must tame their
rivalry, making a powerful partnership to lead their crew through
unimaginable dangers as they fight an evil that threatens all mankind.
Live Long and Prosper!
