Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd headline this laugh-out-loud comedy.  They are an overextended couple in Manhattan who lose their jobs and thus their micro-loft apartment; their only choice is to relocate to Atlanta to live with his awful brother and family.  En route, they stop at what they think is a B&B but actually is an alternative hippie commune populated by eccentric characters that have a different way of looking at things.  Is this better than living with his obnoxious brother and alcoholic wife?  Director David Wain (Role Models) keeps things light with a terrific supporting cast including Lauren Ambrose, Alan Alda, Linda Lavin and Justin Theroux.

This complex, excellent story of ethics in modern day Iran recently won director Asghar Farhadi the Oscar for best Foreign Language film and a nomination for best original screenplay.  A universal picture of a family conflict, Simin, a doctor, wants to emigrate to a western country with her husband Nader to provide a better life for their pre-teen daughter; after he agreed to get the visas, he changes his mind, so as not to leave behind his Alzheimer’s afflicted father.  Simin is unable to take her daughter without her husband’s permission, so attempts a divorce, which isn’t granted, and she moves back in with her parents.  When Nader hires a young devout woman to care for his father while he is at work, he hopes his world will return to normal.

This promising debut film from writer-director Dee Rees is an impressive, honest and optimistic feature length adaptation of her prize-winning short film with a fabulous performance from her star Adepero Oduye.  She plays Alike, a middle-class teen from Brooklyn with a religious, conservative mom and a distant cop dad.  She hasn’t come out yet, but is quietly and firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian.  Her parents don’t like the influence of her life-long best friend, and her mom encourages her to socialize instead with a colleague’s daughter.  Although not always successful, Alike strives to survive adolescence with grace and humor.

[Reel Pizza] update Mar 30 - April 5

Hi everyone

Tonight we are doing something completely different with the wacky presentation of DOGGIE WOGGIEZ! POOCHIE WOOCHIEZ! from the EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE! video collective.  We will have Commodore Gilgamesh of EIT! in attendance with the main presentation starting at 6:00 (I think there is some kind of "pre-show" so you might want to come a little early).  Please note this isn't meant to be a kid-friendly program. There will be an 8:15 screening of WOMAN IN BLACK and LORAX will play at 5:30 and 7:30 on the other screen. 

The Senior Matinee this Thursday is the last of the season and we will screen the classic, fun WAKING NED DEVINE that many of the regulars had never seen. 

This Saturday at 1:30 (doors open at 1pm) we are hosting a free FILM & DISCUSSION on Windpower (how appropriate for today!)  The group "Friends of Maine's Mountains" is sponsoring a screening of the award-winning and new film WINDFALL about large scale windpower development and its effects on rural communities.  I look forward to a lively discussion about wind power both for and against.

Oscar-winning Pixar Animation director Andrew Stanton (Wall-E, Finding Nemo) makes his live action debut with this fun and captivating adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic, highly imaginative novel that has been the inspiration for the past century’s entire genre of space adventure films, from Flash Gordon thru Star Trek and Star Wars to Avatar.  A war-weary Civil War captain, Carter (Taylor Kitsch) is mysteriously transported from desolate Arizona Territory to equally desolate Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the planet’s inhabitants and discovers that the planet’s survival and its people rest in his hands.

Reliable yet oddly reserved Albert (Oscar nominee Glenn Close, who also co-wrote the screenplay) works as the butler in a genteel 19th century Dublin hotel, saving his earnings to someday open his own shop.  His days are spent in terror of a deception he has made, borne of poverty and desperation, being discovered by his co-workers and clients, for in fact, Albert is a woman.  Janet McTeer also earned an Oscar nomination for her role as someone who changes Albert’s outlook on the rest of his life.  Also co-starring are Brendan Gleeson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Mia Wasikowska.  This sensitive film, from director Rodrigo Garcia (Mother and Child) is based on an adaptation of a short story by George Moore.

PINA  (PG) 106min [partly in a variety of languages with subtitles]
in 2D   German filmmaker Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire) planned to make a film with uniquely dramatic dance choreographer Pina Bausch for years, but just as filming was to start, she died.  So with the encouragement of her dance troupe, this film became a transfixing tribute to this celebrated artist.  Her talented dancers at Tanztheater Wuppertal, where she worked for 35 years, recreate four of her signature works, both on stage and as they take the movement out onto the streets of the city and surrounding countryside.  This was an Oscar nominee for best Documentary this past year.

Saturday March 31 
WINDFALL (NR)   1:30pm   A free film presented by Friends of Maine's Mountains  This award-winning documentary is an account of a rural community, Meredith, in upstate New York, that was torn apart over the development of an industrial wind facility in the town. Like many Maine rural communities, the industrial wind developers came to town with promises of tax relief, financial payments to landowners and sustainable energy. Yet the reality was very different and the proposal divided Meredith’s residents as they fought over the future of their community. Attracted at first to the financial incentives that would seemingly boost their dying economy, a group of townspeople grow increasingly alarmed as they discovered the impacts that the 400 foot high windmills slated for Meredith could bring to their community as well as the potential for financial scams.

The Senior matinee on Thursday (3/22)  is THE GREY at 1:30.

We have a special "live" program happening right here on Monday 3/26 at 6:00.  We will be welcoming Commodore Gilgamesh and friends of  EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE! a video collective who make movies by clipping bits of other films together.  The program they are taking on tour is DOGGIE WOGGIEZ! POOCHIE WOOCHIEZ!, which, as you might gather, is an all-canine-inspired take on a 1973 film THE HOLY MOUNTAIN.  This is something completely offbeat and sounds like big time fun!  So come on down for a totally different take on Monday.  Tickets for this event are $8, and no big tickets for this. There will be an article about EIT! in this week's MDIslander (I think!).  WOOF! 

Also we have a worthy Fundraising event on Sunday 3/25.  The MDIHS class of 2012 is hosting a benefit with proceeds going towards their Project Graduation, which provides a safe and fun outlet to celebrate their accomplishments after the commencement.  There will be two films showing (one is an animated show about a crotchety old man who travels with a pesky boyscout to South America by house balloon after his wife dies (PG); the other is a comedy about a night out between a man and his wife that does not go at all according to his plan (PG-13)  Both films (@ $6) start at 1:30pm.  They are also selling tickets for an I Pad raffle; the winner will be drawn after the screenings.

Daniel Radcliffe moves on from Harry Potter in this spooky, quite thrilling (but not gory) ghost story.   Based on the 1982 novel by Susan Hill, he stars as Arthur Kipps, a young attorney still grieving from the death during childbirth of his beloved wife four years earlier.  His boss has given him an ultimatum:  pull it together or prepare to grieve for your job.  He is given the task of sorting through the paperwork of a deceased woman in a remote village whose decrepit home is isolated at the edge of a marsh; the locals tell him to return to his home as soon as he arrives, but he is determined to settle the estate no matter the tragic secrets he uncovers.

Provocative Danish director Lars von Trier has made a demanding, extraordinary, haunting, sumptuous tale of two sisters, depressed Justine (Cannes winner Kirsten Dunst) who has just married Alexander Skarsgård in a lavish wedding, and her older sister, calm sensitive Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) with a wealthy husband (Keifer Sutherland) who spends the reception party trying to hold her sister together.  The bride’s bickering divorced parents, her pushy boss, and her state of mind threaten her marriage nearly before it begins.  Weeks later, as another planet comes hurdling toward Earth, she seems oddly better prepared than her sister for the apocalypse.

Liam Neeson (Taken, Unknown) anchors this surprisingly spiritual and resonant adventure film.  He is one of a group of rough oil-rig workers headed out on leave from their isolated site who survive their transport plane’s crash in the remotest Arctic.  These seven men, lacking supplies or weapons, face severely inhospitable elements and must evade a ravenous pack of wolves as they try to find safety and help.  Adapting a short story, Ghost Walker, with its author Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, director Joe Carnahan directs with effective restraint to make a suspenseful and thoughtful film.

Master director Roman Polanski (Ghost Writer) with Yasmina Reza has adapted her hugely successful and Tony award-winning stage play.  His excellent cast includes Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster, and John C. Reilly.  This razor-sharp, biting comedy of parental differences spends an evening with two couples after their 11 year old boys have a playground fight that resulted in injuries.  Their polite discussion soon escalates into verbal warfare with all four revealing secrets and truths. 

3/20 - 3/22
LE HAVRE (NR)  93min  [in French with subtitles]  6:00 and 8:00
In the French port city of the title, an elderly shoeshine man Marcel lives with his loving wife and they get by through the generosity of their neighbors.  One day a cargo container is discovered to hide illegal immigrants from Gabon who thought they were headed to London.  A young teenager eludes capture and is taken in by Marcel, who hides the boy and tries to arrange transport to UK so he can find his mom.  This heartwarming film, full of Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s (Man Without a Past) droll, dry wit shows how a community pulls itself together for something it values.

[Reel Pizza] update Feb 24 - March 1

good morning everyone

The Tournee Festival of French Films continues tonight and Thursday.  Today, Wednesday, we have NENETTE (@5:30) and HADEWIJCH (@7:30), tomorrow, Thursday QUEEN TO PLAY (@5:30) and WHITE MATERIAL (@7:30).  WAR HORSE continues at 5:00 and 8:00 thru Thursday.

This week's Senior Matinee on Thursday will be WAR HORSE (PG-13) at 1:00 (early start this week).  Next Thursday March 1st, our regular Senior Matinee will be IRON LADY, at 1:30.
Also, on Sunday, as it is Oscar Day, please note we will only be screening afternoon matinees of our films; no evening shows on Sunday. I know several of our seniors have been interested in a HUGO matinee which will be screened at 2pm.  Also we will be screening IRON LADY at 2pm.

And YES it is Oscar weekend (!) and we will be hosting our annual Gala Celebration of movies on Sunday evening, starting at 6pm until its over, to benefit the programs at Summer Festival of the Arts.  Some new additions to the festivities include the display of student art, the screening of student films and live music from SFOA attendees for a portion of the pre-show.  As in past years, there will be prizes for best costume for men and women, both in the formal wear categories and the film character categories.  And of course a prize for the attendee whose ballot is most correct.  Delicious appetizers and desserts, donated by local restaurants and chefs, and complimentary bubbly will be served.  Tickets at $15 adults and $10 thru high school are available at our box office during regular hours; if that doesn't work, call me 288-3828 or SFOA 244-3855 to arrange.

Meryl Streep earns another Oscar nomination for her remarkable and pitch-perfect portrayal of the long-serving and influential British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.  This intimate portrait in the form of a moving memory poem begins in her later years as the once formidable woman putters around her home holding conversation with her beloved husband Denis (and excellent Jim Broadbent) who has been dead for many years.  Using reenactment of her memories, director Philida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) presents highly personal interludes of transformative parts of her life, a green grocer’s daughter who startles her Conservative Party by running for office and wins, eventually rising to become the head of the government.

Back by Popular Demand!  Martin Scorsese brings his unique vision and winning talents to his first family film, based on Brian Selznick’s Caldecott-winning “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” sharing with this story a love of and appreciation of the magic of films at the dawn of moviemaking.  Wiley orphan Hugo (Asa Butterfield) lives in the rafters of a 1930s Paris Metro station, winding the clocks daily while trying to discover the secrets of a broken machine left to him by his father.   But when he is caught stealing needed parts from a local toy seller (Ben Kingsley), his quest might be over.  Sasha Baron Cohen, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Lee, and Emily Mortimer co-star.

A DANGEROUS METHOD (R)  93min

In director David Cronenberg’s engaging film, meticulous and driven Swiss therapist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) adopts the radical healing technique of his mentor, Viennese doctor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortenson).  He uses “the talking cure” on his newest patient, young and beautiful but unbalanced Russian Jew Sabrina Spielrein (Keira Knightly); both men fall under her spell.  This story, based on John Kerr’s book A Most Dangerous Method and screenwriter Christopher Hampton’s subsequent play, tells of two men whose collaboration would shape modern thought, yet their temperaments drove them apart.

Happy Valentine's Day...we love you all!

Don't forget that tonight is the special V-Day Improvision with Jen and Larrance of ImprovAcadia and some of their brave, bold, local students who dare to accept the challenge of Improvision.  It will be in the romantic comedy genre, but beyond that is anyone's guess!  And this winter edition has a more appropriate start time...8pm, which in February is kindof like 11pm in July!  This will pre-empt our 8pm screening of Descendants for tonight.

This coming week is packed with films; we are looking forward to the Tournee Festival of French Film co sponsored with College of the Atlantic.  If you want to see all the films (each is to be shown once) ask at the box office for a discount pass.  Hope you can make time to see one!   (I apologize for the crazy font size and spacing....I am not sure why sometimes it comes up wierd....or how to make it be like the rest again without retyping ...get out your magnifying glass, I guess!)

This remarkable, heartfelt story of a young man and his horse, a Best Picture Oscar nominee, is an old-fashioned odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure.  Steven Spielberg directs this emotional adaptation of the 1987 young adult novel turned award-winning stage play with bold and sweeping strokes.  In rural England as WW1 is about to begin, young Albert (Jeremy Irvine) acquires his beloved horse when his drunken father foolishly outbids their evil landlord for it at auction.  Later she must be sold for rent money and is taken to the battlegrounds of France, but Albert vows to see her again, and as soon as he is old enough, enlists to find his friend.

Using two of Belgian comic Hergé’s tomes Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure, director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson have created a classic epic adventure on land and sea and air that is loads of fun.  Utilizing a much improved motion capture technique, the film follows Tintin (Jamie Bell) a young reporter who is always accompanied by his trusty terrier Snowy, perpetually intoxicated Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis), and bumbling investigators Thomson and Thompson (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost), as his relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into the clutches of the nefarious Sakharine (Daniel Craig).

TOURNÉES FESTIVAL OF FRENCH FILM   A three day festival of French film co-sponsored by College of the Atlantic, with a grant from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Ministry of Culture.   Each film screens one time.  A pass for all six films is available for $30 at the boxoffice.

A rugged and burly homebuilder who takes pride in his work, and devoted family man, becomes romantically attracted to his young son’s lithe and intellectual teacher. Director Stéphane Brisé with Florence Vignon won the César for best adapted screenplay.

INSPECTOR BELLAMY (NR) 110min  [in French with subtitles]  7:30
This last film of French New Wave director Claude Chabrol stars Gérard Depardieu as an inspector nearing retirement who is still haunted by a childhood incident with his obnoxious brother and determined to find the answers.

Documentary filmmaker Nicolas Philibert (To Be and To Have) has made a captivating study of this enigmatic orangutan and our relationship to her. Born in the jungles of Borneo, she has spent her life as the oldest and most beloved resident of the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes in Paris.

HADEWIJCH (NR)  105min [in French with subtitles]   7:30
Hadewijch, a novice nun, is expelled from her order for being too ardent. She returns to the secular world as Céline, the daughter of a Parisian diplomat; through meeting some rebellious teens, she is invited to join a Koran discussion group and becomes fascinated by the leader’s intense theological debates and his support of jihad. Bruno Dumont’s powerful film explores the relentless pursuit of faith in both Christianity and Islam.

Sandrine Bonnaire and Kevin Kline star in the debut feature of director Caroline Bottaro.  She plays a dutiful wife and maid at an exclusive resort who learns to play chess. When her husband will not play with her, she beseeches the reclusive American resident where she cleans to be her partner; their games become increasingly erotically charged.

WHITE MATERIAL (NR) 102min  [in French with subtitles]  7:30
Two titans of French cinema, director Claire Denis and star Isabelle Huppert, collaborate in this haunting, enigmatic look at the horrors of colonialism’s legacy.  Set In an unnamed African country in the throes of a volatile regime change, Huppert plays a coffee plantation owner blindly determined to continue her business as civil war rages around her.
