Fri Aug 19 - Thurs Aug 25
CRAZY STUPID LOVE (PG-13) 118min 6:00 and 8:30
This enchanting comedy of romantic confusion stars Steve Carell as Cal, a
straight-laced father of two with the perfect life who finds his world
crumbling around him when his wife (Julianne Moore) tells him she has
cheated on him and wants a divorce. Now he spends his evenings sulking
alone at the local bar, where handsome Lothario Jacob (Ryan Gosling) takes
this sad sack under his wing and teaches him about the many options
available to meet new women. His makeover provides him with many new
conquests, but his heart still pines for his ex. Meanwhile, his teenager
son has a crush on the babysitter, who is crazy about his "new" dad.
Directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (I Love You Phillip Morris, Bad
Santa) have made a smart, satisfying, and hilariously funny comedy.

Fri Aug 19 - Mon Aug 22
WINNIE THE POOH (G) 69min 5:30 and 7:00
With gentle charm, the timeless 85-year-old AA Milne classics about a boy,
his philosophical bear of very little brain, and assorted friends, Tigger,
Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, Roo and Eeyore, return to the big screen.
Narrated by John Cleese with songs by Zooey Deschanel, Disney has based
this most recent iteration of the original featurettes on five of the
timeless stories, using hand drawn animation that evokes the original EH
Shepard illustrations. Pooh starts his day, as he usually must, looking
for some honey. Later they discover that Eeyore's tail is missing, and
have a quest to save Christopher Robin from abduction by an imaginary
culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day with an important message
about the benefits of being literate.

Tues Aug 23 - Thurs Aug 25
DOUBLE HOUR (NR) 95min [in Italian with subtitles] 5:30 and 7:45
This twisty blend of romance, psychological thriller and film noir is the
debut feature of music video director Giuseppe Capatondi. Both leads
earned best actor awards at the Venice Film Festival. Ksenia Rappoport
plays a Slovenian immigrant who is a high-end hotel maid in Turin.
Filippo Timi plays a luckless ex-cop, now a security guard. They meet at
a speed-dating singles event and a passionate romance develops. Leaving
the city for a weekend getaway to the country, things suddenly take a dark
turn, and, as her murky past resurfaces, her reality starts to crumble.

[Reel Pizza] schedule Aug 19 - Sept 8

Here is the schedule that takes us beyond Labor Day! We have two special
programs to offer, one late night and one matinee, and new art gracing our
lobby walls, in addition to our regular film program. No times are listed
on this schedule, as we will be returning to booking the week-long screen
on a Monday for Friday basis.

-Lisa and crew

**************************

NEW ART Ethan Pierce, Portland Maine
"It is my personal belief that visual art is a medium like any other-the
purpose of which is to allow the creator of the piece to birth his or her
emotions and beliefs in physical form and thus to insinuate to the viewer
a more concrete image of the abstract feelings and or ideas that the
author wishes to convey. When I draw, paint, act, write, or perform any
other creatively based task, my objective is to create a piece that
reflects what I feel or think at that moment-be it joy, anger,
frustration, peace or any number of elemental emotions. The physical act
of painting helps me to understand things about myself, my thoughts and
values."

**************************

Saturday Aug 27 11pm
ROCK'N'REEL (NR) 79min
"In the hands of a free spirit, the cinema is a magnificent and
dangerous weapon."-- Luis Buñuel
Can't get enough of Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'? Come catch a double
feature from two of that film's most indelible characters: Luis Buñuel and
Salvador Dalí. Made in 1929 and 1930, these films are a one-two punch of
savage surrealist cinema that continues to inspire filmmakers today. We
are pleased to be presenting these films with live musical accompaniment
by multi-instrumentalist Sean Murphy. This should provide an
electrifying interplay with these two classic films. A rare treat.

Sunday Aug 28 2pm
THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY OF THE BUTTERFLIES (NR) 50min FREE
The 4th and final film of our summer series with the Maine Chapter of the
Sierra Club who offers these films at no charge to get people focused on
the environment. Orange-and-black wings fill the sky as NOVA charts one
of nature's most remarkable phenomena: the epic migration of monarch
butterflies across North America. NOVA's filmmakers followed monarchs on
the wing throughout their extraordinary 2000 mile odyssey to their
wintering grounds in the mountains of central Mexico. To capture a
butterfly's point of view, camera operators used a helicopter, ultralight,
and hot-air balloon for aerial views along the butterflies'
transcontinental route. Monarch butterfly expert Bill Calvert, featured
in the program, will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward.

WINNIE THE POOH (G) 69min

Tues Aug 23 - Thurs Aug 25
DOUBLE HOUR (NR) 95min [in Italian with subtitles]
This twisty blend of romance, psychological thriller and film noir is the
debut feature of music video director Giuseppe Capatondi. Both leads
earned best actor awards at the Venice Film Festival. Ksenia Rappoport
plays a Slovenian immigrant who is a high-end hotel maid in Turin.

the city for a weekend getaway to the country, things suddenly take a dark
turn, and, as her murky past resurfaces, her reality starts to crumble.

**************************

Fri Aug 26 - Mon Aug 29
BEGINNERS (R) 104min
Sweet, touching and funny, this is the second film from graphic artist
Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), a distinctive director with a unique style.
Based on his own personal history, the story follows a man (Ewan
MacGregor) whose 75 year old father informs him, after the death of his
mother following a 45 year-long marriage, that he is and always has been
gay. The son, somewhat mortified with his father's announcement watches
as his father morphs from a distant parent into a lively, happy man who is
in a loving relationship with a much younger man (Goran Visnjic).
Remembering this transformation after his father's death challenges him in
his newly forming relationship with a young woman (Melanie Laurant) with
whom he is interested, but under normal circumstances would flee from at
the first hint of attraction.

Tues Aug 30 - Thurs Sept 1
THE FIRST GRADER (PG-13) 103min
Based on a true story, this heartfelt film follows the controversial
attempt of an elderly tribal farmer (Oliver Litundo), once a freedom
fighter against the British, in a remote mountaintop village to take
advantage of the Kenyan government's new promise of universal, free
education. Eventually the principal-teacher (Naomi Harris, Pirates of the
Caribbean) risks all, her career, her marriage, her safety, to help the
old man to learn to read. Director Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn
Girl) provides a rich and beautiful portrait of Kenya and her people,
while also exploring its more violent past, in this provocative and
uplifting tale.

**************************

Fri Sept 2 - Mon Sept 5
A BETTER LIFE (PG-13) 98min [partly in Spanish with subtitles] From
director Chris Weitz (About a Boy), this touching and poignant
multi-generational story is about a father's love and the lengths a parent
will go to give his child opportunities he never had. Demián Bichir gives
a masterful performance as Carlos, a struggling illegal day-laborer for a
landscape gardener. His is also raising his son (José Julián) alone,
trying to make ends meet while steering his teen clear of the lure of LA's
gangs and their easy money. It is a powerful and authentic story that
resonates with truth.

Tues Sept 6 - Thurs Sept 8
PAGE ONE: A Year Inside the New York Times (R) 88min
With unprecedented access to the Gray Lady's newsroom and the inner
workings of her Media Desk, this engrossing and enlightening documentary
is a nuanced portrait of a revered institution at a crossroads,
chronicling the transformation of the media industry at a time of greatest
turmoil. Grappling with challenges such as WikiLeaks, constantly evolving
platforms such as Twitter and tablets, and an increasing expectation that
news should be free, the writers, editors and publishers struggle to stay
vital and solvent. But director Andrew Rossi also shows that rigorous
journalism is vibrant and thriving.

**************************

COMING ON OUR SECOND SCREEN?

CRAZY STUPID LOVE (PG-13) 118min

THE HELP (PG-13) 137min
Based on Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel, this new film explores the
plight of black maids in Civil Rights Era Jackson, Mississippi with both
gravity and affecting humor, raised by excellent performances. Skeeter
(Emma Stone) is just graduated from Ol'Miss and returned to her childhood
home and friends. She has taken a job with the local paper writing a
housekeeping column, and hopes to get assistance from the maids, including
Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, of her friends (whom she is finding
increasingly racist). Soon she decides what she would really like to do
is write a story of the maids' experiences working for these women. But
getting these women to talk to her is a challenge, especially with the
racial unrest.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (PG-13) 110min
This "origins" story from British director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) has
the best reviews of this summer's crop of action films, both for its
reality-based cautionary tale and for the seamless visual effects; plus it
stands on its own as an individual film. Andy Serkis (LOTR, King Kong)
gives a terrific motion-capture performance as Caesar, an orphaned chimp,
raised by genetics scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) trying to work out
a drug to cure Alzheimer's disease, afflicting his father. Defending the
grandfather, Caesar gets himself into trouble and lands in monkey jail
where he causes the other inmates, including orangutans and gorillas to
revolt against Mankind.

**************************************

SIERRA CLUB SUMMER SERIES #3
GREENFIRE (NR) 72min Sunday 8/14 2pm
Aldo Leopold is considered by many to be the father of wildlife management
and the US wilderness system. After a career in the US Forest Service in
the southwest, he transferred to Wisconsin and worked in ecological
restoration on his family farm, while teaching game management at
University of Wisconsin. A collection of his essays examining humanities
relationship to the natural world, A Sand County Almanac, was published
just after his death, and remains one of the most respected books about
the environment ever written. Led by Leopold's biographer Dr. Curt Meine,
this new film provocatively examines the legendary conservationist's
thinking, renewing his idea of a land ethic for a population facing 21 st
century ecological challenges. Using archival documents and photographs
as well as historical and contemporary footage of the landscapes that
influenced him as well as those he influenced, this film traces his
journey toward the key insight that was the culmination of his life's
work, that we are responsible for the health of our natural world.

IMPROVISION Sunday 8/14 11pm
Improvision is our occasional, wacky collaboration with the talented
ImprovAcadia crew. With the sound turned off, this ever-changing group of
up and coming comedians improvise the dialogue, music tracks and sound
effects to a cheesy grade-B movie that they have never seen before! Their
talents make the pictures on the screen way funnier than they were ever
anticipated. It's a totally new show every time.

*******************************

Fri 8/12 - Thurs 8/18
HORRIBLE BOSSES (R) 98min 6:00 and 8:00
Three horrible bosses (Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer
Aniston)…that is what three friends (Jason Batemen, Charlie Day and Jason
Sudeikis) have and complain about. They can't quit because they know
there are no other jobs out there. What starts off as an imaginary and
far-fetched premise developed over beers at the pub devolves, with the
help and advice from a terrifying ex-con (Jamie Foxx), into unsavory,
doomed-to-fail and absolutely silly pandemonium. TV and Documentary
director Seth Gordon (King of Kong) gets pitch perfect performances from
his cast in a fun film where the wildly outrageous situations spiral into
increasing chaos.

Fri 8/12 - Mon 8/15
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13) 94min 5:30 and 7:45
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
The City of Lights in three separate eras is the setting for Woody Allen's
latest literate gem, a charming and engaging romantic comedy that muses on
nostalgia. Owen Wilson stars as Gil, a hack screenwriter who is working
on but unsatisfied with his first novel. He and his irritable fiancée
(Rachel McAdams) have traveled to Paris with her parents for a vacation.
While he revels ins the artistic history surrounding them (he yearns to
have lived in the Jazz Age of the 1920s), she has plans to shop. One
night out for a walk alone, he is invited by a costumed American couple in
a stylish old car to a party and the magic begins.

Tues 8/16 - Thurs 8/18
BRIDE FLIGHT (R) 130min [partly in Dutch with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:15
Eager to escape the damp and suffocating atmosphere of post-war Holland,
three young Dutch women look to a better life in New Zealand. They meet on
the immigration flight to their new country, where they are to join their
fiancés and marry. During the flight, the three women form a bond of
friendship among themselves, and with Frank, an attractive young man who
wants to set up a winery. On their arrival, all four part ways to start a
new life. Yet their paths continue to cross. An outing that reunites all
four turns into a near. Only 50 years later do they all come together
again, perhaps closer now than ever before. This was a well-received
title in last year's MIFF-by-the-Sea film festival, now in general
release.

Fr-Th 8/5 - 8/11 THE TREE OF LIFE (PG-13) 139min 5:15 and 8:00

Fr - Mon 8/5 - 8/8 THE TRIP (R) 112min 6:00 and 8:30
Tu - Th 8/9 - 8/11 SUBMARINE (R) 97 min 6:00 and 8:15

Fri 8/5 - Thurs 8/11
THE TREE OF LIFE (PG-13) 139min 5:15 and 8:00
Acclaimed director Terrence Malik (The Thin Red Line, The New World)
presents only his fifth feature, winner of the top prize at this year's
Cannes Film Festival. It is an ambitious, transporting, impressionistic
story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s that follows the life journey of
eldest son Jack, through the innocence of childhood to the disillusioned
adult years (Sean Penn) as he tries to reconcile a complicated
relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Through the director's stunning
imagery, the nature of faith and the meaning of life are questioned as he
considers how both nature and grace shape not only our individual lives
but also all life.

Fri 8/5 - Mon 8/8
THE TRIP (R) 112min 6:00 and 8:30
Steve Coogan is one of the funniest guys around. When asked by revered
British Sunday paper, The Observer, to tour the country's finest
restaurants, he envisions a perfect getaway with his girlfriend. But she
backs out and he can't find anyone else to accompany him except his best
buddy, also a comic, Rob Brydon. Director Michael Winterbottom (Tristran
Shandy, 24 Hour Party People) reunites with the pair on a hysterical
odyssey, freestyling with flair, where they drive each other mad with
constant competition while eating a lot of delicious food. This
side-splitting road comedy will have you rolling in the aisles.

Tues 8/9 - Thurs 8/11
SUBMARINE (R) 97 min 6:00 and 8:15
Oliver, resident of Swansea Wales, is 15 and has two goals. One is to
lose his virginity before his next birthday; the other is to save his
parent's marriage. His research leads him to sense that his parent's sex
life has become dormant, and with his marine-biologist father falling
deeper into depression, he also imagines his mother (Sally Hawkins) to be
having an affair with a new age guru neighbor (Paddy Considine). He also
has a crush on the totally unromantic, domineering and pyromaniacal
schoolmate, Jordana Breven. His wry, observant narration is hardly
reliable but very funny. Adapted from Joe Dunthorne's acclaimed novel,
this original debut directed by British comic Richard Ayoade is a
delightfully offbeat and refreshing coming of age story.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER PG-13 124min 5:30 and 8:00
In the early days of the Marvel Universe, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, Star
Trek) volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him
into a Super Soldier. But after a successful transformation, the military
decides he is far too expensive a creation to risk in battle, so he is
given a red, white and blue costume and used as a morale builder in USO
shows during WWII. Eventually he must break away to fight the Nazi menace.
He joins forces with Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter to wage war on the
evil HYDRA organization, led by the diabolical Red Skull (Hugo Weaving,
LOTR). Directed by Joe Johnson (Hildago, October Sky), this is an
exciting period epic that fully captures patriotic fervor prevalent in the
1940s.

COWBOYS AND ALIENS (PG-13) 118min 6:00 and 8:30
Jon Favreau directs Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in an original film
that crosses a classic Western with an alien-invasion movie. In the
Arizona Territory 1873, a stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past,
with only a shackle on his wrist as a clue, stumbles into the desert town
of Absolution, where the town's folk don't do anything unless ordered to
do so by the town's ironfisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). But when the
town is attacked by marauders from the sky, the stranger is their only
hope. Slowly he starts to remember who he is and where he has been, and a
secret he holds might give the town a fighting chance against the alien
forces.

a stylish old car to a party and the magic begins.

BRIDE FLIGHT (R) 130min [partly in Dutch with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:15
Eager to escape the damp and suffocating atmosphere of post-war Holland,
three young Dutchwomen look to a better life in New Zealand.
This was a well-received
title in last year's MIFF-by-the-Sea film festival, now in general
release.

[Reel Pizza] update July 22 - 28

WHEW I guess it is summer! Don't forget we are an air-conditioned
establishment...

One item of note, we are glad to announce that after a LONG TIME of
searching, we have found a good, reliable and reasonably priced GLUTEN
FREE CRUST that we now have available for our patrons. It is not vegan
(some milk solids in it) but it makes quite a nice pie. It comes only in
a 10" size. Please try it if it is something you like/need and let us
know your opinion.

We continue HARRY POTTER three times a day for another week, and have
Woody Allen's new film and the Canadian Oscar-nominee on the other side.
All of them are excellent. Our Box office is opening at 4:00 during the
run of HARRY POTTER; next week we will return to our regular 4:30 open
time.

See you soon, and stay cool!

-Lisa

Friday July 15 - Thursday July 28
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 (PG-13) 118min 5:00, 7:30
and 10:00
in 2D At long last, we have arrived at the final adventure of this
amazing series. Young wizard Harry and his friends including Ron,
Hermione, Neville, Luna, Ginny, Fred and George are fighting the evil
forces of their world led by Lord Voldemort, and it is all out war now.
The stakes have never been higher and Harry Potter himself may be called
on to make the ultimate sacrifice as the climactic showdown with his enemy
approaches. If you don't know how this all ends yet, you really should
hunker down and read the books…

Friday July 22 - Monday July 25
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13) 94min 6:00 and 8:15
The City of Lights in three separate eras is the setting for Woody Allen's
latest literate gem, a charming and engaging romantic comedy that muses on
nostalgia. Owen Wilson stars as Gil, a hack screenwriter who is working
on but unsatisfied with his first novel. He and his irritable fiancée
(Rachel McAdams) have travelled to Paris with her parents for a vacation.
While he revels ins the artistic history surrounding them (he yearns to
have lived in the Jazz Age of the 1920s), she has plans to shop. One
night out for a walk alone, he is invited by a costumed American couple in
a stylish old car to a party and the magic begins.

Tuesday July 26 - Thursday July 28
INCENDIES (R) 130min [in FRENCH & ARABIC with subtitles] 5:30 and 8:15
When a notary sits down with grown twins Jeanne and Simon to read them
their mother's will, they are stunned to each receive an envelope to
deliver. Hers is to the father they thought was dead and his is to a
brother they never knew existed. Thus begins the unraveling of the
secrets of their mother's life. Through a trip to the Middle East, they
piece together the tragic story of a courageous woman. Adapting the hit
play by Lebanese/Canadian Wajdi Mouawad who used his homeland's 1970's
conflict between militant Christians and Muslims as inspiration, Québécois
director Denis Villeneuve has made a deeply moving and poetic testament to
the uncanny power of the will to survive. This film was one of this
year's Oscar nominees for Best Foreign Film.
