Here is today through Thursday's schedule at Reel Pizza.

We have a special program this weekend.   The third installment of the SIERRA CLUB FREE ENVIRONMENTAL FILM SERIES will be held on Sunday starting at 2pm.  There will be two films screened on the topic of climate change; first the Oscar-nominated SUN COME UP about the relocation of the residents of Carteret Island in the South Pacific, a low-lying island which is losing the battle with rising sea levels.  Also A SEA CHANGE a documentary about ocean acidification, caused by burning fossil fuels, and its effects on the marine ecosystem.  The speaker will be UMO professor, Joseph Kelley, Ph.D,  who is a marine geologist and an internationally known expert on sea-level change and other coastal issues.

We open the brand-new BOURNE film today, THE BOURNE LEGACY starring Jeremy Renner who was so good in THE HURT LOCKER and from director/screenwriter Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three BOURNE screenplays.  Steven Soderbergs's dramady MAGIC MIKE and indie comedy SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED will fill the other screen this week.  Film descriptions below.

One kitchen note, we are serving our seasonal fresh basil pie thanks to HAPPYTOWN FARM, and our organic salad greens are coming from SOUTHPAW farm in central Maine.  YUM!

THE BOURNE LEGACY  (PG-13)  135min

Screenwriter for the previous three Bourne movies, Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) has created an original story and also now directs this exciting, new adventure that focuses on a new character Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker), another special CIA agent in a related program whose existence has been compromised by the exposure of Jason Bourne’s operation.  He and all this program’s trainees are targeted by the program’s director (Ed Norton) to be terminated in a purge of this department.  Barely escaping an assassination attempt, he joins forces with another target, a bio-chemist (Rachel Weisz, The Deep Blue Sea) who he needs to keep him alive. 

MAGIC MIKE (R)  110min

Set in the world of the all-male dance review, this latest film from prolific and multi-disciplinary director-cinematographer Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, Traffic, sex lies and videotape) might be this summer’s guilty pleasure for half the population.   It is also a charming and entertaining story (albeit with a bit of wonderfully campy eye-candy) of a guy with dreams.  Based on a brief period in star Channing Tatum’s (21 Jump Street) real life, the story follows a construction worker who does stripping on the side, trying to raise the money he needs to start his dream business.  He takes a young, aimless dropout under his wing and gets him a job at the club.  Matt McConaughey (Bernie) continues his recent excellent work playing Texan characters as the club’s sleazy owner. 

 

SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED  (R)  86min

An unusual classified ad (purportedly real) seeking a companion for a time-travelling expedition leads three Seattle-based alternative weekly magazine employees to the coast where they find paranoid grocery clerk Kenneth (Mark Duplass, Your Sister’s Sister).  Jeff, a cynical reporter, heads off to rekindle an old high school flame, while Darius (Aubrey Plaza, TV’s Parks and Recreation) and Arnau (Karan Soni) prepare for their adventure.  This multi-layered, sweetly eccentric and freshly offbeat comedy won the screenwriting award at Sundance for writer Derek Connolly, and is the inspired feature debut for director Colin Trevorrow.

SUN COME UP  (NR)  36min
A multiple award-winner at several festivals, this Academy Award-nominated film shows the human face of climate change, provoking discussion about climate change, displacement, and the rights of vulnerable communities around the globe and is an inspiring glimpse into how one community is adapting to climate change.  The film follows the relocation of the Carteret Islanders, a community living on a remote island chain in the South Pacific Ocean, and now, some of the world’s first environmental refugees.   When climate change threatens their survival, the islanders face a painful decision to leave their ancestral land in search of a new place to call home.  A group of young islanders try to search for land and build relationships in war-torn Bougainville, 50 miles across the open ocean.

A SEA CHANGE  (NR)  60min
This film documents how the pH balance of the oceans has changed dramatically since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and examines how the dramatic changes we are seeing in the chemistry of the oceans will affect the future of life on Earth.  With near unanimity, scientist now agree that the burning of fossil fuels is fundamentally reshaping ocean chemistry and the steady increases in carbon dioxide emissions and resulting rise in acidity of the oceans will cause a bottom-up collapse of the world's fisheries that could last for millions of years.

So, onto the schedule...Tomorrow night (Thursday) is the last night for DARK KNIGHT RISES at 5:00 and 8:30 and YOUR SISTER'S SISTER at 5:30 and 8:00.  Without having sent anything out, I am impressed at the turnout for the little art movie...thank you!  and sorry if anyone missed out because of my spaciness on our rerun of BRAVE last weekend.....

Tues July 30 - Thurs Aug 2
YOUR SISTER’S SISTER  (R)  90min   5:30 and 8:00

This three character piece, the second film from director Lynn Shelton (Humpday) is a thoughtful and complex story of romantic confusion.  After Jack (Mark Duplass, Safety Not Guaranteed) makes a scene at a memorial service for his late brother, his best friend Iris (Emily Blunt, Salmon Fishing in Yemen) sends him to their vacant secluded family camp to chill.  When he arrives, he unexpectedly finds Iris’s sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt, Rachel Getting Married) there, nursing her wounds from the breakup of her longtime relationship.  A night of tequila-fueled confessions segues into the unannounced arrival of Iris early the next morning.  Thus a twisted tale of complicated relationships and secrets is set in motion. The excellent cast give raw, hilarious and emotional improvised performances. 

Starting Friday as we say goodbye to the long DARK KNIGHT RISES, our box office will return to it's regular opening time of 4:30.  We have our third installment of the free Sunday afternoon Sierra Club Film Series, with the film SUN COME UP, an Oscar-nominated documentary about climate change, on Aug 12 at 2:00, and another round of IMPROVISION on Sunday Aug 19 at 11pm (oops just realized this is not during this schedule!)

MOONRISE KINGDOM  (PG-13)  94min  5:30 and 8:00

In director Wes Anderson’s (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore, Royal Tennenbaums) consistently delightful new film, co-written with Roman Coppola, two twelve year-olds – one an orphan at Scout Camp, the other a lonely local girl – fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness.  Set on a New England coastal island in the summer of 1965, the peaceful island community is turned upside-down as the authorities, including the sheriff (Bruce Willis), the Scout Master (Ed Norton), the girl’s parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) and a Social Services representative (Tilda Swinton) try to hunt them down before a hurricane arrives.

To some, the new R-rated debut feature from The Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is full of ribald, juvenile stupidity, but to many others it is an inspired, raucously hysterical comedy.  The writer-director voices a potty-mouthed stuffed teddy bear, magically brought to life years ago by little Johnny.  Today, John (Mark Wahlberg) is a grown adult but the two have been inseparable best friends this whole time.  However, things might be about to change as John’s girlfriend (Milja Kunis) of four years is forcing a decision, choose either her or the bear.

A group of British retirees (played by Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy and others) decide for various reasons to move their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India, enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel.  Bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, these disparate expats arrive to find the palace, run by young Sonny (Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire), a shell of its former self. This delightful ensemble, based on Deborah Moggach’s novel These Foolish Things, is directed with charm by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love).

THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN  (PG-13)  137min

This fun, new version of the Spiderman genesis story stars Andrew Garfield (Social Network) as our young hero and Emma Stone (The Help) as his high school sweetheart Gwen.  Director Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) provides more interesting character development without sacrificing any of the exciting action adventure.  Peter Parker lives with his aunt and uncle (Sally Field and Martin Sheen) and is trying to solve the mystery behind the death of his parents.  When goes to see a former colleague of his dad’s (Rhys Ifans) who is doing experiments on reptile DNA, he gets bit by the infamous arachnid and gains his super powers.

[Reel Pizza] update July 20 - 26

hi everyone.

Here is the plan for this week.  We will be showing DARK KNIGHT RISES at midnight tonight; tickets go on sale at 9pm tonight (after we are done selling for our regular Thursday evening shows).  There is no line out there, ...yet!  For those of you who have been unable to get into MARIGOLD HOTEL, please be aware that it is coming back in early August, and also on the new schedule, coming soon to an inbox near you, we have confirmed dates on MOONRISE KINGDOM, among others. 

And for those of you not interested in superheroes, be sure to check out what is on our other screen. BERNIE, playing over the weekend, is a smart and funny comedy/drama from director Richard Linklater starring Jack Black, Matt McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine;  MONSIEUR LAZHAR, over the midweek, is a French Canadian Oscar nominee for Foreign Language film about an Algerian substitute teacher that looks wonderful.  Both are PG-13. 

We also have another edition of ImproVision this Sunday at 11pm, our occasional collaboration with the talented comedians of ImprovAcadia.  We turn off the sound on a cheezy B grade movie that they have never seen before, and these up and coming comics make up the dialogue, sound effects and musical tracks to what is on the screen.  It is adult oriented in language and subject matter, way funnier than the original filmmakers ever intended, and a new show every time.  Don't miss out on all the fun!

[Reel Pizza] update

Hi all

This week we have two films.  The brand-new animation ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT (PG) plays at 5:30 and 7:45 and starts with a new short film from the Simpsons!  On the other side, and at long last and what many of you have been patiently waiting for, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG-13) plays at 6:00 and 8:30.  Both films run from today Friday July 13 through Thursday July 19.

We have booked DARK KNIGHT RISES (PG-13) starting Friday July 20 and running for two weeks.  We will have a midnight show Thursday night for a lucky some of you who will spend a chunk of your day on line for tickets, and want to stay up all night watching it (its running time is very close to three hours).  Tickets will go on sale at 9pm, once we are done selling for our regular evening shows of the above two films.  It's an imperfect system in an imperfect world....

[Reel Pizza] July 6 - July 26 Schedule

Happy Fourth Everyone! 

sorry to be late (yet again?!?)  Here is the schedule for the next three weeks, that runs Friday July 6 - Thursday July 26. 
I attached a smaller sized pdf file of the movie schedule that I hope is more inbox-friendly.  It looks ok printed from my computer (if that means anything!)

We have two special events this coming weekend.  We are really excited to welcome film director Whit Stillman to Reel Pizza in a professional capacity as we screen his newest film over a weekend he will be on MDI.  He has graciously offered to be at the theater on Sat thru Mon evenings to introduce the film at the later screenings, and speak with anyone interested coming out of the earlier screenings.  We also have the second selection in our Sierra Club Free Environmental Matinee film and speaker series, and then later in the month, another IMPROVISION! 

We also finally have been able to book The Exotic Marigold Hotel for you on this schedule; Thanks for all your patience!  Additionally we have found some wonderful, family-rated  gems from the independent film world that we hope you will try, balancing out the popular summer blockbusters. Speaking of which, we will be opening the brand new ICE AGE film on Friday July 13 (is that a bad omen?) and stay tuned for news on DARK KNIGHT...coming soon??

Wilderness and Spirit, A Mountain Called Katahdin  (NR)  100min  2:00pm FREE
Winner of many environmental film festival awards, this landmark documentary includes the first recorded footage of the Katahdin 100 Run of the Penobscot People and footage of Earl Shaffer’s climb up Katahdin on his 50th anniversary Appalachian Trail through hike. It brings together the writings of Henry David Thoreau, the paintings of Frederic Church and Marsden Hartley, interviews with Baxter State Park staff, descendants of Gov. Baxter, legendary stories, and recollections of the residents of Millinocket and hikers and climbers of Katahdin. This film will be introduced by Buzz Caverly, long-time superintendent of Baxter State Park for many years and an enthusiastic and inspirational speaker. Reel Pizza and the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club offer these films and speakers at no charge to get people focused on the environment. This brand-new film turns the classic fairytale into an epic action adventures.  Charlize Theron is the evil queen out to destroy the fairest maiden in the land (Kristen Stewart).  But Snow White, rescued by the huntsman (Chris Hensworth) has been training in the arts of war with him.  Sam Claflin plays the prince enchanted by her beauty.

Young indie actress Greta Gerwig (Baghead) leads an excellent ensemble in this charming, civilized and very funny campus comedy, the first film in a dozen years from astute director Whit Stillman (Last Days of Disco), whose films parse the lives of privileged young adults with clever, witty dialogue.  Veronica is the leader of a group of beautiful women at a recently co-ed integrated college who are determined to save their (mostly male) schoolmates from themselves. She is joined by principled Rose and sexy Heather; they recruit new transfer student Lily (Analeigh Tipton, Crazy Stupid Love) who is somewhat skeptical but game as the group confronts suicide prevention with doughnuts and musical dance numbers and tries to improve frat boy hygiene by dating the offenders.  On Sat, Sun and Mon director Stillman will be on introduce later screenings;  he will also be available to chat in the lobby as the first show lets out.

After their parents’ divorce, two close siblings are separated; older, serious Koichi goes with his mother to his grandparent’s home in the shadow of an active volcano, while outgoing Ryu stays with their father, a struggling rock musician.  Soon, a new bullet train is to be open connecting the boys’ home cities.  Koichi hears that wishes come true that are made when standing at the exact center of two passing trains on their first run.  He makes clandestine arrangements to go to that spot on this new train line with his brother and his friends, dreaming of the miracle that will reunite his family.  With wisdom and humor, this hopeful film from director Hirokazu Kore-eda (After Life, Nobody Knows) fully captures the innocence of childhood.

Independent director Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise) works again with a quite restrained Jack Black (School of Rock) and right-at-home Matt McConaughey (Dazed and Confused).  This satisfyingly intriguing and enjoyably wacky East Texas-set comedy and vivid, offbeat character study is based on a true story.  Bernie (Black) is a beloved resident of a small, rural town, the dedicated assistant mortician who teaches Sunday school and sings in the choir.  When he befriends an affluent widow (Shirley MacLaine) no one is surprised, except that she is such a hated sourpuss that her family has disowned her.  As their relationship grows, he becomes her traveling companion, financial manager and heir.  McConaughey is the ambitious local DA who becomes involved as Bernie’s seemingly inexhaustible kindness gets stretched thin.

This French Canadian film, an Oscar-nominee for Best Foreign Language film this past year, is a multi-layered drama, a compelling portrait of a decent but troubled man and an exploration of the student-teacher dynamic.  In a Montreal middle-school, two students discover the body of their favorite teacher.  Algerian immigrant Bachir Lazhar (Mohamed Fellag) volunteers to substitute after reading about the tragedy in the paper and is quickly hired.  The cultural gap between teacher and students is immediately apparent, but over the year he tries to help the kids through the healing process despite his haunted past. This poignant, thoughtful film, adapted from a one-man play by Évelyne de la Chenelière, is directed by Philippe Falardeau.

Coming on our Second Screen?
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (PG-13) 165min
This is the third and concluding feature in director Christopher Nolan’s series of Batman films, starting with Batman Begins and continuing with The Dark Knight.  Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman reprise their roles from the earlier two films.  Tom Hardy enters as Bane, the menacing foe of Gotham City, and Anne Hathaway as his associate Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.  Although Batman is now considered the enemy of Gotham after admitting to killing Harvey Dent, when Bane overwhelms the city’s policeforce, Batman steps in to protect his city.  If we are granted permission to show the film on opening, we will be presenting a mid-night screening Thursday night into the wee hours of Friday morning.  We will let you know when we know.
