SUMMER IS HERE! and with it, the next Reel Pizza schedule which runs July 4 - July 24. Please note that on Friday July 4, we will not show a later evening show of either film in deference to the fireworks display. If the fireworks are cancelled due to inclement weather, we will show our films at both their regularly scheduled times. We have wonderful new art gracing our lobby walls. Some of you might also be interested in our new summer Friday night Late Night Series; read all about it below. Plus, the Island Explorer bus is now up and running if you want an alternative way to get to the cinema. From our parking lot this summer you can also catch a free shuttle out to tour the Bar Harbor Winery at Sweet Pea's Farm and the Bar Harbor Brewery in Town Hill every afternoon at 2:30, returning you back to town between 4:30 and 5pm. Wednesday is Farmer's Market Day from 9am - 1pm. and there's lots of great local produce and products to choose from. And finally, don't forget that you can watch everything we show in air-conditioned comfort. Ahhhhhhhh....

"Growing up spending summers in Northeast Harbor, one of my favorite activities was combing the beaches for "treasures." I now live here year-round and can comb the beaches of MDI and other points DownEast in all seasons, discovering whatever gems: sand dollars, sea glass, shells, driftwood and other fascinating objects, the ocean deposits on the shore. I am also now realizing a dream – to create art with the 'found' objects. As a collector of folk art for years, I finally decided to try creating fish and other sea creatures from the pieces of flotsam and jetsam that have for years filled jars and boxes in my house. I mostly use these "sea changed" objects, but sometimes I find perfectly suited ornaments at the dump or at yard sales. Actually half the fun is finding the bits that can be combined into a new creation. It makes each piece different and each piece unique."
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
Are you feeling the summer doldrums although it's barely even July? Have no fear, preventative measures are being taken. On Friday nights at 11 pm through July and August, Reel Pizza Cinerama will be offering several expanded program options to distract and entertain you. These late-night events are all movie-based, but will widen the scope of movie viewing (and allow us to have some fun with friends) by including collaborations with the talented performers of ImprovAcadia, musical performances from several local bands, and the opportunity for community members to submit their own work.
The Friday Late Nite program will kick off on July 11th with an ImproVision screening of the 1958 sci-fi B-movie Queen of Outer Space staring Zsa Zsa Gabor. The movie, showing a rebellion of boy-crazy Venusian women, will be played silently – allowing the ImprovAcadia crew (who have not seen the film) to improvise the dialogue, music, and sound effects live in the theatre. Who knows what unexpected turns the plot could take?
This event will be followed on Friday the 18th by a session of Rock & Reel, in which local bands provide contemporary accompaniment to classic, unique silent films. This week's pairing features The Shakes – Caleb Davis, Carl Davis, James Pike and Gage Villere – performing with the 1929 Russian feature Man with a Movie Camera. This fast-paced, kaleidoscopic film is an attempt to capture the full beauty and chaos of life, and uses a stunning variety of trick photography to position its heroic cameraman in every possible place necessary to achieve this (including inside a glass of beer!).
July's final event, on the 25th, will be our open-submission Program-O-Rama. Have you or your friends made a film or video? Have you found something online you think everyone should see? Set in the 1980's, Will is a withdrawn, lonely child who has grown up in a media-rejecting, strictly religious home; Lee is a latchkey delinquent being raised by his bullying older brother. When these two misfits meet while sharing detention, they bond. Lee introduces Will to movies with the first Rambo film, FIRST BLOOD, and they decide to enter a filmmaking competition with their own sequel. This eccentric and funny film inventively mixes farce and fantasy into a picture of innocence and creativity.

When he arrives at his rarely used condo, he finds it occupied, sublet in a realestate scam to two illegal immigrants, a Syrian drummer and his Senegalese girlfriend. He turns them out, only to invite them back in when he realizes they have nowhere else to go. This act begins a friendship that will change them all.

Although this inexperienced yet enthusiastic new spy dreams of working with star Agent 3 (Dwayne Johnson), the Chief (Alan Arkin, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) instead partners him with lovely, lethal Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA). When Dad loses his job and must leave home to find work, Mom (Julie Ormand) takes in boarders to make ends meet, including Joan Cusack's wacky librarian, Jane Krakowski's beautiful nurse, and Stanley Tucci's travelling magician. When a young hobo Kit meets is unfairly blamed for a local crime wave, she and her friends become sleuths to clear the boy's name and solve the mystery; they are surprised when their trail of clues lead to her own house. Mixing comedy, tragedy and suspense, director Patricia Rozema (Mansfield Park) has made a wonderful, engaging film, full of period details, which resonates with the similar challenges of today's economic climate.

[Reel Pizza] schedule
hello everyone.
Well, we have had a crazy busy weekend. I must start by saying THANK YOU so much to everyone who participated in all the HELP CHRIS events organized to assist us in paying Chris's medical bills from his hand accident this past winter. It was all rather overwhelming, but we are so full of gratitude to all who helped us, especially to Ellen Dohmen, our fairy godmother who spearheaded this massive effort. Our entire family appreciates this phenomenally generous community. We are so glad to share this beautiful space with you all, and will remember your selfless giving for the rest of our lives. Again, thank you.
Second, and briefly, PLEASE VOTE TODAY.
Third, Congratulations! to all our recent graduates, and to all school kids and teachers who have successfully completed another year. I have (most enjoyably) spent a good amount of time helping in the 4th grade at Conners-Emerson school this past year, and it has only reinforced my notion that teachers are saints and kids are amazing.
Fourth, we just celebrated another anniversary! Yesterday, June 9th, Reel Pizza turned lucky number 13. Seems like only yesterday that we started this little venture. We know we are only successful because you all join us. So again, we thank you.
Finally, here is the next movie schedule. It runs Friday June 13 through Thursday July 3. It is completely booked, so I can give you times for all the films within these dates. The offerings include a couple of brand new films that have not yet been released, a "back by popular demand" title, and some films folks have been asking for for a while. We hope you find something that piques your interest. At some point in the very near future, the ISLAND EXPLORER Bus will begin servicing the island. It lands right at our door, so it is very convenient to movie-going, and helps save $4 gas for some other use.

British filmmaker Stephen Walker has made an unexpectedly delightful and moving film about this spirited group of octogenarians, facing death, living life, and singing to stay alive.

The actors all give excellent performances of multi-dimensional characters in this small, smart comedy-drama.

Everest, under the guidance and encouragement of famed, blind American climber Eric Weihenmayer. The resulting remarkable journey juxtaposes the competitiveness of the American guides to reach the summit, with the shared sensory experience favored by the Asians. This powerful, inspirational film was exquisitely photographed by cinematographer Petr Cikart (Into the Void).

As some of you might have heard, while we were closed last December our Chris suffered an unfortunate accident with a woodsplitter that shattered bones in his right hand. Over this winter, some friends and customers have organized a weekend of events to help raise money to help us with the mountain of medical bills. Over the weekend of June 6 – 8, many local businesses, including Reel Pizza, will be participating in a dine-around benefit. All day on Saturday, a series of events are planned at the Masonic Hall on High Street, including a bake sale and silent auction with live music, culminating with an evening contra-dance. There is also a cruise on the Margaret Todd on Sat June 14. There are too many generous businesses and participants to list here, but for more information check out the website helpchris.net. This wonderful film was disqualified from the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for being too much in English, the default language used by the Arabs and Israelis to communicate with each other. The members of the Alexandria (Egypt) Ceremonial Police Orchestra, striking in their powder blue uniforms, are scheduled to play in Israel at the opening of an Arab cultural center. Stranded at the airport without a ride, they decide to take public transportation, but communication difficulties cause them to take the wrong bus and they are deposited in a remote desert town where they end up spending the night at the invitation of the local café owner. First-time Israeli filmmaker Eran Kolirin's refreshing and winning gem of a film is full of unforced warmth and observant humor, as the locals and the visitors make acquaintance.

Knocked unconscious in a brawl, a Boston teen awakens in a mythical kingdom where he must return, with the help of a drunk kung-fu master (Jackie Chan), a magical staff to the Monkey King, enslaved by the evil Jade Warlord. But soon the staff is stolen by a silent monk (Jet Li). The sequences pairing Chan's Drunken Master style with Li's classical method is great fun, the action choreography by Wo Ping Yuen (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) and cinematography by Peter Pau (also, CTHD). Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, The Lion King) directs this family friendly homage to and spoof of the kung fu epics of old. It's great fun.

As some of you might have heard, while we were closed last December our Chris suffered an unfortunate accident with a woodsplitter that shattered bones in his right hand. Over this winter, some friends and customers have organized a weekend of events to help raise money to help us with the mountain of medical bills. Over the weekend of June 6 – 8, many local businesses, including Reel Pizza, will be participating in a dine-around benefit. All day on Saturday, a series of events are planned at the Masonic Hall on High Street, including a bake sale and silent auction with live music, culminating with an evening contra-dance. There is also a cruise on the Margaret Todd on Sat June 14. There are too many generous businesses and participants to list here, but for more information check out the website helpchris.net. These two are fumbling their way through their respective life-crises (mid-life and adolescence) with the help of Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) who plays a former lit major who turned to pre-med when the collegiate crush on her professor was shattered by a bad grade on a paper. Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) plays the professor's loser brother, always looking for a handout, who bonds with his niece. This wryly funny and poignant look at a dysfunctional family is the debut film of commercials director Noam Murro.

This wonderful film was disqualified from the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for being too much in English, the default language used by the Arabs and Israelis to communicate with each other. The members of the Alexandria (Egypt) Ceremonial Police Orchestra, striking in their powder blue uniforms, are scheduled to play in Israel at the opening of an Arab cultural center. Stranded at the airport without a ride, they decide to take public transportation, but communication difficulties cause them to take the wrong bus and they are deposited in a remote desert town where they end up spending the night at the invitation of the local café owner. First-time Israeli filmmaker Eran Kolirin's refreshing and winning gem of a film is full of unforced warmth and observant humor, as the locals and the visitors make acquaintance.

Surprisingly light, this heartwarming film is about an illegal Mexican mom (Kate del Castillo) working in Los Angeles, and her young son (Adrian Alonso, Legend of Zorro) who undertakes an arduous, harrowing journey to join her, when his guardian and grandma in Mexico dies. The debut film from director Patricia Riggen honestly earns its emotional pull while touching on timely issues of immigration and discrimination. America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) is a college student turned smuggler, raising money to pay her tuition. This film earned a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival.

Winning this year's Oscar for best foreign language film, Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky's Holocaust-era drama deftly looks at the moral dilemma of a Jewish criminal, a professional counterfeiter, whose life in the concentration camp is vastly improved when he is chosen to help with a Nazi scheme to counterfeit British and American currency to destabilize the enemy's economies. He conflicts with another chosen prisoner bent on sabotaging the operation (the man upon whose memoir this film is based). It is a deeply impressive work that addresses a topic not often explored in cinema.

Tibetan culture believes that blindness is a karmic punishment for sins committed in a past life, or is a result of being possessed by a demon. Documentary filmmaker Lucy Walker (Devil's Playground) follows the gripping adventure of six blind Tibetan teens who, with their innovative, blind teacher, who founded Tibet's only school for the blind Braille without Borders, set out to climb the 23,000 ft peak on the north side of Mt. Everest, under the guidance and encouragement of famed, blind American climber Eric Weihenmayer. The resulting remarkable journey juxtaposes the competitiveness of the American guides to reach the summit, with the shared sensory experience favored by the Asians. This powerful, inspirational film was exquisitely photographed by cinematographer Petr Cikart (Into the Void).

One event I have forgotten to mention to you is the Bar Harbor Merchant's Association 2nd annual Sale'bration, a town-wide yard sale, with several booths set up in the Reel Pizza parking lot. Originally scheduled for this Saturday (that would be tomorrow) from 10am to 2pm, it has been postponed until next Saturday May 17 due to a rainy weather forecast for tomorrow. Save gas, just come to town and walk around for access to lots of great bargains, next weekend.

[Reel Pizza] schedule
A Good Day to everyone--
First, I do apologize about everyone getting a random message last Friday (a request for info about Reel Pizza). I think I might have done something inadvertently that caused that message to go out to you all. I am, obviously, still learning about Mailing List Administration. I hope no one was inconvenienced by this goof, and I will try to figure out what I did so it doesn't happen again!
We have new LOBBY ART beginning May 2, the Photography of Leslie Ricker, Mount Desert.
Les grew up in a poor but happy family, the youngest of 7, up in Aroostook County. He was given a 35mm camera for his highschool graduation and taught himself to take pictures, trying to capture the beauty that was all around him that maybe folks were too busy to notice. When he was 19, he hitchhiked to Bar Harbor as he had heard that MDI was a beautiful place. And he was not disappointed when he discovered it was a mystical place and an aspiring photographer's dream. By and by he got a job as sternman for Gary Parsons which he continued for a dozen years, but not without giving up on his dream of being a photographer. Now he is again taking pictures using his God-given sense of composition and hopes that one day his photography will be discovered.

Acadia Senior College presents The "BIG IDEAS" Series, screening films, followed by discussion, that explore the promise and peril of ideas that challenge our current prevailing conceptions in these fast-paced times. What big ideas are changing the way people think about our world in the 21st century? What, exactly, are Big Ideas? These questions will be the theme of this ongoing series of events sponsored by Acadia Senior College. On Sunday, May 18 at 1pm, we proudly host the inaugural event with the film THE END OF SUBURBIA. This film explores the American way of life as expressed in the explosion of suburban sprawl over the past 50 years, and the serious questions beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. As global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply, the consequences of inaction are enormous. In this documentary, scientists and policy makers discuss what World Oil Peak means for North America. How will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done now, individually and collectively, to avoid the end of suburbia? A community discussion will follow the showing with David Hales, Pres. of COA; Erika Shriner, Activist and writer; and Karen Wigglesworth of the Maine Earth Institute.
And finally, the BAR HARBOR GREEN MARKET will again grace our parking lot Wednesday's from 9am - 1pm beginning Wednesday May 21, and continues through the fall. YUM!
We are moving into the summer-y time (at least according to the movie biz calendar). Chris and I want to send a big THANK YOU to all of you who came to Reel Pizza this winter. We appreciate and enjoy all our local customers so very much, and are really glad to be here helping make wintertime on MDI a little less dark and a little less cold. For those of you who do not come to Bar Harbor in these upcoming crazy-busy months, adieu till fall. We will be delighted to see the rest of you, through your familiar faces, during the summer, as we continue with our crazy mix of art, foreign, Hollywood, documentary and independent film, although you might notice it is a little heavier on the Hollywood for a bit as we all pretend we are on vacation with everyone else who is in town.

But the casinos don't appreciate card counters, so these kids must stay one step ahead of the top security guard (Laurence Fishburne), keep their cards straight, and not be seduced by the high life.

Winner of this year's Best Documentary Oscar, this vital, sobering film is the latest from director/screenwriter Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room). Ostensibly this film is about an innocent Afghani taxi driver who in December 2002 was detained, taken into US custody, interrogated about a rocket attack and was dead 5 days later as a result of his treatment. The director interviews the soldiers responsible who argue that their behavior, admittedly bad, was at the behest of their superior officers. But soon the staff is stolen by a silent monk (Jet Li). The sequences pairing Chan's Drunken Master style with Li's classical method is great fun, the action choreography by Wo Ping Yuen (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) and cinematography by Peter Pau (also, CTHD). Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, The Lion King) directs this family friendly homage to and spoof of the kung fu epics of old. Its great fun.

This character-driven relationship comedy-drama features an terrific cast who bring all their skill to their rolls. Dennis Quaid (The Rookie) is a widowed, cranky and brilliant English Lit professor who hasn't gotten over the death of his wife years before. Ellen Page (Juno) is his teenaged daughter who is following in her father's footsteps. These two are fumbling their way through their respective life-crises (mid-life and adolescence) with the help of Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) who is a former lit major who turned to pre-med when the collegiate crush on her professor was shattered by a bad grade on a paper. Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) is the professor's loser brother, always looking for a handout, who bond's with his niece. This wryly funny and poignant look at a dysfunctional family is the debut film of commercials director Noam Murro.

First, I do apologize about everyone getting a random message last Friday (a request for info about Reel Pizza). I think I might have done something inadvertently that caused that message to go out to you all. I am, obviously, still learning about Mailing List Administration. We have new LOBBY ART beginning May 2, the Photography of Leslie Ricker, Mount Desert.
Les grew up in a poor but happy family, the youngest of 7, up in Aroostook County. He was given a 35mm camera for his highschool graduation and taught himself to take pictures, trying to capture the beauty that was all around him that maybe folks were too busy to notice. When he was 19, he hitchhiked to Bar Harbor as he had heard that MDI was a beautiful place. And he was not disappointed when he discovered it was a mystical place and an aspiring photographer's dream. By and by he got a job as sternman for Gary Parsons which he continued for a dozen years, but not without giving up on his dream of being a photographer. Now he is again taking pictures using his God-given sense of composition and hopes that one day his photography will be discovered.

Acadia Senior College presents The "BIG IDEAS" Series, screening films, followed by discussion, that explore the promise and peril of ideas that challenge our current prevailing conceptions in these fast-paced times. What big ideas are changing the way people think about our world in the 21st century? What, exactly, are Big Ideas? These questions will be the theme of this ongoing series of events sponsored by Acadia Senior College. On Sunday, May 18 at 1pm, we proudly host the inaugural event with the film THE END OF SUBURBIA. This film explores the American way of life as expressed in the explosion of suburban sprawl over the past 50 years, and the serious questions beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. As global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply, the consequences of inaction are enormous. In this documentary, scientists and policy makers discuss what World Oil Peak means for North America. How will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done now, individually and collectively, to avoid the end of suburbia? A community discussion will follow the showing with David Hales, Pres. of COA; Erika Shriner, Activist and writer; and Karen Wigglesworth of the Maine Earth Institute.
And finally, the BAR HARBOR GREEN MARKET will again grace our parking lot Wednesday's from 9am - 1pm beginning Wednesday May 21, and continues through the fall. YUM!
We are moving into the summer-y time (at least according to the movie biz calendar). Chris and I want to send a big THANK YOU to all of you who came to Reel Pizza this winter. We appreciate and enjoy all our local customers so very much, and are really glad to be here helping make wintertime on MDI a little less dark and a little less cold. For those of you who do not come to Bar Harbor in these upcoming crazy-busy months, adieu till fall. We will be delighted to see the rest of you, through your familiar faces, during the summer, as we continue with our crazy mix of art, foreign, Hollywood, documentary and independent film, although you might notice it is a little heavier on the Hollywood for a bit as we all pretend we are on vacation with everyone else who is in town.

Winner of this year's Best Documentary Oscar, this vital, sobering film is the latest from director/screenwriter Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room). Ostensibly this film is about an innocent Afghani taxi driver who in December 2002 was detained, taken into US custody, interrogated about a rocket attack and was dead 5 days later as a result of his treatment.
